Why Abbas Will Not Condemn Terror Attacks

Why Abbas Will Not Condemn Terror Attacks, Gatestone InstituteKhaled Abu Toameh, November 12, 2014

(Please see also Palestinian song glorifies terror trend of driving into crowds. Thank you, Secretary Kerry, for helping Israel refrain from committing national suicide. — DM)

Secretary of State Kerry’s “peace process” actually put Israelis and Palestinians on a new collision course.

Not a single Palestinian Authority official has denounced the wave of terror attacks on Israel. They, too, are afraid of being condemned by their people for denouncing “heroic operations” such as ramming a car into a three-month old infant.

Kerry and other Western leaders do not want to understand that Abbas is not authorized to make any concessions for peace with Israel. For Abbas, it is more convenient to be criticized by the U.S. and Israel than to be denounced by his own people. Ignoring these facts, Kerry tried to pressure Abbas into making concessions that would have turned the Palestinian Authority president into a “traitor” in the eyes of his people. Abbas knows that the people he has radicalized would turn against him if he dared to speak out against the killing of Jews.

The recent spate of terror attacks in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the West Bank did not come as a surprise to those who have been following the ongoing incitement campaign waged by Palestinians against Israel.

This campaign escalated immediately after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s last failed “peace process” between Israel and the Palestinians. Kerry’s “peace process” actually put Israelis and Palestinians on a new collision course, which reached its peak with the recent terror attacks on Israelis.

Kerry failed to acknowledge that Palestinian Authority [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas does not have a mandate from his people to negotiate, let alone sign, any agreement with Israel. Abbas is now in the tenth year of his four-year term in office.

Nor did Kerry listen to the advice of those who warned him and his aides that Abbas would not be able to implement any agreement with Israel on the ground. Abbas cannot even visit his private house in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and he controls less than 40% of the West Bank. Where exactly did Kerry expect Abbas to implement any agreement with Israel? In the city-center of Ramallah or Nablus?

What Kerry and other Western leaders do not want to understand is that Abbas is not authorized to make any concessions for peace with Israel, and has even repeatedly promised his people that he would not make any concessions for the sake of peace with Israel.

In a speech in Ramallah on November 11, marking the tenth anniversary of the death of his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, Abbas declared: “He who surrenders one grain of the soil of Palestine and Jerusalem is not one of us.”

This statement alone should be enough for Kerry and Western leaders to realize that it would be impossible to ask Abbas to make any concessions. Like Arafat, Abbas has become hostage to his own rhetoric. How can Abbas be expected to accept any deal that does not include 100% of his demands — in this instance, all territory captured by Israel in 1967?

Abbas himself knows that if he comes back with 97% or 98% of his demands, his people will either spit in is face or kill him, after accusing him of being a “defeatist” and “relinquishing Palestinian rights.”

This is precisely why Abbas chose to walk out of Kerry’s nine-month “peace process.” Realizing that Israel was not going to offer him 100% of his demands, Abbas preferred to abandon the peace talks last summer.

For Abbas, it is more convenient to be criticized by the U.S. and Israel than to be denounced by his own people for achieving a bad deal with Israel.

Ignoring these facts, Kerry tried to pressure Abbas into making concessions that would have turned the Palestinian Authority president into a “traitor” in the eyes of his people.

Instead of being honest with his people and telling them that peace requires painful concessions also on the part of Palestinians, and not only Israel, Abbas has chosen — ever since the collapse of Kerry’s “peace process” — to incite Palestinians against Israel.

Abbas has since held Israel responsible for the collapse of Kerry’s effort. Abbas has used both the media and fiery rhetoric to tell his people that there is no peace partner in Israel. He has also been telling his people that Israel’s only goal is to seize lands and carry out “ethnic cleansing”and “genocide” against Palestinians.

Abbas’s recent charges that Jewish settlers and extremists are “contaminating” the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem need to be seen in the context of the massive incitement campaign that escalated in the aftermath of the failure of Kerry’s “peace process.”

During the past few months, Abbas, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have radicalized Palestinians to a point where it has become laughable even to talk about any peace process with Israel.

Abbas is well aware that his people will condemn him if he ever returns to the negotiating table with Israel. That is why he has now chosen a different strategy — to try to impose a solution with the help of the United Nations and the international community.

Abbas wants the international community and UN Security Council to give him what Israel cannot and will not offer him at the negotiating table.

The incitement campaign against Israel is reminiscent of the atmosphere that prevailed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip immediately after the botched Camp David summit in the summer of 2000. Then, Yasser Arafat also walked away from the table after realizing that Israel was not offering him all that he was asking for, namely a full withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines.

