Rouhani pretends Iran defeated the US, without actually doing anything

The Iranian president’s speech is out of touch with both the IRGC’s actions in Iraq and the failures of his own administration to fight the coronavirus.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani needs to find a feather to put in his cap after failures to confront the coronavirus have left millions of Iranians vulnerable. His response: We’ve done everything right and we have responded to the US over the killing of Qasem Soleimani and we defeated the US over oil sanctions. There is one problem. Rouhani hasn’t accomplished any of the things he claims to have done over the last year.

His message to the Iranian public on Wednesday was bragging in the face of a growing crisis. While his own members of parliament are chaffing under the failure of the government to impose lockdowns to stop the coronavirus outbreak, Rouhani boasted that he has done well in the face of US sanctions. He says that the country is facing the worst pressure it has faced since 2009. Left without major oil trade, the country has survived, he argued. “The economic trend has been positive,” he said in his message, adding that the government increased salaries by four percent. It’s not clear if that is helpful in the face of inflation.

Iran also responded well to flooding over the last year, he said. He mentioned that the nuclear industry in Iran is proceeding along schedule. Tehran has been increasing uranium enrichment after the US walked away from the JCPOA (the “Iran deal”) in 2018.

Rouhani says that Iran conducted a strong response to the US killing of IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani. He was killed Soleimani after attacks on US soldiers in Iraq and after an attack on the US embassy last year. Iran responded with ballistic missiles, fired at Ayn al-Assad base in Iraq. Although around 100 Americans suffered concussions, Washington has now sent Patriot defense systems to Iraq. It is unclear if Iran’s strike has had much impact on the US.

The Iranian president says, however, that America will “never forget the attack on the US base.” He says that Iran has responded to the US. “I think the Americans will never forget, because it was the first time in the region” that they were struck in this way.

Rouhani asserts that the Islamic Republic has given the US a “slap in the face” in response to its sanctions. Iran has embarked on infrastructure projects and it is surviving in the face of the maximum pressure campaign.

He also claims that in Qom and Gilan provinces, the coronavirus has peaked and Iran is doing everything correctly to fight the virus. Meanwhile Press TV and other Iranian channels continue to push conspiracies alleging that the US is behind the virus and that it is a kind of “biological war.” In addition, Iranian members of the security council, such as Ali Shamkhani, along with members of the foreign ministry continue to beg European powers for help to get around US sanctions. They have claimed that the sanctions prevent Iran from fighting the virus. The comments by Iran’s own foreign ministry and officials are thus in contrast to Rouhani’s boasting. Tehran has been brought low by the coronavirus – and worse is likely to come. Experts assert that Iran is downplaying the numbers infected and that many thousands may be dead, in contrast to the 988 who were listed as deceased on March 17 due to the virus. Iranian religious fanatics have broken into shrines that the government sought to close to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Supreme Leader has said the struggle with the virus is a war and those on the front line, like nurses, are “martyrs.” This is a  kind of apocalyptic vision that is not in line with Rouhani’s claim that reasonable diligence was employed by the government. It is not clear how much control he even has anymore, as the army and IRGC have sought to send troops into the streets to fight what they call a “biological war” against the virus.

Rouhani may be as out of touch with reality as clerics in Qom who are sick with the virus, one believing that heaven up above will save them, the other believing falsely that they have created heaven here on earth – with policies that are more imagination than reality.

Iran reports 147 new deaths in largest single-day spike

March 18, 2020

Iran has reported its single biggest jump in deaths from the new coronavirus, saying that another 147 had died in a nearly 15% spike that raises the death toll to 1,135 people nationwide.

It marks the biggest 24-hour rise in deaths since officials first acknowledged cases of the virus in Iran in mid-February. The rise in deaths comes as the number of cases continues to grow each day, with some 17,361 people having been infection nationwide, accordin

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has instructed the Israel Police to prepare for a complete lockdown of the country, calling such a move “inevitable,” according to Hebrew media reports Wednesday morning.

According to the reports, Erdan held a conference call Tuesday night with the chief of police and heads of other security agencies, following the latest update to guidelines issued by the Health Ministry to stem of the growing number of Israelis infected with the new coronavirus.

“I am convinced that in view of the situation that has arisen, this is an inevitable decision that will save many lives,” Erdan reportedly said.

The public security minister was said to have requested that police and security chiefs urgently prepare and present to him a detailed plan for implementing a countrywide lockdown, in which only essential workers will be allowed to leave their homes, while other citizens will only be allowed out in order to buy supplies and for medical treatment. If a lockdown is ordered, police will be placed in charge of enforcement, while the IDF Home Front Command will be in charge of the supply of essential items.

