The West sobers up to Islamism

March 26, 2013

Israel Hayom | The West sobers up to Islamism.

The Americans have learned many lessons on Islamism since the U.S. first provided funding and arms to Islamic extremists fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s. After the defeated Russian army retreated, the Islamic terrorists turned their weapons on the Americans, and under the name al-Qaida reached the Twin Towers in New York.

Israel had a similar experience when in the 1980s it permitted the Mujama al-Islamiya organization to establish itself in the Gaza Strip as a group providing care to the needy, and violently opposed Israel’s enemies at the time, the communists and the Palestine Liberation Organization. Mujama al-Islamiya later turned into Hamas, a deadly enemy of Israel.

The Middle East is filled with such examples, also in the political realm. Western officials who pressed Israel and the Palestinian Authority for democratization got Hamas in the Palestinian election in 2006.

Western pressure on Turkey for democratization brought Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Islamic government into power and led to the arrest of pro-democracy military officers. Similar pressure on Hosni Mubarak’s regime in Egypt for democratization led to Mubarak’s downfall and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood.

We can expect similar damage to be caused by deficient Western understanding of the processes and norms in our region. The European Union finds it difficult to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization despite Hezbollah’s involvement in attacks against Israel on European soil, and the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister, among many other incidents.

Despite this, it does appear the West is quietly sobering up about Islamic radicalism. It is hard to ignore the damage caused by Islamic radicalism in the Arab Spring and even in Gaza after Israel’s withdrawal.

Inflammatory promises from bearded preachers at mosques stating that “Islam is the solution” don’t pay off anymore. Every sheikh who built a career on incitement and terror is now jeopardizing God’s status to believers who view God as the exclusive source of solutions to distress.

Under these circumstances, it is no longer sufficient to spout popular incitement against Jews as the source of all evil. The search for funding to revive moribund economies has led Islamists reluctantly to the “hated” Christian West. But Western leaders and investors are deterred by the deterioration in the Arab world.

For Islamic extremists, there is one possibility, which is to prey on the resources of rich Islamic Arab nations. Islamists are now starting to attach themselves to Arab monarchies that are abundant with wealth and stagnated by corruption. This is in preparation for toppling these monarchies under the Islamic dictate of removing “oppressive rule.”

The rulers of the monarchies, particularly in the Persian Gulf, are reluctant to move even a part of their resources to extremist and hostile Islamic nations. These monarchies send a miserly flow of financial aid in order to keep the discontents under wraps.

Within this framework, Saudi Arabia aids Egypt and Qatar aids Hamas.

The funding covers aid and weapons to rebels in Syria, including members of the radical Nusrat al-Islam, an alternative name for al-Qaida volunteers who came to Syria. These people operate alongside the Free Syrian Army and are involved in war crimes, bloodshed and terror.

The sobering West now needs to decide whether the rule of Nusrat al-Islam is a desirable alternative to the rule of Bashar Assad.

It is not easy to be an Islamist today. In the past, it was possible to blame every ill on the “imperialist West” and its emissaries “the Zionist Jews occupying Palestine.” Now, the situation is much more complicated. No shopkeepers in dusty alleys in Cairo will sell bread in exchange for the slogan “Islam is the solution.”

The collapsing Egyptian economy needs Western aid in the form of “crusader” dollars and “Christian” flour. On top of this disaster, the Shiite Iranian threat is casting its eyes on the Arab wealth reserves in the Persian Gulf.

Time is bringing Shiite Iran closer to a nuclear bomb, which is keeping Arabian Peninsula monarchs awake at night. The nightmare is based on Iran’s bridgehead in Bahrain, which is majority Shiite. The dependence of the Arab oil states on the protection of the U.S. Navy is growing. The failure of sanctions against Iran and Iran’s willingness to renew talks only if the issue of Bahraini Shiites is included represent a blow to those who believe in the feasibility of dialogue with Iran.

It is likely that U.S. President Barack Obama already understands that an Iranian nuclear weapon would primarily endanger American interests in the Middle East. Even Muslims with the most extreme hatred of Israel now understand that an Iranian nuclear weapon wouldn’t be meant for the “liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem,” but rather for the Iranian Shiite revolution to take control of the Sunni Arab world and its resources.

Syria is now a battlefield between regional and global superpowers. It is clear to Arabs that they are trapped in the grasp of rival powers. On one side, there is anti-American China and Russia, supporting the Shiite axis of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. On the other side, there is the U.S. and its allies, including Turkey, Europe and Israel.

The conflicting interests of these two sides neutralize any effort to stop the slaughter in Syria. As of now, the voices calling for compromise are growing. But as more time passes, the powers will try to equip their respective side with advanced weapons to achieve victory.

But the lessons learned by the Americans in the past have aroused questions in Washington over whether to provide rebels with decisive advanced weaponry. Experience shows that American weapons given to Islamists will bring to power an Islamic authority that will later use those weapons against America.

