The nuclear option to stop the nuclear Iran?

The nuclear option to stop the nuclear Iran? Power LineSteven Hayward, September 16, 2015

No, I’m not talking about using nuclear weapons to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons, though I have several times over the last few years heard from very knowledgeable and well-placed people in the defense and foreign policy community that if it comes down to Israel having to defend itself alone against the imminent deployment of Iranian nukes they might have to resort to using their nuclear capacities to stop it, because they lack our conventional capacity to penetrate Iran’s hardened nuclear facilities. It would be an awful moment for the world as well as Israel itself, but it serves as a prompt to ponder the consequences of Obama’s obvious decision to take U.S. military action off the table.

Rather, I’m speaking of using the so-called “nuclear option” in the Senate to abolish the filibuster for a vote on the disapproval of this terrible agreement, which right now Senate Democrats will block with a filibuster so they don’t have to go on record with a vote, and so Obama won’t have to cast an unpopular veto. With polls showing that public support for the Iran agreement is as low as 21 percent, Senate Republicans can quote Harry Reid’s arguments for invoking the “nuclear option” for confirming judges last session: surely having the Senate cast a vote on this treaty is way more important than confirming judges? Make Obama veto the bill disapproving the deal, and make Senate Democrats vote against overriding the veto.

If the Senate GOP took this step, it would go a long way toward showing the conservative grassroots that they can indeed stand up to Obama and the Democrats on the Hill. Plus they’d be reasserting their constitutional duty to render “advice and consent” on treaties, even if Obama has evaded this constitutional requirement by calling it an “executive agreement.”

Is Netanyahu finally getting serious about tackling Palestinian terrorism?

Is Netanyahu finally getting serious about tackling Palestinian terrorism? | Anne’s Opinions, September 16th 2015

(The Palestinians’ “low-level violence” is anything but. Israelis have been killed and Israeli sovereignty is being undermined in Jerusalem and in the holiest of Jewish sites: on the Temple Mount and the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives. The Israeli government’s response has so far been limp to say the least – unless it is harassing Jewish Israelis. But maybe the tide has turned. — anneinpt))

The low-level Palestinian terrorism that has been plaguing Israelis for years, particularly firebombings, shootings and stonings have been documented on this blog and elsewhere innumerable times; similarly the ongoing destruction – under the guise of “youthful vandalism” – of the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives, as well as attacking Jewish visitors to the cemetery. This terrorism has been gradually ramping up, and it was obvious to all that the longer no serious Israeli response was forthcoming, the more serious the situation was set to be.

Alexander Levlovitz Hy’d

On Rosh Hashana eve, another Israeli fell victim to Palestinian rock throwing: Alexander Levlovitz of Mevasseret was killed as he drove in East Talpiot, Jerusalem:

Police identified the Israeli man killed late Sunday night in a rock-throwing attack in Jerusalem as Alexander Levlovitz, 64.

Levlovitz died of his injuries in the early hours of Monday morning after he lost control of his car when it came under attack by assailants hurling stones; he drove into a ditch and hit a pole, initially sustaining serious wounds. Police were investigating whether Levlovitz suffered cardiac arrest when his car crashed.

Two other people travelling in the car were lightly injured in the incident in the East Talpiot neighborhood of southeast Jerusalem. The three were returning from an event celebrating the Jewish New Year.

Unknown assailants believed to be Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem reportedly attacked the car with stones. The assailants, allegedly from the nearby Palestinian village of Sur Bacher, also attacked other cars on East Talpiot’s Asher Winer street, Channel 2 reported.

“The driver who was involved in an accident, apparently as a result of stone-throwing… died at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital,” police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.

This attack might have been prevented if the police – at the government’s behest – would have taken a firmer hand against the perpetrators. Finally, much too late, the politicians appear to be waking up to the threat. President Rivlin called for firm action against terror following this stoning attack plus several days of rioting on the Temple Mount (more on that to follow), and he was joined in his call by politicians from both Left and Right.

Netanyahu too finally sprang into action, summoning an emergency meeting at his office at the close of Rosh Hashana to discuss ways to combat the growing terror threat:

At an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office late Tuesday to discuss measures to curb an increasing trend of Palestinians using homemade weapons against Israelis, Netanyahu said that stone-throwers would face harsher penalties in the future.

