Being a liberal means Never Having to say you’re Sorry

Being a liberal means Never Having to say you’re Sorry, Power Line, Steven Hayward, December 17, 2016

At the heart of liberal utopianism is the concept that through political exertion you can have a perfect society without tragic outcomes of any kind. This is one reason why liberalism rebels against human nature. (In fact, I think we should routinely refer to liberals as “human nature deniers.” Sauce for the goose and all that.)

It is this ineluctable characteristic that explains why liberals are having trouble making it through the five stages of grief over Hillary’s election face plant. Acceptance? No way.

Hence the bevy of Hollywood heroes who are now imploring members of the electoral college to vote for someone other that Trump is terrific ironic comedy gold. Give them props for saying to Republican electors—we’re not even asking that you vote for Hillary! Just some other qualified Republican. So here’s a fun idea: knowing that the House of Representatives would choose Trump in the case of an electoral college deadlock, how about a bunch of Republican electors say, “Fine: How about Ted Cruz?” And then sit back and watch the Hollywoods liberals choke.

Anyway, enjoy this silliness:

Obama Appoints Cop Killer Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Attorney to 6-Year Civil Rights Post

Obama Appoints Cop Killer Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Attorney to 6-Year Civil Rights Post, PJ MediaDebra Heine, December 17, 2016

In a move that has already sparked a backlash among law enforcement groups, President Barack Obama on Thursday appointed Debo Adegbile, a former attorney for convicted cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, to a six-year post on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The eight-member commission consists of four members appointed by the president and four appointed by Congress. Unfortunately, the six-year appointments are not subject to Senate confirmation.

Via  the Washington Times:

Mr. Adegbile worked at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund when he represented Abu-Jamal in the appeal of his conviction and death sentence for the notorious 1981 shooting death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Abu-Jamal’s sentence was reduced to life in prison.

The case prompted the Senate to reject Mr. Adegbile’s nomination in 2014 when Mr. Obama appointed him to lead the Justice Department’s office on civil rights. Some Democrats joined Republicans in voting down the selection at that time.

According to PJ Media’s J. Christian Adams, Adegbile, “while overseeing the NAACP LDF, the organization offered legal representation to Mumia Abu-Jamal, the murderer of Philadelphia police officer Danny Faulkner.” At the time, Adams called Obama’s “ultra radical pick” to lead the Justice Department’s office on civil rights, an “in-your-face nomination.” You can watch a video of LDF lawyers addressing a pro-Mumia crowd here.

The FBI Agents Association, National Fraternal Order of Police, Major County Sheriff’s Association, National Association of Police Organizations, National Sheriff’s Association, and the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association all came out in fierce opposition to the nomination of Adegbile in 2014.

Woodall Batchelor PLLC reminds us in recent posts that, Adegbile was rejected on a 52-47 vote in the Senate, which Obama called a “travesty based on wildly unfair character attacks against a good and qualified public servant.”

Now on his way out the door, as a final insult to the law enforcement community, Obama has appointed Adegbile to another civil rights post where he will likely be working against them for six long years.

Law enforcement groups and Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) decried the appointment Friday with one police union official calling it a “kick in the teeth to the cops.”

Via the Washington Free Beacon:

John McNesby, president of the Fraternal Order of Police’s chapter in Philadelphia, lashed out at the Obama administration over the appointment, calling it “Obama’s goodbye present to police across the nation.”

“That’s just the old kick in the teeth to the cops,” McNesby said during an appearance on the Dom Giordano Show on Friday morning. “I guess it’s Obama’s goodbye present to police across the nation.”

McNesby said that he saw the appointment as “payback to the FOP” and vowed that he would push the incoming Trump administration to fight it.

“This was definitely payback to the FOP through the appointment,” McNesby said. “This guy was Mumia’s sugar daddy through the appeal process—he did everything and financed the whole thing.”

“I don’t know whether he can be un-appointed but that will be one of our first orders of business when we go down and meet with the new administration in January,” he said. “I don’t know whether that can be done, but we are sure as hell going to try.”

McNesby guaranteed that his members will be outraged when they hear about the appointment and raised the possibility that the incoming Trump administration could shut down funding to the Commission on Civil Rights over the appointment.

The International Union of Police Associations, a member organization of the AFL-CIO, also condemned the appointment on Friday.

