Trump gave Merkel $370 billion ‘invoice’ for NATO debt

When German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Washington on March 17, US President Donald Trump reportedly handed her a bill for money he thinks Germany owes NATO.

Trump had the invoice, reportedly for £300 billion ($374 billion, or NIS 1.36 trillion), drawn up by aides for a shortfall in Germany’s NATO contributions going back to 2002, with interest added. He reportedly handed it to Merkel during a private meeting between the two.

Germany, along with all NATO countries, agreed in 2014 to spend two percent of its GPD on defense. However, of the 28 countries that make up the organization only a few, including the US and UK, spend that amount. Germany currently spends 1.23% of its GDP on defense, although that percentage is increasing.

Trump asked his aides to calculate Germany’s shortfall below 2%, going back to 2002 when then-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder pledged to increase his country’s defense spending, The Sunday Times reported.

After meeting Merkel the president reaffirmed the United States’ “strong support” for NATO, but reiterated his stance that NATO allies need to “pay their fair share” for the cost of defense. Trump said many countries owe “vast sums of money,” though he didn’t identify Germany specifically as one of those nations.

A German government minister responded to the invoice, saying that Merkel was not intimidated by it.

“The concept behind putting out such demands is to intimidate the other side,” the unnamed minister said, “but the Chancellor took it calmly and will not respond to such provocations.”

Another source close to Merkel implied that Trump was confused about the workings of NATO.

“The president has a very unorthodox view on NATO defense spending,” the source told the Times. “The alliance is not a club with a membership fee. The commitments relate to countries’ investment in their defense budgets.”

Even before winning the Republican nomination, Trump questioned whether European countries were paying their share for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, threatening to withhold US support.

In his first interview after winning the nomination, in July 2016, Trump doubled down on his warning that the US might not meet its mutual defense obligations in NATO under his presidency — if he deemed that a member state was not pulling its weight financially.

After his meeting with Merkel, Trump tweeted that Germany owed vast sums of money to the US for defense.

“Despite what you have heard from the FAKE NEWS, I had a GREAT meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel,” he tweeted. “Nevertheless, Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

However, Ivo Daalder, a former US ambassador to NATO, tweeted that the president didn’t understand “how NATO works.” He said that no country owes the US any money for NATO. Instead, the commitment was for each country to spend 2% on its own defense budget, to be spent on its own military.

“Sorry, Mr. President, that’s not how NATO works. The US decides for itself how much it contributes to defending NATO,” he tweeted. “All NATO countries, including Germany, have committed to spend 2% of GDP on defense by 2024.

“So far 5 of 28 NATO countries do. Those who currently don’t spend 2% of their GDP on defense are now increasing their defense budgets. That’s a good thing. But no funds will be paid to the US. They are meant to increase NATO’s overall defense capabilities, given the growing Russian threat.”

Prior to his inauguration, Trump declared NATO “obsolete” but has since modified his stance, telling European leaders the alliance remains of strategic importance.

Blue State Blues: At United Nations, Clinton Gives Trump Golden Opportunity

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton plans to mingle with foreign leaders at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly next week. Her goal is to use the UN as a backdrop to display her foreign policy credentials, and contrast her experience with that of Republican rival Donald Trump.

Perhaps Clinton hopes to undo Trump’s successful visit to the president of Mexico last month. However, by associating herself with the UN, she has given Trump a golden opportunity.

The UN is a corrupt and destructive institution that Americans do not trust — for good reason. A recent Gallup poll showed that 54% of Americans think the UN does a poor job, while only 38% think it does a good job.

Over the past eight years, the Obama administration has actually used the UN to undermine America’s influence, interests and image in the service of his own radical left-wing agenda — and as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton participated wholeheartedly in that sorry effort.

Over and over again, for example, President Barack Obama took crucial national security decisions to the UN Security Council before approaching Congress.

In 2011, with Secretary Clinton’s full backing, Obama committed the U.S. to war in Libya on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 1973. He never went to Congress for approval, in defiance of the War Powers Resolution. The result was a poorly conceived intervention, with terrorist consequences the world is still suffering.

