islam

What is Islam? The obvious dictionary definition answer is that it’s a religion, but legally speaking it actually enjoys all of the advantages of race, religion and culture with none of the disadvantages.

Islam is a religion when mandating that employers accommodate the hijab, but when it comes time to bring it into the schools, places that are legally hostile to religion, American students are taught about Islam, visit mosques and even wear burkas and recite Islamic prayers to learn about another culture. Criticism of Islam is denounced as racist even though the one thing that Islam clearly isn’t is a race.

Islamist organizations have figured out how lock in every advantage of race, religion and culture, while expeditiously shifting from one to the other to avoid any of the disadvantages.

The biggest form of Muslim privilege has been to racialize Islam. The racialization of Islam has locked in all the advantages of racial status for a group that has no common race, only a common ideology.

Islam is the only religion that cannot be criticized. No other religion has a term in wide use that treats criticism of it as bigotry. Islamophobia is a unique term because it equates dislike of a religion with racism. Its usage makes it impossible to criticize that religion without being accused of bigotry.

By equating religion with race, Islam is treated not as a particular set of beliefs expressed in behaviors both good and bad, but as an innate trait that like race cannot be criticized without attacking the existence of an entire people. The idea that Islamic violence stems from its beliefs is denounced as racist.

Muslims are treated as a racial collective rather than a group that shares a set of views about the world.

That has made it impossible for the left to deal with ex-Muslims like Ayaan Hirsi Ali or non-Muslims from Muslim families like Salman Rushdie. If Islam is more like skin color than an ideology, then ex-Muslims, like ex-Blacks, cannot and should not exist. Under such conditions, atheism is not a debate, but a hate crime. Challenging Islam does not question a creed; it attacks the existence of an entire people.

Muslim atheists, unlike all other atheists, are treated as race traitors both by Muslims and leftists. The left has accepted the Brotherhood’s premise that the only authentic Middle Easterner is a Muslim (not a Christian or a Jew) and that the only authentic Muslim is a Salafist (even if they don’t know the word).

The racialization of Islam has turned blasphemy prosecutions into an act of tolerance while making a cartoon of a religious figure racist even when it is drawn by ex-Muslims like Bosch Fawstin. The New York Times will run photos of Chris Ofili’s “The Holy Virgin Mary” covered in dung and pornography, but refuses to run Mohammed cartoons because it deems one anti-religious and the other racist.

The equating of Islam with Arabs and Pakistanis has made it nearly impossible for the media to discuss violence against Christians in those parts of the world. The racialization of Islam has made Arab Christians, like Bangladeshi atheists, a contradiction in terms. The ethnic cleansing of the Yazidi could only be covered by giving them a clearly defined separate identity. Middle Eastern Christians are increasingly moving to avoid being categorized as Arabs because it is the only way to break through this wall of ignorance.

While racialization is the biggest Muslim privilege, race provides no protection for many Islamic religious practices. Muslims then seek religious discrimination laws to protect these practices even if it’s often a matter of debate whether their lawsuits protect their religious practices or impose them on others.

Islam is a theocracy. When it leaves the territories conquered by Islam, it seeks to replicate that theocracy through violence and by adapting the legal codes of the host society to suit its purposes.

Islamic blasphemy laws are duplicated using hate crime laws. Employers are obligated to make religious concessions to Muslim employees because of laws protecting religious practices, but many of these practices, such as refusing to carry out jobs involving pork, liquor or Seeing Eye dogs, are really ways of theocratically forcing behaviors that Islam forbids out of public life much as Saudi Arabia or Iran do.

Accusations of bigotry are used to outlaw ideas that Islam finds blasphemous and religious protection laws are used to banish behaviors that it disapproves of. By switching from race to religion and back again, Islamists construct a virtual theocracy by exploiting laws designed to protect different types of groups.

Religions in America traded theocracy for religious freedom. They gave up being able to impose their practices on others in exchange for being able to freely practice their own religions. Islam rejects religious freedom. It exploits it to remove the freedom of belief and practice of others. When it cannot do so through religious protection laws, it does so through claims of bigotry.

Religions were not meant to be immunized from blasphemy because that is theocracy. Instead religions are protected from restrictions, rather than from criticism. Islam insists on being protected from both. It makes no concessions to the freedom of others while demanding maximum religious accommodation.

While race and religion are used to create negative spaces in which Islam cannot be challenged, the creed is promoted positively as a culture. Presenting Islam as a culture allows it easier entry into schools and cultural institutions. Islamic missionary activity uses the Western longing for oriental exotica that its political activists loudly decry to inject it into secular spaces that would ordinarily be hostile to organized religion.

Leftists prefer to see Islam as a culture rather than a religion. Their worldview is not open to Islam’s clumsy photocopy of the deity that they have already rejected in their own watered down versions of Christianity and Judaism. But they are constantly seeking an aimless and undefined spirituality in non-Western cultures that they imagine are free of the materialism and hypocrisy of Western culture.

Viewing Islam as a culture allows the left to project its own ideology on a blank slate. That is why liberals remain passionately convinced that Islam is a religion of social justice. Their Islam is a mirror that reflects back their own views and ideas at them. They pretend to respect Islam as a culture without bothering to do any more than learn a few words and names so that they can seem like world travelers.