Erdan reportedly told participants in the conference call that while a decision to impose a complete lockdown would be a very difficult one, in the current situation it is preferable to take tough measures for a short time in order to defeat the coronavirus quickly and prevent deaths.

The Health Ministry introduced sweeping new restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus on Tuesday, instructing Israelis not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary, but stopping short of imposing a mandatory lockdown.

Health Ministry Director General Moshe Bar Siman-Tov warned following the new directives that thousands of Israelis could die of the virus if anti-contagion measures were not adhered to.

“We assess that scenarios like in Italy and Spain can happen here too,” Bar Siman-Tov said. “In the coming days… the rate of new cases will rise — to 100 a day or more. We may come to a situation of hundreds more [cases] each day,” he said.

In the end, he said, “people will die — possibly even in the next few days.”

“Unfortunately, in scenarios we have, many thousands [of Israelis] could die,” he warned.

Cleric close to Khamenei wants Iranians to widely infect the world with Covid-19 to help bring about the Mahdi messiah

March 18, 2020

Sick bastards.

A prominent hardline Iranian cleric, Ali Reza Banahyan, called on the Iranians to spread the coronavirus to speed up the emergence of the expected Mahdi, the messianic figure in Shiite Islam.

Banahyan said that the outbreak of the virus is a sign of the emergence of the Mahdi, which Shiites believe will emerge at the end of time.

Banahyan is close to the guide the Ayatollah Khamenei, according to the local Tasnim News Agency.

The cleric added that the world before the emergence of the Mahdi will suffer from widespread fears and many economic problems and deaths, and people will need a religious government led by the Imam Mahdi.

Is it really so outrageous to think that people who bankroll suicide bombings all the time against their enemies would not send people infected with the coronavirus to different parts of the world?

I always find it fascinating that the people who are scared as hell of, say, Mike Pence for his fundamentalist Christian beliefs never seem to show much worry about a wannabe nuclear superpower that believes that widespread deaths are a good thing to help bring about the end of the world.

Israel expands lockdown amid forecast of 10,000-coronavirus victims. Idle hotels turn into quarantine hospitals – DEBKAfile

More population groups will be confined to their homes in the expanded lockdown announced by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday night, March 16 after the number of coronavirus victims rose to 277.

Health Ministry director Moshe Bar Simantov warned that the rate of infections was gaining momentum and doubling itself at high speed. If Israel fails to declare a total lockdown on the country, he warned that the number of covid-19 cases forecast will reach 10,000 in 10 days to two weeks.

The IDF has been enlisted for the first time to help deal with the emergency. The Homeland Defense Command has taken over hotels in the main cities – idle for lack of tourists – for use as centers for the treatment of quarantined coronavirus patients to ease the burden on the hospitals.

While abstaining from a comprehensive national lockdown at this time, the prime minister nonetheless announced more steps in addition to the stringent restrictions already in place.

Economic activity already reduced will be shrink further by placing the public sector on emergency footing. Most of the work force in government ministries is to be put on unpaid leave until after the Passover holiday. Public institutions including banks will cut down on staff at their desks and public transport scaled down. This latest package is in effect a compromise between the demands of the health authorities and the determination by the ministry of finance that the economy cannot withstand a complete lockdown. Furthermore, digital surveillance of confirmed cases will be in force for 30 days.

The crisis took another sharp turn on Monday with a flood of complaints from hospitals and medical institutions of a severe shortage of equipment for coping with the disease, and lack of protective gear for medical staff.

The number of Israelis infected by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, rose Tuesday morning by six people to 304, according to the Health Ministry.

Among the infected are three people who work in the Central Laboratory for Detecting Coronavirus of the Ministry of Health at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. On Monday, the lab was shut down because its deputy director-general became infected. The new diagnoses include two additional staff members, Kan news reported.

There are four patients in critical condition, 11 in moderate and 284 that have mild cases of the virus, according to the ministry report.

So far, five Israelis have become infected with but recovered from COVID-19.

Some 223 people are hospitalized, 15 are in the check-in process and will be hospitalized by the end of the day, and 46 patients are being treated in home-isolation.

On Sunday night, a senior doctor at Ichilov Hospital was reported by Ynet to have contracted the virus. All of the patients in her unit – many of them senior citizens – had to be tested and transferred to another unit, and her staff was sent home to self-isolate. The next morning, an intern in the hospital’s urology department also tested positive for coronavirus.

In addition, the IDF confirmed that patient No. 273 is a 19-year-old soldier from the north of the country. She is in mild condition. The IDF Medical Corps. and the Ministry of Health are together conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation and will share that information soon.

