President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made history on Wednesday as the first First Couple to travel together to meet the troops in Iraq war zone.

President Trump fired up the troops at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.

President defended his decision to remove troops in Syria and said the US can use its base in Iraq to hit the terrorists.

President Trump took time meeting the troops and also signed at least one Make America Great Again hat at the Iraqi base.

One soldier told the Commander in Chief, “I cam back into the military because of you.”

President Trump responded, “And I am here because of you.”

Netanyahu denies Israel behind overnight airstrikes in Syria

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel wasn’t behind reported airstrikes in Syria on Tuesday night.

“I had nothing to do with it,” was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s abrupt answer when he was congratulated for “the liquidation of Hezbollah members” during a meeting on Wednesday.

Newsweek reported on Tuesday that a number of Hezbollah leaders were targeted in an Israeli airstrike as they were boarding a plane to Iran in Syria’s capital of Damascus.

The magazine also reported that several “Iranian ammunition supply points” were bombed, which contained the most sophisticated, precision-guided ammunition available to Iran’s army and Hezbollah.

Newsweek received its information from a source in the U.S. defense department, who it said had “access to the information from Israeli senior military officers with direct knowledge of the attack.”

Israel’s Channel 12 website Mako reported more details of the attack based on Syrian reports. It listed the targets as an air base in Al-Dimas, west of Damascus, used by Hezbollah, a base of the 4th Division of the Syrian Army in Sabura in the north of the country, and the 10th Division Command in the city of Qatana in the south.

Other targets were also listed.

“Our air defenses confronted hostile missiles launched by Israeli war planes from above the Lebanese territories and downed most of them before reaching their targets,” a Syrian military source said, according to Newsweek.

On Tuesday evening, an Israeli Army spokesman said Israeli air defenses were activated against a missile fired from Syria. No damage or casualties on Israel’s side were reported. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) released a video showing missiles fired by Syrian air defenses from the area around Damascus.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed later Tuesday that Israel’s attacks in Syria put two civilian flights in danger, as reported by Israel’s Ynet news site.

A Russian Defense Ministry spokesman called it “a provocative act by the Israeli Air Force that directly endangered two passenger planes.”

The Russian spokesman said six Israeli F-16s carried out the attack from Lebanese territory, Ynetreports.

Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Russian Defense Ministry said Syrian air defenses destroyed 14 of 16 missiles launched by Israel.

The attack comes a week after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a pullout of U.S. troops in Syria. Netanyahu said following that announcement that, “We will continue to act to prevent Iran’s effort to militarily entrench itself in Syria, and if needed we will even increase our activities there.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu broadly hinted at Israeli responsibility for air attacks against Iranian targets near Damascus, telling Air Force cadets on Wednesday that Israel is acting against Iranian entrenchment in Syria “continuously and with firmness, including during these days.”

“Protecting the homeland begins by cutting down big threats when they are small,” he said. “We are not willing to accept an Iranian entrenchment in Syria that is directed against us.”

Netanyahu said that Israel would not be deterred from taking the actions it feels necessary to defend itself, adding that US President Donald Trump’s decision to remove American troops from Syria “does not change our policies – we will maintain our red lines in Syria and everywhere else.”

Speaking at a graduation course for new pilots at the Hatzerim Air Force Base, Netanyahu noted that he recently visited the plants of the Israel Aerospace Industries saw the development of “special capabilities that no other country in the region has, and some of which which – I am telling you – no other country in the world has. “

This, he said, includes, “weapons systems, defensive systems, and attack missiles that can reach everywhere and every target.”

Netanyahu said that there has never been air activity in the history of the Middle East like there is now. “Aircraft go up and come down,  take off and land, and reach arenas both near and far – very far.” He did not elaborate.

Netanyahu said that as part of Israel’s effort to thwart threats against it,  “Operation Northern Shield” to destroy hezbollah attack tunnels is continuing.

“We are destroying Hezbollah’s terror tunnels one after the other,” he said. “They thought to create a weapon of destruction to be used against us, but we defeat them with trickery, daring and determination.”

