US supports Israel’s right to self defense – Israel News, Ynetnews.

“We strongly condemn the barrage of rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel, and we regret the death and injury of innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilians caused by the ensuing violence,” US State Department Mark Toner said in a statement.

“There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel. We call on those responsible to stop these cowardly acts immediately. We support Israel’s right to defend itself, and we encourage Israel to continue to take every effort to avoid civilian casualties,” he said. (Yitzhak Benhorin, Ynet reporter, Washington)

Egypt recalls envoy over IAF air strikes. Iron Dome hits 17 out of 50 missiles

Egypt recalls envoy over IAF air strikes. Iron Dome hits 17 out of 50 missiles.

Ahmed Jabari’s car hit by IAF

The Palestinians fired 50 rockets from Gaza Wednesday night, Nov. 14, after an Israeli air assault killed the Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari and destroyed a long list of missile sites. Iron Dome intercepted 17 of the incoming rockets against Beersheba (three salvoes), Ashdod and Eshkol. None caused casualties. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, after some hesitation, decided not to issue a statement on the Israeli operation. Instead, he recalled his ambassador from Tel Aviv and decided to call a UN Security Council session to stop “Israeli aggression.” The Israeli ambassador was summoned to hear Egypt’s foreign ministry. So far, Cairo has not acted to sever relations.

After confirming the death of the master-terrorist Ahmed Jabari, commander of Hamas’s military arm, Ezz e-din al-Qassam, Hamas announced: We are now at war with Israel. Jabari, 52, was killed by a targeted Israeli air attack in Gaza City. A key figure in the radical Palestinian Hamas movement, he was caught driving in a black Mercedes in Gaza City.
Hamas has announced a general call-up and threatened to respond not just with rockets but suicide attacks inside Israel. Its leaders warned that their Fajr-5 rockets had a range of 75 kilometers and could reach locations north of Tel Aviv.
Israeli sources say the air operation called Pillar of Cloud aimed at targeting more Hamas leaders, degrading its military infrastructure and demolishing its rocket stocks, especially the long-range Fajrs.
The Israeli Navy joined the air force in striking Palestinian missile sites in southern Gaza from the sea.

In their first report on progress, Wednesday night, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reported that the wave of Israeli air strikes over Gaza had seriously degraded the Hamas terrorists’ ability to conduct missile attacks on central Israel, despite a major effort to avoid harming civilians. “We are set to expand out counter-terror operation if necessary.” He said.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that most of Hamas’s Fajr rockets and their silos had been hit as well as many other strategic sites. Operation Pillar of Cloud had four objectives, said Barak: restoring Israel’s deterrence; seriously reducing the terrorists’ rocket arsenal; harming their high-profile leaders and restoring peace to southern Israel.
The IDF spokesman reported that reserve units are standing by in case a ground operation is called for by a Palestininan escalation. Special police units are on the ready in all parts of Israel for possible terrorist attacks.  Locations within 40 kilometers range of the Gaza Strip were advised to stand ready to take rocket attacks from Gaza until the Operation Pillar of Cloud was over.  All schools within rocket range of the Gaza Strip will remain closed Thursday and emergency services are on high alert. The million Israeli civilians suffering perennial Palestinian rocket assaults are advised to stay close to shelters for the duration of the operation.

Gaza terrorists fired a rocket at Dimona Wednesday, where Israel’s nuclear reactor is located. The rocket fell wide of its mark and caused no casualties or damage. Channel 2 said this was the first time a terror rocket was fired at the sensitive site.

Terrorists fired about 20 Grad Katyusha missiles at Be’er Sheva, after firing at Sderot and Ashkelon. There have been no reports of casualties. Iron Dome anti-missile batteries successfully intercepted most of the rockets fired at Be’er Sheva. One woman was reportedly lightly hurt in Be’er Sheva.

At least two rockets were fired at Ashdod. Iron Dome intercepted one but a second one fell within the city, in an open space. No one was hurt.

Rockets were also fired at Ofakim.

The IDF released video of a Fajr rocket being placed inside a concrete silo at an unknown date in the past. The IAF is believed to have hit most of the Fajr rockets that have been hidden in Gaza.

The IDF also released an aerial photo showing the proximity between a Fajr launch site and civilian structures, including a kindergarten.

The IDF is planning further operations into Gaza

The IDF is planning further operations into Gaza
IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Yoav (Poly) Mordechai held a press conference Wednesday night and addressed the military operation in Gaza. He said the operation was launched “After a long period of several years of unbearable fire aimed at residents of the south, which has intensified even more in recent weeks, including launches aimed at communities in the South and attacks against IDF forces.”