By morphing into a culture, Islam sheds its content and becomes a style, a form of dress, a drape of cloth, a style of beard, a curvature of script and a whiff of spices. It avoids uncomfortable questions about what the Koran actually says and instead sells the religion as a meaningful lifestyle. This approach has always had a great deal of appeal for African-Americans who were cut off from their own heritage through Islamic slavery, but it also enjoys success with white upper class college students.

The parents of those students often learn too late that Islam is not just another interchangeable monotheistic religion, that its mosques are not places where earnest grad students lecture elderly congregants about social justice and that its laws are not reducible to the importance of being nice to others.

Like a magician using misdirection, these transformations from religion to race, from race to culture and from culture to religion, distract Americans from asking what Islam really believes. By combining race, religion and culture, it replicates the building blocks of its theocracy within our legal and social spaces.

Separately each of these has its advantages and disadvantages. By combining them, Islam gains the advantages of all three, and by moving from one to the other, it escapes all of the disadvantages. The task of its critics is to deracialize Islam, to reduce it to an ideology and to ask what it really believes.

Islam is a privileged religion. And there’s a word for that. Theocracy.

via Wiesenthal Center Urges Key Mideast Leaders to Ban Palestinian Hate Preacher Who Invoked the Infamous “Blood Libel” to “Explain the Nazi Holocaust” | Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today urged King Abdullah of Jordan and Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas to immediately take action against Sheikh Khaled al-Maghrabi, a religious teacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque who is on the payroll of the Waqf (the PA religious authority), for using his class to promote the infamous “blood libel” screed that “explains” why the Nazi Holocaust took place.  The “Blood Libel” is a Christian medieval canard that accuses Jews of using the blood of children to make Passover matzah. In a video posted on YouTube,  Al-Mughrabi says, “The Children of Israel… would look for a small child, kidnap and steal him, bring a barrel called the barrel of nails… They would put the small child in the barrel and his body would be pierced by these nails. In the bottom of the barrel they would put a faucet and pour the blood.” He told his students to Google “Jews’ Bread” for proof.

In letters to both King Abdullah of Jordan and PA President Mahmoud Abbas, Wiesenthal Center Founder and Dean Rabbi Marvin Hier and Associate Dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper, wrote:

“The Temple Mount is a site of ultimate religious importance to Judaism and revered also by both Christianity and Islam. It should be an area that promotes peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding. However, the Al Aqsa Mosque has now been used to repeat horrific lies and legitimize genocide. Left unchallenged, the Sheik’s ‘sermon’ will only spawn more hatred and violence.
We note the outrage expressed by Muslim leaders and many others who felt that Islam was defamed when the Prophet Mohammad was depicted in cartoons. But where is the outrage, when a religious leader on the payroll of the Waqf defames Judaism?”
In their letter to King Abdullah, Hier and Cooper recalled his father King Hussein’s special relationship with the holy site. “Your father’s legacy and hopes of moderates of all faiths have been desecrated and threatened by a spiritual leader who invokes a horrific lie to justify the Nazi genocide and the mass murder of millions of innocent Jews,” they wrote.

Rabbi Hier and Rabbi Cooper urged both King Abdullah and Abbas to denounce al-Maghrabi’s  hateful speech and to call on the Waqf to remove him from its payroll and “to permanently ban Sheikh Khaled al-Maghribi from ever using the grounds holy to our faiths to spread his deceitful and dangerous lies.”

Religious lesson in Al-Aqsa Mosque:

“[Jews] prepare their matzah…
with the blood of children…

They were burned in Germany

because they kidnapped

young children” to make matzah

“The Children of Israel… would look for a small child, kidnap and steal him, bring a barrel called the barrel of nails… They would put the small child

in the barrel and his body would be
pierced by these nails.

In the bottom of the barrel they would put a faucet and pour the blood”

“These stories are known. There is proof of them.

They are in court files…

Write: ‘Jews’ bread’ in Google…

You will see all of these stories,

and for all of them there is proof and evidence,

with dates and police files in which the material is found”

“The attacks on America (9/11 attack on World Trade Center)…

It’s known that the Jews were behind them”

“The Freemason lodges are witchcraft gatherings

of the Children of Israel…

If someone wants to be accepted as a new member,

or rise in rank… he has to somehow

bring one of his sons or daughters,

or his wife or one of his male or female relatives,

and put them on the table and slaughter them with his own hands

as a sacrifice to Satan…

My brothers, this exists until today”

Sheikh Khaled Al-Mughrabi teaches two religious classes a week at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This past Friday, the Sheikh chose to demonize Jews as the epitome of evil – basing his teachings on both Western and Muslim Antisemitism. The Sheikh presented the blood libel that Jews make Passover matzah bread from the blood of children as fact:
“These stories are known. There is proof of them… Write: ‘Jews’ bread’ in Google… You will see all of these stories, and for all of them there is proof and evidence, with dates and police files in which the material is found.”

The worshippers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque heard how Jews would obtain the blood:

“The Children of Israel… would look for a small child, kidnap and steal him, bring a barrel called the barrel of nails… They would put the small child in the barrel and his body would be pierced by these nails. In the bottom of the barrel they would put a faucet and pour the blood.”

Using Antisemitism to promote hatred is common in the PA. Only yesterday, Palestinian Media Watch reported on a PA TV children’s program that presented Jews as “barbaric monkeysthe most evil among creations.”