“I take the throwing of stones or firebombs against Israelis very seriously, and I intend to fight this phenomenon by any means necessary, including the use of implementing stricter sentences and enforcement,” he said.

The meeting was attended by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein and senior security officials.

The committee would submit its recommendations within a week, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Netanyahu also ordered the Israel Police and state prosecution to form a separate committee to examine ways to deter such attacks by increasing the severity of penalties and sentences.

The committee was specifically tasked by the prime minister with determining the efficacy of measures such as imposing high minimum sentences, and instituting steep fines on minors and their parents who participate in rock-throwing attacks.

Ahead of the meeting, Netanyahu vowed to use “any means necessary” to curb stoning-throwing attacks against Israelis and ongoing violence on the Temple Mount, which on Tuesday saw Palestinians clashing with Israeli police for a third consecutive day.

The emergency meeting came after three days of violent clashes on the Temple Mount and a rock-throwing attack that led to a fatal car crash in Jerusalem Sunday night, killing the driver, Alexander Levlovitz.

May the family of Alexander Levlovitz Hy’d be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may his memory be for a blessing.

In recent weeks we have seen how the uncontested Arab “vandalism” – in actual fact antisemitic acts of the basest sort – in the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives has reached heights never seen since its partial destruction by the Jordanians in 1948. Graves were smashed and trees set on fire in the latest bout.

Smashed Jewish gravestones on the Mt. of Olives cemetery

Returning to the recent violence on the Temple Mount, Palestinian anti-Jewish violence in the Old City of Jerusalem and its environs has also been growing apace, partly because of a limp police response to the Palestinians’ violence combined with an unfairly firm hand against the Jewish victims.

Temple Mount screamers – Muslim harassers of Jewish visitors

One of the worst manifestations of Muslim supremacy has been the “Temple Mount screamers” who have been hired and are paid by radical Muslim organizations specifically to hound and harass Jews and others who wish to visit and pray at their holiest site. Up till this week they have been aided and abetted appeased by the Israeli police who simply want a quiet life and find it easier to chase the Jews away rather than confront the Muslim stalkers.

But finally the Israeli government has woken up, maybe after being embarrassed by a visiting US Congressman being harassed by these “screamers” – or maybe just by mounting furious domestic public opinion. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon has now outlawed the Murabitun’ and ‘Murabitat:

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon signed an order Wednesday declaring the groups of Islamists who regularly harass Jews on the Temple Mount – the male “Murabitun” and female “Murabitat” – as illegal organizations.

The activists regularly riot on the Mount, curse, shout, and throw various objects at the Jews who ascend the Mount, and sometimes attack police as well.

Yaalon signed the order upon the recommendation of the Israel Security Agency and the Israel Police, after he became convinced that it was necessary for preserving the public peace and security of the nation.

“The activity of the Murabitun and Murabitat is a central element in creating the tension and violence on the Temple Mount in particular and in Jerusalem in general,” said a statement issued by Yaalon’s bureau. “This is dangerous and inciting activity against tourists, visitors and worshipers at the site, that leads to violence and could cause loss of life.”

Boker tov Eliyahu. Where has Yaalon been hiding up until now?!

The declaration was signed after it received the approval of the Attorney General, and it means that anyone participating in Murabitun/Murabitat activities, organizing or funding it, is carrying out a crime and is likely to face prosecution.

I’d like to see that happen in real life. In practice I’m willing to bet we’ll never see a prosecution but I would be delighted to be proven wrong. I’ll be happy to see one or two of them arrested. (Not holding my breath).

Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan (Likud) sent Ya’alon letter last month, asking him to urgently declare the Arab organizations that create mayhem on the Temple Mount as illegal, so that security forces will have a freer hand against the rioters.

Erdan had been carrying out behind-the-scenes staff work, together with police, the Israel Security Agency (ISA, or Shin Bet), the State Attorney’s Office and even the Attorney General, who agreed to help advance the declaration.

In the discussions of the problem, Erdan was shown evidence that the Murabitun and Murabitat are directed by the northern arm of the Islamic Movement in Israel.