The fact that war crimes have been committed in Syria without any country raising a finger should be of concern to Israeli citizens.

There is no doubt that if the Syrian hordes could, they would massacre us with even more brutality than they are currently massacring themselves. Israel must be very cautious when making dangerous concessions in exchange for international guarantees.

It is chilling to think there are still those in Israel who take seriously the idea of a binational state or the return of Palestinian refugees to inside Israel. In the Middle East, sectarian massacres are routine. Look at Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and even Egypt.

The silence of Raed Salah, a proliferator of stories about the “Al-Asqa mosque being in danger,” over the destruction of mosques in Syria is telling. The destruction of mosques in Syria teaches us what is waiting for Jews around the corner.

Hezbollah, whose fate depends on the survival of the Assad regime, may act in desperation against Israel, if only to aid Assad by creating a common enemy. Hezbollah is now threatening to plunge Israel into darkness.

It was a mistake to let wounded Syrians into Israel. This trickle may become a steady flow of armed refugees.

Israel must prepare for the arrival to its border of well-armed Islamic terrorists from the streets of Damascus.

The Palestinians are now escalating tension over prisoners held by Israel, claiming that Israel is rearresting individuals who were released in the Schalit deal. The Palestinian media is replete with claims of starvation and other lies.

The failure of reconciliation talks in Egypt between Hamas and the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the threat of Hamas taking over Judea and Samaria are not encouraging signs. Obama knows this.

‘Israel may create Syria buffer zone with local interlocutors’

“One of the defensive measures that we of course cannot rule out is creating a defensive buffer zone on the other side of the border, together with interlocutors who will have an interest in cooperating with us against other elements who threaten them too,” Maj. Gen. Yair Golan says.

Questions about Syria

March 26, 2013

Israel Hayom | Questions about Syria.

As Passover starts, there are a number of questions surrounding Syria’s civil war. What did Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have to gain by jumping to the top of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s list of enemies?

There is no explanation other than that Erdoğan saw Assad as an Iranian agent who deserved to have his regime undermined as part of the competition between Turkey and Iran for hegemony over the Middle East. Like many others, Erdoğan couldn’t have imagined that the Syrian civil war would still be going on in early 2013.

Erdoğan became entangled in the Syrian civil war and had no choice but to continue past the point of no return. In terms of the cost-benefit analysis, was it worth it for him to stand so strongly by the side of the rebels?

Israel doesn’t know which of the two options is worse: Assad or the rebels. On one hand, the Assad regime is an Iranian agent which plays an important role in supporting Hezbollah. On the other hand, it has maintained the cease-fire with Israel since June 1974, which is no small thing.

It can be assumed that the Assad regime will fall and those not forced to stand by him will flee his sinking ship.

Essentially, the U.S., Europe, Turkey and Israel have been more alarmed about Assad’s ties with Iran than the nature of the divided rebel forces. With the Obama administration in the midst of withdrawing from the Middle East, the U.S. has no intention of sending its own troops to Syria, except in a worst-case scenario. Therefore, the U.S. is training rebel fighters in northern Jordan.

The shared distress of the U.S., Turkey and Israel over Syria was the basis for the understanding reached between Erdoğan and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week. It would have been better had Israel agreed to apologize two years ago under a deal that Dr. Yossi Ciechanover reached with the Turks. But Netanyahu did not want a quarrel with then Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, so the deal was rejected. However, better to have reached a deal late rather than never, as long as Israel is certain that Erdoğan will honor his commitments and not find a pretext to backtrack.

There are already troubling signs. Erdoğan said that Turkey would only fulfill its part of the deal if Israel took certain steps. According to Erdoğan, Israel must remove or significantly ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip. But on this matter, there is no room for concessions. Israel must insist that its reconciliation deal with Turkey be implemented to the letter of the law. Israel has already paid the full price and it must demand the full return.

Iran confirms secret nuclear ‘Quds’ site

Images lead experts to warn Tehran may have bomb sooner than expected

Iran has inadvertently confirmed WND’s report that the Islamic regime is working on nuclear weapons at a secret facility known as “Quds,” a name synonymous with the Arabic word for “Jerusalem.”

A WND report on March 20 and a follow-up in the Washington Times the next day revealed that Iranian scientists are trying to perfect nuclear warheads at the underground site, which is unknown to the West. The coordinates to this vast site and detailed information about the regime’s secret operation were provided to WND by a high-ranking Iranian intelligence officer assigned to the Ministry of Defense.

Golpanews, which is associated with the Defense Ministry and is managed by Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammadi-Golpayegani, who heads the office of the supreme leader, published an article on Saturday under the headline, “New claim by America about revelation of Quds secret nuclear facility in Iran.”

