Iranian Convoy Hit near Homs, 9 Casualties

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Monday that explosions shook an area in the eastern countryside of Homs after midnight Monday, citing reliable sources saying that they were caused by airstrikes that targeted vehicles of regime’s allies.
According to the Syrian Observatory, a column of Iranian Forces and their loyal gunmen of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities was hit by warplanes of unknown origin—possibly belonging to the US-led International Coalition—as the convoy passed near the al-Tanf area which is controlled by forces of the International Coalition and the Western-supported rebel factions.
The attack killed at least 8 of the Iranian force and the militia gunmen—1 Iranian, 3 Syrians and 4 “others,” and injured at least 11.
AFP inquired with the Coalition forces whether they were behind the attack but did not receive a response.
On Sunday an attack was reported in Syria near the Al-Maza military airport in Damascus, which was attributed to Israel. The Assad regime denied an Israeli involvement, stating the cause for the enormous explosions was an electric malfunction. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that two military personnel were killed and 11 others were wounded in that attack.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini have pledged to create an “anti-immigration axis” aimed at countering the pro-migration policies of the European Union.
Meeting in Milan on August 28, Orbán and Salvini, vowed to work together with Austria and the Visegrad Group — the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia — to oppose a pro-migration group of EU countries led by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Orbán and Salvini are seeking a coordinated strategy ahead of the March 2019 European Parliament elections to defeat the pro-immigration Party of European Socialists (PES), a pan-European party representing national-level socialist parties from all EU member states. The objective is to change the political composition of European institutions, including the European Parliament and the European Commission, to reverse the EU’s open-door migration policies.
At a joint press conference, Salvini said:
“Today begins a journey that will continue in the coming months for a different Europe, for a change of the European Commission, of European policies, which puts at the center the right to life, work, health, safety, all that the European elites, financed by [billionaire Hungarian philanthropist George] Soros and represented by Macron, deny.
“We are close to a historic turning point at the continental level. I am astonished at the stupor of a political left that now exists only to challenge others and believes that Milan should not host the president of a European country, as if the left has the authority to decide who has the right to speak and who does not — and then they wonder why no one votes for them anymore.
“This is the first of a long series of meetings to change destinies, not only of Italy and of Hungary, but of the whole European continent.”
Orbán added:
“European elections will be held soon, and many things must change. At the moment there are two sides in Europe: One is led by Macron, who supports mass migration. The other side is led by countries that want to protect their borders. Hungary and Italy belong to the latter.
“Hungary has shown that we can stop migrants on land. Salvini has shown that migrants can be stopped at sea. We thank him for protecting Europe’s borders.
“Migrants must be sent back to their countries. Brussels says we cannot do it. They also said it was impossible to stop migrants on land, but we did it.
“Salvini and I, we seem to share the same destiny. He is my hero.”
Macron responded:
“If they wanted to see me as their main opponent, they were right to do so. It is clear that today a strong opposition is building up between nationalists and progressives and I will yield nothing to nationalists and those who advocate hate speech.”
Salvini fired back:
“From the beginning of 2017 to the present day, the France of ‘do-good Macron’ has rejected more than 48,000 immigrants at the Italian border, including women and children. Is this the ‘welcoming and supportive’ Europe that Macron and the do-gooders are talking about?
“Instead of giving lessons to others, I would invite the hypocritical French president to reopen his borders and welcome the thousands of refugees he promised to take in.
“Italy is no longer the refugee camp of Europe. The party for smugglers and do-gooders is over!”
In July, Salvini said that he wanted to create a pan-European network of like-minded, nationalist parties:
“To win [the Italian elections] we had to unite Italy, now we have to unite Europe. I am thinking about a ‘League of the Leagues of Europe,’ bringing together all the free and sovereign movements that want to defend their people and their borders.”
Salvini proposed that the network include Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders, France’s National Front leader Marine Le Pen, and Hungary’s Orbán, among others. He also said that the European Parliament elections in 2019 should be a referendum on “a Europe without borders” versus “a Europe that protects its citizens.”
Salvini has repeatedly criticized the European Union over mass migration, accusing the bloc of having abandoned Italy as it struggles to deal with the more than 600,000 migrants who have arrived in the country since 2014. The problem has been exacerbated by EU regulations.
