The Islamic State (IS) burned alive 45 Iraqis in the town of Khan al-Baghdadi on Tuesday. It remains unclear who the victims were, but its likely they were a combination of IA personnel and pro-government tribal fighters who were cut off and isolated when the rest of the town’s garrison fled in panic. We also hear that some of the families of security personnel may be among the victims, although that remains unconfirmed at this time. The location of the executions isn’t a coincidence as Khan al-Baghdadi is only 5 miles from al-Asad Airbase. The message IS sent to the Obama administration is clear: “We’re doing this right in front of your American military and there’s nothing they can do about it. In fact, they’re too scared to do anything.” This act throws more fuel on the propaganda fire and it also fuels the whole “Flames of War” theme they’ve been going with these days.

Every six months we’ve seen an exponential growth for IS. We have about two more years of President Obama’s weak responses and complete lack of understanding the problem that could allow IS to grow somewhere between 4-8 times larger than it is now by the time he leaves office. If one were to overlay the areas AQI/IS controlled during OIF the thing that would be noticed is they controlled very little areas in Iraq such as safe-houses and maybe some specific neighborhoods and desert areas in 2008. From late-2010 you’d begin to see the end of IS’ decline (ISI during this time), overlay that around OCT 12, OCT 13 through OCT 14 and you will see the startling growth pattern. In two more years of limited airstrikes it will control a sizable chunk of Libya, parts of Egypt, Most of Syria and the Kurds of Iraq will be hanging by a thread. By then we’ll probably see Western Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan carved up between IS and the Taliban/AQ. In Nigeria, Mali, Morocco, Algeria and other Maghreb nations we may see open conflict by the later part of this time frame. Some of them are already in open conflict and others are seeing latent-incipient stages of conflict. What we do know is that Islamic State has been sending cadre of seasoned commanders to organize groups like Boko Haram, which if you look at their strength and growth you will see it gaining momentum in tandem with the Islamic State over the past 12 months. These cadre from Islamic State are likely natives of the lands they are sent to organize already existing movements. Islamic State has also attracted military professionals from some of the 90 plus countries it has been able to recruit from. Some people will look at this with great skepticism, but 5 years ago the Islamic State was a skeleton compared to what it is now. This is something that we here at the ISIS Study Group have been talking about since we started posting articles about the Islamic State in the summer of 2014. The US needs to begin an aggressive campaign to regain the initiative to include providing more material support to Arab allies such as Egypt and Jordan. The United States and indeed the rest of the world cannot afford to have a President Buchanan type in the White House right now which is exactly what Barack Obama is doing. He is doing the minimum hoping to run out the presidential clock without a major incident and pass this problem off to the next president where it could be exponentially worse as we’ve stated.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration remains oblivious to the threat. Just recently DoS spokeswoman Marie Harf got on TV and said that “we can’t kill our way to victory” and then said that the root cause of the threat is all jihadists really want are “jobs” – just like what the delusional Danish government thinks. Ms. Harf is a reflection of the incompetence that’s endemic throughout the Obama administration’s DoS and National Security Council. Its highly unlikely that she even understands any of the things she gets told to say on TV. Meanwhile, other members of the administration are either downplaying the threat to our 300 Marines stationed at al-Asad Airbase or they’re puffing out their chests claiming how “easy” it will be to “kill more IS fighters because they’ll all be in one place.” However, IS has proven to be extremely resilient and are adapting to US airstrikes and our overly restrictive ROE – which they’re exploiting to the fullest. Yes, al-Asad is a large base and yes, it will take a sizable force – and time – to completely secure it. As the fall of the Syrian Army’s 17th Division and Taqba Airbase have demonstrated, IS has quickly applied lessons learned to refine their TTPs for follow-on operations. The current siege of al-Asad Airbase has already demonstrated several of these lessons. Unless aggressive action is taken now, our troops will be in even greater risk than they are now in the coming days. Ms. Harf and the rest of the Obama administration doesn’t understand this because they’ve never served a day in the lives in the military. If they did, they would know that this enemy can’t be reasoned with, they can’t be bargained with and they absolutely will not stop until they’ve eradicate the world of all “nonbelievers” or “Kufar.” This is how Baghdadi and his followers think – jobs or a free phone is nowhere on their list of priorities. They also only respect strength through instilling fear, which is a common theme with everything they do. Until the Obama administration – and its European counterparts – comes to terms with this, IS will continue to expand and threaten the civilized world.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt publicly denied the existence of a terror cell operating in Copenhagen despite the fact that Danish security forces conducted a series of raids on Monday that resulted in the detainment of two known associates of Omar Abdel Hamid al-Hussein, who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). Both associates – aged 19 and 22 – are being chafed with being an accessory to murder and five counts of accessory to attempted murder. “Accessory” as in helping the guys (oh yes there were others involved) who carried out the attack? As in a “cell” that might be part of a greater network? We think PM Schmidt doesn’t understand what a cell is or how it works. If she did, she wouldn’t have made the comment since a cell consists of multiple personnel that can range from as few as three individuals to as many as 20 (although with this many we start to enter network territory). A cell has people who provide intelligence support, logistical support, command and of course carrying out the operation. No, PM Schmidt, your security forces are conducting raids on a cell and there are likely still some members at-large. The ugly truth of the matter is the Danish government remains stuck in their mindset of not wanting to “offend” the Muslim community.

