A Hamas official on Wednesday acknowledged that 50 of the 62 Palestinians reported killed during Gaza border riots on Monday and Tuesday were members of the Islamist terrorist group, bringing the total number of known members of terror groups among the fatalities up to 53.

“In the last rounds of confrontations, if 62 people were martyred, 50 of them were Hamas,” said Hamas official Salah Bardawil in a television interview.

The Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad had said on Tuesday that three members of its Saraya al-Quds military wing were killed by Israeli forces in Khan Younis.

The Israeli military shared a portion of Bardawil’s interview with an Arabic news outlet, accompanied by English captions.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, 62 people in total were killed during border clashes on Monday and Tuesday.

Israel has not put out its own official death toll, but officials have questioned the accuracy of the Hamas-provided figure. In one case, a Gazan doctor told the Associated Press that an 8-month-old baby, who the Gaza ministry said died after inhaling Israeli tear gas on Monday, had a preexisting medical condition and that he did not believe her death was caused by tear gas.

The Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday had said that at least 24 members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed in day-long clashes Monday. At that stage, Hamas acknowledged 10 of the dead were its members.

The IDF said its number was based on a joint investigation with the Shin Bet security service.

“Most of the people [from terror groups] killed belonged to the Hamas terror group, and some to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” an IDF spokesperson said.

Among the dead, the IDF said on Tuesday, were all eight members of a cell of armed Hamas operatives who were killed in a gun battle as they sought to breach the fence in the northern Gaza Strip.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 60 people were killed in Monday’s demonstrations, most by gunfire, and more than 2,700 were injured. Another two Palestinian men were killed Tuesday as smaller protests broke out in Gaza, the ministry said.

Israel has blamed Hamas for the deadly violence, saying the terror group encouraged and led the protests, which included attacks on Israeli troops and attempts to breach the border fence. The IDF said Sunday that Hamas planned to send armed terrorists through any breach in the fence to “massacre” Israelis.

After the first “March of Return” protests in March, Hamas acknowledged that five of its terrorists were among the fatalities, but it subsequently refrained from acknowledging whether its men were among the dead.

On Thursday, Hamas’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar said he hoped to see a mass breach of the Israeli border during Monday’s protests timed to coincide with the US embassy’s move to Jerusalem.

For Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza and seeks Israel’s destruction, Monday’s border protest was the culmination of a weeks-long campaign to try to break the blockade on the territory. Israel says the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring weaponry and attacking the Jewish state.

Monday’s demonstrations also protested the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, viewed as a major provocation by the Palestinians and the Arab world. Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Hamas has said protests would continue in a weekly format, but it was not clear if it would be able to maintain momentum during the fasting month of Ramadan, which begins this week.

Israel has reportedly warned Hamas that it will resume assassinations of the terror group’s leaders if Hamas continues to organize clashes on the Gaza border. The terror group, meanwhile, vowed revenge after Monday’s deadly riots.

“If the protests continue, the assassinations will return,” Hadashot TV news quoted security officials as saying in a message sent to Hamas via Egypt.

The reported warning came as Hamas escalated its own threats of violence.

“We say clearly today to all the world that the peaceful march of our people lured the enemy into shedding more blood,” said Khalil al-Hayya, a senior leader in Hamas.

He added that Hamas’s armed wing and other terror groups “will not prolong their silence over the crimes of the occupation.”

The threat came after the bloodiest day yet of the weeks-long violent “March of Return” protest against Israel — and the deadliest day in the Strip since the 2014 war — with Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry saying 52 Palestinians were killed and more than 2,000 wounded in the violence.

Citing Hamas sources, Hadashot TV news said 10 of the terror group’s members were killed in the clashes, including a son of its co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi.

The Israel Defense Forces called the clashes “unprecedented,” compared to past weeks.

“This is unprecedented in terms of the level of violence, compared to previous weeks,” said spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, citing three attempted attacks by armed men against Israeli forces during the riots as the main proof of the riots’ ferocity.