In 2015, Obama did it again, approaching the UN Security Council to approve the Iran deal before Congress had any chance to review it. He did so even after signing the Iran Nuclear Review Agreement Act, which was advertised to the public as a guarantee that Congress would have the final say. In the end, Obama defied that law and the disastrous Iran deal — including a side deal giving the regime a ransom of $1.7 billion in cold, hard cash for American captives — was forced down our throats.

Then there is the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), a club for the world’s worst human rights abusers, which President George W. Bush wisely avoided, but which Obama enthusiastically forced the U.S. to join. The UNHRC exists for only one purpose, which is to let dictators cover up real human rights abuses by attacking Israel and the U.S. Disgracefully, Obama reported his own country to the UNHRC, allowing Iran the opportunity to bash the U.S. for so-called human rights abuses.

Now, the Obama administration is running for a seat again on the UNHRC, which will hold its elections next month. His goal is to bind the next president to a three-year term, so that the U.S. has to participate again in that charade no matter who wins.

In addition, on Oct. 1, the Obama administration intends to give up control of the Internet, when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) becomes a multilateral institution, rather than an American one. Control of ICANN will likely fall, eventually, to the UN and its International Telecommunications Union (ITU). There, the free speech and free enterprise Americans have taken for granted online could be subject to the whims of tyrannical, censorship-prone regimes.

There is no reason to give up control of the Internet, which has flourished as a free medium only because it has been protected by the guarantees of the U.S. Constitution. The Obama administration simply believes, as one critic observes, that American power is more dangerous than our enemies: better for the UN to govern Americans than for Americans to govern anyone else.

Of course, when it wants to, the Obama administration can see the problems with the U.N. In 2013, when Obama was pushing for limited war in Syria — again without obtaining congressional approval — UN Ambassador Samantha Power blasted the UN, complaining it was “structurally impossible to get meaningful international action through the Security Council.”

In the end, the Obama administration retreated anyway and did nothing to stop the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Trump — who already demonstrated in Mexico City his ability to represent the U.S. on the international stage — can seize the opportunity of Clinton’s UN photo-op to articulate three key policy differences:

1. A Trump administration will never submit the national security of the United States to the UN before Congress.

2. A Trump administration will refuse to participate in the UN Human Rights Council.

3. A Trump administration will not fund UN institutions that demonize America and Israel.

4. A Trump administration will refuse to cede control of ICANN, and will protect free speech and free enterprise on the Internet.

And when Hillary Clinton parades herself in front of the UN next week, Trump should thank her. There is nothing that better illustrates the contrast between “globalism” and “nationalism” than the UN and the way Obama and Clinton have boosted it.

Donald Trump responded to an anti-Israel questioner at his New Hampshire rally Thursday by saying he had Israel’s back “100 percent” and encouraging the rest of his crowd to cheer the Jewish state.

An elderly man took the microphone during the question-and-answer section of the event and told Trump he had two points to make.

“Number one, I’m opposed to the murder of unborn babies being legal,” he said. “Number two, I’m opposed to our wasting our military in the Middle East on behalf of Zionist Israel. Thank you.”

The crowd murmured uncomfortably.

“Well, let me just tell you Israel is a very, very important ally of the United States, and we are going to protect them 100 percent. 100 percent,” Trump said, to cheers from the rest of the audience. “They’ve been our most reliable—it’s our true friend over there, and we’re going to protect Israel 100 percent. As to number one, we’re with you.”

Trump said he wanted to get one more questions from the audience after his answer.

“We’ve got to ask one more, because that was a tough question on Israel,” he said. “That was nasty. Whoa! Are we all for Israel, right?”

The rest of the crowd again roared their approval.

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the US presidency, has a troubling history of questionable behavior around women in both private and professional settings, according to a new report.

An article in the New York Times published Saturday, based on more than 50 interviews with persons male and female who have interacted with the billionaire businessman socially or worked with him, reveals a pattern of often inappropriate behavior on the part of the presidential candidate.

“Unwelcome romantic advances, unending commentary of the female form, a shrewd reliance on ambitious women and unsettling workplace conduct” seem to have been part and parcel of Trump’s behavior over the past four decades, according to the report.

The incidents in question occurred at Trump Tower, on construction sites, at parties, at his home or backstage at beauty pageants once he bought the Miss Universe Organization.

The profile in the Times also details his encouragement of some women in their career path, and his promotion of some to very senior positions within his businesses.