PM Schmidt also made an appeal to Denmark’s Jewish community in response to Bibi Netanyahu’s call for Jews to leave Europe and migrate to Israel. Schmidt says that “Europe won’t be the same if the Jews leave,” but what has she or the other empty suits occupying the highest political offices in the EU members done to counter the growing threat of jihadists? The Jews are the canaries of Europe’s mines – the fact that they’re starting to leave places like France, Belgium, the UK, Germany and several other European countries in droves is a significant red flag that not even Schmidt and her government can deny. This isn’t a new phenomenon either, as we’ve been seeing a steady increase in Jews leaving Europe over the past year due to the rising anti-semitism plaguing the EU. It should surprise no one that this increase in anti-semitism coincides with the exploding immigrant populations of people from Muslim countries known for their anti-western and anti-Jew sentiments. However, its not just anti-Semitic Muslim groups that Jews are worried about – there’s plenty of homegrown fascist Euro groups who share the jihadist sentiments about the Jewish people.

So why would Jews want to leave Europe besides the obvious attacks that occurred in Copenhagen over the weekend and last months attacks in France? For starters, there are Muslim-dominated neighborhoods in Germany that the Police refuse to patrol through because they’re so dangerous. This has allowed for jihadists to install their own “shadow governments” based off Sharia Law – and even have gangs of thugs wearing orange vests operating as the “Sharia Police.” The only reason the Germans did anything about it is because some international news outlets began covering the roving Jihadist patrols in the town of Wuppertal – which is one of several in Germany, France and the UK that we’ve heard about. Our staff doesn’t know what’s more disturbing, the fact that there’s “Sharia Police” or the fact that the German government seemed more concerned about receiving negative press as opposed to the fact that jihadist influences are growing within their own borders. We see the same problems in what’s being allowed to occur in Denmark.

As we stated above, our staff has seen the very same shadow governments established at the local-level in Denmark that we’ve seen elsewhere in Europe – and that the Denmark zones have been operating for several years. Despite the Danish government’s best efforts to maintain the illusion that they’re the one country in the EU that doesn’t have a deteriorating security environment, the truth is they’re not immune. For instance, in 2011 the group known as Call to Islam openly campaign for the abolishment of democracy and calling on people not to vote in the Parliamentary elections held in SEP of that year. As we also stated in our 15 FEB 15 piece titled “Jihadist Infestation: Terrorism Results in Copenhagen Chaos,” IS facilitator Anjem Choudray’s Hizb ut-Tahrir (HUT) has been very active in the country. HUT held a “Proud of Sharia” meeting in Norrebrohallen in DEC 14. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how to counter the Copenhagen city government’s proposed integration plan, which has a stated goal of getting the “number of Copenhageners who support Sharia Law to fall.” HUT’s stance on the city plan was that it was an “attack against Islam and Muslims” (sound familiar?) and held the meeting to demonstrate the support for Sharia Law that exists in the area. The city government plan? They think they can integrate people into Danish society that want to be integrated. This plan would work except for the fact that the people the government is privately concerned about have no desire to integrate and if anything are demanding that Danish society conforms to Sharia Law. In fact, Choudray himself visited Denmark in JUL 14 to set up more HUT offices in the Copenhagen-area and hold lectures on how to travel to Syria and the preach the virtues of Baghdadi’s “Caliphate.” The people who wanted to integrate into the mainstream have already done so and aren’t associated with groups and people like HUT, Choudray, Bilal Philips or the Islamic Society of Denmark – which btw was designated a terror organization by the UAE.