Upon his return from Camp David, Arafat also unleashed a wave of incitement against Israel; eventually the incitement led to the eruption of the second intifada in September 2000.

Now Abbas is following in the footsteps of Arafat by stepping up his rhetorical attacks on Israel. This time, Hamas and other terror groups have joined Abbas’s incitement campaign by openly calling on Palestinians to use cars and knives to kill Jews in order to “defend” the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Abbas’s refusal to condemn the recent terror attacks on Israel may be attributed to two motives: fear of his people, and the belief that violence will force Israel to make far-reaching concessions. By refusing to denounce the attacks, and even praising the perpetrators as heroes and martyrs (as he did in the case of Mu’taz Hijazi, the east Jerusalem man who shot and wounded Jewish activist Rabbi Yehuda Glick), Abbas is indicating his tacit approval of the violence.

Not a single Palestinian Authority official, in fact, has denounced the wave of terror attacks on Israel. They, too, are afraid of being condemned by their people for denouncing “heroic operations” such as the stabbing murder of a 26-year-old woman or ramming a car into a three-month-old infant.

791Victims of what official Palestinian Authority media organs call “heroic operations”: Left, Dalia Lamkus, 26, run over and then stabbed to death by a terrorist on Nov. 10. Right: Three-month-old Chaya Zissel Braun, murdered on Oct. 23 when a terrorist rammed a car into her stroller. Several other victims were killed or injured in these attacks.

Abbas is hoping that the terror attacks will keep the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the top of the world’s agenda at a time when all eyes are turned toward the threat of the Islamic State terror group in Syria and Iraq. He also knows very well that the people he has radicalized would turn against him if he dared to speak out against the killing of Jews.

There's no way this can go wrong

In all fairness, that’s true of some Swedish cities as well these days now that they’ve been properly enriched by Muslim immigration.

Still let’s look at the absurdity of recognizing a Palestinian State.

1. The Palestinian Authority refuses to hold elections because the last time it held them, its leaders got walloped by Hamas. Abbas is treated as the President despite refusing to stand for office. There can be no legislature without seating Hamas so the legislative powers have in practice devolved to the PLO, which is not only a terrorist group but not elected by the general public.

Sweden didn’t recognize an elected government. It recognized the leadership of a terrorist group.

2. The Palestinian Authority doesn’t actually control the territory it claims encompasses its state. Let’s set aside the question of Israel. Ever since the last set of elections and the civil war and the Hamas takeover of Gaza, the Palestinian Authority doesn’t actually control Gaza.

The latest unity government was an attempt at sidestepping that question, but the fact remains that the PLO controls its population in the West Bank and Hamas controls Gaza. Sweden has recognized an unelected terrorist group’s control over territory which it doesn’t control.

It might as well recognize ISIS as the official government of Malmo. That would be closer to the truth.

 3. The PLO’s Palestinian State would exist for roughly five seconds without foreign aid. Its economy consists of the UNRWA and other foreign aid. Its chief employers are the Palestinian Authority and the UNRWA.

Not only is it unelected and not control of its own territory, but its funded by foreign interests. If it had to function as a state, it would die tomorrow. Not only doesn’t it have the infrastructure, but it doesn’t even have the economy.

So Sweden recognized the unelected government of a bankrupt terror state that can’t function as a state or a government because… that’s how much its new leftist leaders hate Israel and Jews.

There’s no rational reason for extending state recognition to an entity that fails the test of functioning as a state at every level from the economy to elections to simple territorial control.

But fair is fair.

I recognize Lars Vilks as the President of Ladonia.

Kerry Says Lack of Israeli-PA Peace Fuels Islamic Terror Recruitment

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Muslims Thursday night that the absence of peace between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is “a cause of recruitment and of street anger and agitation.”

He told a reception in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that the anger “has something to do with humiliation and denial and absence of dignity.”

This is not satire. This is real. This is actually what was declared by Kerry, former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and now the Secretary of State of the United States of America.

It would be funny if it were not true, but it certainly is sad when an intelligent person plays the role of idiot and connects dots that create a maze without an escape route by manufacturing the Arab world’s demands on Israel as the cause of all problems in the world, except for Ebola – so far.

The Muslim holiday reception was hosted by Shaarik Zafar, whom Kerry appointed last month as Special Representative to Muslim Communities. That was just after the Islamic State ISIS murderers hanged its first American victim, journalist James Foley. Kerry’s response at the installation ceremony of Zafar was, “The real face of Islam is a peaceful religion based on the dignity of all human beings.”

That is the premise for the twisted path that ends with the finger of blame for Muslim violence at the doorstep of Israel. The Obama administration is careful to not to single out Israel for the failure of talks but simply says so in a twisted way by damning every one of nearly 350,000 Jews in Jerusalem neighborhoods as “illegitimate’ and “illegal,” just like an equal number in Judea and Samaria.