In this lesson from the mosque, the Sheikh explained that when the Jewish practice of using blood for matzah was discovered, the Europeans took defensive measures. European Antisemitism, including the repeated expulsions of Jews, were European self-defense measures. According to the teacher of Islam at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, this also explains the Nazi extermination of Jews:

“In the end it reached the point where they were burned in Germany, because of these things, because they kidnapped young children.”

In his antisemitic tirade, the Sheikh also explained that the Jews were behind the September 11 attacks on the United States – “It’s known that the Jews were behind them” – and that Jews sacrifice their friends and relatives in order to advance in the Freemasons:

“The Freemason lodges are witchcraft gatherings of the Children of Israel. One of the ceremonies, for instance if someone wants to be accepted as a new member, or rise in rank… he has to somehow bring one of his sons or daughters, or his wife or one of his male or female relatives, and put them on the table and slaughter them with his own hands as a sacrifice to Satan, in order to rise in the ranks of the Freemasons. My brothers, this exists until today.”

According to the PA, religious lessons in all the mosques are supervised by the PA and require prior approval. As explained by then PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash:

“The mosques and everything related to them belong to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, from the employees – the imam, the speaker, the Quran teacher, the librarian, the caretakers and custodians… He noted that the religious lessons, Quran study and other activities going on in the mosques require prior approval by the Ministry.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 16, 2010]

PMW recently reported that official PA TV recently taught that “[Jews] are usurers… They control the media, the money, the press, the resources…” and also that humanity will never “live in comfort… peace or fortune or tranquility” as long as “the Jews are causing devastating corruption throughout the land.”

The official PA daily has likewise promoted this same blood libel that Jews use the blood of non-Jews to make their Passover matzah bread, as PMW documented last year.

The following is a longer excerpt of the sermon:

Sheikh Khaled Al-Mughrabi, teaches Islam twice a week in the Al-Aqsa Mosque:

“The Children of Israel have more than one god… They say that our god is number ten. It’s an internal [secret] matter of theirs…

They have smaller gods, from one to nine, and they have gods who are stronger than Allah, from 11 to 34. Devil or Satan is number 11 for them. If you look at history, my brothers, you’ll see that the number 11 is holy for the Jews, and 666 is also a holy number, three times six signifies the Devil.

These two numbers, 11 and three times six, are holy numbers. Everything they wish to happen, or that they want to do and succeed at, they try to make happen on the 11th of the month… Therefore, notice the attacks on America (i.e., 9-11 attack on World Trade Center) that took place. When were they? On the 11th of the month. Why? Because who was behind them? … It’s known that the Jews were behind them. The evidence discovered afterward points to the fact that the Jews were behind the attack…

I will show you the ways of Satan, through which he deceives the Children of Israel… The first way is the promise of eternal life… The American film industry is owned by the Children of Israel. Among the most notable film [themes] that this film industry focuses on is the idea of eternal life. You can see films, all of which are about vampires. On what is this idea based? On the fact that if you killed a human being and drank his blood in a certain way, you would attain eternal life. Why did Satan put this in their minds? To cause them to spill each other’s blood. One will kill the other and drink his blood, and thus attain eternal life…

The Children of Israel had the holiday of Pesach, what is now called Passover. Every holiday, every group would look for a small child, kidnap and steal him, bring a barrel called the barrel of nails… They would put the small child in the barrel and his body would be pierced by these nails. In the bottom of the barrel they would put a faucet and pour the blood… The Devil or one of the big gods, demanded it of them as a condition for fulfilling their wishes, that they eat [matzah] bread kneaded with the blood of children.

On the holiday of Passover it is forbidden for them to eat regular bread. They prepare their matzahs. These matzahs were not kneaded in the regular way, but rather with the blood of children. When these stories were exposed, the Children of Israel were expelled from all of Europe and the tragedy of the Children of Israel began in all Europe. In the end it reached the point where they were burned in Germany, because of these things, because they kidnapped young children. These stories are known. There is proof of them. They are in court files. There were a lot of trials against the Children of Israel in these matters. You can see a long list of these stories. Even though there is a news blackout about them, they are on the internet. Write: “Jews’ bread” in Google, “Jews’ bread” or “Jews’ matzah” … You will see all of these stories, and for all of them there is proof and evidence, with dates and police files in which the material is found…

The Freemason lodges are witchcraft gatherings of the Children of Israel.

The endangered Siberian tiger is making a comeback, a fresh census has found. The numbers have increased about 10 percent over the last decade, thanks to WWF conservation efforts and a program overseen by the Russian president.

The World Wide Fund for Nature is happy to report that the animal’s population has increased to as many as 540 individuals “in all the key areas where WWF has been working for many years,” its head for Russia, Igor Chestin, said.

“This success is due to the commitment of Russia’s political leadership and the tireless dedication of rangers and conservationists in very difficult conditions,” he added.

In the 1940s, the Siberian tiger population was nearly extinct, dropping below 40; but now, it has reached 480-540, with around 100 of them cubs. There was a jump to nearly 50 new tigers – also known as the Amur tigers – in the last decade. A census is carried out every 10 years.

The program was set up by the Russian government in concert with the Amur Tiger Center and WWF, covering over 150,000 square km (90,000 sq. miles). It involved over 2,000 project workers and specialists carrying out field research, using GPS, satnavs and camera traps.