Amid international criticism over the army’s handling of the clashes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Israel “will continue to act with determination to defend our sovereignty and our citizens.”

“Every country has the obligation to protect its borders. The Hamas terrorist organization declares its intentions to destroy Israel and sends thousands to break through the border fence for that purpose,” he said, ahead of an emergency meeting of the security cabinet on Gaza Monday night.

However, despite the fierceness of the clashes, the IDF spokesperson, Manelis, said Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, appeared to have failed to bring out protesters in sufficient numbers to be considered a political victory.

Hamas, and the IDF, anticipated that over 100,000 people would participate in Monday’s demonstrations along the border fence. But ultimately, the army calculated that 40,000 people took part, though Manelis acknowledged the final tally may be higher.

Manelis said Hamas attempted to convince and pressure Palestinians to come to the border protests, tried to bribe them by offering “$100 per family that comes,” and threatened people by accusing them of being “collaborators” if they did not attend the protests.

Despite those efforts, Manelis said, “Hamas failed.”

Military officials said they were prepared for the protests to last into the night. Soldiers on the border, for instance, were outfitted with night-vision equipment, and the military was ready to use flares to illuminate the area.

However, as of 6:30 p.m., it appeared that the protesters were clearing the border area for the night, and, according to unconfirmed reports, the organizers were calling the demonstrators away from the border.

Manelis said the IDF was expecting protests to continue on Tuesday and potentially for several additional days.

In response to the three attacks, the Israeli army destroyed a number of Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip. Fighter jets also destroyed five Hamas targets in the northern Gaza Strip, and Israeli tanks and aircraft struck two more, the army said.

Additionally, according to the IDF, protesters hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops on the other side of the border fence. Demonstrators launched dozens of so-called “terror kites” — kites laden with containers of burning fuel — into Israeli territory, sparking brush fires in open fields and farm lands across the region.

Manelis said that there were also multiple attempts to rush the border — none of them successful — and that the army has intelligence indicating Hamas and other terrorist groups have plans to try to kidnap or kill Israeli soldiers serving on the fence. The IDF’s spokesman said Hamas deployed 12 separate terrorist “cells” to try to breach the border at different locations, and that all were rebuffed.

The protests came as part of the weeks-long March of Return coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding, which the Palestinians refer to as the Nakba, or “catastrophe.” Monday’s protests were also timed to coincide with the opening ceremony for the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.

Turkey recalls ambassadors to Israel, US over Gaza ‘genocide’

‘Israel is a terrorist state,’ Erdogan says of response to Hamas-led riots on border; Foreign Ministry says it has not received official notice

Turkey on Monday recalled its ambassadors to Israel and the United States in protest of the Israeli military’s deadly response to riots on the Gaza border.

The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag, who also declared three days of mourning over the 55 Palestinians the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said were killed in the riots.

“Israel is wreaking state terror. Israel is a terror state,” Erdogan told Turkish students in London in a speech broadcast by state television. “What Israel has done is a genocide. I condemn this humanitarian drama, the genocide, from whichever side it comes, Israel or America.

“We will continue to stand with Palestinian people with determination,” he added.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said Jerusalem was aware of reports on Turkey’s intention to recall its ambassador but had not received an official notice.

Turkey’s announcement came after South Africa announced the immediate recall of its ambassador to Israel in protest of the Gaza deaths.

Monday’s clashes, the deadliest yet in the weeks-long violent “March of Return” protests, came the same day the US inaugurated its new embassy in Jerusalem.

Citing Hamas sources, Hadashot TV news said 10 of the terror group’s members were killed in the clashes, including a son of its co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi. The IDF’s spokesman said Hamas deployed 12 separate terrorist “cells” to try to breach the border at different locations, and that all were rebuffed.