Mordechai said that so far, the IDF has attacked dozens of targets, and noted that “the IDF operates with pinpoint accuracy to try to make as clean a hit as possible, but unfortunately some of the weapons are located near kindergartens and mosques. An orchard is intende for oranges, not weapons, and a school is intended for studies and not weapons. A mosque is intended for prayer and not weapons.”

Mordechai said that he expects further operations in the coming days, saying, “We expect that in the coming days the challenge will be very difficult and there will be rockets shot at southern Israel. I encourage all members of Hamas not to walk around above ground.”

On its Facebook page, the IDF wrote, “We recommend that no Hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead.”

Below the message was a picture of Jaabari with the word “eliminated” stamped across it.

Ahmed Jaabari, head of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza Wednesday afternoon.

Hawks demand strikes on Hamas political leaders, far-left says assassination of terror chiefs will only yield escalation

Labor party Chairwoman Shelly Yachimovich (photo credit: Yoav Ari Dudkevitch/Flash90)across the spectrum Wednesday hailed the government’s decision to embark on a major air operation in Gaza and the killing of the leader of Hamas’s military wing, Ahmed Jabari. Only some on the far left condemned the Jabari assassination, arguing that targeted killings do nothing to advance peace and merely perpetuate the cycle of violence.

On the right, there were calls from some politicians for the killings, too, of Hamas political leaders. On the center left, by contrast, politicians said they hoped the operation would not develop into a wider escalation and ground war.

Less than 70 days before Israel heads to the polls, on January 22, most politicians from Israel’s mainstream parties hurried to comment in the media and release statements congratulating the IDF on its successful mission. Would-be returning politicians Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni also endorsed the resort to Operation Pillar of Defense to try to restore quiet to the south after the upsurge in Hamas-overseen rocket attacks this week.

“This is one of the days on which I am proud to be Israeli,” said Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein (Likud). “Israel at once restored its deterrence and proved to its enemy that it doesn’t only talk but also acts.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom (Likud) also praised the operation, and said that “all options are on the table” to stop the continuing rocket fire from Gaza.

Likud Environment Minister Gilad Erdan and Likud K Danny Danon said they hoped Israel would also strike at Hamas political leaders, including Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

Elsewhere on the right, National Union chairman Uri Ariel called on the IDF to expand its military operation. “Let the IDF win,” he said. “This pinpoint attack cannot be our final act. Israel needs to continue and hit the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip with all its might. The Israeli government must keep up the pressure until it topples the evil regime that is keeping thousands of Israeli residents from leading normal and peaceful lives.”

“I welcome this successful operation by the IDF,” said Energy and Water Minister Uzi Landau (Yisrael Beytenu). “We are talking about a fundamental change in our policy. No more mere responding, but a systematic targeting of all those involved in terror.”

Naftali Bennett, the incoming chairman of the Jewish Home party, posted a photo of Jabari’s burned out car on his Facebook profile, together with the words of the blessing thanking God, “who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.” He pronounced the same blessing when he won his party’s leadership race last week.

Some political analysts predicted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak will try to make political capital out of the operation. “The killing of Hamas’s military chief will be for Bibi Netanyahu and Ehud Barak like the killing of Osama Bin-Laden was for Barack Obama,” Haaretz’s diplomatic correspondent Barak Ravid tweeted.

But that tone was notably absent even among some politicians critical of the current government, who hailed Jabari’s assassination and were plainly anxious to stand with the perceived public consensus in favor of a robust response to the latest Hamas violence.

“This strengthens the hands of the residents of the South, of IDF soldiers and of the security agents,” said opposition leader and former IDF chief of staff Shaul Mofaz. “Israel must protect its citizens in any way possible,” the Kadima chairman said, adding that during his time as defense minister he ordered the elimination of Jabari’s predecessor, Salah Shehadeh, and that he would have given the same order today as well. “The entire last week I said that Hamas is responsible for the terror emanating from Gaza and has to pay a heavy price for this.”

Labor chairman Shelly Yachimovich called Jabari an “arch terrorist” who belonged to the most radical members of Hamas. He had the blood of many Israelis on his hands and his assassination was justified, she said. “Israel is united in its fight on terrorism,” she said, but added that Israel should move forward in coordination with the United States and the international community and seek to avoid further escalation.

Former journalist and Knesset hopeful Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) said killing Jabari was more than justified. “No country in the world would agree to or remain silence in the face of continuous rocket fire on its citizens,” he said.