In the summer of 2008, President Putin and Emergencies Minister Sergey Shoigu (as defense minister, now commander of Russia’s Armed Forces) visited the Ussuri Reserve and personally oversaw how the process is carried out. The president got acquainted with the technology and took a hands-on approach with the animals. At one point, a tigress woke up and broke free from her trap, with the president quickly grabbing a tranquilizer gun and putting the animal back to sleep.

“The key is strong political support. Where we have it, in countries like Russia and India, we are seeing tremendous results,” Mike Baltzer, who leads the organization’s Tigers Alive Initiative, said. “However, in South East Asia, where political support is weaker, we are facing a crisis. These countries stand to lose their tigers if urgent action isn’t taken immediately,” he added.

Putin has made big strides in international cooperation with others – especially China, in the relaxing of controls on state borders at the Primorsky Krai, in order to allow the free movement of tigers and Amur leopards – another animal whose conservation is now a major concern for the government. Wires were removed to prevent injuries, cameras were set up at the border, and various other measures put into place by the two countries. Now satellite signals are being beamed back to Moscow from collar trackers.

The president is taking care to bring the problems faced by the big cats to the fore, even introducing a computer-animated tiger cub to Russia’s most long-running children’s show.

While Putin was serving as prime minister, he got actor Leonardo DiCaprio onboard with the initiative at a summit in St. Petersburg back in 2010. This was with a view to doubling tiger numbers by 2022 – something WWF is campaigning for, and is dubbed as the Tx2 initiative.

But the wonderful animal remains endangered, and it is in large part thanks to anti-poaching efforts that the killing off of the tigers was brought under control. Parts of the tigers’ bodies are in very high demand in parts of Asia – especially China and Laos. Chinese smugglers are after a whole range of animals, including leopards, elephants and rhinos, among others. Tigers are being hunted down and products containing their body parts are openly sold in luxury casinos and hotels.

In Laos, wildlife protection initiatives are known to be weak, according to a report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

Russian is getting tough on abuses, however. Serious criminal charges await anyone who engages in illegal hunting or trafficking, as well as storage, of endangered animals or their body parts, according to WWF-Russia.

Key to the efforts is a comprehensive census, one like the Russian government organized recently. WWF urges every country with a tiger population to do the same, seeing this as a key strategy on the way to Tx2.

Southeast Asia is next in line, according to WWF. The situation in Malaysia is especially dire, with numbers down to 240-340 tigers, according to local experts. There’s a similar situation in Thailand, Myanmar and adjoining countries.

Poaching remains the greatest threat faced by the graceful animal.

Russia is expected to release the final results of its census in October.

Egypt Says NY Times Promoting Muslim Brotherhood Agitprop

Egypt Says NY Times Promoting Muslim Brotherhood Agitprop, The Clarion ProjectRyan Mauro, June 3, 2015

(Obama has spread and relied upon much the same meme as the NY Times and Washington Post. — DM)

New-York-Times-Building-IP_1The New York Times building in New York City

If the New York Times values objective reporting, then it must mention the Brotherhood’s calls to violence in its coverage as well as the many other instances of violence that the group has been involved in.

*********************

The Egyptian ambassador to the U.S. has written a public letter toThe New York Times protesting “its unquestioning adoption of Moslem Brotherhood’s propaganda” and false characterization of the Islamist group as non-violent.

Ambassador Mohamed Tawfik’s letter was written around the same time that the Egyptian embassy released three videos of calls to violence made on Muslim Brotherhood television networks based in Turkey.

The networks’ coverage promoted explicit calls for killing Egyptian police officers and attacking foreign companies and embassies. A threat was also made to carry out regional attacks against the interests of countries who support the Egyptian government.

Egypt is infuriated at the Times as well as the Washington Post for repeatedly asserting that the Brotherhood is non-violent. In response to the Times suggestion that the Egyptian government’s prosecution of the Brotherhood is pushing it towards terrorism, the Egyptian ambassador writes:

This statement demonstrates, at best, a complete misunderstanding of the roots of radicalism. At worst, it amounts to a justification for violent extremism. Today, terrorists in Egypt are part of a network of extremists who are bound by a singular distorted ideology, and by a shared goal of taking our region back hundreds of years. They are inspired by the radical teachings of the former Moslem Brotherhood leader Sayyid Kutb [Qutb]. Terrorists in Egypt share the same evil goals as terrorists in Iraq, Syria and Libya.

Indeed, Ambassador Tawfik is correct that the New York Times separates Islamists from terrorists and extremists. The Times editorial condemns “relentless and sweeping crackdown on Islamists, under the baseless contention that they are inherently dangerous.”

The New York Times described sentencing to death of former President Morsi and 100 other Brotherhood members as “deplorable.” It describes the Brotherhood as having renounced violence in the 1970s.

However, Morsi and the defendants were sentenced for his involvement in prison breaks in 2011 that freed 20,000 inmates, including Morsi himself. The Egyptian government says the attacks were well-orchestrated and involved participation by the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Hezbollah.

Tawfik chastises the Times for failing to mention that the prison break was a violent operation that resulted in the deaths of prison guards and inmates and freed members of Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Egyptian ambassador also excoriated the Washington Post in February for “toeing the Muslim Brotherhood line” and advised it to be more balance in order to “save whatever is left of your credibility in the Arab world.”