Erdogan, whom Israel has accused of providing aid to Hamas, the terror group that runs Gaza and backs the protests, said, “We will not allow today to be the day Muslim world loses Jerusalem.”

The Turkish president has positioned himself as a defender of the Palestinians and harshly criticized the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and its relocation of its embassy to the city, saying earlier that the move was a violation of international law.

Turkey’s decision to recall its envoys to Israel and the US came as thousands gathered in Ankara to condemn the US embassy relocation, burning American and Israeli flags, and protesting the deadly clashes along the Israel-Gaza border.

Demonstrators carried banners that read: “Al Quds belongs to the Muslims,” the Arabic name of Jerusalem. They chanted “God is great” and slogans calling for holy war and martyrdom. One speaker called Americans “dogs” as people shouted “Jerusalem is ours, it will be ours.”

The rally was called by pro-Islamic Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or IHH, which Israel lists as a terror group.

In 2010, 10 Turks were killed in a melee after they attacked IDF troops who boarded an IHH-organized Gaza blockade-busting ship.

The raid led to a souring of ties between the two countries, once close economic and security partners. Diplomatic ties were fully restored when Ankara returned its envoy to Israel in December 2016, though they have remained frosty since.

Hamas vows to respond to Israeli ‘bloodshed,’ slams US for embassy move

Hamas held a press conference Monday evening following the deadly clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian protesters along the Gaza border, vowing to retaliate soon.

“The protests of our people have tempted the enemy to cause more bloodshed,” the terrorist group said, adding that its members “won’t wait long” before delivering a response.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 52 protesters were killed and more than 2,000 injured in Monday’s clashes as about 50,000 Palestinians were protesting near the security fence, some of whom tried to cross it into Israel.

Hamas also blamed the US administration for sparking the violence with its “criminal” recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the relocation of its embassy there.

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas said the PA is currently considering its response to the relocation of the US embassy earlier today. “We will convene an emergency meeting where we will discuss these issues,” he said, thanking world leaders who opposed US President Donald Trump’s decision.

Hamas calls for intifada in response to Gaza deaths

Hamas called for an uprising on Monday night after violent clashes on the Gaza border resulted in a high death toll.

“The natural reaction to the death of people who were protesting peacefully should be with an Arab and Islamic intifada (uprising),” said Khalil al-Hayya, the deputy Hamas leader. “The Palestinian response must be clear in Gaza and in the West Bank. There is no other choice but to light the fire in Gaza and in the West Bank in response to what happened.”

“Hamas is monitoring the marches and stands as a shield for them,” he added.

About 40,000 Palestinians have gathered near the fence in 13 hot spots along the border since the morning hours. Several thousand others were located in the tent area about half a kilometer from the fence. At 5:30pm, Hamas ordered all those present in the border area to return home.

At least 52 Palestinians were killed from IDF fire on the Gaza border, with over 1,200 suffering gunshot wounds and 1,200 others suffering other injuries. This is the highest Palestinian death toll since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who held security consultations on Monday evening in light of the clashes on the Gaza border, said Israel was acting in self-defense.

“Every country has an obligation to defend its borders,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter. “The Hamas terrorist organization declares it intends to destroy Israel and sends thousands to breach the border fence in order to achieve this goal. We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and citizens.”

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman also held consultations on Monday evening with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, instructing him “to continue acting with determination to prevent any attempt to undermine Israeli sovereignty and Israeli citizens, in accordance with the policy outlined.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, meanwhile, called the new US embassy, which was opened in Jerusalem on Monday, “a US settlement outpost,” saying the Palestinians would reject any American mediation in peace talks with Israel and demand at least two different international mediators.

“We received Trump’s peace plan; the Americans removed the issue of refugees and Jerusalem from the negotiations. We won’t accept this deal and we don’t want to hear from the United States anymore,” he said.