“President Obama has, once again, gone out of his way to demonstrate his utter distain for our nation’s law enforcement officers,” said Sam Cabral, the union’s president, in a Friday statement.

Cabral said that Adegbile “spread lies, spouted racism, and maligned the Philadelphia police in his failed efforts to overcome justice and portray this vicious murderer as, somehow, the victim.”

The unions will have an ally in Sen. Toomey, who said in a Friday statement that the appointment “is a slap in the face to every law enforcement officer in America.”

“In 2014, a bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate agreed that Debo Adegbile was not fit to represent the people of the United States in enforcing Americans’ civil rights,” Toomey said.

“Mr. Adegbile did not simply defend a client,” Toomey said. “He supervised an effort to lionize unrepentant cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal, who cold-bloodedly murdered Philadelphia police officer Danny Faulkner 35 years ago.”

The left-wing Center for American Progress, however, praised Mr. Adegbile’s “work on employment, housing discrimination, criminal justice and voting rights.”

Muslim Chaplain of the Canadian army: Beat your wife, but keep it private

December 17, 2016

Muslim Chaplain of the Canadian army: Beat your wife, but keep it private, Jihad Watch

Why would anyone expect him to say anything different? The mandate to beat one’s wife is in the Qur’an:

“Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.” — Qur’an 4:34

Muhammad “struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?” — Aisha (Sahih Muslim 2127)

“Muslim chaplain of Canada’s army explains Quranic verse on wife beating,” by Jonathan D. Halevi, CIJ News, December 15, 2016 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):

Dr. Iqbal Al-Nadvi (Mohammad Iqbal Masood Al-Nadvi) is the Muslim Chaplain of the Canadian army, the Chairperson of Canadian Council of Imams (Canada’s top imam) and the Amir (President) of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Canada, a nation-wide Islamic organization that is striving “to build an Exemplary Canadian Muslim Community” by “total submission to Him [Allah] and through the propagation of true and universal message of Islam.”

His previous positions include the following: Director of Al-Falah Islamic School in Oakville, Ontario from 2004 to 2011, Imam of Muslim Association of Calgary Islamic Center from 1998-2004 and as a member of the University of Calgary chaplaincy team.

On February 16, 2015, Iqbal Nadvi delivered a speech on “Family: The Building Blocks of Society” and “Family Life in Islam.” Among other things, Nadvi explained the Quranic verse dealing with wife beating. Verse 34 of Surah (chapter) Al-Nisa’ in the Quran reads:

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard.  But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance.  [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].  But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.”

Nadvi said that the Quran allows the husband to beat his wife under certain conditions, but because relationship between husband and wife is “scared” Islam, it has to be carried out as part of the attempts to resolve conflicts and must stay behind closed doors. Only if it fails to fix the marital relationship, the couple can resort to mediation and later to divorce. The following is an excerpt from Nadvi’s speech (19:24-22:10):

“In Islam as [inaudible] Qadar says many rulings (احكام) of the Islamic Law (الشريعة) in Islam, in Quran, [are] given just in concept, in brief, rights? But the family issue is covered by Quran in a very detailed way. Not only what we should do, but even what you do if face some problems. How [do] you solve it.

“So in that sense for example we see that the protection of family is covered by Islam in three layers, right?

“The first layer is – solve the problem mutually between husband and wife, right? In many times it happens that in these days and Glory be to Allah, meaning (يعني) when we are attacked, right? and Islam is criticized that Islam promotes suppose wife beating, right? and so many things.

“So many people when they translate the word fa-idribuhunna (فاضربوهن) they translate, change the meaning of it. [inaudible]

“Me, of example, I want to say one thing. First thing is that the is the ruling (حكم) of the Quran. It is existing. I can not change it. But I need to know from the messenger of Allah (رسول الله) peace and blessing be upon him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) what it means? How [do] we implement it? Do we have an example from messenger of Allah (رسول الله) peace and blessing be upon him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that he ever used this order? Right?

“So it means what? It means only that Islam is saying that the husband and wife issue and relation is so sacred, is so important, it must not be exposed to others. It supposes to be solved among each other. It is the first layer.

“And this is the point where for example Quran says if you are taking the issue, and Hadith says, if you are doing this thing, you can beat or can leave [avoid sleeping with the wife]. But why? Just keep the issue among each other.