Kerry began his speech by praising the “terrific $5.4 billion” raised in Cairo this week to rebuild Gaza. He did not mention that Hamas, which runs Gaza, has not agreed to disarm and has actually bragged that it is continuing to manufacture rockets to restore the stockpile lose in the recent war.

Once again, the Obama administration has ignored Israel’s insistence that there can be no peace with a terrorist organization that does not disavow its stated goal of destroying Israel.

Instead, the key is “negotiations,” a term which Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas has successfully turned into “ultimatum.”

No peace in Gaza? No problem. Kerry said last night, “It is imperative that we find a way to get back to the negotiations for what everybody knows is, in the end, the only way to go forward that makes sense.”

And that is where his “Special Representative to Muslim Communities comes into play.

“We have the first faith-based office,” Kerry stated. “We have the office reaching out to the Islamic world. And when he started drafting our national strategic approach as a leader of a faith community, he began that strategy with two words: ‘religion matters.’”

Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and atheism never mattered in the State Dept’s 30-year goal of punishing Israel for having won the war against the Arab Muslim world in 1967, but all of a sudden religion matters because radical Islam is embarrassing to followers of Allah.

“What we’re really doing as we… celebrate Eid al-Adha is that we are celebrating sort of the meaning and importance of sacrifice and devotion in our lives,” said Pastor Kerry.

Sounding more like John Lennon than a man of individual faith, he cited the quest for “introspection and re-evaluation through Eid al-Adha and Yom Kippur.

Kerry painted a lovely picture of the world of “a young girl somewhere in New Delhi praying outside of a mosque, or kids or adults in Pakistan, girls singing songs and painting their hands with henna, or Shiites in the holy city of Najaf or fellow Shi’a celebrating Eid-e-Ghorban in Iran.”

Against this simplicity of universal unification, Kerry the sophomore whisked back to reality and pronounced, “It’s a very complex time… The extremism that we see, the radical exploitation of religion which is translated into violence, has no basis in any of the real religions. There’s nothing Islamic about what ISIL/Daesh stands for or is doing to people.”

Having ripped out half of the Koran that preaches the murder of Jews, Kerry’s next thread in his maze was demographics.

“When you have 65 percent of a country, as you do in many countries in the Middle East or South Central Asia or elsewhere, in north Horn of Africa, that are under the age of 35… and 50 percent under the age of 25, you are going to have a governance problem unless your governance is really addressing the demands and needs of that part of the population.”

This is the reason for the chaos in Syria, according to Kerry.

And how does he propose to stop the killing? It’s simple. Get Israel on the same track as the Palestinian Authority, of course.

“As I went around and met with people in the course of our discussions about the ISIL coalition, the truth is we – there wasn’t a leader I met with in the region who didn’t raise with me spontaneously the need to try to get peace between Israel and the Palestinians, because it was a cause of recruitment and of street anger and agitation that they felt – and I see a lot of heads nodding – they had to respond to. And people need to understand the connection of that. And it has something to do with humiliation and denial and absence of dignity, and Eid celebrates the opposite of all of that….

“What’s happening in Iraq is an interesting beginning of that, where Daesh has kind of drawn a line and made people stop and think, and Sunni and Shia are beginning to realize there’s a common problem out there and there is a way to try to work together.”

Kerry now can God, or perhaps Allah, for the Islamic State.

The ISIS, or ISIL as the Obama administration insist on calling it, gives Kerry another tiger’s tail to grab and continue to turn the other cheek to the incredibly complex thought that the radical Islamic theology is the root of radical Islamic violence.

On Sunday for the first time ever the readings from Quran will be heard at the Vatican. This move was initiated by the Pope Francis in order to bring peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

During his visit last week to Jordan Israel, and the Palestinian Authority, Pope Francis invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Peres’s spokesperson has announced in Times of Israel that Abbas, Peres, and Pope Francis will be joined by Jewish, Christian and Islamic religious leaders.

According to the officials, these evening prayers would be a “pause in politics” and have no political aim behind it other than the desire to bring peace and respect to the Israeli-Palestinian relations, states the Associated Press.

The Vatican will broadcast the event worldwide through the official website.

However, Rev. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the custodian of Catholic Church property in the Holy Land has announced that people should keep their expectations low when it comes to this event.

[No-one should think] “peace will suddenly break out on Monday, or that peace is any closer,” he said to AP.

The Vatican has also announced that on Friday, the Pope also held a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and both leaders discussed possible ways of promoting peace and stability in Asia.

