Israel eager to put rift with Obama over Iran deal in past, Netanyahu says

The rift between the United States and Israel over the Iran is in the past, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News over the weekend.

The premier explained that the two countries must now work together to contain Tehran’s aggression in the region and ensure its compliance with the deal to curb its nuclear program.

“President [Barack] Obama has said that he is committed to preventing dangerous weapons coming into the hands of Iran’s proxies, that he wants to prevent Iran from destabilizing countries in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said.

“There is no better partner for that than Israel,” said Netanyahu, who spoke extensively with Greta Van Susteren on Friday. He made similar statements to CNN in an interview that will air on Sunday.

In both conversations, Netanyahu spoke of a renewed alliance between Israel and the US over the dangers posed by Iran. He also talked about ending the rift between him and Obama that has marked the relationship for the last year.

On Thursday, Netanyahu delivered a fiery address to the UN General Assembly in New York against the nuclear deal worked out in July between Iran and the six world powers.

The nations of the world, not just Israel, are endangered by the deal which leaves Iran with the ability to build atomic weapons and does not hinder its work on intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, Netanyahu said.

“Now remember this: Iran already has missiles that can reach Israel. So those intercontinental ballistic missiles that Iran is building – they’re not meant for us – They’re meant for you. For Europe. For America. For raining down mass destruction – anytime, anywhere,” Netanyahu said.

The prime minister’s public and persistent campaign against the deal, has put him at odds with Obama, creating the most serious crisis in the relations between the two leaders since they both entered office in 2009.

In his UN address on Monday, Obama did not mention Israel at all, even though he did so in all six of his past speeches at the opening sessions of the UN General Assembly.

Netanyahu, in contrast, mentioned Obama three times during his UN General Assembly speech on Thursday, in which he spoke of how the two countries would work together for a common future and thanked the US for its continued support of Israel.

“Israel deeply appreciates President Obama’s willingness to bolster our security, help Israel maintain its qualitative military edge and help Israel confront the enormous challenges we face,” Netanyahu said.

When he met with US Secretary of State John Kerry in New York on Friday, prior to departing for Israel on Saturday night, Netanyahu spoke with him about ways the two countries could move forward to combat Iranian aggression and ensure its compliance with the deal. He plans to hold a similar conversation with Obama when he mets with him in the White House in November.

“You know, we had a profound disagreement on the Iran nuclear deal.  And President Obama and I both said, well, this is a disagreement within the family,” Netanyahu told Van Susteren of Fox News.

“I appreciated the fact that President Obama called me while that deal was being discussed.  And he said, ‘Look, we can talk about bolstering Israel’s security now or later’,” Netanyahu said.

“Well, this morning was later. This was the day after. It began today,” he said.

Netanyahu then outlined three points that Israel plans to focus on in its talks with the US and in general when it comes to Iran in the coming months; ensuring Iran’s compliance with the deal, bolstering regional forces such as Israel to combat its aggression and tearing down Tehran’s global network of terror.

“We’re going to talk [with the US] and we started talking about what we need to do,” said Netanyahu.

“One is we have to keep Iran’s feet to the fire. We have to make sure it abides by its obligations under the nuclear treaty, under the nuclear deal.”

“Second, we have to bolster those forces that are working against Iran’s aggression in the region. It’s growing. And the most important party that works against Iran’s aggression in the region is Israel.”

“So I appreciated it, I look forward to the opportunity to discuss with President Obama how to put flesh on his serious commitment to bolster Israel’s security in the face of this new challenge.”

“And third, we have to tear down Iran’s global terror network, because it’s not merely increasing its aggression in the region, it’s building terror cells on five continents, including in this hemisphere,” Netanyahu said.

Israel, he said, is the most powerful country that stands in the breach of a collapsing region.

“The one party that is standing there 10 miles from ISIS, a few hundred yards from Iran’s murderous proxies, is Israel.”

“Now, we’re protecting ourselves. But in so doing, we’re also protecting the neighborhood.”