When asked by the Times about the unflattering incidents, the billionaire candidate either denied they took place or took issue with the details.

“A lot of things get made up over the years,” Trump told the Times. “I have always treated women with great respect.”

A high-level executive who worked for Trump for 12 years recalled the night he told her he wanted to promote her to oversee the construction on Trump Tower.

According to Barbara Res, she was taken to Trump’s home, where he told her he wanted her to be his “Donna Trump” on the project at a time where few women held such positions.

“He said: You’re a woman in a man’s world. And while men tend to be better than women, a good woman is better than 10 good men. He thought he was complimenting me,” Res told the Times.

In another incident, Res describes Trump’s apropos-of-nothing comment on women from southern California during a business meeting.

“They take care of their asses,” she recalled him saying.

Res also said that he commented on her weight gain at one point, telling her, “you like your candy.”

A Miss Universe winner told the Times that she felt bullied and humiliated by Trump after gaining weight following her victory.

Still others said Trump was genuinely interested in helping them.

“I think there are mischaracterizations about him,” Jill Martin, assistant counsel at the Trump Organization, told the Times. “For me, he’s made it a situation where I can really excel at my job and still devote the time necessary for my family.”

Another beauty pageant contestant said Trump followed through on promises to provide contacts for career advancements.

On and off the campaign trail, Trump has used crass and abusive language — “bimbo,” “dog,” “fat pig” and other epithets — to denigrate women he dislikes, including Fox News’s Megyn Kelly.

The twice-divorced billionaire, who was celebrated for decades as one of New York’s most sought-after bachelors, has also admitted to cheating on his first wife with the woman who became his second.

London’s New Mayor Warns Trump: Let In Muslims Or They Will Attack America

The new Muslim mayor of London has issued a warning to Donald Trump: Moderate your stance on Muslims, or they will launch more attacks against America.

Trump recently praised Sadiq Khan for winning London’s mayoral race, and said he would be willing to create an exception in his policy restricting Muslim entry into the United States in order to allow Khan to visit. But in a statement Tuesday, Khan dismissed Trump’s invitation, and also denounced his views on Islam as “ignorant,” suggesting Trump’s policies would increase the terrorist threat in both the U.S. and

U.K. (RELATED: Khan Rejects Trump’s Invitation, Endorses Hillary)

“Donald Trump’s ignorant view of Islam could make both of our countries less safe – it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around the world and plays into the hands of extremists,” he said. “Donald Trump and those around him think that Western liberal values are incompatible with mainstream Islam – London has proved him wrong.”

While Khan touted the liberal values of British Muslims, some polls have found worrying indicators that their assimilation is incomplete. A poll in April, for instance, found that two-thirds of British Muslims would not tell the government if a friend or family member became involved with extremists. Half of them said homosexuality should be illegal and over 20 percent supported establishing sharia in the U.K.

Clinton Cash’ rears its head again, just as Hillary is getting a leg up over Bernie – and now the the harsh expose of political payback is being turned into a movie showing at the Cannes film festival

  • Movie will be in theaters this summer just as Republicans are cranking up attacks on leading Democrat to try to keep her out of the White House
  • Trailer features blood-stained cash and accusations of favor-trading
  • Features reporting from author Peter Schweitzer, who rocked Clinton’s primary campaign with deep dive into odiferous practices
  • Clinton already had to weather another embarrassing film about former Rep Anthony Weiner that featured her longtime aide Huma Abedin

The book that raked through the complex web of political, campaign fundraising, and political practices of Bill and Hillary Clinton last year and muddied Clinton’s presidential campaign launch is coming to the big screen just in time to cause Clinton trouble in the general election.

‘Clinton Cash’ is set to premiere the day before the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, and is based on the book by the same title by author Peter Schweizer.

Schweizer is joined by fellow producer Stephan K. Bannon of conservative outlet Breitbart news on the project.

A trailer for the film, which is directed by M.A. Taylor., features images of blood dripping down piles of cash, Bloomberg News reported.

The film takes the tone of the book, which claims cash given to the Clintons was part of a 'transaction'

Fire drill! Clinton's campaign had to contend with an array of media probes after the book's 2015 release

Bad timing: the US premiere comes just as Clinton would try to sell herself to the American people

After showing at Cannes, the film will get its U.S. in Philadelphia on July 24, the day before the Democratic Convention in the same city, Bannon told Bloomberg. In August, just as Democrats are set to take their campaign on the road, the film is set for limited release in New York, LA, Chicago, and San Francisco.

