Rockets fired from Gaza into Israel as seen from Sderot.

More than a dozen Israelis were hurt Wednesday night as Gaza’s ruling Hamas terrorist organization launched a massive, evening-long rocket attack on southern Israel.

Magen David Adom emergency medical response teams reported late in the evening that 17 people were taken to area hospitals, including at least nine with physical injuries. Two of those were critically wounded, according to the report.

Among the wounded were two 13-year-old boys, and a third who was 16 years old. A 54-year-old man was immediately taken into surgery. Ten older people were hurt as well, including several who were treated for shock.

Dozens of rockets, missiles and mortar shells were fired at the western and central Negev by terrorists in Gaza. The IDF ordered residents in the region to remain close to safe spaces and bomb shelters; most elected to bed down with their families as the rocket barrages grew closer and closer together with the passing hours.

In the first barrage, a rocket struck gas balloons outside a home in the border city of Sderot. The ensuing explosion and flames left multiple wounded, including a man with shrapnel wounds and nearly a dozen others in shock. Two pregnant women were also taken to Barzilai Medical Center after they went into labor as a result of the stress.

In response, the IDF launched a large-scale attack on terrorist positions in Gaza. Israel Defense Forces attacked 12 ‘terror targets’ throughout Gaza, including the manufacturing facility the military said had helped to build the attack tunnels.

No group has taken responsibility for the attacks thus far, but Israel is holding Hamas responsible, as it has maintained sole control over the enclave since 2007.

“The IDF sees with severity the terrorist activities of Hamas,” said the army spokesperson in a statement Wednesday night. “The IDF is prepared for a variety of scenarios and is determined to fulfil its mission of defending the citizens of Israel.”

EU ‘deeply regrets’ reimposed US sanctions on Iran

As American sanctions on the Islamic Republic snap back, European Union says parties remaining in nuclear deal will continue importing oil and gas from Tehran; EU also says its ‘determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran.’

The European Union on Monday said it deeply regretted the re-imposition of sanctions by the United States on Iran, adding it and other signatories would work on keeping financial channels with Iran open.

“The remaining parties to the JCPOA have committed to work on, inter alia, the preservation and maintenance of effective financial channels with Iran, and the continuation of Iran’s export of oil and gas,” the European Union’s foreign service said in a statement, referring to the acromym for the nuclear deal struck with Iran in 2015.”On these, as on other topics, our work continues, including with third countries interested in supporting the JCPOA and maintaining economic relations with Iran. These efforts will be intensified and reviewed at Ministerial level in the coming weeks,” the EU added.

“The JCPOA is working and delivering on its goal, namely to ensure that the Iranian program remains exclusively peaceful, as confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 11 consecutive reports,” the statement went on to say. “It is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the entire world. We expect Iran to continue to fully implement all its nuclear commitments under the JCPOA.”

The EU foreign ministers went on to explain that “The lifting of nuclear-related sanctions is an essential part of the deal—it aims at having a positive impact not only on trade and economic relations with Iran, but most importantly on the lives of the Iranian people.”

The European Union also said it is “determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran, in accordance with EU law and with UN Security Council resolution 2231. This is why the European Union’s updated Blocking Statute enters into force on 7 August to protect EU companies doing legitimate business with Iran from the impact of US extra-territorial sanctions.

“Preserving the nuclear deal with Iran is a matter of respecting international agreements and a matter of international security,” the statement concluded.

A first set of US sanctions that had been eased by the Obama administration under the terms of the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal will take effect again on Monday. Those sanctions target Iran’s automotive sector as well as gold and other metals.

The US also has banned imports of Iranian products such as carpets and pistachios and revoked licenses that allowed Iran to purchase US and European aircraft. Iran acquired five new European commercial planes on Sunday before the sales were cut off.

The last and most significant sanctions—those on Iran’s oil sector and central bank—will be restored on Nov. 4. Iranian oil sales are a crucial source of hard currency.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday Washington intends to fully enforce the sanctions on orders from US President Donald Trump.

Pompeo, speaking with reporters returning with him from an Asian trip, said the White House would detail implementation of the measures on Monday morning.

“It’s an important part of our efforts to push back against Iranian malign activity,” he said. “The United States is going to enforce these sanctions.”

Despite opposition from European allies, Trump in May pulled the United States out of a 2015 deal between world powers and Tehran under which international sanctions were lifted in return for curbs on Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump had denounced the deal reached under his White House predecessor, Barack Obama, as one-sided in Iran’s favor.

Starting this week, Washington will reimpose sanctions on Iran’s purchases of US dollars, its trade in gold and precious metals, and its dealings with metals, coal and industrial-related software.

The United States has told other countries they must halt imports of Iranian oil starting in early November or face US financial measures.