Egyptian President El-Sisi came into power after the popularly-supported military intervention in July 2013 overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood government. The move had the support of a broad spectrum of Egyptian society with public endorsements from secular-democratic activists, the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar University and the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

The overthrow came after Morsi (whose election itself was marred bycharges of voter fraud) seized far-sweeping powers for himself, essentially negating any semblance of a democratic government.

El-Sisi is often characterized as an anti-democratic strongman; a depiction that his government is now challenging.

He argues that these strongman tactics are necessary because a democratic transition cannot be completed without stability, economic development and a confrontation with Islamism (also known as Political Islam). He asks the West to understand that there is a “civilizational gap between us and you” and it will take time to modernize.

A study commissioned by the Egyptian government criticized its heavy-handedness but concluded that banning Islamist parties is required for the country’s stability and democratic development. It recommended a program to separate politics and religion.

The Egyptian government sees the Islamic State (ISIS) as a natural outgrowth of the Muslim Brotherhood. Its website warns that the Muslim Brotherhood has a network of fronts in America that are disguised as civil society organizations.

El-Sisi called for a reformation in Islamic interpretation in January 2014 and made a dramatic call on the Islamic religious establishment to address problematic teachings this January that received widespread media coverage. He has explicitly said that Egypt should be “a civil state, not an Islamic one” and defined the ideology of the enemy as Political Islam in an interview on FOX News Channel.

El-Sisi is also confronting Islamist terrorism internationally, in addition to its fight against Islamic State in the Sinai Peninsula. His government is an enemy of Hamas and is as minimally anti-Israel as can be expected of an Arab leader.

Egypt has conducted airstrikes on ISIS in Libya and is materially supporting the Libyan government in its civil war against Islamist forces. Egypt and Libya are complaining about a lack of American backing. A new Egyptian-backed offensive is said to be in the works.

El-Sisi is assembling an Arab rapid-reaction force of 40-50,000 troops that can quickly be deployed to fight Islamic State and other terrorists. Egypt is also taking part in the Arab military intervention against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

El-Sisi also made a historic visit to a Coptic Christian church during mass on Christmas Eve. He challenged the Egyptian honor culture when he apologized to a woman who was raped in Tahrir Square.

Major American media outlets have fallen for the falsehood that the Muslim Brotherhood is non-violent. It is true that the Egyptian government is often criticized for its human rights record, but coverage of those accusations should not automatically exempt the Brotherhood and other Islamists from blame.

If the New York Times values objective reporting, then it must mention the Brotherhood’s calls to violence in its coverage as well as the many other instances of violence that the group has been involved in.

No, Mr. President, you don’t fully understand our fears

June 3, 2015

No, Mr. President, you don’t fully understand our fears

Op-Ed: Don’t just blame Israelis for seeing danger where you see possibility, as you did in your latest TV interview. Work to give us a tangible basis upon which to rebuild our hopes for a peaceful future

By David Horovitz June 3, 2015, 4:16 pm

via No, Mr. President, you don’t fully understand our fears | The Times of Israel.

Discussing Israeli reservations about the Iran nuclear deal you are so energetically pushing, Mr. President, you asserted in your striking, heartfelt Israel Channel 2 interview broadcast Tuesday that “I can say to the Israeli people: I understand your concerns and I understand your fears.”

But here’s the thing, Mr. President: You don’t. And your interview made that so unfortunately plain. You don’t fully understand our concerns and our fears — not as regards the ideologically and territorially rapacious regime in Tehran, driven by a perverted sense of religious imperative, and not as regards the Palestinian conflict.

This is not to dismiss those passionate, fervent entreaties you delivered to us in the interview, about the obligation for Israel to live up to our “core values,” our foundational values — the necessity for us to protect the “essential values” enshrined in our Declaration of Independence, to protect our democracy, and insist upon our morality, and ensure hope of a better future for ourselves and our neighbors, especially our Palestinian neighbors.

Please hear me out. This is not some closed-minded Obama-bashing critique from an Israeli for whom you can do nothing right. Those of us in the complicated middle ground of Israeli politics, which is most of us, endorse every word you had to say about the necessity to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians in order to maintain Israel as a Jewish democracy. We share your worries about what becomes of that “Palestinian youth in Ramallah” who you referenced, embittered and frustrated by the status quo. We share your desire to bolster the hope that you so poignantly recalled seeing, when you visited two years ago, “in the faces of Israeli children… in the faces of Palestinian children.”

Please hear me out. This is not some closed-minded Obama-bashing critique from an Israeli for whom you can do nothing right

But if you think about it, Mr. President, you know full well where our hearts are.

You know full well that the Jewish state and its people want nothing more than to live in peace and tranquility alongside their neighbors. After all, as you yourself highlighted in the interview, the biggest applause you got when you spoke to Israeli students in Jerusalem came when you declared, “I know that the people of Israel care about those Palestinian children.”

What you so evidently haven’t fully internalized, however, is the extent to which we Israelis in the middle ground — the non-zealots, the ones who don’t want to annex the West Bank and subvert our democracy, and who don’t want a single binational entity between the river and the sea that puts an end to Jewish statehood — have been battered by recent history, and continue to be battered by the events unfolding all around us.