The purpose of their activity is to destabilize the status quo on the Temple Mount, and they have succeeded in creating escalation on the Mount, and in making the security situation there untenable.

Kol hakavod to Gilad Erdan, one of the few effective Israeli politicians in office today.

Miriam Elman at Legal Insurrection has produced an admirably thorough backgrounder to the “Screamers” – their financing and backing, their provocations and harassments, and their aim of denying the centrality of Jerusalem to the Jews. It’s outrageous and depressing reading. Read it all at the link.

As to what triggered the violence over Rosh Hashana, it all started when Israel hit back. Or rather, when the Israeli police discovered a stash of pipe bombs hidden by Palestinians on the Temple Mount, ready to be used against Jewish worshippers on Rosh Hashana:

Israeli police on Sunday discovered pipe bombs during what they said was a preemptive operation at Jerusalem’s flashpoint Temple Mount, prompting one senior minister to warn that Israel would review measures at the site, which is holy to both Jew and Muslims.

The Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Egypt condemned the Israeli government for the incident.

Yes, of course, because it’s always the police’s fault for discovering a crime, rather than the fault of the criminal.

Police said it approached the compound to prevent an attempt to disrupt Jewish visits to the site.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan warned that the discovery of the pipe bombs “forces us to reconsider the arrangements for the Temple Mount.

“It is unacceptable that Muslim rioters who barricaded themselves during the night on the Temple Mount can, at will, turn this holy site into a battlefield, including throwing stones, shooting firecrackers directly at security forces, and even bringing explosive devices into the area of the mount,” he said.

According to police, the intention of the demonstrators was to upset the movements of Jewish visitors in the compound ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, which began Sunday evening and marks the Jewish new year.

“Masked protesters who were inside the mosque threw stones and fireworks at police,” a police statement said. “Suspicious pipes that could be filled with homemade explosives were also found at the entry to the mosque.”

Police later confirmed that the objects were pipe bombs.

Once again, I don’t understand why it has taken the police or the political echelon so long to react. These Palestinian attacks with pipe bombs, stones and other weapons against Jews have been taking place for years.

In another recent anti-Jewish attack in Jerusalem, a Jewish worshipper was chased through the alleyways of the Old City:

Here is what the Muslims’ “third-holiest site” looks like from the inside:

The humour in the Sussex Friends of Israel’s cheeky comment disguises what is an important point: the Muslims lost all right to any claim to “holiness” just by the way they treat the Temple Mount as anything BUT a place of worship. To them it is simply yet another place from which to uproot Israel and its Jewish historical connection to the site.

The chutzpah of the EU, the UN and (incredibly) the US in urging “restraint” is once again beyond belief. Let them address their calls for restraint to the Muslims – to their Iranian backers, the Muslim Brotherhood financiers, and their Palestinian perpetrators.

Meanwhile let us hope that with the start of the New Year, the Israeli government will mark a new beginning and show us that it is finally getting serious about confronting this growing menace of Palestinian terrorism in Jerusalem, which threatens not only lives but our very sovereignty in our capital city.

Islamic State has designs on the holy cities of Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and endangers Europe and Russia, Vladimir Putin said. Moscow is concerned about IS-trained jihadists returning to EU countries, the CIS and Russia.

The situation is very serious, Putin said, adding that Moscow is very worried that IS terrorists are publicly announcing their designs on Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The jihadists also plan to spread their activities to Europe, Russia, central and southeastern Asia.

“Extremists from many countries of the world, including, unfortunately, European counties, Russia and the  Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) undertake ideological and military training in the ranks of Islamic State [IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL],” said Putin, speaking at the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit in Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe. “And certainly we are worried that they could possibly return.”

Putin said it’s necessary for geopolitical ambitions to be set aside in the fight against IS terrorists.

“Simple common sense, responsibility for global and regional safety require uniting efforts of the international community [to fight] such a threat. It is necessary to set aside geopolitical ambitions, drop so-called double standards, the policy of direct or indirect use of separate terrorist groups for achieving own goals, including removing the governments and regimes.”

Russia is supporting the Syrian government in its fight against terrorism and will continue its support, Putin said.