Under an EU rule — known as the Dublin Regulation — migrants must seek asylum in the country where they first enter the European Union. This has placed an inordinate burden on Italy, given its geographical proximity to Africa.
Italy has long sought to overhaul the Dublin Regulation, but other EU member states, most notably Hungary, have opposed changing the agreement. The dispute highlights the challenges of forming a united anti-immigration axis at the EU level: the interests of many EU member states are diametrically opposed.
Although Italy and Hungary, for example, agree that mass migration should be completely stopped, they disagree on how to deal with the migrants who already are in the EU. While Italy wants the migrants redistributed to other EU countries, Hungary and the Visegrad states are adamantly opposed to accepting any migrants at all.
In an interview with the Czech newspaper DNES, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, ahead of his August 28 visit in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said:
“I insist that we will not take any illegal migrants from Italy or elsewhere. This is nothing against Italy, to which we are sympathetic; it is a crucial strategy. It is, in my view, a key signal, a symbol and a message to migrants and smugglers that it makes no sense to sail to Europe….
Babiš added that the European Union must overcome its differences and agree on a common pan-European migration policy:
“If Italy does not accept migrants, if Malta does not accept them, then Spain will. We are sending a message that it is possible to get to Europe from Morocco through Spain. We must stop the migration stream. I want to talk about it with my partners in Italy, Malta, and, of course, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has now acted with Spain. We have to work very hard to work on the solution because we have needlessly lost three years with the absurd debate about quotas…
“We must protect what our ancestors built for more than a thousand years. It is not a slogan, it is a fact.”
Salvini’s embrace of Orbán has also exposed differences in Italy’s ruling coalition, comprised of Salvini’s League and the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) led by Luigi Di Maio.
On August 23, Di Maio threatened to withhold Italian payments to the European Union if a top-level EU meeting in Brussels scheduled for August 24 failed to produce pledges from other EU countries to accept migrants from Italy. In an interview on Italian TV, which he also posted on his Facebook account, Di Maio said:
“If tomorrow nothing comes out of the European Commission meeting, if they decide nothing regarding the … redistribution of the migrants, the whole Five Star Movement and I will no longer be prepared to give €20 billion euros ($23 billion) to the European Union every year.”
After the EU meeting failed to produce a solution, the leaders of M5S in Italy’s chamber of deputies and senate, Francesco D’Uva and Stefano Patuanelli, respectively, issued a statement:
“Countries that do not participate in relocation and which do not even deign to respond to Italy’s request for help, should no longer receive European funds from us, and among these at the moment, is Hungary.”
In an August 27 interview with the newspaper La Stampa, Di Maio again lashed out at Orbán:
“Orbán’s Hungary raises barbed-wire walls and refuses migrant allocations. For those who do not accept the allocation, they should not be entitled to European funding.”
Salvini defended Orbán: “I respect Hungary’s absolute right to defend the borders and the security of its people. The shared objective is the defense of external borders.”
Orbán replied: “We need a new European Commission that is committed to the defense of Europe’s borders. We need a Commission after the European elections that does not punish those countries — like Hungary — that protect their borders.”

Kredo Describes ‘Long-Ignored’ Story of Iranian Spy Operations in U.S.
Washington Free Beacon senior writer Adam Kredo said Friday that two Iranian spies recently arrested in the U.S. were part of a much larger intelligence effort by the Islamic Republic.
“This is a story long-ignored,” Kredo said.
Kredo, speaking on on One America News Network’s “Tipping Point,” described how Iran’s intelligence activity reaches far around the world. Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) described the arrested Iranians as just the “tip of the iceberg,” and Kredo warned of mounting evidence that Iran is actively engaged in the U.S. and the western hemisphere.
“All we have to do is look at Latin America and the sophisticated operation that Hezbollah runs to just operating with impunity in terms of drug trade and arms trafficking, but very much embedding themselves in the government of certain left-leaning South American nations,” he said.
He described how the agents arrested were focused on Jewish and Israeli facilities for a possible attack.
“They were canvassing, essentially spying on Jewish and Israeli facilities around town with what they expected was the intent of planning some sort of terror attack,” he said.
“The Iranians have a very sophisticated espionage operation,” he said, noting it is bolstered by terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.
He said it’s important to “take the Iranians at face value” when they show their intentions.