The article quotes the information that appeared on WND: Satellite images reveal the existence of the secret Quds site, indicating Iran, with North Korean help, clearly crossed the red line and is in the final stage of arming its missiles with nuclear warheads; and Iran not only has made great progress in enriching uranium to weapons grade, but also has succeeded in converting the highly enriched uranium to metal, a key step in making nuclear warheads.

Although Golpanews calls the revelation the “West’s imaginary stories on Iran’s nuclear activities,” the report verifies the site by stating, “It is clear that the claim by anti-revolutionaries about the existence of the secret nuclear site, Quds, if correct, is nothing more than the situation with the Parchin site and that the Islamic Republic, based on its international obligations, is only after the science of enrichment and the usage for peaceful nuclear energy.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly requested inspection of the Parchin military site, where it is believed the regime has tested nuclear bomb components. The regime replied that military sites are off-limits and has stonewalled the IAEA for over a year while satellite images show a great effort to clean up the area.

Golpanews, with its connection to the highest levels of the Iranian government, is laying the groundwork for calling Quds a military site and therefore not accessible for inspection by the IAEA.

Also yesterday, Mashregh News, which is run by the Revolutionary Guards, bragged about Iran’s missile might and how missiles will rain down on Israel. Mashregh inadvertently revealed images of mobile missile-launching vehicles for the upgraded Shahab 3 missile, which explains the missile depots and garages at the secret Quds site. Hundreds of these mobile vehicles can launch ballistic missiles concurrently at any one target.

Quds consists of three facilities:

  • The first is where the regime’s scientists are enriching uranium to weapons grade. They already have enough plutonium for several bombs and are in the last stage of putting together a nuclear warhead. This site is called “Quds” after Jerusalem, as they believe soon Israel will be destroyed and Jerusalem restored to Muslim rule.
  • The second, which makes missile warheads, is dubbed “Marty Mughniyah” after the Hezbollah terrorist who, under the command of the regime, conducted multiple terrorist acts that killed hundreds of Americans and Israelis.
  • The third facility is a vast site that houses over 380 missile depots and launching pads.

David Trachtenberg, who has 30 years of experience in the national security policy field and who served as a deputy assistant secretary of defense, reviewed the imagery with a colleague with extensive knowledge of imagery.

“[The satellite images] suggest the possibility that Iran may in fact be further along in its nuclear weapons program than is generally assumed,” he said. “It is clear they have gone to great lengths to bury and protect high-value assets at this site, which also complicates the possibility of direct military action and illustrates the risks of allowing years to pass while hoping diplomacy will work.

“An accelerating train is harder to slow and takes longer to stop. These images reinforce my concern that Iranian nuclear progress is accelerating,” Trachtenberg said. “The more emphatically the U.S. declares its determination to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons state, the harder it may be to ensure that outcome.”

“Reza Kahlili (who wrote the article revealing the Quds site) has provided the West with one of the most critical pieces of evidence of the Iranian government’s drive to break out its nuclear development into a fully operational capability,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas G. McInerney (Ret.). “All the red lines have been crossed. Beware America, Israel and the West, a nuclear Iran is here!”

McInerney for 35 years served as a pilot, commander and strategic planner in the U.S. Air Force, including as deputy chief of staff for operations and intelligence, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, and also as vice commander in chief, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe.

Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, a congressional advisory board, and who has served on the staffs of the Congressional Strategic Posture Commission, the House Armed Services Committee and in the CIA, also reviewed the imagery and information from the source.

“This open-source analysis by itself illustrates that Iran is very serious about building survivable facilities for its nuclear enterprise,” said Pry. “If the Obama administration does not know about this facility, it explodes their credibility. If the Obama administration does already know about this facility, it raises even more serious questions. Have they told Congress about this enormous, heavily defended underground complex and its purpose? Why have they not told the American people? Did the president discuss this matter with Israeli Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu – along with his public claim that Iran is ‘more than a year away’ from a nuclear capability?

“Either way,” Pry concluded, “a nuclear Iran is such a grave threat to U.S. and global security that, at minimum, Congress should hold hearings on this matter, find out what the administration really knows and does not know, and whether their judgment about the ‘nuclear red line’ can be trusted to predict when it is about to be crossed.”

Ambassador Hank Cooper and Fritz Ermarth, experienced national security experts who played prominent roles in achieving victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War, reviewed the imagery on the new underground facility and the intelligence provided by the source. They both agreed with Pry’s assessment and called for congressional hearings. They believe such hearings should also seek to understand Iran’s underlying goals, its strategy to achieve those goals and appropriate U.S. policies and strategy to counter Iran.

Cooper led arms control negotiations with the U.S.S.R. during the nuclear and space talks and was director of the Strategic Defense Initiative. As an engineer, he helped design hardened underground systems. Ermarth served as chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which writes the National Intelligence Estimates, the most important analytical products of the intelligence community, and served as a special adviser to President Reagan.