“We give technical-military support to Damascus and will continue doing it,” he said. “And we call on other countries to join us in this.”

Both Bashar Assad’s government and the opposition forces should unite to battle the jihadists, Putin stressed.

“Now we have to unite the efforts of the Syrian government and the Kurdish self-defense forces and the so-called moderate opposition, and other countries in the [Middle East] region to fight the threat to Syria’s statehood and terrorism.”

Russia is calling for uniting the efforts of all forces eager to fight terrorism, said the Russian leader.

“Russia, as you know, has proposed to form a wide coalition to fight extremists without any delay. It [the coalition] should unite everyone who is ready and is already contributing to tackling terrorism.”

The activities of the IS jihadist group go beyond Iraq and Syria. The Russian president mentioned that the militants’ influence is also spreading in another war-torn country in the region – Afghanistan.

“Unfortunately the situation in the country [Afghanistan] is degrading after the withdrawal of most foreign troops,” Putin said, adding there is a real threat that terror groups from neighboring countries may infiltrate the area.

Putin once again dismissed the accusations against Russia claiming the recent influx of refugees in EU countries was allegedly prompted by Moscow supporting the legitimate government of Syria.

“People are fleeing Syria, first of all, because of military actions … from atrocities of terrorists – we know they are committing brutalities there, and destroying cultural heritage.

“If Russia had not been supporting Syria, the situation in the country would have been worse than in Libya and the refugee flow would have been even bigger,” Putin said.

He added that it was not Russia who destabilized the situation in such countries as Libya, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan and other regions of the world.

“It was not us who destroyed government institutions there creating the power vacuum, which is immediately filled by terrorists,” he concluded.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Russia next week to speak with President Vladimir Putin about the deployment of Moscow’s forces to Syria and the threats to Israel caused by weapon deliveries to Damascus, his office said Wednesday.

Netanyahu will discuss the dangers Israel faces if Hezbollah and other terror groups obtain Russian advanced weapons shipments, according to a government press release.

Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the meeting was to to take place on Monday, Sputnik News reported.

Israel opposes Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, but has mostly sought to avoid being dragged into the conflict in neighboring Syria.

Russia has recently stepped up military aid to Damascus, despite protestations from the US and elsewhere.

Moscow has been one of Syria’s staunchest backers throughout the civil war, along with Iran and Tehran’s Lebanese proxy terror group Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah, with which Israel fought a devastating 2006 war, is a staunch ally of Assad and has sent fighters to support his forces.

A number of airstrikes inside Syria attributed to Israel over the past several years were apparently aimed at keeping advanced weaponry from being transferred to Hezbollah.

Israel has also expressed fears that the nuclear deal reached between six world powers, including Russia, and Iran could see money freed up as sanctions are lifted flowing to Hezbollah and other terror groups.

Israeli security officials said last week that Iran and Russia had sent troops to Syria to support Assad’s regime, according to Channel 2.

Relations between Israel and Russia have been negatively affected by Moscow’s willingness to sell military equipment to Iran, which has said it seeks to destroy the Jewish state.

Netanyahu last traveled to Moscow in 2013 to lobby Putin to cancel the sale of the advanced S-300 air defense system to Iran, though that effort failed.

The US has also expressed its concern to Russia regarding an alleged recent increase in military buildup in Syria, including apparent moves to set up an airbase near Latakia, an Assad stronghold near where Russia once maintained a naval base.

Moscow, however, denied the reports as false and said its aid to the Syrian government was nothing out of the ordinary.

US Secretary of State John Kerry Tuesday made a third phone call to his Russian counterpart, in which he warned that aid to the Syrian regime would only prolong the conflict in the war-torn country.

Putin had earlier defended Russia’s military assistance to Assad’s government, saying it was impossible to defeat the Islamic State group without cooperation with Damascus and urging other countries to join the cause.

The Obama administration said last week that any strategy to support Assad was “doomed to failure.”

US military officials said on Monday that Russia appeared to be establishing a forward air base in Syria and had sent tanks and artillery to defend it.

The Israeli military option against Iran

Ehud Eilam

The disagreements about Iran’s nuclear program jeopardize the relations between Israel and its American patron. In this sense Iran has already profited from the nuclear agreement.

The agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program will be confirmed by the United States. The Obama administration has gathered enough votes in Congress to prevent any bid there to override the presidential veto. Israel, which opposes the accord, should focus now on American military aid. Talks between the US and Israel about compensating the latter with some kind of an arms deal could focus on helping Israel prepare for a possible showdown against Iran and its allies, mostly Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The disagreements about Iran’s nuclear program jeopardize the relations between Israel and its American patron. In this sense Iran has already profited from the nuclear agreement.Iran benefits from any falling out between Israel and the US. Iran sees both those states as foes since they stand in the way of Iranian hegemony in the Middle East. Weakening the ties between the US and Israel would pave the way for Iran to increase its presence. Therefore for Iran the agreement about its nuclear project has another goal, a more indirect one but still important: to destabilize the Israeli-American alliance. This is why there is a need for another deal, one between the US and Israel.

US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said on September 1, 2015: “While the deal puts limits on Iran, the point I want to make is, the deal places no limits whatsoever on our military and our military option is real and will remain real. We will continue to protect our friends in the region, especially Israel, from Iran’s destabilizing activities.”

It is clear the US will not attack Iran – but it could allow Israel to do so, as a last resort.

The Obama administration seems to be willing to give Israel both defensive and offensive measures. These include F-35 strike fighters that would make it easier for Israel to attack Iran should Iran breach the agreement, let alone rush to produce a nuclear weapon.

The IAF (Israel Air Force) might get also “bunker buster” bombs. Yet even these bombs are incapable of penetrating some of Iran’s highly protected nuclear sites, such as the one in Fordow.

For that mission the IAF needs the MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), a huge American conventional bomb. Obviously there is no point flying all the way to Iran if the IAF does not possess the ability to wipe out Iranian nuclear sites, considering the risks and the ramifications of such a raid.

The MOP must be carried by a heavy bomber such as the B-52 or B-1, which the IAF does not posess. Some in the US Congress support delivering Israel the MOP and the B-52/B-1. The Obama administration might refuse sending Israel the B-52/B-1, but should be willing to let it have the MOP. Then the IAF could improvise, for example by trying to drop the MOP from the C-130J. The latter is a transport plane so it would not be perfect for the job, to put it mildly. Yet it could carry the MOP and it has the range to reach Iran. The C-130J would be vulnerable to Iran’s air defense and air force but those units would be attacked by other Israeli planes, as part of a task force.

To begin with the Iranian air defense is not that strong – as long as it does not assimilate the Russian S-300, an advanced anti-aircraft missile.

Hezbollah possesses some 100,000 rockets and missiles, which can hit almost every spot in Israel. If Israel strikes Iran the latter might order Hezbollah to launch. Nevertheless Hezbollah and/or Iran might not retaliate with full force. It depends on several factors, such as how much damage the Israeli attack inflicts on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Iran might wish to play the victim and wait for a better opportunity to return the favor. However if Hezbollah confronts Israel, Israel would conduct a vast offensive in Lebanon, on the ground, air and sea, aiming to neutralize the threat. It might be costly but Israel could accept that, as part of the effort to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapon.

All in all the IAF has to assimilate the B-52 and at least the MOP in order to deter Iran from producing nuclear weapons. If this does not work Israel would bomb Iran. Such a reliable military option is essential to maintain the security of Israel.

Iran deal: An Iran deal that forgets the lessons of 9/11

September 16, 2015

Source: Iran deal: An Iran deal that forgets the lessons of 9/11 – Washington Times

There was something amazingly symbolic about Congress considering the Obama-Khamenei agreement on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attack.

– The Washington Times – Tuesday, September 15, 2015

There was something amazingly symbolic about Congress considering the Obama-Khamenei agreement on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attack.

Virtually every lesson Americans learned painfully that day has been forgotten in the rush to sign an agreement with the world’s leading state sponsor of terror.

Fourteen years ago, the World Trade Center collapsed, the Pentagon was hit and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. The nation was horrified and enraged.

We learned that we could be surprised.

We learned that our enemies hated us and wanted to kill us.

We learned that our enemies were good at long term planning and at deception.

We learned once again that the military and intelligence communities play a vital role in keeping us safe.