You seek to assure us that this deal with Iran is in our own best interests when we know that Iran — which almost daily calls for our destruction — will paint any agreement as a victory and a vindication, and will utilize that ostensible victory to step up its efforts to harm us, via terrorism and via its proxy armies in Lebanon and Gaza, while also continuing to do its utmost to cheat and bully its way to the bomb. We know that the deal will cement this bleakest of regimes in power in Tehran, and that it was your negotiators who blinked, who never forced the regime to choose between survival and its nuclear program, when the financial leverage was available to impose that choice.

You implore us, again and again, to give more thought to the plight of the Palestinians, to turn away from leadership — in the seemingly ever-present shape of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — that peddles the politics of fear, and instead to choose the path of optimism and opportunity. But Israel just elected Netanyahu again, ignoring your entreaties, because the evidence of danger outweighed the evidence upon which to build hope. And here’s the irony, Mr. President: Your policies and your rhetoric haven’t helped.

You complained in the interview that there are lots of “filters” between you and the Israeli people, who therefore are not getting your message directly. (This, amusingly, in an interview conveyed verbatim into the living rooms of the people of Israel, in prime time, on our most-watched television channel; the full interview is also online here.) Believe me, Mr. President, the problem is not with the messenger. The problem is with the message, and the actions.

Israel just elected Netanyahu again, ignoring your entreaties, because the evidence of danger outweighed the evidence upon which to build hope

You claimed that you are “always trying to balance a politics of hope and a politics of fear.” You acknowledged that the Arab Spring has turned into the disaster of Syria; you lamented the anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment in the Arab world; you mentioned the threats from Gaza and from south Lebanon. And you said that you have “never suggested” it was inappropriate for Israel “to insist that any two-state solution take into account the risk that what appears to be a peaceful Palestinian Authority today could turn hostile.”

You said all that, but have you truly advised and chivied and acted on that basis?

Have you truly internalized the fact that five years ago, Israel was contemplating relinquishing the Golan Heights, the high strategic ground, for a peace deal with Bashar Assad. Where would that have left us now? Utterly vulnerable to the brutal spillover of anarchic violence across that border.

Have you really, truly internalized that Israel left southern Lebanon in 2000 and Gaza in 2005, to the applause and reassurance of the international community, only to see the vicious terrorist armies of Hezbollah and Hamas fill the respective vacuums? Have you really, honestly, utterly internalized that Hamas booted out the forces of the relatively moderate Mahmoud Abbas from Gaza in a matter of hours in 2007, and that there is every reason to believe that Hamas would seek to do the same in the West Bank were Israel to do as you wish, and pull out? And Hamas in the West Bank would entirely paralyze this country. A single Hamas rocket that landed a mile from the airport last summer prompted two-thirds of foreign airlines to stop flying to Israel for a day and a half — including all the major US airlines. A single rocket. Hamas rule in the West Bank would close down our entire country.

The Palestinian Authority is carefully fostering a climate of profound hostility to Israel, not one of reconciliation

In all candor, Mr. President, I don’t know which of the security arrangements that your “top military advisers” were formulating could credibly have defended us against the all-too plausible scenario of a West Bank takeover by Hamas. You insisted that you were not expecting Israel to “be naive and assume the best.” But barely a decade ago, we were murdered in our hundreds by a strategic onslaught of suicide bombers dispatched from the cities of the West Bank where we had relinquished day-to-day control. To this day, that relatively moderate Mahmoud Abbas uses his television stations to incite relentlessly against Israel, deriding our millennia of history in this land; his Fatah loyalists use their Facebook pages to encourage terrorism against us. Make no mistake, Mr. President: the PA is carefully fostering a climate of profound hostility to Israel, not one of reconciliation.

When Netanyahu last froze settlement expansion, in 2009-2010, Abbas still stayed away from the peace table for nine months of the 10-month freeze. As his price for joining Secretary Kerry’s peace efforts in 2013, Abbas demanded that Israel release dozens of the most dangerous orchestrators of terrorism — and Netanyahu complied. At the negotiating table, Abbas insisted that millions of the third- and fourth-generation descendants of Palestinians who used to live in today’s Israel be given the “right of return” as part of any deal establishing Palestine — seeking, that is, a very different two-state solution than the one we want: His stance spells a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza alongside an Israel turned demographically into Palestine as well. The relatively moderate Abbas remains locked into a despicable “reconciliation” government with Hamas, the terrorist government of Gaza that avowedly seeks our elimination.

Most Israelis will endorse the most far-reaching territorial compromises in return for a credible guarantee of sustainable tranquility

It is these bleak realities that, to our own great sorrow Mr. President, overwhelm the hopes we have for peace, a better future and the opportunity we desperately seek to guarantee that our country ensure its Jewish-democratic essence. Believe me, Mr. President, no Israeli family that sends its children off to fight in Gaza, no Israeli family that watches Hamas expand its rocket range and fire ever deeper into Israel — in short, no Israeli family — wants anything other than peace and tranquility here. And most Israelis will endorse the most far-reaching territorial compromises in return for a credible guarantee of sustainable tranquility. And we’ll throw out any government that fails to seize a realistic opportunity to pursue these goals.