Roskam told the Free Beacon that more is yet to be learned about Iran’s activities:
While the arrest of the two Iranians was met with shock in the press, Roskam said he was not surprised by the arrests, which have unearthed concrete evidence of the Islamic Republic’s efforts to foment discord across the globe, including on American soil.
“This is the tip of the iceberg,” Roskam said in an interview. “This is not a surprise and this is a result of the Iran regime getting financial support from the Obama administration in the Iran deal.”
Iran has been emboldened by the lack of international repercussions on its malevolent behavior and may have increased its intelligence operations in America in the years since the landmark nuclear deal, he said.
Iran is “acting with impunity, that deal emboldened them,” Roskam said. “This is an unmasking of that. Unfortunately it’s all too predictable. Give a malevolent regime huge amounts of cash with no restraining influence and this is what happens.”
The Trump Justice Department announced last week it had arrested two Iranians and charged them with spying on behalf of the hardline regime, a discovery that has refocused attention on the Islamic Republic’s global spy operations.
Jordan PM who signed Israel peace deal: Haifa should be taken by force if we can

The former Jordanian prime minister who signed the peace treaty with Israel said in a recent interview that his country would “take Haifa by force” if it ever has the military power to do so, despite the 1994 treaty.
Abdelsalam al-Majali, 93, served as prime minister in 1993-1995, during which he signed the accord with his Israeli counterpart Yitzhak Rabin, and took office again in 1997-1998.
But in a TV interview aired on August 18, he said: “The Arabs do not have any power. If we ever have military power, will we let them keep Haifa? We’ll take it.”
“If tomorrow we become stronger and can take Haifa by force, will we really decline just because we have an agreement with them?” Majali told Jordan Today TV in remarks translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute.
Earlier in the interview, Majali and the TV host had been discussing the “right of return” which Palestinians claim five million people — tens of thousands of living original refugees from what is today’s Israel, and their millions of descendants — are eligible for. Israel rejects the demand, saying that it represents a bid by the Palestinians to destroy Israel by weight of numbers and that no other population of refugees has been dealt with in that manner.

“There are millions of Jordanian Palestinians who have property in Israel,” Majali said. “They have the right to get it back or get compensation for it.”
The host was opposed to the idea of compensation, equating it with the Palestinians “sell[ing] their land for a price.”
Majali said that people would collect the compensation from “Haifa, Jaffa, and elsewhere beyond the West Bank,” adding that retaking the land wasn’t possible for the time being because “[The Israelis] own that land. They live and build there, while you are not there, and you don’t have an army or anything.”
When the host argued it was better for the Palestinian cause to refuse the compensation and leave the land “occupied,” Majali said: “Well, what can you do? You lost the land to a military force. You do not have any power. All you do is talk.”
It was then that he made the remark about conquering Haifa if Jordan ever got stronger.

At the beginning of the interview, Majali defended the peace treaty he signed 24 years ago, which is opposed to this day by many Jordanians, saying that “my mentality is a mentality of peace.”
“As long as you do not have force of another kind, peace is your only option,” he added.
He said that contrary to what many Jordanians believe, “Israel continues to give us more water than we are due.”
Hamas Chief: We Will Hit Tel Aviv

Yahya Sinwar, head of Hamas in Gaza, said on Wednesday that his group had sent a message to Israel through intermediaries that it would “turn the cauldron in the face of the occupation and let the sirens continue in Gush Dan for six months.”
Gush Dan is the common reference to the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, where an estimated four million Israelis live.
“I told the mediator, who met me and [leader of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades] Marwan Issa, that I wanted to convey this message in the event that the efforts to calm things down failed and Israel launched a new aggression on Gaza,” Sinwar said.
According to Sinwar, Hamas is capable today of firing in five minutes the same number of rockets it launched over the 51 days of Operation Protective Edge in 2014. He claimed that “the number of tunnels and waylays prepared by the resistance forces is greater than that faced by the occupation (that’s Israel) in the previous war, and the missiles’ capabilities have improved.”
“There is discussion about a truce and the possibility of obtaining a stabilization of the 2014 truce, in return for breaking the siege in a concrete way, and the time limit for reaching this truce is not long,” the Hamas leader warned.