Now, 14 years later, the president and his allies are ignoring every one of these lessons.

They have pushed an agreement that assumes we can trust our mortal enemies and that assumes paper treaties and international bureaucrats can keep us safe.

They pressured their elected allies to side with them in this surrender to the Ayatollah Khameini even when those allies know it is a terrible and dangerous idea.

Forget the harsh language of the opponents. Listen to what the supporters of the deal are saying.

First, our “partner” in this agreement, Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei, reminded us that he views America as “the Great Satan” and vowed that Israel will be eliminated within 25 years. He said:

[Ayatollah] Khomeini called America ‘the Great Satan.’ That is a very wise saying … Satan only deceives man, but the U.S. deceives, murders, and imposes sanctions … After the nuclear talks were over, I heard that the Zionists in occupied Palestine had said: ‘In the meantime, thanks to the results of the talks, we will have 25 years of quiet regarding the problem of Iran. After 25 years, we will think of something.’ I respond to them by saying: ‘First of all, in 25 years you will not be alive.’…God willing, in 25 years there will be no such thing as the Zionist regime in the region, and secondly, during this period, the fighting Islamic spirit will not give the Zionists even a single day of serenity…”

When the leader you are trying to trust tells you before the agreement is ratified that he will destroy Israel and he will continue to preach “Death to America,” you have to wonder what he will say after it is approved.

Our enemies’ assessment of the deal is alarming enough. But some of the best arguments against it come from its supporters here in the United States.

Sen. Cory Booker explained his vote in favor of the agreement this way: “We have now passed a point of no return that we should have never reached, leaving our nation to choose between two imperfect, dangerous and uncertain options … Left with these two choices, I nonetheless believe it is better to support a deeply flawed deal, for the alternative is worse.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal set a low bar when he argued that “while this is not the agreement I would have accepted at the negotiating table, it is better than no deal at all.”

Sen. Claire McCaskill said, “This deal isn’t perfect and no one trusts Iran.”

Rep. Scott Peters of California conceded that “the JCPOA is not perfect. It doesn’t end Iran’s support of terrorism or permanently end Iran’s civilian nuclear energy program. It does extend the international weapons ban for five years and ballistic missile ban for eight years, but does not make the bans permanent.”

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, an Oregon Democrat, said, “This agreement doesn’t solve our problems.”

Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York said he was “concerned that many of the key elements expire in the 1015 year timeframe…”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar said “the agreement is by no means perfect” and went on to indicate how much we have to prop up our allies when we are signing an agreement which frightens them: “I will also push for increased security assistance to Israel and enhanced defense cooperation with our Arab allies to combat terrorism throughout the region.” Of course, the terrorism she wants to combat is supported in large part by the Iran which is about to get billions from the deal.

You can read a long list of what Democrats have said about the deal here. The statements are universally timid, conditional and understated.

The weak support might be because Democrats in Congress realize the Obama-Khamenei agreement is doubly dangerous. First, and most important, it is risking the security and safety of the United States and its allies on an unenforceable paper agreement with religious fanatics who keep chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” This agreement will turn tens of billions of dollars over to the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world. It will dramatically strengthen and legitimize the Iranian dictatorship. It could become a national security nightmare.

Second, and politically fascinating, President Obama and his allies are now gambling the future of the Democratic Party on the trustworthiness and good will of the Ayatollah Khameini.

At any time over the next 14 months, the Iranians could behave so aggressively that the Democratic Party would lose all credibility on national security.

The Iranian dictatorship set out 36 years ago to destroy the Carter Presidency. They did everything they could to humiliate him. It was symbolically important that they released the American hostages as Reagan was being sworn in.

The truth is that neither President Obama nor Secretary of State John Kerry have any idea what the Ayatollah and his dictatorship will do.

The Wall Street Journal captured this extraordinary vulnerability in an editorial, “Khameini the Democrat.” As the editorial noted “by putting up a blocking minority in Congress, the Democrats now own what will follow from the nuclear deal. That’s another way of saying that, on this issue at least, the Ayatollah now owns them. Whatever Iranian ‘democracy’ decides next month on the deal, its Democratic supporters in the U.S. had better steel themselves for a rough ride.”