The Clintons have weathered unfavorable Hollywood treatment before. Last November, Michael Bay’s film ’13 Hours’ depicted failed leadership in DC leading up to the 2012 Benghazi attacks. The film ‘Weiner’ shows longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her husband contending with a sexting scandal during Weiner’s campaign for mayor of New York in 2013.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stated that he sees Israel as the victim in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and he would “100%” come to its defense if it was attacked in an interview broadcast on Monday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel.

Trump was asked about his comments that he would be “neutral” in the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and whether he sees “that Israel is the victim in this?” Trump said that he does and that he’s “a great friend of Israel.”

He added that making a deal between Israel and Palestine would be “the ultimate deal” if it was possible, and “I have been told by people, very high level people, it’s impossible, because the hatred, especially on the one side, I won’t even say which side –”

After host Sean Hannity cut in with, “On the Palestinian side.” Trump continued, “is so intense. It’s so incredible, and from the time they’re 2 years old they’re told to hate, to hate, to hate. It’s got to be taken away.”

Trump concluded that if Israel was attacked, “100% I’d come to their defense. 100%. Now, you know that under the Iran deal… but under the Iran deal, if Israel ends up attacks Iran because they’re — they see they’re doing the nuclear, or if it’s the other way around, we have to fight with Iran. By the way, that’s not happening, folks. I don’t care. Deals are meant to be broken in some cases, all right?”

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump lambasted German Chancellor Angela Merkel for allowing thousands of migrants into Germany, saying this could be “the end of Europe.” Trump also said the US could have “very good relations” with Russia.

The real estate billionaire was speaking to the French conservative magazine Valeurs Actuelles, saying the German chancellor had made “a tragic mistake with the migrants.”

“If you don’t treat the situation competently and firmly, yes, it’s the end of Europe. You could face real revolutions,” Trump was quoted as saying, as cited by Reuters.

Merkel’s approval ratings have taken a nosedive and she has also received criticism from within her ruling coalition for her ‘open-door’ refugee and migrant policy, which saw an estimated 1.1 million asylum seekers arrive in Germany in 2015. Germany’s Economics Minister Gerd Muller stated in January that an estimated 8-10 million refugees could look to enter Europe over the coming years.

In a message that would certainly appease the influential pressure group the National Rifle Association, Trump was highly critical of France’s strict gun laws, which he says played a part in the killing of dozens of people at the Bataclan Theater on November 13 by Islamist militant gunmen.

“I always have a gun with me. Had I been at the Bataclan, I can tell you I would have opened fire,” he said.

Continuing his anti-migrant theme, the 69-year-old mentioned that some neighborhoods in Paris had become no-go areas, while the Belgian capital, Brussels, had become “a breeding ground for terrorists.”

In December, Trump suggested that all Muslims should barred entry into the US until the authorities “figure out what’s going on here” in the wake of the San Bernardino shootings in California on December 2, which killed 16 people.

However, the Republican presidential contender had kinder words concerning ties with Russia, with Trump saying that Washington could have very good relations with President Vladimir Putin. He also noted that nothing could be worse than the present situation where President Barack Obama and Putin hardly speak with one another.

“[Putin] said I was brilliant. That proves a certain smartness,” said Trump.

Putin praised Trump during his traditional end of the year Question and Answer session with journalists on December 17. He described the property tycoon as the “absolute front-runner in the presidential race.” However, he mentioned that he would be ready to work with whoever becomes the next US president.

“He is a very flamboyant man, very talented, no doubt about that… He is the absolute leader of the presidential race, as we see it today. He says that he wants to move to another level of relations, to a deeper level of relations with Russia. How can we not welcome that? Of course we welcome it,” Putin said.

Trump responded by saying it was a “great honor” to receive praise from a “highly-respected” leader like Putin, while adding that if he is elected as the new US president, he would like to work with Russia.

“I have always felt that Russia and the United States should be able to work well with each other towards defeating terrorism and restoring world peace, not to mention trade and all of the other benefits derived from mutual respect,” he reiterated on December 18.