28 rioters dead, 500 wounded as clashes on Gaza border heat up

May 14, 2018

Watch: Riots break out on Gaza border ahead of US embassy move. 28 rioters killed, 500 wounded, bringing total to 70 dead since riots began.

Twenty-eight Arab rioters were killed and roughly 500 more were wounded Monday after clashes erupted along the Gaza-Israel border ahead of the opening ceremony for the new US embassy in Jerusalem, Fox News reported.

Rioters threw stones and burning tires at Israeli soldiers stationed along the border to prevent infiltrations into Israeli territory.

Israeli security personnel opened fire on stone-throwers and rioters who approached the Israeli security fence. According to Gaza health officials, 25 rioters were killed and some 500 more wounded during the riots Monday.

One rioter, identified by Gaza health officials as 21-year-old Anas Qudeih, was shot and killed during clashes east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Gaza officials later said that 24 more rioters had died

More than 10,000 Gazans have already gathered at sites along the border, but Israeli security officials expect those numbers to swell as the US embassy unveiling ceremony approaches. The ceremony is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. Jerusalem time.

Seventy-nine Gaza rioters have been killed since the beginning of the riots, dubbed the “March of Return”, on March 30th. The mass-demonstrations kicked off six weeks of violent clashes along the Israel-Gaza border, culminating in a massive “Nakba Day”.

Nakba, Arabic for “disaster”, is the term used by Hamas and other anti-Israel groups in the Palestinian Authority and Gaza in reference to the anniversary of Israel’s establishment. Monday marks the 70th anniversary on the Gregorian calendar of the establishment of the State of Israel.

Hamas leaders have called on the rioters to break through Israel’s security fence along the Gaza border and infiltrate into Israeli territory en masse.

IDF: Hamas planning Monday ‘massacre’ of Israelis, over 100,000 rioters expected

May 14, 2018

The IDF issued a stark warning about the culmination of the Hamas terror group’s “March of Return,” which is arriving a day earlier than planned.

In anticipation of violence and mayhem planned by the Hamas terror group to coincide with the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, the IDF projected that the number of Palestinian rioters on Monday could reach 100,000, with hundreds potentially attempting to breach the border fence and attack nearby towns within Israel.

The IDF’s warnings included reference to the potential for an attempted “massacre” of Israeli civilians, as the Palestinian street prepares for the unbridled rioting that generally accompanies “Nakba Day” on May 15, which is the Palestinians’ version of Israel’s Independence Day, invoking the Arabic word for catastrophe.

Military intelligence indicates, however, that Hamas won’t wait the extra day and will instead push up the violence to May 14 to coincide with Monday’s US Embassy move in an attempt to attract more international attention.

The Israeli military and police are prepared for a number of scenarios, including chaotic attacks staged by groups of rioters breaking through the security barrier, mass arson and property damage, and direct armed attacks on troops by Hamas commandos. The IDF is also on guard against attempts to kidnap soldiers.

In the video below, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit warns that Hamas seeks to “torch farmland,” as it has already done with arson kites in recent days, and murder “innocent men, women, and children.”

“The IDF’s preparation includes the additional deployment of a number of combat battalions to the Gaza border, special forces, intelligence collection units, and snipers. In addition, the Central Command will also receive additional combat battalions and intelligence collection teams as reinforcement,” announced the army on Sunday. To that end, additional troops were deployed to Israeli communities close to the Gaza border.

It has been suggested that Hamas seeks sufficient violence to distract Gazans from the terror group’s utter failure to effectively govern the coastal enclave, while avoiding full-blown war with Israel, which would be disastrous for Hamas.

In recent weeks, for instance, Hamas has directed rioters to not only destroy Israeli property, but has also ordered the destruction of humanitarian infrastructure, such as the Kerem Shalom crossing (through which medical supplies enter Gaza) and major gas pipelines running into the Strip.

Hamas’ health ministry claims that about 50 Palestinians have been killed during the riots, with Israel identifying a significant number of the casualties as Hamas operatives.