“Israel has no better ally than the United States. And the United States has no better ally than Israel. And I think the order of the day now, after the deal, is to make sure that Israel and America’s other allies are strengthened in the region against this Iranian aggression. And I look forward to this conversation with the president,” he said.

One of the places that Iran is operating in is the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, where it is trying to build a terrorist front and have even sent Iranian generals there.

If Israel is attacked from Syria, it will retaliate, he said, and added that Israel would also thwart the transfer of arms through that territory.

Last month, he said, he flew to Moscow to discuss the situation in Syria with President Vladmir Putin. The two countries are creating a mechanism by which they can operate separately in Syria, without “bumping” into each other.

Israel and Russia, “used to be in an adversarial position many years ago. I don’t think we want to get back there and I know Russia doesn’t want to get back there,” Netanyahu said.

“We’re doing our best to make sure that it doesn’t happen. And I don’t think it will happen,” he added.

He’s said it before, but this time, Yisrael Beytenu head Avigdor Liberman hopes that the powers that be will pay attention, in light of the deterioration of the security situation in Israel. “The incitement by Palestinian media and Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas proves for once and for all that we have no partner for peace,” said Liberman. “Therefore, all funding for the PA must be stopped immediately, and any special VIP permits that allow [PA officials] to travel freely must be revoked.”

Liberman spoke after a violent night in Jerusalem, in which Rabbi Nehemia Lavi, 41, and Aharon Benita Bennett, 21, were both murdered  in a terrorist attack Saturday night. Bennett’s wife, Adelle Benita, 22, and their two-year-old son, were also injured. Later Saturday night, an Arab terrorist attempted to stab a Jewish youth in central Jerusalem. The youth was moderately injured.

Writing on his Facebook page, Liberman said that the government needed to take stronger action against terrorists’ families. “All the houses belonging to terrorists should be destroyed,” he said. “The Northern Islamic Movement, which supplies many of the rioters who are tearing apart Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, must be made illegal as well. We know who they are, where they live and what their names are,” said Liberman. “We could arrest them immediately, if the Shabak (Israel Security Agency) were ordered to do so.”

Liberman also repeated his demand for a death penalty for terrorists, a hallmark of his campaign for the current Knesset. “The government must insist that security forces ensure that terrorists who carry out these attacks do not survive,” he wrote. “In addition, the heads of the Islamic Jihad and Hamas in Gaza who called for a continuation of these attacks are legitimate targets. Security forces must make sure that they have the opportunity to become the ‘shahids’ (holy martyrs) that they so greatly praise.”

Jews, Islamophobia and compassion for refugees

October 4, 2015

Jews, Islamophobia and compassion for refugees, Israel Hayom, Isi Leibler, October 4, 2015

We should be under no illusions. Most emigrants from Muslim countries have been nurtured ‎with hatred of Western values, contempt for democracy and vicious anti-Semitism. Ironically, ‎Germany’s concern to demonstrate its severance from its evil Nazi past by hosting large ‎numbers of these “refugees” will inevitably strengthen the growing Islamist anti-Semitism in ‎Germany and throughout Europe.‎

We must rationally consider the ‎long-term repercussions of our actions and, while displaying compassion and joining calls for ‎Christians and Yazidis facing genocide in Syria to be accepted as refugees in Western countries, ‎we must also avoid creating a situation in which we lay the foundations for jihadis to achieve ‎their objectives by demographic means and devour the hand that feeds them. ‎

***********************

It would be inhumane not to react with compassion to the tragic and harrowing depictions of ‎the suffering of refugees. For Jews, more than any others, these images revive horrific ‎memories of their own collective past and the horrors endured by their families and kinsman ‎when an indifferent world effectively collaborated with the Nazis by denying haven to Jews ‎seeking escape from the gas chambers.‎

In this context, it is ironic that the most generous assistance to refugees emanates from the ‎Germans, who — even setting aside the Nazi era — were hardly renowned as adherents of ‎multiculturalism. Many attribute this to a guilt reflex and atonement for Germany’s iniquities ‎during the Holocaust. ‎