But here’s where, with the greatest respect, you’ve failed us thus far, Mr. President. You got the settlement freeze six years ago, you got the prisoner releases in 2013, but what did you wrest from Abbas? Did he stop the incitement against Israel? Did he moderate his positions on the “right of return”? You fault Netanyahu for his bleak wordview, but did you castigate Abbas for entering a governing partnership which gives Hamas veto power over his ministers? Did you tell him, sorry, that’s not going to work for us? No. You said you’d keep right on dealing with him.

You berate Netanyahu for ruling out Palestinian statehood on election eve, dismiss his subsequent re-endorsement of a two-state solution as full of “so many caveats” as to be unrealistic, and warn that Israel is consequently losing international credibility, and that this makes it harder for you to defend us internationally. But love or loathe Netanyahu, his concerns, Mr. President, are compelling. Hamas did anticipate reducing Israel to rubble last summer, and only the extraordinary performance of Iron Dome prevented this. Hamas would try to take over the West Bank if we pulled out — and then to tunnel under and fire rockets over our borders.

Abbas has not encouraged his people to internalize Jewish sovereign legitimacy in this part of the world. And along with that hope you espied for a better future there is hatred, too, in so many young Palestinian faces. Think of the toxin that must have been absorbed by the 16-year-old Palestinian who stabbed to death an 18-year-old Israeli soldier, Eden Atias, asleep next to him on a bus in Afula, northern Israel, in November 2013. Think of your daughters, of around that age, as I think of my children, and recognize how remote from their most basic, decent, humane instincts is an act such as that, and how systematic and relentless the climate of anti-Israel hostility must be in the Abbas-controlled West Bank to have produced that killer and others like him. The expansion of settlements discredits moderates, and makes it easier for terrorist groups to recruit, but that’s not the root of the hatred, the root of the conflict. At its heart, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict marches bloodily on because the Palestinian leadership refuses to acknowledge that the Jewish nation has any legitimacy here.

If our enemies were to lay down their weapons right now, Mr. President, there would be peace. If we were to lay down our weapons, our country would be destroyed

And you, Mr. President, so ready to fault us for failures, ready even in your interview to cite American failures and mistakes and lost values, have failed to insist on a similar self-reflection, and morality, and assertion of humane values from the Palestinians and their leadership.

Yes, we are mighty Israel, a military force to be reckoned with, an economic powerhouse, and they are the poor Palestinians, ostensibly only seeking statehood. But take a step back and we are a tiny sliver of land, nine miles wide at our narrowest point, on the western edge of a vast landmass filled with hundreds of millions of people largely hostile to the very fact of our existence. If our enemies were to lay down their weapons right now, Mr. President, there would be peace. If we were to lay down our weapons, our country would be destroyed. And therefore, Mr. President, we will need a great deal more reassurance before we dare to hope.

You can still help with that. Really, you can. Start by demanding an end to incitement against Israel in Palestinian schools, in Palestinian media and by Palestinian spiritual leaders. Incidentally, demand similar efforts on the Israeli side, by all means. Tell Abbas that a governing partnership with Hamas is unacceptable. Tell him to stop battering Israel in every international forum, denouncing us for “genocide” at the UN, seeking our isolation and economic devastation. Again, make demands of Israel too, by all means. Urge Netanyahu to stop building at settlements in areas even he does not envisage retaining under a permanent accord. Ensure we do ease movement for Palestinians in the West Bank, when it’s safe to do so. Encourage the prime minister in his recent minor shift toward a more positive take on the Arab Peace Initiative as a basis for a regional peace effort.

Press the Palestinians toward compromise; don’t indulge and endorse their obduracy

Chivy, mediate, encourage. But don’t embolden our enemies by publicly placing so disproportionate a level of blame on us for the failure of your peace efforts. Don’t indicate that you might reduce your support for us at the UN. Don’t further bolster the growing Palestinian confidence that the international community will impose Palestinian statehood upon us without the necessity to negotiate modalities that ensure our long-term well-being. Press the Palestinians toward compromise; don’t indulge and endorse their obduracy. Work toward a Palestinian state truly at peace with Israel. Help give us more reasons to do what you want us to do, what you believe it is in our interests to do, which is to favor hope over fear.

“We can’t just be driven by this sense that there’s only danger; there’s also possibility,” you said in your interview. Well then, act to reduce our sense of danger, Mr. President, and you will find us determined to advance every possibility for a better future.

You want us to be the very best Israel that we can be? So do we, Mr. President. So do we.

You said you see your job as “to feed hope” and “not just feed fear.” Well, I implore you Mr. President, don’t settle for blaming us for giving in to our concerns and our fears. Help reduce them. Help alleviate them. Give us the evidence upon which to rebuild our hope.

Call on Iran to allow international inspectors to take inventory of Iranian military sites

Some 200 European officials are calling for Iran’s hardline Islamic government to be dissolved and for the country to allow international inspectors to take inventory of all Iranian sites suspected of housing an illicit nuclear weapons program, according to a letter sent to European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday.

The delegation, comprised of 221 members of the European Parliament from 28 EU member states, slams Iran’s “destructive meddling” throughout the region and criticizes its human rights record, which is ranked among the worst in the world.

The delegation also backs regime change aimed to bring down Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his hardline inner circle of allies, according to the letter, which was spearheaded by Friends of a Free Iran (FoFI), a European Parliament group formed in 2003.

This regime change would include Iran becoming “a democratic pluralistic republic based on universal suffrage, freedom of expression, abolition of torture and death penalty, separation of church and state, a non-nuclear Iran, an independent judicial system, rights for minorities, peaceful coexistence in the region, gender equality and commitment to Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” the letter reads.