NY Times CEO Advises How to Avoid ‘Fake News:’ Subscribe to Our Paper

December 17, 2016

NY Times CEO Advises How to Avoid ‘Fake News:’ Subscribe to Our Paper, Truth Revolt, Trey Sanchez, December 16, 2016

The New York Times Company president and CEO of one of the leading purveyors of leftwing-biased news has some peculiar advice on how to avoid “fake news:” “Subscribe to The New York Times.”

That’s what Mark Thompson told the Detroit Economic Club in his recent speech about getting consumers back to “real journalism.”

“If you want real journalism, you as a consumer will have to pay for it,” Thompson said. “So subscribe. Subscribe to your local paper, or The New York Times, or the Wall Street Journal, or The Washington Post, or, if you’re feeling particularly flush, to all of the above.”

“At The Times,” he added, “we’re making real progress, with audiences and subscriber numbers larger than at any time in our history, as well as big gains year over year in digital revenue. We still post healthy profits.”

That’s an interesting take seeing how readership is lower than ever with a reported $14 million net loss for the first quarter of 2016. Not to mention the paper getting “five times the normal level” of complaints of bias; a bias the NYT has apologized for with promises to act like journalists from now on.

In his speech, Thompson meandered through several fixes to “fake news” such as through “human or algorithmic means,” especially on social media platforms. But even with “a mighty algorithm” or “legions of human scrutineers” it would raise suspicions of “repressive regimes” and would be too “worrisome… in our free societies.” He cites the protections of the First Amendment:

“And who said that the public should only be allowed to read the facts anyway? The First Amendment essentially says they should be allowed to write, distribute and read anything they damn well please. If some of them turn out to prefer churning out and eagerly consuming lies and fantasies, so be it.”

But Thompson’s eagerness to fix the news is hindering his ability to see he is leading the charge in distributing highly partisan content. The NYT just hired on Glenn Thrush. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, his actions sure will. Thrush is the Politico writer exposed by WikiLeaks for sending his articles to Hillary Clinton’s camp for preapproval before publishing. Thrush is also a self-proclaimed “hack.”

Yet, Thompson remains confident that his paper is the portal to truth:

“Real journalism is vital to our democracy, and it has to be paid for. If not, it will largely disappear … If you as a citizen are worried about fake news, put your money where your mouth is and pay for the real thing.”

What Adam Carolla said about the NYT bears repeating here: “New York Times, you don’t get to dictate outcomes… We got the Internet. New York Times, no one gives a sh*t about you. You ain’t Hearst, William Randolph Hearst. You can’t affect things anymore.”

Undercover video: Muslim neighborhoods in France are no-go zones for women

Undercover video: Muslim neighborhoods in France are no-go zones for women, Creeping Sharia, December 17, 2016

Source: Immigration: French women organise protests to take back streets in Muslim majority areas | World | News | Daily Express

A women’s rights campaign group is organizing marches and protests in a bid to retake streets in predominantly Islamic neighbourhoods which they say have become entirely male dominated.

La Brigade des Mères, which is aiming to restore gender equality in France’s troubled ‘banlieues’, says women in many communities are now too scared to go out because gangs of young men rule the streets.

And a shocking undercover report, compiled by the TV channel France 2, shows how women are not welcome in bars and cafes in Muslim majority areas, with many men openly hostile to their presence in public at all.

Pascale Boistard, the women’s rights minister, declared: “There are now areas in our country where women can no longer go.”

For the report two brave women from La Brigade des Mères wore button-hole cameras and headed alone into the Muslim majority Paris suburb of Sevran, which was at the centre of the French capital’s 2005 race riots.

Nadia Remand and Aliza Sayah visited the streets and cafes of the notorious banlieue to build up a picture of how welcome women were in its public spaces.

As soon as they entered one bar, which was filled entirely with young men, the owner approached them and asked what they were doing there, and if they were waiting for a man.

When the women said that they were, he advised them: “It’s better to wait outside. There are men in here.”