Every group associated with IS facilitators such as Bilal Philips and Anjem Choudray have received specific guidance from the two men and their trusted acolytes to snuff out free speech and further the cause of the global jihadist community. This is done through specific Islamic centers directly linked to their organizations that receive money for the purpose of recruitment, radicalization and facilitating travel of personnel to Syria to serve as foreign fighters for IS. We’ve seen this same activity from supporters of these men in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, France, Germany and the UK (just to name a few). Ten times out of ten if you come across an Islamic center or Mosque tied to either of these two men or their organizations, it means those institutions are being used to facilitate terrorism in some manner. Bibi and the European Jewish community see the writing on the wall and a lot of them don’t plan on sticking around in Europe long enough to see if the EU governments will actually start cracking down on the rising jihadist threat. We don’t blame them because its not safe for Jews or any American living abroad. PM Schmidt and her fellow empty suits better do something soon because the attacks in her country and France are only the beginning…

Egypt Battles ISIS and Sharia Supremacism

How does Egypt differ from Saudi Arabia and Qatar? Two ways: (1) It was not invited to join President Obama’s ballyhooed “coalition” of Arab Muslim states fighting against ISIS, and (2) it is actually fighting against ISIS.

Obama, of course, has aligned himself with the anti-American, anti-Western and anti-Semitic Muslim Brotherhood, which, like ISIS, wants to impose sharia globally. Thus the State Department continues to host and consult with the Brotherhood about the future of Egypt, even though the Brotherhood has been outlawed as a terrorist organization – the government it dominated having been ousted from power after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to demand its removal.

Meanwhile, the new government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who was elected by a wide margin after the Brotherhood was cashiered, is taking the fight to ISIS – including cooperating with Israel in the Sinai, where ISIS is working with Hamas (the Brotherhood’s Palestinian branch), as Caroline Glick detailed last week, here.

Moreover, the New York Times reports that Egypt is conducting airstrikes against ISIS’s new operations base in Libya (the country that Islamists have destabilized and largely overrun thanks to President Obama’s decision to help Islamists overthrow the Qaddafi regime). Unlike the former Brotherhood government that freed jihadist leaders and abetted the persecution of Coptic Christians, Sisi’s government is attacking the jihadists to avenge ISIS’s savage murder of Egyptian Christians. The Times’ David Kirkpatrick notes that:

The Egyptian military said on Monday that it had carried out two rounds of airstrikes in Libya in retaliation for the beheading of more than a dozen Egyptian Christians by a branch of the Islamic State extremist group there.

In a statement Monday morning, the Egyptian military said that it had conducted airstrikes at dawn against training camps and arms depots of the Islamic State group in Libya, but it did not provide further details. The Foreign Ministry said that Egyptian warplanes had struck Derna, a town in eastern Libya that is a hub of Islamist militancy.

In a televised address late Sunday night, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt vowed that his country would take action to avenge the killings.

“Egypt preserves the right to respond, with the appropriate manner and timing, in order to carry out retribution on those killers and criminals who are stripped of the most basic of human values,” Mr. Sisi said.

The Egyptian military said in a statement issued around 8:30 a.m. that the dawn strikes were “retribution and response to the criminal acts of terrorist elements and organizations inside and outside the country.”

“We stress that revenge for the blood of Egyptians, and retribution from the killers and criminals, is a right we must dutifully enforce,” the statement said. Egyptian state television showed footage of F-16s taking off in the dark as the statement was read on the air.

Egypt’s air assault came less than 12 hours after the main Islamic State group released a video online that appeared to show fighters from the group’s self-proclaimed Tripolitania Province beheading more than a dozen Egyptian Christians.

The Christians were among the thousands of Egyptians who routinely travel across the border to Libya to find work in its oil-rich economy, forging a deep connection between the two neighboring states. About 20 Egyptian Christians disappeared around the coastal city of Surt weeks ago, and last month the Tripolitania Province released a picture showing that it had captured them.