While the leaders did not take an explicit stance on the ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, they demanded the country immediately allow inspectors to take inventory of its military sites.

Iranian leaders have rejected this demand multiple times in recent months.

“Iran needs to adhere to all UN Security Council resolutions with regard to its nuclear program and it should respond to all outstanding [International Atomic Energy Agency] questions while allowing intrusive inspections of all its military and non-military sites, whether declared or undeclared,” the letter states.

The European leaders also condemn Iran’s support for terrorism in the region, including in Iran, Yemen, Syria, and elsewhere.

“The destructive meddling of Iran in the region is of growing concern,” they write. “Amnesty International has disclosed many details on the war atrocities in Iraq of the Shia militias affiliated to Iran. Iran is at the heart of the crisis in this region and not part of the solution. If fundamentalism and extremism is to be uprooted in this region, Iran’s destructive influence and interference should end.”

The leaders also single out Iran Quds Force for contributing to atrocities in Syria.

“The active participation of the [Quds] Force, Hezbollah and other Iranian backed militias in the defense of [Bashar al-]Assad dictatorship has so far led to the death of 300,000,” the letter states. “Concurrently, Iran has expanded its dominion over Yemen.”

In addition to Iran’s expansion outward, it stepped up efforts within the country to silence democratic activists.

An Iranian artist, for instance, was sentenced to 12 years in prison this week for drawing cartoons lampooning members of the Iranian parliament.

It also sentenced to death a blogger accused of insulting the prophet in his writings.

Executions in Iran also have hit record levels under President Hassan Rouhani.

“The situation of human rights in Iran needs to be heeded in all relations with this country,” the European officials write. “Iran should end the executions, free political prisoners, stop the repression of women and respect the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people.”

Obama Officials Claim Iran’s Nuclear Program Frozen or Rolled Back During Negotiations

New York Times report Tuesday shows increases in Iran’s stockpile of nuclear fuel are “undercutting” the Obama administration’s claims to have “frozen” or rolled back its nuclear program during a period of negotiations.

The New York Times reported:

With only one month left before a deadline to complete a nuclear deal with Iran, international inspectors have reported that Tehran’s stockpile of nuclear fuel increased about 20 percent over the last 18 months of negotiations, partially undercutting the Obama administration’s contention that the Iranian program had been “frozen” during that period.

But Western officials and experts cannot quite figure out why. One possibility is that Iran has run into technical problems that have kept it from converting some of its enriched uranium into fuel rods for reactors, which would make the material essentially unusable for weapons. Another is that it is increasing its stockpile to give it an edge if the negotiations fail.

President Obama told CNN’s Candy Crowley Dec. 21 that “you look at an example like Iran, over the last year and a half, since we began negotiations with them, that’s probably the first year and a half in which Iran has not advanced its nuclear program in the last decade.”

“Our diplomacy is at work with respect to Iran, where, for the first time in a decade, we’ve halted the progress of its nuclear program and reduced its stockpile of nuclear material,” Obama said during his State of the Union Jan. 20.

In an interview with Vox posted in February, Obama said, “We have been able to freeze the program for the first time and, in fact, roll back some elements of its program, like its stockpiles of ultra highly enriched uranium.” During his weekly online address April 4, Obama claimed Iran “had agreed that it will not stockpile the materials it needs to build a weapon.”

Secretary of State John Kerry told This Week March 1, “The fact is, the interim agreement has been adhered to. It has been inspected. We have proven that we have slowed Iran’s–even set back–its nuclear program.”

In various press briefings, spokeswomen Marie Harf and Jen Psaki made similar assertions about the impact of the Joint Plan of Action, as has White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.

Harf called the New York Times story “bizarre” and inaccurate Tuesday. However, analysis from the Institute for Science and International Security agreed with the article’s contention that Iran effectively had stockpiled enough low-enriched uranium that it would be nearly “impossible for them to meet those obligations in practice,” as blogger Omri Ceren put it.

According to an announcement published by the Islamic State today (Wednesday), the terror organization’s fighters were able to conquer two villages north of the city of Daraa – meaning that the organization is nearing the border with Israel. The villages are located at the entrance to Hauran, the region closest to the Israel-Syria border.

Images from the area of the fighting show Syrian Rebels trying to fend off Islamic State fighters, who were able to reach as near as 60 kilometers from Quneitra. The Rebels on the other hand claim that they succeeded in thwarting the terror organization’s advancement.

According to reports, the Islamic State is getting closer to the border with Israel and the only force that can stop its advancement towards the Golan Heights is the Syrian Rebels, with Assad’s forces weakening. The As-Suwayda Governorate, in which a Syrian Druze population resides, is also under threat of an Islamic State takeover.

Battles on the way to Damascus also continue, as Syrian Rebel and Islamic State forces are getting closer to defeating the Assad regime. According to reports from Syria, there is a real concern that the country could once and for all fall into the hands of the rebels, after decades under the rule of the Assad regime.

Meanwhile, US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken reported a series of achievements reached by the coalition forces operating against the Islamic State. According to Blinken, the coalition forces were able to kill more than 10,000 Islamic State fighters thus far in nine months of fighting, a fact he claimed could have serious implications for the terror organization.