When the pair countered that it was perfectly normal for women and men to be in a bar together another young man spotted them, and shouted incredulously: “There are men in here!”The women then asked him why he thought their presence was unusual, suggesting that he would perhaps go out for a coffee with a female friend or cousin, to which he replied: “My cousin stays at home.”He continued: “In this cafe there is no mixing. You are in Sevran, you’re not in Paris. It’s a different mentality.”The man insisted the Paris suburb was like the “bled” – A French slang term for a person’s home country which is frequently used by Muslim migrants from north Africa.Following the exchange the two women said that the government’s decision to bring in imams to quell the religious tensions which led to the 2005 riots had led to a more hardline version of Islam taking hold.In Lyon, France’s second biggest city, the report unearthed evidence that women are now actively altering their dress to avoid being threatened or abused by Muslim men.

One young woman told the broadcaster that she does everything she can to not be noticed, including wearing baggy trousers and avoiding wearing skirts and makeup.

When asked why, she replied: “Because I’m afraid, as simple as that.”

… in a video response to the report, Ms Maréchal-Le Pen said was evidence that some parts of the country are “no longer the land of France, because Islamic law has taken hold”.

She said: “It is no longer the law of France that applies, it is not the law of the Republic, we are witnessing the establishment of mini Caliphates where it’s Islamic law, Sharia, that applies every day.“I believe that these revelations show the fractures that are dividing the French population, with these types of people who have French nationality but with whom we do not share very much at all.“We don’t walk the same streets, we don’t have the same ancestors, we don’t have the same history, the same culture, the same law, the same way of life.“The problem of radical Islam today is evidently the problem of immigration and of the division of communities.”

Obama: “Almost every country on Earth sees America as stronger” than eight years ago

December 17, 2016

Obama: “Almost every country on Earth sees America as stronger” than eight years ago, Jihad Watch,

This is false everywhere in the world you look. Does the Democrats’ new all-purpose bogeyman, Russia, think of America as stronger? Hardly. Does the Islamic State, that exists because of Obama’s actions? Do the other forces of global jihad? Does Israel, so often hectored, treated with disrespect, and betrayed by Obama? Does Iran, to which Obama has given billions while Iranians chant, “Death to America”?

“Obama Pats Himself On The Back: ‘Every Country On Earth Sees America As Stronger’ Than Before I Took Office [VIDEO],” by Christian Datoc, Daily Caller, December 16, 2016:

President Barack Obama gave himself a big pat on the back during his Friday press conference, the last press event he will hold in 2016.

Obama opened the press conference by touting his economic and policy achievements before heaping praise on his own shoulders.

“Almost every country on Earth sees America as stronger and more respected today than they did eight years ago.”

“In other words, by so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than when we started,” he continued. “It is a situation that I am proud to leave for my successor, and it’s thanks to the American people.”…

PA claims it got no US aid in 2016, when it really got $357 million

December 17, 2016

PA claims it got no US aid in 2016, when it really got $357 million, Jihad Watch

(Perhaps the PA will be correct after the Trump administration takes over. — DM)

War is deceit,” said Muhammad.

“PA claims it got no US aid in 2016. In fact, State Dept. gave Palestinians $357 million. And that’s not all,” by Dov Lieber, Times of Israel, December 16, 2016:

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah claimed last week that his government has received no aid from Washington in 2016, accusing the US of imposing a “financial siege” on the Palestinians. But the State Department has in fact provided Ramallah with over $357 million in financial assistance in the past year, according to information given to The Times of Israel by a US State Department official on Thursday.

Additionally, in 2016 alone, the US contributed $355,177,827 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA), of which $95 million was earmarked for the West Bank and Gaza. UNWRA also operates Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

In total, therefore, the US gave around $712 million in aid to Palestinians in 2016, and is the world’s largest supplier of such aid.

Hamdallah told the official PA radio station the Voice of Palestine on December 8 that his government has not seen any of the aid money approved by the US in 2016. He described this as part of a “financial siege” on the Palestinian government. That allegation against the US of failure to pay, according to figures and explanations received by The Times of Israel, is a cynically skewed misrepresentation of the reality.

“Since last year, there is a financial siege on the Palestinian government… For example, let’s speak frankly, the US approved $263 million in 2016 as aid to the government. Look, 2016 is about to end, no shekel or agora, or dinar or dollar has been paid, if we speak frankly. We hope that this aid money will be paid,” he said, according to a translation by Palestinian Media Watch.

Hamdallah then listed and praised countries that he said have given aid to the PA in 2016, and excluded the US.