As Roger Simon and Ray Ibrahim have recounted, Sisi, a devout Muslim, began this year by admonishing Islam’s most influential scholars at al-Azhar University that Islam must reform – that it must, in his words, have a “religious revolution.” He was not simply making the fatuous but oft-repeated claims that Islam is innately peaceful and predominantly practiced in moderation. He was imploring sharia jurists to reject unambiguously both violent jihadism and, crucially, the scripturally-rooted ideology that fuels this terrorism:

It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma [Islamic world] to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible!

That thinking—I am not saying “religion” but “thinking”—that corpus of texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the years, to the point that departing from them has become almost impossible, is antagonizing the entire world.

So here we have what American officials have always said we’ve desperately needed: A respected Muslim leader of a vitally important Muslim country who is courageously opposing – in word and deed – the jihadists and their ideology. And what is the president of the United States doing? He is denying them the support they need and driving them into the arms of Vladimir Putin.

Besides remaining miffed that Egypt has outlawed the Brotherhood, Obama is busy helping Iran become a nuclear power – even as Iran-backed terrorists seize Yemen and target Israel. So Russia has moved in, pledging to aid economically strapped Cairo in both fighting terrorists and building a nuclear power industry.

If President Obama did not have a disastrous foreign policy, he’d have no foreign policy. Our Islamic allies in combating “violent extremism” are not sharia-supremacists like the Muslim Brotherhood and the regimes in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Our ally is Egypt.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Monday that Israel would always be “haunted by the blood” of Imad Mughniyeh, the group’s former military leader who was killed in an Damascus car-bombing widely attributed to Israel in 2008.

Speaking at an event commemorating Hezbollah’s “martyrs,” Nasrallah also spoke of Imad Mughniyeh’s son, Jihad, as a martyr. Jihad Mughniyeh was killed in an airstrike on a Hezbollah convoy in southern Syria last month that has also been attributed to Israel.

“The blood of the martyr Jihad has revived the memory of the commander Hajj Imad Mughniyeh and returned this brilliant and historic leader to the forefront of events once again, confirming that his presence is still strong in the minds of friends and in the mind of the enemy, which will always be haunted by Imad Mughniyeh’s blood,” Naharnet quoted Nasrallah as saying.

Nasrallah also spoke out against the threat of Sunni jihad groups, saying he supports calls for a national counter-terrorism strategy to confront the jihadi threat. He said that Hezbollah agrees with its political opponents in Lebanon, such as former prime minister Rafik Hariri, on the need for a strategy to fight terrorists. However he added that they disagreed on the need to fight Israel.

Nasrallah opened his speech by strongly condemning Islamic State terrorists who decapitated 21 Coptic Christian Egyptians in Libya on Sunday.

“I want to strongly condemn ISIS’s crime against the Egyptian workers, which cannot be tolerated by any religion. We extend our condolences to the Egyptian people and the Coptic Church and this crime has affected both Islam and Christianity,” Naharnet quoted him as saying.

Islamic State ‘province’ in Libya claims capture of town

One of the Islamic State’s so-called “provinces” in Libya claims to have captured the town of Nawfaliyah. The group has released a photo set showing a large convoy entering the town. The military-style parade likely took place earlier this month. One of the photos can be seen above and the rest are at the end of this article.

In addition to the jihadists’ purported gains in Nawfaliyah, the organization’s fighters seized several key buildings, including radio and television stations, in the city of Sirte. Separate photos posted on social media show the Islamic State’s province broadcasting propaganda from one of the captured media facilities. The WAL News Agency in Libya reports that the radio station has been broadcasting a speech by Abu Muhammad al Adnani, the Islamic State’s spokesman.

The Islamic State’s province also seized control of a passport office in Sirte, demanding that its employees “repent” for their failure to swear fealty to the “caliphate.”

Assessing the extent of the Islamic State’s presence in Libya and elsewhere is difficult, as the group’s propaganda machine has exaggerated its fighters’ gains. (The same is true for the Islamic State’s jihadist rivals.) For instance, press reports said late last year that the Islamic State’s supporters had taken over the city of Derna, with a population of about 100,000 residents. But this wasn’t true.