MK Tzachi Hanegbi refrained from attending the Knesset swearing in ceremony on Monday because he feared he had been in contact with someone who might have coronavirus. Hanegbi is waiting for the individual’s test results. In the interim, he is self-isolating.

Further more, a report disseminated by Hadassh Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem shared that the condition of an 89-year-old woman who was infected with coronavirus deteriorated overnight and she is considered critical condition.

So far, Israel has not had any person die from the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to roll out new restrictions on the public to help stop the spread of the virus across the country. Most of the new instructions presented Monday night will impact the public and private business sectors.

COVID-19 cases in Israel jump to 298; nearly 1/4 showed no symptoms

The Health Ministry on Monday night said the number of COVID-19 cases in Israel has climbed to 298, as data shared by the authorities showed that one-quarter of those infected by the coronavirus showed no symptoms.

Four of the cases were in serious condition and nine were showing moderate symptoms.

The data, based on 250 confirmed cases in Israel, underlined that 59 (24 percent) were asymptomatic upon diagnosis, 66 (26%) experienced respiratory symptoms, but no fever, while 41 (16%) ran a fever, but had no breathing difficulties or cough.

A plurality (74 cases, 29%), though still under one-third, had both a fever and respiratory symptoms — the conditions under which Israel’s emergency services are most likely to grant a COVID-19 test to those who have not returned from abroad or been in direct contact with someone infected. The symptoms in 11 other cases were classified as “unknown.”

The ministry did not specify how those who were asymptomatic were identified as carrying the virus, but health authorities have been testing those exposed to confirmed cases.

According to the Health Ministry figures, most of those carrying the virus had recently returned from abroad, though spread within Israel was catching up (98 cases).

The country with the largest numbers of Israeli travelers who were later diagnosed with COVID-19 was Spain, with 21 cases. Sixteen had recently returned from Italy and Austria, respectively, followed by 14 who came from France. Twelve of the cases had entered Israel from the United States, and another dozen from the United Kingdom. Eight each of those sick with the coronavirus had returned from Germany and Egypt.

Israel also saw two cases each among recent travelers to the Netherlands and Bulgaria, and a single case each from Belgium, Azerbaijan, Tunis, Japan, Malta, and Denmark.

Another 26 cases are still under investigation, the ministry said.

A plurality of those confirmed to be carrying the virus are in their 30s (23%), with the next common age group those in their 40s (18%) and their 20s (13%). Children and teenagers accounted for just 10% of the infections.

Some 22% of those who have fallen ill are over 60 (12% between 60 and 69; 10% over 70).

Over 50,000 Israelis are currently in quarantine.

The Health Ministry said earlier that it was considering dramatically increasing its restrictions on movement in a bid to further slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“We may ask people to leave the house less, and only for necessary errands. The government is considering a general closure on all citizens, and if that happens it would mean all age groups will be asked to stay home until further notice,” the ministry’s deputy director general, Itamar Grotto, said Monday.

On Saturday, the government announced the latest wave of restrictions, saying all educational institutions would be shuttered and gatherings limited to no more than 10 people at any one time.

On Sunday, all “non-essential” businesses, including malls, restaurants, and most stores, were shut down.

IDF indicates Iran scaling back terror activity in light of coronavirus

Military says it is seeing decrease in terrorist activities across the Middle East as countries instead fight pandemic

The Israel Defense Forces indicated Monday its primary foe in the region, Iran, was curbing its activities as it grapples with a major outbreak of the coronavirus.

IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman told reporters that the military noted a decrease in the amount of activity in the region by Israel’s enemies, without specifically naming Iran.

“There are countries who have gotten it way worse than us with this corona[virus] story, and as a result their activities are at a slower pace,” Zilberman said.

Iran is among the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus, with hundreds of people reported killed, including a senior cleric on Monday, and at least another 14,000 people infected with the disease.

The real numbers may be even higher, as some have questioned the government’s reporting.

Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, Revolutionary Guard members and Health Ministry officials have been infected, compounding fears about Iran’s response to the global pandemic, which has infected nearly 170,000 people worldwide and killed more than 6,500.

Iran is widely considered Israel’s main enemy in the region, controlling and funding terror groups across the Middle East, notably the powerful Hezbollah terrorist militia in Lebanon.

In recent years, Tehran has worked to establish a permanent military presence to Israel’s north in Syria, both for its own forces and for proxy militias. Israel has stated that it will not tolerate this effort and has launched hundreds of airstrikes against Iranian and Iranian-backed forces in Syria.