“The countries that have given their aid, and we always thank them, are the European Union, which always [gives] consistently and according to what is expected. When we plan the budget we know that the EU will pay. We thank Saudi Arabia, as President [Abbas] said at the Seventh Fatah Conference, and we thank Algeria. These are the countries that actually support our budget,” Hamdallah said.

The largest amount of money given to the PA annually from Washington is channeled through the USAID program.

In 2015, the State Department allotted $290 million to the Palestinians through USAID. This money formed the major part of the overall total of $357 million given to the Palestinians in 2016, and was dispensed after congressional approval. That one year delay between the allotment of aid from the USAID program and the actual transfer of the money to the Palestinians has been in place for over a decade.

The sum of $263 million which Hamdallah said the US approved in 2016 but claimed it has not given, therefore, was presumably a reference to the sum allotted by the State Department for payment in 2017, pending congressional approval. In fact, the actual sum Congress is being asked to approve for dispensation in 2017 is $261 million….

Obama to Putin: Cut It Out!

December 17, 2016

Obama to Putin: Cut It Out! Power LineJohn Hinderaker, December 16, 2016

[W]hy didn’t President Obama tell Vladimir Putin to cut it out back in 2014? If all it took was a stern warning by our president to bring Russian cyberwarfare to a halt, why didn’t Obama tell Putin to stop it two years ago? If he had done so, following his own logic, the Russians would have behaved and there would have been no Wasserman-Schultz hack two years later. Who knows, Hillary Clinton might be our president-elect!

**********************

Barack Obama has spent the last eight years resisting the idea that Russia is an adversary of the United States. First we had the “reset”; next the cancellation of the Eastern European missile shield; then we had Obama assuring President Medvedev that he would be able to give away the store, but the Russians would need to wait for his second term; and then the presidential debate where Obama mocked Mitt Romney’s statement that Russia is our number one geopolitical rival by saying that the 1980s called, and they want their foreign policy back. In between, we had a foreign policy that was supine in the face of Russian aggression in Crimea and Ukraine.

Now, in a typically head-snapping 180-degree turnabout, Obama and his fellow Democrats portray Republicans as soft on Communism Russia. It’s a throwback to the 1970s, but with the parties’ roles reversed.

In his press conference today, Obama described the stern measures he supposedly took after learning that the Russian government was involved in breaking into Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s email account:

And so in early September when I saw President Putin in China, I felt that the most effective way to ensure that that did not happen was to talk to him directly and tell him to cut it out, there were going to be some serious consequences if he did not.

And in fact, we did not see further tampering of the election process. But the leaks through Wikileaks had already occurred.

So all it took, apparently, was for President Obama to tell Vladimir Putin to cut it out.

This is what I don’t understand: in October 2014, the Russian government hacked into both the White House’s and the State Department’s computer systems. For an unknown period of time, weeks if not months, the Russians were reading White House and State Department emails–a far more significant security breach than the accounts of Debbie Wasserman Schultz and John Podesta. The Obama administration never did discover that its communications had been compromised, but an ally (I suspect it was Israel) alerted the administration to the Russian intrusion. The White House’s computer system was down for weeks while experts tried to deal with the Russian hack and improve security.

What was President Obama’s reaction to this hack, which could reasonably be seen as an act of war? There was none, apparently. The administration downplayed the significance of the intrusion. The Russian government had been reading White House and State Department emails? No big deal! The liberal press followed suit. The newspapers that are now hysterical about the alleged Russian hacking of Wasserman Schultz’s email account dutifully kept quiet about what happened in the White House and the State Department. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Democratic Party newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York Times remained silent because the midterm election was just a few weeks away, and the story reflected badly on the Obama administration.

So this is what I don’t get: why didn’t President Obama tell Vladimir Putin to cut it out back in 2014? If all it took was a stern warning by our president to bring Russian cyberwarfare to a halt, why didn’t Obama tell Putin to stop it two years ago? If he had done so, following his own logic, the Russians would have behaved and there would have been no Wasserman-Schultz hack two years later. Who knows, Hillary Clinton might be our president-elect!

This question is so blindingly obvious that one can only wonder why not a single reporter at today’s press conference thought to ask it.

I am just kidding, of course. The news outlets that covered up the Russian hack of White House and State Department computers in 2014 are not about to challenge their fellow Democrat today.

For background on the 2014 intrusion, which the Obama administration attributed to Russia after the fact, go here, here, here, here, here and here.