It is also not surprising that many Jewish communities in Europe, North America and Australia ‎are currently at the vanguard of those calling on governments to be more liberal and accept ‎greater numbers of refugees. We also hear passionate calls from rabbis and Jewish lay leaders ‎citing religious and ethical teachings that oblige us as Jews to provide haven for refugees. ‎Former British Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks even went to the absurd extreme of making an ‎analogy between Syrian refugees and Jews in Europe during the Holocaust.‎

While reaching out and providing assistance to refugee families in distress is highly ‎commendable, to make analogies between these refugees and Jews facing the Nazi genocidal ‎policies is not merely misleading, but it also trivializes the Holocaust.‎

The Jews who found refuge from the Nazis integrated into their host societies and never ‎sought to impose their Jewish values — in stark contrast to the tensions created in Europe over ‎recent decades by Islamic migration of elements who seek to impose anti-democratic values, ‎restrict freedom of expression and promote the equivalent of Shariah law. In fact, the Jews ‎became the most committed advocates for strengthening democracy and made major ‎contributions to the economic and cultural enrichment of the countries that gave them haven. ‎

Nor can one point to a single example of a second-generation Jew transformed into a terrorist ‎by extremist rabbis, while this has been the case with many Muslim migrants. Indeed, the idea ‎of Jews engaging in terrorism in Western countries is simply inconceivable.‎

That European Union bureaucrats are pressuring European countries to absorb refugees ‎indeed reflects commendable humanitarian intentions. But there is a need to act rationally and ‎appreciate that a growing flood of Muslim migrants to Europe could lead to disaster and even ‎ultimately undermine West European civilization. ‎

That may sound hysterical and, in the current climate, such observations automatically ‎provoke accusations of Islamophobia and lack of compassion. ‎

But the reality is that the overwhelming majority of these “refugees” not only originate from ‎Muslim countries other than Syria, but 70% are estimated to be men of military age. That is to ‎say that the majority of this “refugee” population are not traditional families seeking ‎sanctuary, but men seeking economic enhancement.‎

Furthermore, these large numbers will act as a magnet which could result in profound ‎demographic changes with tens of millions of Muslims seeking to escape Arab countries for ‎better lives in Europe. Taking account of their high fertility rates in a continent with declining ‎birth rates, Islam could yet conquer Europe by demographic means, despite being vanquished ‎militarily hundreds of years ago on the battlefields.‎

Most European countries already face major problems integrating existing Muslim ‎communities, all of which include substantial extremist elements promoting objectives ‎incompatible with Western values and creating major social upheavals and conflicts.‎

It would be absurd to imagine that these migrants will somehow miraculously be integrated ‎more effectively than their predecessors. We already have the specter of second-generation ‎Muslims educated and nurtured in European countries becoming jihadis, voluntarily serving ‎in terrorist militias in Syria and returning to Western countries to embark on terrorist activities.‎

In this environment, Europe’s current security problems will exponentially increase if large ‎numbers of Islamic refugees descend upon the continent — especially as there are no means ‎of identifying or excluding potential terrorists. The reality is that a significant proportion ‎support the jihadi movement and will never be integrated into democratic societies. ‎

These are indeed difficult problems and there is no easy solution. To allow compassion to ‎determine policy without reference to long-term repercussions reflects a total lack of resolve ‎to maintain democratic values and is almost comparable to lemmings heading to the slaughter ‎‎ — a true recipe for the demise of Western civilization.‎

The reality is that Western democratic values are under threat and that while multiculturalism ‎is an idyllic concept, it can only apply in an environment where all parties accept an open ‎democratic society. Alas, the reality is that the Muslim radicals are gaining strength and while ‎distinctions between moderate and radical Muslims may apply in realpolitik on the ‎international global arena, all evidence indicates the rapid expansion of powerful and surging ‎anti-democratic and jihadi elements in every expatriate Muslim community.‎