‘Moderate’ Palestinian Authority Claims U.S. Created ISIS To Divide Muslims

Moderate’ Palestinian Authority Claims U.S. Created ISIS To Divide Muslims

he supposedly “moderate” Palestinian Authority led by President Abbas is rewarding the billions of dollars provided by this country by inciting its citizens to hate the United States, claiming America has established the radical Islamic movement Islamic State (ISIS or IS) with the long-term goal of controlling the Arab-Muslim states by dividing them through conflict and wars.

On August 7th, the official Palestinian Authority TV Station, the “Palestine News Network,” reported Fatah Central Committee Member Abbas Zaki made the claim:

Fatah Central Committee Member and Commissioner of Arab Relations and Relations with China Abbas Zaki said the Palestinian language and terminology [employed] with the Zionist enemy must be changed, as whoever has seen the extent of the destruction, the ruins and the limbs torn from the pure bodies of our people in Gaza understands the goals of the Zionist attack (i.e., Operation Protective Edge) – [namely,] to exploit the terrible situation in the Arab world that has resulted from the lack of bravery, enthusiasm and willpower among those [countries] who have made subjugation to the US their way [of life]… [The US,] whose most advanced pawns include Israel and its new creation, ISIS, whose goal is to destroy the Arab world and eliminate the Palestinian cause.

Additionally five times in the past six week the official Palestinian Authority Newspaper “Al-Hayat Al-Jadida” published an op-ed slandering America with the same claim. Below are three examples:

A July 10th Op-ed by Adli Sadeq, PLO Ambassador to India and regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, said, in part:

It is Israel that, whenever it gets bored, returns to Gaza with military aircraft to destroy homes and facilities and kill children. Where is the help, you [Hezbollah] sectarian liars who collaborate with the Persian Ayatollahs… hostile [ones], and your ilk – the CIA’s collaborators from the ISIS -who destroy revolutions and give nations a bad name?

Palestinian Youth Union General Director Muharram Barghouti wrote on July 16th:

The ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq), Islamic Front, and Al-Nusra Front (i.e., all radical Islamists) are Muslims from various countries the US is using to fight in Iraq and Syria, in order to fragment the unity of these two Arab countries…

We are now more aware that the Americans – who want to fight for their own interests using Islamic, Jewish and Christian believers – are truly the head of the snake… ISIS’s declaration that it will fight Israel only after it has finished with the infidels merely proves that ISIS in Syria and Iraq will not fight the Jewish ISIS, because the plot is the same plot, the boss is the same boss, and the goal is the same goal: to tear [apart] the Arab homeland and gain control of its resources – through the blood of others.”

Palestinian Author Ibrahim Abd Al-Majid’s op-ed on August 3rd:

This [ignorance] has peaked in [recent] years, with the radical terrorists of ISIS and those like them, who were created by Israel and the US, and are paving the way for Israel to act like them.”

PA: Benefits to Palestinian Businesses that Boycott Israel

Israel supplies the Palestinian Authority with electricity, and this is nothing new.

But this electricity has recently become a weapon against Israel.

The PA decided to boycott Israeli goods sold in the West Bank and granted numerous benefits to businessmen, including discounts on electric bills, in order to encourage them to stop selling blue and white.

First publication: the trend of boycotting Israeli products has really made its way to us, over the fence. The Palestinian Authority has called on Palestinian businessmen to boycott all goods made in Israel in exchange for economic incentives.

“Shops free of Israeli goods will be eligible for a full exemption from the business license fee for a year, as well as a 10% discount on their electric bill for six months,” said an official letter from the PA Ministry of Local Government to West Bank businessmen. It must be noted that Israel provides the PA with the electricity serving as an incentive for the shop-owners.

In another poster making the rounds on social media and the Palestinian street, the logos of Israeli companies can be seen adorning missiles with an Israeli Star of David. The poster includes a call to buy only Palestinian products.

“Objective: promote the boycott among the entire Palestinian people”

The PA used to have a law prohibiting the purchase of goods made in the settlements. Former PA prime minister Salam Fayyad was filmed burning goods produced beyond the Green Line. But this time it seems that they really have taken a step up.

Exports from Israel to the PA are valued at approximately NIS 5 billion. Food exports are estimated to be more than a fifth of this sum, which would be a difficult blow to Israeli food companies.

In the meanwhile, the Palestinian street has seen considerable cooperation with the boycott by citizens, and even private initiatives to label Israeli goods have emerged. “Our objective is to promote the principles of the boycott among the entire Palestinian people, which could economically influence the occupation’s products and factories,” said Ammar al-Zatari, one of the leaders of the boycott.

It seems that the battle over the land has become the battle over the wallet, and when the PA boycott merges with the world boycott, it seems that it will be very difficult for Israel to win this war as well.