During his address to the fresh crop of IAF pilots, Netanyahu also hails Israel’s weapons industries, and says it is producing missiles that can strike “anywhere” in the world. He also brags of Israeli military activity in “very far” arenas, without elaborating.

“A few days ago, I visited the manufacturing facilities of Israel Aerospace Industries,” he says. “They’re developing unique capabilities possessed by no other country in the Middle East, and I can tell you that some of them aren’t possessed by any other country in the world.

“These include weapons systems, defense systems, offensive missiles that can strike anywhere and any target,” Netanyahu adds.

He says the extent of the Israeli Air Force’s recent activity is “unprecedented in the history of the Middle East.

“Aircraft are going up and down, taking off and landing, and going to nearby arenas as well as far away arena, very very away,” Netanyahu, who is also the defense minister, adds cryptically.

German parliamentary report: Turkey has already invaded Syria – Al Arabiya English

The report, prepared by the parliament’s Research Services at the request of the German Left Party (Die Linke), examined Turkey’s military presence in northern Syria.

Turkey currently controls a large swathe of territory in northwestern Syria consisting of Al-Bab and the border cities of Jarablus and Azaz, captured from the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Euphrates Shield operation launched in August 2016.

Turkey also seized control of the northwestern province of Afrin this year, formerly controlled by the Kurdish People Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey sees as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), an armed group which has been fighting inside Turkey since 1984.

“When Turkey’s military presence in Afrin, Azaz, Al-Bab, and Jarablus regions in northern Syria is examined, it is seen that it fulfils the criteria of an invasion set in international law,” the report said.

Sevim Dagdelen, deputy chairman of the Left party in the German Bundestag, criticized the German government for declining to evaluate Turkey’s military activities in Syria as a violation of international law.

“It is a scandal that as a NATO ally Turkey entered into some territories in Syria and its invasion is not being recognized as a violation of international law, despite all expert reports and despite all parties’ stance,” she said.

Abbas: Palestinians ready to enter peace process based on UN resolutions

PA president makes comment after pope says he hopes Israelis and Palestinians will renew dialogue; Israeli official says Jewish state has repeatedly declared willingness to talk

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said late Tuesday that the Ramallah-based Palestinian leadership is prepared to enter a peace process based on international law and United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, the official PA news site Wafa reported.

Abbas made the comments hours after Pope Francis said in a Christmas message he hoped Israelis and Palestinians would “resume dialogue and undertake a journey of peace that can put an end to a conflict that for over 70 years has rent the land chosen by the Lord to show his face of love.”

Since shortly after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017 and initiated the relocation of the US embassy in the Jewish state to the city, Abbas declared the Palestinians will no longer work with an American-dominated peace process and called for the establishment of a multilateral mechanism for it.

In the past year, he has invited a number of countries around the world to take part in a multilateral mechanism for the peace process.

Asked about the pope’s comments, an Israeli government official, who requested anonymity, said in a phone call: “Israel has repeatedly expressed its readiness to enter a diplomatic process with the Palestinians without preconditions.”

The last round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which were sponsored by the US, collapsed in May 2014.

In late November, Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, said Abbas was willing to meet Netanyahu anywhere in the world.

“I officially challenge Mr. Netanyahu [to meet Abbas]. He can choose any country, any country on Earth. Moscow, Beijing, London, Berlin,” Erekat told the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. “He will meet him. This is a challenge, a declared challenge.”

In early December, a PLO official, who requested anonymity, clarified that Erekat had meant to say Abbas was willing to meet Netanyahu anywhere other than Washington, DC.

“We will not participate in a meeting sponsored by the Trump administration,” the official said in a phone call.

Both Abbas and Netanyahu have frequently declared their readiness to meet, but have not held formal talks in several years.

The last known encounter between Abbas and Netanyahu was at the funeral of former prime minister Shimon Peres in September 2016, where the two briefly exchanged pleasantries.

The last time Abbas and Netanyahu met formally for negotiations was in September 2010 in Jerusalem.

