Sadly, this blog needs to continue…

February 2, 2009

Following the unilateral cease fire announced by Israel, and the general sence of euphoria enduced by the inaguration of Barak Obama, I was getting ready to close down this blog for good.

Sadly, I no longer think that is a good idea.  Events since then have shown that the cease fire isn’t holding and the war drums on both sides continue to beat ominously in  the background.  Hamas is giving credit to Iran for helping them “win” the war, while Israeli officials openly speak about the Gaza op being a preparation for a war with Iran over the next year.

Yesterday, four missiles and 14 mortars were fired into Israel from Gaza.  This follows the attack two days ago at the border crossing that killed an Israeli soldier.  Israel responded last night with air strikes and says they will continue.

In short, the war is far from over…

Three days ago, I traveled to Jerusalem to find out Dore Gold’s opinion of the success/failure of the Gaza op.  His sentiments are not that different from Natan Scharansky’s who I saw last night on TV.  Sharansky said that the deterent restoration that Israel accomplished could have been done in 3 to 4 days of fighting.  Why the operation dragged on for another week and a half without accomplishing anything more is a real question.

Sharansky blamed the political leadership for not having clearly defined their goals in the beginning and sticking to them.