Sinwar revealed that there had been contacts between Israel and Hamas regarding the return of the two Israeli captives and the bodies of two missing IDF soldiers, and stressed that Hamas insists that this discussion not be part of the emerging truce deal.
Most of Sinwar’s speech was devoted to the Palestinian Authority and its senior officials, saying that any attempt by Chairman Abbas or the PA to impose sanctions on Gaza would constitute a breakdown of the reconciliation talks and Hamas would respond accordingly.
“While the occupation was acting aggressively against the residents of the Gaza Strip, Abu Mazen (Abbas’s nom de guerre) imposed sanctions on us in order to weaken the resistance,” Sinwar said, declaring, “We will not allow the collapse of Gaza at any cost.”
A Hamas spokesman on Wednesday called on the Palestinian Authority and Fatah to cancel their recognition of Israel, stop the security coordination with the IDF, and lift the sanctions from the Gaza Strip.

Arrest of Iranian Spies in U.S. Just ‘Tip of the Iceberg,’ Lawmaker Warns
The recent arrest of two Iranian agents alleged to have been running spy operations on U.S. soil is just “the tip of the iceberg” in terms of the Islamic Republic’s efforts to conduct intelligence operations in America that could result in a terrorist attack, according to a leading lawmaker and U.S. officials who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon about the matter.
Following the arrest of two Iranian individuals charged with spying on Jewish and Israeli facilities in the California area, Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) told the Free Beacon it is likely Iran has stationed multiple regime-tied agents in the United States to conduct intelligence operations.
While the arrest of the two Iranians was met with shock in the press, Roskam said he was not surprised by the arrests, which have unearthed concrete evidence of the Islamic Republic’s efforts to foment discord across the globe, including on American soil.
“This is the tip of the iceberg,” Roskam said in an interview. “This is not a surprise and this is a result of the Iran regime getting financial support from the Obama administration in the Iran deal.”

The Trump Justice Department announced last week it had arrested two Iranians and charged them with spying on behalf of the hardline regime, a discovery that has refocused attention on the Islamic Republic’s global spy operations.
Lawmakers and experts have been warning for some time that Iran has stationed what some described as “sleeper cell” agents across the United States. These agents are believed to operate with impunity and could lay the groundwork for a large-scale terror attack on American soil.
The two Iranian individuals—identified as Ahmadreza Mohammadi-Doostdar, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, and Majid Ghorbani, an Iranian citizen and resident of California—were formally charged by the Trump administration “with allegedly acting on behalf of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran by conducting covert surveillance of Israeli and Jewish facilities in the United States, and collecting identifying information about American citizens and U.S. nationals who are members of the group Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK),” an Iranian opposition group that promotes regime change in the Islamic Republic, the DOJ announced.
One U.S. official, agreeing with Roskam’s assessment, told the Free Beacon Iran has been running “vast espionage and information operations in the United States” with virtual impunity. The arrest of the two recently charged Iranians denotes a significant shift in policy that could result in the capture of more agents.
“If there’s anything that’s become obvious in the last few months, it’s that the Iranians are running vast espionage and information operations in the United States,” said the source, who could only discuss the situation on background. “The Trump administration has been warning since day one that some of the windfall Iran got from the nuclear deal has been going into malign cyber operations.”
“The propaganda network that Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube uncovered was doubling as a hacking network that had been ramping up in the last couple of years,” the source said, referring the recent uncovering of a massive social media influence campaign believed to be organized by Iran.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), also a vocal critic of the Iranian regime, told the Free Beacon the recent arrest of the two Iranians is cause for major concern.
“I am deeply alarmed by the Justice Department’s new indictment against alleged Iranian agents,” Rubio said. “Iran’s regime has sponsored terrorist attacks against Americans abroad and our allies, and may now be seeking to target American citizens, as well as Jewish or Israeli facilities, on U.S. soil.”
Roskam, in his comment to the Free Beacon, noted that “Iran’s malevolence” toward Israel and other countries it considers an enemy is well documented.
“What’s new here is a level of aggression against the United States and an impunity with which they’re operating,” the lawmaker said, referring to the spy operations on Jewish targets—a cornerstone of Iran’s global terror operations, particularly its 1994 bombing of a Jewish facility in Argentina that sent shockwaves through the global Jewish community.
The operations on U.S. soil are “incredibly provocative and an indication where the Iranian regime is,” Roskam said.
