AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — A prominent Jordanian writer on Sunday was shot dead in front of the courthouse where he had been on trial for sharing a cartoon deemed offensive to Islam.

There were no immediate details on the identity or motive of the gunman. But a witness described the shooter, who was immediately arrested, as wearing a long grey robe and long beard characteristic of conservative Muslims. The shooting was the latest in a string of deadly security lapses in Jordan.

Police and relatives said Nahed Hattar was preparing to enter the courthouse for a hearing when the lone gunman shot him at close range.

“He was standing at a short distance of about one meter (yard) in front of Nahed on the stairs of the Supreme Court,” the witness told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, fearing repercussions.

The witness said seven shots were fired, and that Hattar was shot in the head. The official Petra News Agency said Hattar was shot three times.

Hattar, 56, was detained in August after sharing a cartoon on Facebook. The caricature depicted a bearded man in heaven, smoking and in bed with two women, asking God to bring him wine and cashews.

Relatives said the cartoon was meant to illustrate what Hattar, a secular Christian, viewed as the twisted religious views of Islamic State extremists. The post was quickly deleted after many angry responses.

Hattar was briefly detained for two weeks before he was released on bail.

Saad Hattar, a cousin, said relatives and friends of the writer apprehended the killer.

“Nahed was accompanied with two brothers and a friend when he was shot. The brothers and the friend chased the killer and caught him and handed him over to the police,” he said.

He said the family held Jordan’s prime minister, Hani al-Mulki, responsible for Nahed’s death.

“The prime minister was the first one who incited against Nahed when he ordered his arrest and put him on trial for sharing the cartoon, and that ignited the public against him and led to his killing,” Saad Hattar said.

In a statement, the family called on the government to hold accountable all those who had incited against Hattar.

“Many fanatics wrote on social media calling for his killing and lynching, and the government did nothing against them,” they said.

Jordan is a close Western ally and has been largely spared from the violence engulfing neighboring Syria and Iraq. But a series of recent attacks has raised concern about security in the kingdom.

Late last year, a Jordanian police captain opened fire on instructors at an international police training center in Jordan’s capital, killing at least five people, including two Americans, before being shot dead by security forces. In June, a suicide car bomb attack near the Syrian border killed seven Jordanian soldiers.

Hundreds of Jordanians have been sentenced to prison, are awaiting trial or are being held for questioning about links to IS. Under toughened anti-terror laws, even liking or sharing the group’s propaganda on social media can land someone a prison sentence.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – An explosion rocked central Budapest late on Saturday, injuring two police officers, Hungarian police said on Sunday.

Police have yet to identify the cause of the blast, they said in a statement. “The local and expert examination of the origins of the explosion and the review of the damage is under way,” the statement said.

The blast was next to an unused store front on a one of the busiest thoroughfares in central Budapest. Images on local news media showed a ruined doorway. Nearby windows and cars were damaged in the blast, witnesses said.

Police said there were no further injuries caused by the explosion, which occurred at 10:36 p.m. local time (2036 GMT).

A government spokesman declined to comment on whether the blast may have been a deliberate attack.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been a vocal opponent of immigration into Europe and is urging voters to reject EU quotas for resettling migrants in Hungary in a referendum next Sunday, arguing immigration increases security risks.

Hungary has seen only a trickle of migrants since it sealed its southern border with Serbia with a razor wire fence last year.

Police cordoned off a wide area around the Oktogon square in central Budapest and told residents to leave buildings nearest the blast, local media reported. The normally busy intersection was packed with witnesses, including tourists.

News web site index.hu quoted an email from an eyewitness, who said he saw a nail lodged in a taxi nearby. Photos also showed a few nails on the ground with police chalk marks around them.

“Windows on two cars passing by on the opposite side (about 20 meters) were broken,” the witness wrote. “There were several small dents in both cars. A taxi cab had a 50 millimeter nail lodged in its light.”

Hungarian Kadosa Bencsy said his first thought was that Budapest was suffering an attack along the lines of those that have hit Brussels, Paris and Nice in recent months.

“I have to say frankly that I have been fearing such a thing for a while,” he told Reuters at the scene. “The possibility is there, that anywhere in the European Union it could happen.”

The initial reports about this killer said he was “Hispanic.” From the photos of him that were released, that always seemed to be more politically correct wishful thinking than reality.

There is a Facebook page for an Arcan Cetin who lives in Oak Harbor, Washington, where the shooter was apprehended. It says that he is from Adana, Turkey.

This may not have been jihad. There is nothing on his Facebook page to suggest he was devout, or had had a conversion. If he really called out a woman’s name, maybe it was some kind of psychopathic revenge killing or something of that kind. However, in light of the Islamic jihad attack at a Minnesota mall last week, and the jihadi threat against malls in the West, the possibility that this, too, was a jihad attack cannot be dismissed out of hand.

“Arcan Cetin :5 Fast Facts You Need to Know,” Heavy, September 24, 2016:

The man accused of killing five people inside a Washington state shopping mall has been named as Arcan Cetin. Around 7 p.m. September 23, a gunman opened fire inside a Macy’s store at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington. Police describe the shooter as “darker complected” with his age estimated in the “late teens or early 20s.” The shooter fled the scene before police arrived and remains at large amid a massive manhunt. The fatal victims have been described as four females — ranking in age from a teenager to a “senior” — and one male. Their exact ages have not been released.

At a press conference Saturday morning, Lt. Chris Cammock of the Mount Vernon police said security footage captured the suspect, at first entering the mall unarmed and later entering the Macy’s store with a weapon, and police will release additional images to the public. Police said they recovered a rifle at the scene but would not disclose additional details of the weapon.

Here’s what we know so far:
1. It Was Reported That the Gunman Made Contact With Police While They Were Searching for Him

Police also released this surveillance photo of the man. One eyewitness, Joe Zavala, spoke to King 5 news. He said he was sitting outside the Macy’s store when he heard about eight or nine gunshots break out. “Then I saw a man pointing a gun and shooting people,” Zavala said to the news station. “And then I got up to look a little closer and he saw me, pointed the gun, and I took off running.” He said he saw victims – including two elderly women – lying on the floor. (Washington State Patrol)

KIRO’s Gary Horcher reported during the search that someone identifying himself as the shooter has contacted police. The shooting began just after 7 p.m. inside one of the Macy’s stores in the mall, reports KOMO. The store’s directory indicates that there are two Macy’s stores in the mall. KIRO’s Maria Guerrero reports that the shooting didn’t take place at the Macy’s home store.

The female victims were shot dead at Macy’s make-up desk. Authorities say that the suspect cased the area before going back out to get a gun. KING 5’s Chris Ingalls reports that the weapon is thought to have been a .22 caliber hunting rifle.
2. The Gunman Allegedly Called Out a Woman’s Name Before Opening Fire

Washington State Patrol Sgt. Mark Francis told the media that he couldn’t comment on reports that the gunman had called out a woman’s name before opening fire, according to Q13 Fox. The gunman was armed with what appeared to be a hunting rifle.

At press conference, Mount Vernon police Lt. Chris Cammock said, “I don’t know what his motivations were. I don’t know what his motivations were to do this. I don’t know what his motivations were to continue. I don’t know what his motivations were to stop.”…

4. The FBI Says No Additional Attacks Are Expected in the Area

In a tweet, the FBI’s Seattle office said they are assisting the investigation and that they have no information “to suggest additional attacks.” ATF officials are also aiding the Washington State Patrol in the search for answers….