More than 60% of the Palestinians support the Palestinian Authority’s position not to accept the US as a sole mediator in the peace process, according to a Palestinian public poll published last Tuesday.

The poll, conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Center, showed that over 80% of Palestinians don’t believe that US President Donald Trump’s yet-to-be-announced plan for peace in the Middle East, which is also known as the “Deal of the Century,” would produce anything acceptable to the Palestinians. It also found that the percentage of Palestinians opposed to the Oslo Accords was on the rise.

The survey, which was conducted between June 26 and July 7, covered 1200 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip and has a margin of error of 3%.

The poll’s results showed that Palestinians were divided over the idea of returning to peace negotiations with Israel – 49.1% were in favor of renewed negotiations and 45.6% opposed it.

The PA leadership’s position regarding Trump’s “Deal of the Century” has led to some improvement in its standing, the poll showed. The percentage of those who trust PA President Mahmoud Abbas rose to 11.1% in this poll after it was 10.6% in a previous poll published last January. Furthermore, there was a rise in the percentage of those who trust Abbas’s ruling Fatah faction more than other groups – from 22.3% to 25% over the same period.

The survey found that if presidential elections were held in which only Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh ran, 35.3% said they would vote for Abbas, while 19.3% said they would vote for Haniyeh.

If elections were held without Abbas, 11.7% said they would vote for jailed Fatah operative Marwan Barghouti, followed by Ismail Haniyeh, at 11.6%. Abbas’s arch-rival in Fatah, Mohammed Dahlan, came in third with 8.3%.

Asked about the Oslo Accords that were signed 25 years ago between Israel and the PLO, more than 45% of respondents said the agreements had harmed Palestinian national interests, as opposed to 33.6% in March 2013. Only 11.9% claimed they had served Palestinian national interests, and 34.0% said the accords had made no difference.

More than 61% of respondents said they opposed the Oslo Accords (48.3% in March, 2013) compared to 24% who said they supported them.

With regards to the ongoing dispute between Hamas and Fatah, more than 37% of respondents held the Ramallah-based PA government responsible for the crisis, as opposed to 29% who blamed Hamas.

The majority of respondents, 56.9% expressed their pessimism towards the likelihood that the reconciliation agreement signed in October 2017 would be implemented as opposed to 35.5% who said the opposite.

The poll showed that the majority of respondents, 39.3% depend on social media as a source of news, followed by 28% who depend on television, 17.3% who depend on news websites, 7.4% on radio and 1.4% on newspapers.

Leaked UN report claims North Korea’s nuclear & missile programs still active

North Korea has not abandoned its nuclear and missile programs, despite this year’s earlier diplomatic breakthroughs and destruction of test sites, Reuters reports, citing a confidential UN paper.

The leaked report is said to be a six-month review by independent experts monitoring the implementation of United Nations sanctions on North Korea, and was submitted to the relevant UN committee late on Friday.

The paper, as cited by Reuters, alleges that Pyongyang has not abandoned its pursuit of missile and nuclear programs. It is also violating UN sanctions by exporting weapons to a “range of Middle East [and] African states,” including to the Houthi rebels fighting against Saudi Arabia in Yemen, and has shipped coal, petroleum and textile products, all made illicit by the sanctions regime.

The report comes two months after North Korea made an unprecedented gesture by demolishing its only nuclear test site at Punggye-ri, while inviting a group of international journalists to witness it. An RT crew was at the scene. With the UN report covering six months, the excerpts quoted by Reuters do not clarify whether Pyongyang’s alleged nuclear- and missile-related activities came before or after the demolition, nor do they specify the evidence used to establish the fact of the violations.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un indicated he was willing to denuclearize at an April meeting with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in. The credit for this pledge was claimed by US President Donald Trump and his administration, and in June Trump himself went to meet Kim in an unprecedented personal visit, where Kim confirmed his commitment.

Despite the diplomatic breakthroughs, the US says the sanctions, which have been gradually choking off every venue of export and import for North Korea, must remain in place until Kim gives up all of his nukes. In July, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it should take 2.5 years for that to happen. In a later interview, he said it was Kim’s decision to set an actual timeline for the process.

Earlier this week, several media reports, citing anonymous officials and unspecified intelligence reports, claimed there was renewed activity at a North Korean missile factory, and that Pyongyang was making “one or two” new intercontinental ballistic missiles.

U.S. Issues New Warning to Europe: End Business With Iran or Face Harsh Sanctions

Congress and the Trump administration are issuing a stern warning to European partners: End all business ties with the Iranian regime or face harsh new sanctions in the coming months, a move that could impact international financial markets and U.S. banks tied to foreign monetary institutions, according to multiple senior U.S. officials who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon about diplomatic efforts to pressure Europe on Iran.

The Trump administration and many in Congress have been working in tandem to pressure European partners over their ongoing financial ties to Iran ahead of efforts by the United States to fully reinstate harsh sanctions on Iran, including on its lucrative oil sector and banking systems, U.S. officials said.