Former foreign minister Livni also commented, congratulating the IDF and the Shin Bet security agency on killing Jabari. “It’s appropriate to assassinate the head of a terror organizations who is responsible for spilling the blood of Israeli citizens.”

Former prime minister Olmert, just back from the US, backed the operation, and ruled out discussion of his will he/won’t he political comeback while the operation was ongoing,

Politicians on the far-left, on the other hand, said that targeted killings are unproductive. “This will only lead to an escalation,” said Ahmad Tibi, of the Arab Balad party.

“I hope assassination will not lead to a further escalation that will cause the residents of the south unnecessary suffering,” said Meretz chairwoman Zahava Gal-on. “The only way to bring a viable peace to the residents of the communities surrounding the Gaza Strip is by arranging a long-term cease-fire and not by assassinations, he said.

Meretz MK Nitzan Horowitz explicitly called on the IDF to stop targeted killings in Gaza. “Enough with the circle of violence,” he posted on his Facebook profile. “No to another war that won’t achieve a thing.”

Meretz’s Ilan Gilon said that it was Israel’s duty to protect its citizens but suggested Jabari’s assassination was planned and executed with political considerations in mind.

MK Dov Khenin, from the far left Jewish-Arab Hadash party, said Jabari’s assassination was reason for grave concern. “When will they finally understand that after every killing comes the revenge, which is followed by a [military] response, and after that comes an operation, and that is followed by war?”

There was also some critical comment from the right. Moshe Feiglin, a far-right Likud member who unsuccessfully challenged Netanyahu for the party leadership several times, congratulated those who killed Jabari. “But our reaction must be proportional to what happened,” he said. “Strategically, this assassination changes nothing. All in all, we have now entered a new round of fighting. If we want to make a strategic change, we must first be convinced that we are right. We must internalize that this is our land. Not their land, our land. Yes, that includes Gaza.

“The ecstasy that Israel is broadcasting to the world right now paints the opposite picture and will bring about a further loss of legitimacy and deterrence,” said Feglin.

Obama says to make diplomatic push on Iran nuclear program

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Wednesday vowed to push for a diplomatic resolution to Iran’s suspected attempt to build a nuclear weapon, while restating his insistence that Tehran will never be allowed to acquire a bomb.

“I will try to make a push in the coming months to see if we can open up a dialogue between Iran and – not just us but the international community – to see if we can get this thing resolved,” he said.

“We’re not going let Iran get a nuclear weapon, but I think there is still a window of time for us to resolve this diplomatically,” added Obama.

There is nothing to be afraid of what may be in Dimona nowadays and I will not say anymore on this issue.

1.Israel has opened an operation in Gaza which may be the first accord of a wider war against Hamas, Jihadists, Hezbollah in the North and Iran to the East.
2.Israel has the capacity and the assets to conduct this grand scale war, if it will occur.
3.A ground operation in Gaza is possible if the jihadists are starting to target the cities in the centre of the country.
4.In this case, the hostilities wont stop like the last time – Cast Lead Operation .
5. Even prolonged and massive missiles launching can trigger the ground invasion of Gaza. In this case, the Army will seek to get rid of the Hamas and others in Gaza.
6.On the Northern Front, we expect Hezbollah to join the attacks against Israel and IDF is well prepared for this development. In this case, a ground invasion of Lebanon is to be expected after a short air campaign against the shiite militia.
7.In the later case, because a certain iranian involvement must to be taken into consideration, IDF will consider to refresh what seems to be postponed, the operations in Iran.

Sirens wailed in the city of Beersheba Wednesday night as residents across southern Israel took shelter from incoming rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. The attacks came in the wake of the assassination of Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari, which marked the beginning of Operation Pillar of Defense against terror targets in the Gaza Strip.

The Iron Dome system downed some 15 rockets over Beersheba and towns surrounding the Gaza Strip. All in all, over 20 rockets were launched by Palestinian terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, including seven long-range Grad rockets fired at Beersheba.

One rocket scored a direct hit on a store in the city, lightly injuring one woman. Another slammed into a car, and there were reports of damage to several buildings.

Residents of the south were instructed to remain within 15 seconds of bomb shelters or reinforced rooms.

Shortly after the assassination of Jabari, several rockets fell outside the coastal city of Ashkelon and in the border region of Eshkol.

In response to Jabari’s death, Hamas’s military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, had proclaimed that the “occupation opened the gates of hell on itself.”