This is further highlighted by the astonishing but adamant refusal of the wealthy Arab oil ‎countries — Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, which import vast numbers of Asian workers — ‎to absorb even a minimal number of their own kinsman. They justify their exclusion on the ‎grounds that such people will create disorder and represent security risks.‎

It is also scandalous that the Arab League and the 57-state Organization of the Islamic ‎Conference make pious comments but turn to the non-Muslim international community to ‎resolve issues created by Islamist extremism from their own ranks. The wealthy Muslim states ‎should be obliged to take the lead role in efforts to integrate their own people. ‎

There must be an intensive effort to stabilize the Middle East region. In this context, it should ‎be noted that the barbarism that today dominates the region is a direct outcome of U.S. ‎President Barack Obama’s concern not to alienate the Iranians, and the repudiation of his ‎commitment to act against the Syrians after Bashar Assad used chemical weapons against his ‎own people. ‎

There are no easy solutions but the Western world must seek to resolve these problems ‎without paving the way for anti-democratic forces to destroy our way of life. As Jews, despite ‎identifying with the harrowing images of suffering endured by those seeking to find a better ‎life in Western countries, we must not let ourselves be ruled by emotions or intimidated by the ‎threat that we will be accused of engaging in Islamophobia. ‎

Russia Claims ISIS Now On The Ropes As Fighters Desert After 60 Airstrikes In 72 Hours

Russia Claims ISIS Now On The Ropes As Fighters Desert After 60 Airstrikes In 72 Hours

Source: Russia Claims ISIS Now On The Ropes As Fighters Desert After 60 Airstrikes In 72 Hours | Zero Hedge

One question that’s been asked repeatedly over the past thirteen months is why Washington has been unable to achieve the Pentagon’s stated goal of “degrading and defeating” ISIS despite the fact that the “battle” pits the most advanced air force on the planet against what amounts to a ragtag band of militants running around the desert in basketball shoes.

Those of a skeptical persuasion have been inclined to suggest that perhaps the US isn’t fully committed to the fight. Explanations for that suggestion range from the mainstream (the White House is loathe to get the US into another Mid-East war) to the “conspiratorial” (the CIA created ISIS and thus doesn’t want to destroy the group due to its value as a strategic asset).

The implication in all of this is that a modern army that was truly determined to destroy the group could likely do so in a matter of months if not weeks and so once Russia began flying sorties from Latakia, the world was anxious to see just how long the various rebel groups operating in Syria could hold up under bombardment by the Russian air force.

The answer, apparently, is “less than a week.”

On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defense said it has conducted 60 bombing runs in 72 hours, hitting more than 50 ISIS targets.

According to the ministry (Facebook page is here), Islamic State fighters are in a state of “panic” and more than 600 have deserted.

Here’s what happens when the Russians locate a terrorist “command center”:

According to The Kremlin, the structure shown in the video is (or, more appropriately, “was”) “an ISIS hardened command centre near Raqqah.” Su-34s hit it with concrete-piercing BETAB-500s setting off a series of explosions and fires that “completely destroyed the object.”

Here’s RT:

Surgical airstrikes by Russian fighter jets have knocked out a number of Islamic State installations in Syria, including the battle headquarters of a jihadist group near Raqqa, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

“Over the past 24 hours, Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M fighter jets have performed 20 sorties and hit nine Islamic State installations,” Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, reported.

Konashenkov added that yesterday evening Russian aircraft went on six sorties, inflicting strikes on three terrorist installations.

“A bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb dropped from a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber near Raqqa has eliminated the command post of one of the terror groups, together with an underground storage facility for explosives and munitions,” the spokesman said.

Commenting on the video filmed by a Russian UAV monitoring the assault near Raqqa, Konashenkov noted, “a powerful explosion inside the bunker indicates it was also used for storing a large quantity of munitions.

“As you can see, a direct hit on the installation resulted in the detonation of explosives and multiple fires. It was completely demolished,” the spokesman said.