Key European partners have expressed opposition to the new U.S. sanctions in recent months and have held a series of meetings with senior Iranian officials to discuss tactics for evading the new American sanctions, which follow on the heels on President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon the landmark nuclear deal.

The increased financial pressure if part of a larger effort by the Trump administration and its allies in Congress to further choke the Iranian economy as dissident protesters in the Islamic Republic continue to rail against the hardline regime for its spending on foreign interventionism in hotspots such as Syria and its continued support for international terror groups.

Diplomatic tensions over the new sanctions have heightened ahead of November, when the Trump administration expects to fully reinstate sanctions on Iran that could cripple its business ties to Europe and further strain the regime’s cash reserves.

Iranian officials have responded to the sanctions with threats of violence, including a possible military blockade of critical shipping routes in the Persian Gulf that has stoked fears of a potential war in the region. Top Israeli officials declared on Thursday that they would respond militarily should Iran take such actions.

Senior U.S. officials leading the efforts to pressure European partners over their business ties with Iran told the Free Beacon the Trump administration will not hesitate to sanction those who violate the new sanctions, warning that international banking institutions and even top U.S. banks could be hit with sanctions for not complying.

“The Iranian regime has and continues to use terrorism as a weapon in Europe,” Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, told the Free Beacon. “We must be vigilant in finding out about their plans and stopping them before they succeed.”

Grenell and other top U.S. diplomats “are urging our partners to help stop the flow of money to this Iranian regime because it is used to fund malign activities,” the ambassador said.

Administration allies in Congress have been helping to bolster these efforts.

Ten U.S. senators recently wrote to the EU3—Britain, Germany, and France—warning them to comply with all new U.S. sanctions coming down the pike.

As these European countries work to preserve the nuclear deal and keep business with Iran open, the senators ensured these countries they will not be kept safe from new U.S. sanctions.

“We write to urge you to comply with all American sanctions, but also to emphasize we would consider it particularly troubling if you sought to evade or undermine American statutes,” write the 10 Republican senators, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), Tom Cotton (R., Ark.), and David Perdue (R., Ga.), among others.

“First, these statutes align with your governments’ commitment to deepen cooperation addressing Iran’s ballistic missile program and destabilizing activities,” the letter states. “Second, they were passed over several years by overwhelming bipartisan majorities—including in some cases via unanimous Senate passage—and Congress is obligated to ensure their implementation.”

“Any attempt to evade or undermine them could well prompt Congressional action, in coordination with other elements of the U.S. government, to ensure their integrity,” the letter continues.

Senior congressional sources working on the matter who spoke to the Free Beacon said the decision is clear: Europe must choose between the United States and Iran.

“Everyone has gone out of their way to be nice to the Europeans while they’ve been working through the stages of grief over the Iran deal,” said one senior congressional official who has been working on the matter. “There’s deep appreciation across Congress for the importance of NATO and the other elements of the transatlantic relationship.”

“But enough is enough,” said the source, who would speak only on background when discussing efforts to pressure Europe. “Iran is threatening to shut down Gulf energy exports, they’re promoting sectarian warfare across the Middle East, and they’re launching terrorism globally and even in Europe. It’s inexplicable and unacceptable for the Europeans to choose Iran over us.”

A Treasury Department official, responding to queries from the Free Beacon on upcoming sanctions actions, said the administration could not specifically comment on potential actions, but pointed to wide-ranging sanctions guidance recently issued by the administration.

A full range of sanctions on Iran are expected to be put back in place by Nov. 4, with a range of new actions expected early this month.

The new sanctions will not only hit Iran and its global terror operations, but also international financial systems such as the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or SWIFT, the major provider of global financial services.

American and European leaders on SWIFT are being told that they, too, will not be spared from new sanctions if they continue to facilitate business with Iran.

“There’s no question the banks represented on the board of SWIFT are in serious jeopardy—both the American banks and the foreign ones,” said Richard Goldberg, a senior adviser to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former senior Senate aide who was one of the architects of the initial SWIFT sanctions in early 2012.

“Congress authorized the president to take a wide range of actions against directors personally and against their financial institution employers,” Goldberg explained. “The Trump administration understands how crucial it is to sever Iran from SWIFT so you can bet they will seek maximum enforcement of the sanctions.”

Diplomatic warnings to SWIFT members have already been issued, according to sources familiar with ongoing actions to lay the groundwork for new sanctions.

“Let’s just say that if I was a director or senior employee at SWIFT, I’d make sure I had all my money accounted for and didn’t plan any vacations to the United States for a while,” said one veteran foreign policy adviser familiar with the Trump administration’s thinking on the issue.