Never in American history has a great political party tied its identity to a foreign dictator that publicly asserts it wants “Death to America.”

Fourteen years after the 9/11 attack, we should all remember just how dangerous this can become.

Putin, Obama and Iran: a Choice in the Absence of Choice

September 16, 2015

Source: Putin, Obama and Iran: a Choice in the Absence of Choice – Op-Eds – Arutz Sheva

Obama’s deal with Iran opened a “Pandora’s box” not only in the Middle East, but also in Europe and America.

“The prospects are bright, but the road has twists and turns”. These are the words of Mao Zedong, but they could have belonged to Obama.

Unfortunately, with regard to the Iran deal, the “twists and turns” will be so numerous, that not many will manage to see the “bright prospects”.

Obama believes that the agreement with Iran is a unique opportunity to limit the escalation of war in the Middle East. In reality, having created “New Middle East”, where Iranian ayatollahs play the role of the hegemon and covert ally of America, he not only threw dynamite into an already raging fire, but provoked a chain reaction of uncontrollable explosions thousands of kilometers away from the region.

Consequences of the deal with Iran will be ominous, and not only to the Middle East: the West will have to deal not only with the ayatollahs, but with a rival incomparably more powerful and uncontrollable than the ayatollahs – Russia.

At first glance, the conflict between the West and Moscow seems to have nothing to do with the Iran deal. But only at first glance.

It is not clear what exactly prompted Obama to bet on Iran, betraying American strategic allies – Israel and Saudi Arabia, and it’s also past all understanding why he would be engaged in political manipulations in the backyard of Russia – Ukraine.

Due to ignorance, mediocrity and conceit, Obama’s administration encroached on existential interests of Moscow, and the response was decisive and immediate: the occupation of the Crimea and a part of the Eastern Ukraine, the rise of imperial ambitions and anti-American hysteria.

Retaliatory sanctions have become painful to Moscow, but what is much more dangerous for Russians and Putin is the fall of oil prices – the main source of income and power of Russia.

At this point, Obama decided to lift the sanctions against Iran. Russia was against lifting the sanctions, realizing that the ejection of Iran’s oil to the global market would immediately lead to a drop of oil prices. Moscow was forced to support the deal, so as not to obstruct its ally, but the collapse of oil prices coupled with the sanctions could have extremely dangerous consequences for the Kremlin.

The economy is stuck, life is becoming more expensive, and rising prices have already affected the standard of living. The price of some basic goods has risen by about 50% in early 2015.

Besides, the appeasement of Iran allows USA and EU to begin switching their full attention to Ukraine. This doesn’t match up with Kremlin’s plans. Moscow must return oil prices to an acceptable level and distract the West from the conflict in Eastern Europe.

How? The only way is to provoke a new outburst of violence in the Middle East. The stronger the fire, the higher oil prices rise, and the more unstable the global economy becomes. The more the West is engaged in the Middle East, the less strength and desire it possesses to confront Russia for the post-Soviet space so vital for Kremlin – from the Baltics, Ukraine and Moldova to the Caucasus; and the easier it will be to subjugate Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

The West has teased the bear by its clumsy, inept policy, and a wounded bear is a beast that will never allow anyone to play games with it.

Iran, from the point of view of the Kremlin, should and could pour fuel onto the fire in the Middle East, and this coincides with the interests of Iran itself. The window of opportunities opened before Tehran is unique, but short-term – the next USA president perhaps will reject the deal and maybe will try to return America to its place in the world. Iran cannot afford the luxury of waiting – it must act without a delay.

The aims of the two states are the same. All Moscow needs is to support Iranians diplomatically, provide them with modern weapons, and free their hands, giving them a shield against attacks from outside. Such shield will be an advanced version of the S-300 that deprives Israel and Arab states of the possibility to attack Tehran. Iran, in its turn, with the tacit approval of Moscow, can transfer the S-300 to its main ally – “Hezbollah” with its 50,000 missiles. “Hezbollah” has been weakened by “jihadists”, but another round of the successful war with Israel will raise the prestige of this group in the Arab world and will explode the Middle East.