And here’s the Russian Defense Ministry taking a page out of the US Postal Service’s “neither rain, sleet, snow, nor hail” book on the way to serving notice that nothing is going to stop the Russian air force from exterminating Assad’s enemies in Syria:

Twenty-four hours a day #UAV’s are monitoring the situation in the ISIS activity areas. All the detected targets are effectively engaged day and night in any weather conditions.

Now obviously one must consider the source here, but Kremlin spin tactics aside, one cannot help but be amazed with the pace at which this is apparently unfolding. If any of the above is even close to accurate, it means that Russia is on schedule to declare victory over ISIS (and everyone else it looks like) in a matter of weeks, which would not only be extremely embarrassing for Washington, but would also effectively prove that the US has never truly embarked on an honest effort to rid Syria of the extremist groups the Western media claims are the scourge of humanity.

Palestinian Authority Slams ‘Killing’ of Two Terrorists

Palestinian Authority Slams ‘Killing’ of Two Terrorists, Israel National News, Cynthia Blank, October 4, 2015

The PA, however, neglected to mention anything about the fatal stabbing attacks perpetrated by those same terrorists.

Israel leading region into ‘new cycle of violence,’ Palestinian Authority bizarrely accuses in wake of two Arab terror attacks.

After blasting the temporary ban imposed on Palestinians from entering the Old City of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority (PA) released another statement on Sunday slamming the deaths of two terrorists in the capital.

The PA, however, neglected to mention anything about the fatal stabbing attacks perpetrated by those same terrorists.

“The Authority condemns Israeli escalation in Jerusalem and the West Bank, including the killing of two young men in occupied Jerusalem and demands international protection for Palestinians,” read the communique issued by PA headquarters.

The “two young men,” the PA refers to appear to be twoIslamist terrorists each responsible for a separate attack in the Old City over the weekend. Both terrorists were neutralized by police after stabbing Israelis.

In the first attack on Saturday night, the terrorist killed two Israeli men and wounded a woman and a toddler in a knife and gun attack.

In a separate incident early Sunday, the other terrorist stabbed and wounded a 15-year-old boy in Jerusalem near Damascus Gate.

The PA also denounced “settlers,” accusing them of attacking Palestinian villages overnight with “the backing of the army of the occupation.”

A PA spokesman further claimed that “Israel wants to destroy the solution of ‘two states for two peoples,’ thereby leading the region into a new cycle of violence.”

The accusation comes despite Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu asserting only three days ago that he was prepared to immediately resume direct negotiations with the PA without any preconditions.

Merkel says can only end Syrian war with Russia’s help HALLE, Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that it would be possible to end to the civil war in Syria only with the help of Russia, which this week launched airstrikes in the war-torn country.

Speaking of the refugee crisis, Merkel said it was necessary to tackle the issues causing people to flee their homes.

“That’s particularly true of Syria, where we have all known for years that there can only be a solution with Russian and not without Russia,” Merkel said at speech in eastern Germany to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of German reunification.

The United States took a different stance, with the White House saying Russia’s military actions in Syria risked prolonging the conflict in Syria.

On Thursday, Russian warplanes, in a second day of strikes, bombed a camp run by rebels trained by the CIA, the group’s commander said.

US Tells EU: You’re Not Invited To Syria Peace Talks

US Tells EU: You’re Not Invited To Syria Peace Talks While Europe is bearing the refugee burden, the Americans only want Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey at the table

This article originally appeared in German Economic News. Translated from the German by Paul Dunne.

Source: US Tells EU: You’re Not Invited To Syria Peace Talks

The US government has torpedoed European recommendations for a multi-lateral Syrian peace conference.  In principle, Washington is in favour of peace talks – but without the EU at the table.  The EU is bearing the greater part of the burden of the explusions [sic] from Syria.  However the EU has also obviously wasted its chances with Russia.