“For the two American banks—Citi and JP Morgan—well, I wouldn’t want to be in their C-Suites when Squawk Box is wall-to-wall covering the massive government action that just came their way for non-compliance,” the source warned.

Lord Justice Burnett and two other judges sat today in London, the prison on bail. “The appellant is granted bail and the prosecution Due contempt of court in Leeds will be renegotiated,” the judge ruled today . Robinson (Civic: Tommy Robinson) was not present in the courtroom. His supporters cheered.

His lawyer Jeremy Your had argued in court that at Robinsons flash condemnation in May “procedural errors” due to “prejudice” were committed. According to Your was the 13-month sentence for journalism on public property “clearly disproportionate”. The Court dismissed this argument.

Robinson is immediately released today and is expected with his family today. Robinson had written in June from prison a moving letter to his family ( jouwatch reported ).

His team wrote on Facebook : “Tommy just called his family from prison to ask what was the result. He said his fellow inmates called already that he was free, but did not want to believe it. Russian envoy: Deal reached to keep Iran 85 km from Israeli-Syria border

After Israel rejected offer to keep Iranian forces 100 km from border, Russian Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev claims ‘we managed to attain the pullout of Iranian units 85 kilometers from the Israeli border.’

Russia and Israel have reached an agreement to remove Iranian forces in Syria to within 85 kilometers of the Golan Heights border, Russia’s special envoy for Syria told the Sputnik news agency on Wednesday.

“As we took into account the Israeli concerns, we managed to attain the pullout of Iranian units 85 kilometers (some 53 miles) from the Israeli border,” Russian Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said.Lavrentyev also noted Moscow believes Israeli concerns over the presence of Iran and its proxies near the Golan border are decreasing. “Yes, of course, we are certain of this,” he told Sputnik in response to a question about it.

Last month, Israel rejected a Russian offer to keep Iranian forces in Syria 100 km (62 miles) from the border, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly telling Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that it was not enough.

“We will not allow the Iranians to establish themselves even 100 kilometers from the border,” Netanyahu told Lavrov, according to an Israeli official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“The Russians are speaking about (the 100-km buffer zone) and are committed to it, but we said there are also long-range weapons beyond this zone, and all those forces must leave Syria,” the official said.

Even before that, Israel had turned down a proposal by Russia, the big-power backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, that Iranian forces be kept 80 km from the frontier.

Netanyahu met with a visiting Russian delegation led by Lavrov on July 23 to discuss Assad’s advance in southwest Syria and “issues related to Israel border security.”

Another Israeli official described the meeting, which lasted for over two hours, as “an important meeting at a significant time in which we discussed the details of Iranian presence and activity in Syria, while presenting maps and intelligence materials, as we explained our policy to push Iran out of Syria.”

The official said Israel will maintain full freedom of operations for the IDF, and detailed what the removal of Iran from Syria should entail: “First of all, all the long-range weapons must be removed from Syria; precise weapons production must be stopped; other strategic weapons, such as air defense, must be removed as well; the border crossings that allow the smuggling of these weapons must be closed, including on the Syrian-Lebanese border where weapons are smuggled into Lebanon, and the Iraqi-Syrian border through which weapons are smuggled from Iran into Syria itself.”

Russia has warned it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to fully withdraw from the country. However, Moscow has said it wants to see the separation of forces on the frontier preserved.

US must return to nuclear deal before future talks with Tehran – Rouhani aide

A return to the 2015 nuclear deal is the key to future talks between the US and Iran, an adviser to President Hassan Rouhani said. President Donald Trump is ready to negotiate, but believes the existing deal is “a waste of paper.”

“Respecting the Iranian nation’s rights, reducing hostilities and returning to the nuclear deal are steps that can be taken to pave the bumpy road of talks between Iran and America,” Hamid Aboutalebi tweeted on Tuesday.

He was commenting on remarks made by Trump a day earlier, when the US leader said he was open to talks with Iran “anytime they want” without preconditions. The proposal represented a drastic change of tone, considering that last week Trump was embroiled in threatening exchanges with the Iranian leadership. This included a warning to President Rouhani that Iran could face “CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE,” in an all-caps tweet.

Relations between the two nations had reached a low point since Trump unilaterally pulled out of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program in May. The move was widely condemned by China, Russia and even the EU, who are all also signatories of the deal. Washington has since hit Iran with a new round of sanctions and announced a plan to block the country’s oil trade.

Back in May, Trump called the Iran deal “defective at its core,” and his opinion didn’t seem to change. Speaking about possible US-Iran talks, the president explicitly ruled out the possibility of keeping the existing deal, calling it “a waste of paper.”

Iran, on the other hand, made it clear that the Islamic Republic is against changing the JCPOA. “We will neither outsource our security, nor will we renegotiate or add on to a deal we have already implemented in good faith,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told Al Jazeera last week.

Iran’s compliance with the 2015 deal has been repeatedly confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