Iran is now trying to transfer modern Russian weapons to “Hezbollah”, like the anti-ship cruise missile “Yakhont” and the medium range surface-to-air missile “Pantsir-S1”.

Having S-300’s  in place, “Hezbollah” will not only cause considerable damage to Israel, but will create a “smoke screen”, under which Iranians will feel free to destabilize pro-Western Gulf monarchies with their Shiite minorities. Yemeni rebels have already used Soviet missiles “OTR-21 Tochka”, apparently obtained from Iran, and these have killed 60 servicemen from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. An escalation of the conflicts in the whole Middle East will provoke a rise in the price of oil, which works in favor of Russia.

The current chaos in Europe caused by crowds of refugees was hardly left unnoticed in Tehran and Moscow. The new wave of refugees from Lebanon (there are about 1.5 million Syrian refugees there) will paralyze Europe, and this is exactly what the both states wish. Panic-stricken Europeans would no longer care about the Russian claims. Oil prices would go up, and the threat from Moscow would be dissolved in the face of hordes from the East.

For the Kremlin such a progression of events is not just a preferable option. It is a matter of life and death. So far Putin has achieved the peak of his popularity, but the steady decline of prices for “black gold” and prolonged sanctions act like a noose around his neck.

In Russia, unfortunate czars never retired “with honors”. They were sent to obscurity, as happened to Peter III and Khrushchev, or murdered in the course of palace coups, like Paul I, and revolutions, like Nicholas II. It is hardly probable that such an outcome satisfies Putin. He has become the ruler returning Russia its glory, power and primordial lands, and he must continue this mission, whether he wants to do it or not.

However, the idea of the “Third Rome”, so popular in Russia today, and the growing power of Moscow against the backdrop of Europe plunging into anarchy, cannot remain without a response from the US. This means the conflict will develop according to its own laws, far beyond the power of Obama.

Obama opened a “Pandora’s box” with his Iran deal, and repercussions will be gloomy for the chicken-hearted, naive, and short-sighted West.

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the second time, Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a vote to move forward on a resolution rejecting the Iran nuclear deal, protecting President Barack Obama’s key foreign policy initiative.

The measure failed Tuesday to gain the 60 votes needed to advance — just as it did last Thursday. The vote was 56 to 42.

Though the measure is unlikely to advance, Republicans staged the Senate vote to make political points against Democrats and in future Senate races. They point to polls showing Americans have reservations about the deal.

The second vote was not the final word in the Senate. Frustrated with the outcome, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set up a third vote Thursday on a measure that would bar Obama from lifting sanctions on Iran unless Tehran recognized Israel and released US prisoners held in Iran.

“Either way this debate will continue,” the Republican leader said.

Despite McConnell’s maneuver on a politically fraught measure certain to show up in campaign ads and fundraising appeals, Democrats were expected to again hold together and block the bill.

As debate resumed Tuesday, McConnell accused Democratic senators of refusing to let the Senate vote on the deal.

“A strong, bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted to reject the deal. A strong, bipartisan majority of the Senate would vote to reject the deal too,” McConnell said. “If only Democrat senators would stop blocking the American people from even having a final vote on one of the most consequential foreign policy issues of our age.”

Making his case for a vote, McConnell quoted Obama as saying, “I believe Congress owes the American people a final up or down vote.”

Other Republicans who spoke out against the deal said even pro-deal Democrats have publicly noted the drawbacks to the agreement.

However, Sen. Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said Tuesday’s vote — and the possibility of another one later in the week — was an exercise in futility.

“We had this vote last week,” Durbin said. “I don’t know why we’re doing a replay of this.”

Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, maintain the issue is settled, especially with the congressional review period expiring Thursday. He called the votes a “charade.”

The international accord between the United States, Iran and five world powers would curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from crippling sanctions that have undercut Tehran’s economy.

The accord got a boost as the Vatican, just ahead of Pope Francis’s visit to Washington next week, welcomed the agreement. Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See’s secretary for relations with states, said in Vienna on Monday that the Vatican backs the agreement because it thinks the best way to resolve disputes is through dialogue and negotiation.

Gallagher said the Vatican hopes full implementation of the accord “will ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program” and “will be a definitive step toward greater stability and security in the region.”