Many officials in Trump’s administration have said the US intends to publish a plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Netanyahu has said he will look at the apparently forthcoming peace plan with an “open mind,” while Abbas has vowed not to consider any US proposal.

In the past year, while protesting PA payments to terrorists, security prisoners and their families, and criticizing the operations and criteria of the UN’s Palestinian welfare agency UNRWA, the Trump administration has infuriated the Palestinians by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, moving the US embassy in the Jewish state to Jerusalem, cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the Palestinians, and closing the PLO representative office in Washington.

Russia: ‘Provocative’ Israeli strikes in Syria endangered 2 civilian flights

Moscow slams ‘gross violation of the sovereignty of Syria,’ claims Damascus’s air defenses intercepted 14 of 16 missiles launched by IAF jets during nighttime raid

Russia on Wednesday accused Israel of endangering two civilian flights during airstrikes near an airport in Syria on Tuesday night, calling it a “provocative act” and a violation of Syrian sovereignty.

According to Syrian state media, the strikes began at about 10 p.m. and were carried out by Israel from Lebanon. It said Syria’s air defenses had opened fire on “enemy targets,” shooting them down.

“We are very concerned by the attacks and how they were made. This is a gross violation of the sovereignty of Syria,” the Russian ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

The Russian defense ministry said earlier that two non-Russian passenger planes had been landing at the time of the strike — one in Damascus and the other in Beirut. The Syrian military didn’t fully deploy its defense systems as this could risk the safety of the flights, it added.

The defense ministry also said Syria’s air defenses successfully downed 14 of 16 guided missiles fired during the air raid, adding that six Israeli F-16 jets had taken part in the operation.

“Provocative acts by the Israeli Air Force endangered two passenger jets when six of their F-16s carried out airstrikes on Syria from Lebanese airspace,” ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told reporters, according to Russia Today.

The ministry said three Syrian troops were injured in the raid, confirming a number cited earlier by Syrian TV, which also said that weapons warehouses were hit.

Ties with Moscow took a hit in September when a Russian military plane was downed by Syrian air defenses during an Israeli attack on Latakia, killing all 15 servicemen aboard. Russia blamed the Israeli military for that incident — a charge rejected by Jerusalem — and has supplied Syria with the advanced S-300 air defense system.

The S-300 systems were delivered to Syria last month, but they are not yet believed to be in use, as the Syrian air defense teams still need to be trained to operate them.

Israeli defense officials have met with Russian counterparts a number of times in recent weeks in an effort to re-establish a deconfliction mechanism that will allow Israel to recommence its air campaign.

Russia reportedly wants significant warning period ahead of any Israeli airstrike, which Israeli officials have been said to refuse.

Newsweek reported Wednesday morning that the alleged Israeli airstrike hit several senior Hezbollah officials as they boarded a plane bound for Iran, citing a US Defense Department source.

The unnamed source told the magazine he had received the information from top Israeli military brass.

He said strategic Iranian munitions were also targeted, including advanced GPS components for weaponry.

However, that report was later denied by Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen, widely regarded as pro-Hezbollah, which said no senior members of the terror group were hurt.

Syrian eyewitnesses and video on social media showed what appeared to be intense fire on targets near the capital.

In addition, Syrian air defenses in Attal and the 68th Brigade and 137th Battalion in Khan-al-Sheikh were also reportedly attacked, Hadashot reported.

Israel said it had deployed air defenses against a missile fired from Syria as Damascus attempted to repel the alleged airstrikes.

The Israel Defense Forces said there was no damage or injuries from the surface-to-air missile fired from Syria at Israel.

“An IDF aerial defense system activated in response to an anti-aircraft missile launched from Syria,” the army said in a statement.

It did not say where or even if the missile was successfully intercepted.

Israel in recent years has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria against targets linked to Iran, which alongside its proxies and Russia is fighting on behalf of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Israel has accused Iran of seeking to establish a military presence in Syria that could threaten Israeli security and attempting to transfer advanced weaponry to the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.