While the Islamic State has a significant presence in Derna, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s followers are not in control of the entire city. Other jihadist groups that are not allied with the Islamic State, including the Abu Salim Martyrs Brigade (ASMB), remain deeply entrenched in Derna. In December, the ASMB announced the creation of the Mujahideen Shura Council (MSC) of Derna, a jihadist alliance that has not sworn allegiance to Baghdadi. The United Nations has even erroneously reported that Ansar al Sharia in Derna, which is part of al Qaeda’s network and allied with the MSC, has defected to the Islamic State. This isn’t true either, as Ansar al Sharia’s leadership has not come out in favor of Baghdadi.

Still, the Islamic State’s network in Libya has been growing. And independent reports confirm that the group has been operating in and around Sirte.

In early February, gunmen attacked an oil field south of Sirte, killing 12 people. The French oil company Total owns a stake in the field, and French officials blamed the attack on the Islamic State’s followers.

The Islamic State’s jihadists have also kidnapped 21 Egyptian Coptic workers in Sirte. The Guardian (UK) reports that the men were captured in two separate operations in December and January.

The Coptic hostages were featured in the latest edition of Dabiq, the Islamic State’s English-language magazine, which was released last week. Photos in Dabiq show the men being marched along the coastline as their captors brandish knives. The images are reminiscent of how the Islamic State has paraded and then beheaded its captives in Iraq and Syria.

Dozens of Toyota trucks are pictured in the Islamic State’s photo set from Nawfaliyah. The photos suggest a large presence of Islamic State fighters, perhaps totaling in the hundreds.

It is by now no secret that the Palestinian Authority uses large portions of the international financial aid it receives to provide salaries and other payouts to terrorists who kill Jews.

But a fresh investigation by journalist Edwin Black has revealed that this is not some automatic, blind welfare system, but rather a very deliberate effort to reward those who have chosen the path of violence, and therefore encourage others to do the same.

America today contributes about $400 million a year in direct financial aid to the Palestinian Authority, and another $400 in other assistance and investments. The European Union provides a similar amount.

In 2011, Itamar Marcus of Palestinian Media Watch spoke before the US Congress to explain how this money was being cynically used to encourage the slaughter of Israeli Jews by paying healthy monthly salaries to those sitting in Israeli jails, or to the families of terrorists killed during successful attacks.

A year later, two Hamas operatives from the Gaza Strip admitted to an Israeli court that they had gotten into terrorism game in order to earn a decent living. Killing Jews, they said, was the best way to secure a good and steady income.

Last summer, Israel’s Knesset was shocked to learn that in 2012 the Palestinian Authority had paid no less than $150 million to jailed terrorists and their families. It was further revealed that these salaries were determined on a sliding scale according to the length of the terrorists’ sentence. In other words, the more Jews killed, the worse the sentence and the bigger the reward.

In the course of his research, Black successfully sued to gain access to previously court-sealed documents pertaining to cases heard before US courts.

Those documents revealed what Black called a “meticulous, exacting official process” in which Palestinian leaders all the way up to President Mahmoud Abbas were involved in the direct reward and encouragement of terrorism against Israel’s Jews.

One example from the documents details the case of a Palestinian Authority police officer who in 2002 participated in a number of terrorist attacks that left a total of 12 Israelis dead and many more wounded. Following his capture, Israel sentenced the officer to 13 life sentences.

The case was only reviewed in 2009, but the Palestinian Authority decided to retroactively compensate the terrorist policeman back to the time of his incarceration. He was even later given promotions and accompanying pay raises while sitting in an Israeli jail.

A second example involved a terrorist, also a member of the Palestinian Authority security forces, who was killed while carrying out an attack that left two Israelis dead on the streets of Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Social Affairs subsequently determined that this terrorist, like many others, was “martyred while performing his national duty,” and that his closest living relative, his mother, would be compensated accordingly.

Black concluded by noting that “most taxpayers in donor countries have no idea that their well-intended money is actually financing the flames of terrorism.”

Almost no perpetrators of senseless, random, violent extremism are Muslims. Obama’s war on violent, random and senseless non-Islamic extremism will end the cycle of violence. Soon, all will come to trust and love us.

Here are just a few videos of non-Muslims engaged in extreme and senseless random violence.

The woman who was attacked was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She has only herself to blame and should have known better.

Like the senseless random attacks on Charlie Hedbo and a grocery store in France, this was also the fault of the alleged victim.

Even our best friends can do it.