There was a dispute between European diplomats and their US colleagues on the fringes of the UN General Assembly.  The French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, had proposed a format for Syria similar to that used in the Iranian nuclear weapons affair.  Great Britain, France and Germany came out strongly in favour of meeting alongside the USA, China, Russia and Iran.
Clearly the idea of treating Iran not as adversary but as partner aroused discontent among the Americans.  As the Times of Israel reported, citing the Associated Press, the Americans said that such a format would be sensible – without the EU at the table.  The discussions with Iran were started by the three EU states [mentioned above].  The Americans declined in 2006 to sit at the same table with Iran.  Only three years later did Washington relent and take part in the discussions which eventually lead to an agreement.
The USA wants only the Russians, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey at the conference.
With its unconditional acquiescence in US foreign policy, the EU seems to have spoiled its chances with the Russians – at least for the present.  The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that he considers the participation of the USA, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, Iran and Jordan for reasonable.

Gorbachev’s interview with Bild is connected with the Day of German Unity – a major holiday celebrated on October 3 to commemorate the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990.

As the president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev played a major role in signing the treaty on the final settlement in Germany that paved the way to unification. He is still criticized at home for not pressing for enough compensation for Russia or for allowing it to happen at all.

In early 2015, Gorbachev lashed back at his critics who prepared a parliamentary resolution denouncing the German reunification as an act of aggression.

You cannot evaluate the events that took place in a different epoch, in different times from today’s positions,” Gorbachev said. “The suggestion is simply rubbish. I will say this again – we cannot simplify the situation to the convenience of today’s needs and our appraisal of the past should not be based on today’s views.”

In late 2014, Gorbachev urged all European leaders to help tone down the contradictions between Russia and the United States and thus help shape a new world order. “There are signs of Cold War” in the recent cooling down of relations between Moscow and Washington over Russia’s accession of the Crimea and the turmoil in Ukraine, Gorbachev said. “We can and we must stop this whole process, as we did in the 1980s. We opted for de-escalation, for the unification [of Germany]. And back then it was a lot tougher than now. So why can’t we do it again?” he said.

NATO has started its biggest exercise since 2002 with 36,000 international troops from 30 states, including non-NATO nations, participating in the drills which are taking place at sea, in the air and across the territory of three European states.

The alliance has kicked off its massive “Trident Juncture 2015” exercises which will last until November 16. Along with the NATO member states, seven more partner nations are participating in the drills: Australia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Sweden and Ukraine.

Some 36,000 troops as well as more than 60 warships and about 200 aircraft will participate in the drills which makes it the biggest since 2002 when about 40,000 troops took part in NATO’s “Strong Resolve” military exercise.

The purpose of the exercise is to train and test the NATO Response Force, a highly ready and technologically advanced multinational force made up of land, air, maritime and Special Forces components,” said General Hans Lothar Domrose, the Commander of Joint Force Command Brunssum.

“Enhancing our response forces is a key part of NATO’s overall effort to adapt to emerging security challenges. TRJE15 [Trident Juncture 2015] has been designed to ensure that our concepts and procedures will work in the event of a real crisis because our job is to always be prepared to defend the people, territory, and values of this Alliance,” he added.

The drills will consist of two parts: the Command Post Exercise (CPX) for Strategic and Operational level staff, and the Live Exercise (LIVEX) for tactical level troop engagements.

The CPX, which will last until October 16, will include “training, evaluation and certification activities” of the command structure of the NATO Response Force. The European Union and the African Union are also going to participate in the CPX.

LIVEX will be held in Italy, Portugal and Spain between October 21 and November 6. NATO air forces, land forces as well as maritime forces will conduct a number of exercises – for example, responding to a simultaneous, wide-scale attack of a group of 20 enemy ships, numerous aircraft and four submarines.

In late August-September NATO conducted the greatest airborne drills in Europe since the end of the Cold War. About 5,000 soldiers from 11 NATO member states participated in the “simultaneous multinational airborne operations.”

NATO has significantly stepped up its military presence and activity along the Russian border, including in the Baltic states and eastern Europe, since Russia’s reunification with Crimea and the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine, which the alliance blames on Moscow.