Iran has publicly stated multiple times over the past years that it has a vast espionage network that includes the United States. While many have dismissed these claims as posturing, Roskam said Iran should be taken at its word.
“The takeaway is we can take the Iranians at face value,” he said. “They were declarative during the Iran negotiations: They were not willing to make any commitments as it relates to their state sponsorship of terror. It’s clear they haven’t. This can’t be a surprise to anyone. It is entirely consistent with what they’ve been communicating. The surprise is the idea anyone thought they were slowing down or giving up their aggressive disposition.”
Congress will play a prominent role in investigating the matter in the months to come. This will include working with federal law enforcement to ensure Iranian agents are not able to coordinate terror attacks on Jewish or Israeli facilities.
Earlier this year, Congress heard testimony from a panel of experts of former U.S. officials about Iran’s “sleeper cell” networks in America.
Iran, through terrorists affiliated with Hezbollah, could easily launch strikes in America.
“They are as good or better at explosive devices than ISIS, they are better at assassinations and developing assassination cells,” Michael Pregent, a former intelligence officer who worked to counter Iranian influence in the region, said during the April hearing. “They’re better at targeting, better at looking at things,” and they can outsource attacks to Hezbollah.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Tuesday questioned the figures on “Palestinian refugees” being offered by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), suggesting they are significantly inflated.
Speaking at the pro-Israel think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Haley was asked by FDD President Cliff May about the US relationship with UNRWA, following the restrictions imposed on the agency by the White House and statements from President Trump and others in the administration questioning its viability.
“UNRWA can stay there, and we will be a donor if it reforms what it does,” Ambassador Haley said. “If it goes and makes sure that they’re not doing those teachings [of hate] in textbooks, if they actually change the number of refugees to an accurate account. We will look back at partnering them. But otherwise, you’re just molding an organization that has flaws into another organization, and that’s not fixing the problem. I think we have to go further than that.”
UNWRA claims to provide services to five million “Palestinian refugees,” the vast majority of whom were not yet born in 1948. Most are descendants from individuals who fled their homes in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence.
May inquired about Haley’s definition of “who is a Palestinian.”
“Right now, you have this interesting and kind of illogical situation where somebody who is a Palestinian, living in a territory he considers to be Palestine, can also say, ‘And I’m a refugee from Palestine. Here I am in Ramallah, I’m a refugee from Palestine,’” May argued, wondering: “And why isn’t the Palestinian Authority, which claims to be governing these people, assuming some responsibility as opposed to saying no, there’s a UN agency that does it, it’s funded by the donor community, which means us and a few others, we don’t need to worry about this, we can worry about other things.”
“It’s bigger than that, even,” the ambassador responded. “When you look at UNRWA, there’s a couple of issues there. First of all, you’re looking at the fact that, yes, there’s an endless number of refugees that continue to get assistance, but more importantly, the Palestinians continue to bash America. This is the government, not the people, not the Palestinian people.
“So the government continues to bash America. They have their hand out wanting UNRWA money. We were supposed to […] give them $130 million. We cut it in half, saying that they really needed to reform and fix the things they were doing, because they teach anti-Israeli and anti-American things in their textbooks. They are not necessarily doing things that would cause peace…
“So instead of the $130 million, we give them $65 million. They didn’t say thank you. UNRWA had them protest in the streets that we didn’t give more. So at the last Security Council meeting we had on the Palestinian issue and UNRWA, I went and said, ‘You are all so quick to wag your finger at us for not giving more. Where is Saudi Arabia? Where is United Arab Emirates? Where is Kuwait? Where are all of those countries? Do they not care enough about Palestinians to go and give money to make sure these kids are taken care of?”
At this point the audience applauded the ambassador.
She continued: “If the region doesn’t invest in those areas, why are we being faulted for not investing in those areas? They have to have skin in the game. They have to – they’re the ones that fight me every day on Israel issues. But yet they don’t give a penny when it comes to – any more than they have to. They give tokens, and then we still are the largest donor of UNRWA at the same time.
“So it goes to a second set. Our job is not to take the beatings that you give us, saying we’re not kind to Palestinians and then turn around pay for them. Our job is to make sure that, look, we’ll be a partner with you, but only on a partner basis of something you believe in. So you show us you care, and then we’ll come back and decide if we’re going to give.”