Finally, here’s absolute proof of my analysis;

Whoops. Wrong video, but there is no proof that these folks were in any way motivated to engage in senseless, extremist and random violence by the religion of peace. Nobody is, and there is not one single word in the Holy Koran, other Muslim Holy texts or in Sharia law that so much as tolerates senseless, random extremist violence!

Besides, others do it too. Obama is absolutely right in not supporting savages like these bloodthirsty cowards in their efforts to murder innocent adherents to the religion of peace!

Senator Ted Cruz is wrong to claim that any senseless random violent extremism is Islamic.

Senator Librul is correct in stating that Islam does not promote senseless, random violence. However, he fails to explain why: Islamic violence is almost always directed against those viewed as enemies of Islam. It is therefore purposeful, not senseless. Nor, for the same reason, is it “random.” And, as I contend here, it is not “extremist.”

Here is a suggestion from one of Senator Librul’s many devoted followers:

As soon as we remove all deer crossing signs directing deer to dangerous places for highway crossings they will find safe places to cross instead. On a parallel theory, as we cease to attribute senseless, random “extremist” violence to Islam, there will be no violence of that type of which we can properly accuse Muslims.

As is his wont, Senator Librul hit the hammer on the head with the nail. The Center for American Progress most likely agrees. Although People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) may disagree, Obama’s pup Bo has graciously offered to help.

Soon Bo, with Obama leading bravely as always from behind, will end senseless non-Islamic random violence. Then, the world will be a safer and better place in which we will all enjoy peace and happiness in our time. Right?

End random, senseless “extremist” Islamic violence? What’s that? Obama and Senator Librul deem there to be none and they are probably correct. So what’s the rush?

The infinitely wise Dear Leader of North Korea, Kim Chi-un, has proclaimed, “let us turn ours into a country of mushrooms!” “Our very own” infinitely wise Dear Leader Obama is doing His best to beat him to it.

Obama’s task of mushrooming* will be easier, and not only because He has no doppelganger to pester Him. Of greatest importance, He already has a tremendous head start.

*To keep in the dark and feed a rich diet of manure.

Iraqi security forces on Friday repelled an attack by Islamic State insurgents against an air base in Anbar province where U.S. Marines are training Iraqi troops, Iraqi and U.S. military officials said.

Militants from the jihadist group had attacked the Ain al-Asad base and the nearby town of al-Baghdadi a day earlier, leading to sporadic clashes in the town overnight.

Al-Baghdadi has been besieged for months by Islamic State, which captured swathes of northern and western Iraq last year, prompting a campaign of U.S.-led airstrikes and the deployment of hundreds of U.S. military advisers to the country.

A U.S. defense official said the Iraqi forces had stopped the attack and re-secured the facility.

“Coalition forces were several kilometers from the attack and at no stage were they under direct threat from this action,” the official said.

About 320 U.S. Marines are training members of the Iraqi 7th Division at the base, which has been struck by mortar fire on at least one previous occasion since December.

Iraq’s Defense Ministry said on its website the Iraqi army killed eight assailants near the base, which is about 85 km (50 miles) northwest of Ramadi.

An Iraqi military official in Baghdad told Reuters the insurgents had taken advantage of a lull in the airstrikes, caused by poor weather, to launch the offensive.

He said Islamic State had been cleared from most of al-Baghdadi, with the remaining fighting centered around a police station.

That conflicted with reports from a tribal leader who said the jihadists were still in control of much of the town.

Ongoing clashes and poor communications in the area made it difficult to confirm such reports.

U.S. defense officials told CNN there are no plans to evacuate U.S. personnel from the air base, which is just a few miles from al-Baghdadi, but security officials said the militants are closing in on it and Iraqi forces are calling for reinforcements.

According to officials, the base has not been attacked but is taking sporadic indirect fire from militants in the form of rocket launchers and mortars.

Two security officials told CNN that security forces from the base killed eight suicide bombers on Friday who were trying to penetrate the air base.

At the same time, a U.S. defense official said that U.S. troops do not consider themselves trapped, are not contemplating a ground engagement with the Islamic State, and there have been no injuries to U.S. forces at the base, CNN said.

“It bears watching,” retired Col. Thomas Lynch, a National Defense University fellow, told Fox News, regarding the reports.

He stressed, however, that for the militants to be a real threat to the base they would need get through the perimeter.

“It’s not impossible,” Lynch said, but to do it they would have to amass a large number of fighters — which would make them “vulnerable” to airstrikes.
