Iran unveiled a new fighter jet on Tuesday, state media reported, as tensions rise between Tehran and regional rivals over conflicts in the Middle East.
The Kowsar fighter jet was domestically produced in full, it is capable of carrying various weapons, and will be used for short aerial support missions, Tasnim news agency said.
The Iranian Defense Ministry has billed the Kowsar as a fourth-generation fighter, with “advanced avionics” and multipurpose radar.
State television showed live pictures of a ceremony in Tehran in which the fighter jet flew in the presence of President Hassan Rouhani, a day before the country’s National Defense Industry Day.
Iran has sent weapons and thousands of soldiers to Syria to prop up President Bashar Assad in the country’s seven-year-long civil war. However, due to the lack of a powerful air force, Iran has asked Russia to provide air power, which it did, starting in late 2015.
Iran’s air force has been limited to perhaps a few dozen strike aircraft using either Russian or aging U.S. models acquired before the 1979 Iranian revolution.
Iran unveiled in 2013 what it said was a new, domestically built fighter jet, called Qaher-313, but some experts expressed doubts about the viability of the aircraft at the time.
Iran has developed a large domestic arms industry in the face of international sanctions and embargoes that have barred it from importing many weapons.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday the country had to develop its military forces to prevent other states taking over its territory and resources.
“We should make ourselves ready to fight against the military powers who want to take over our territory and our resources,” Rouhani said in a National Defence Industry Day speech.

I would say this is a Northrop F5 – the jet was used in Vietnam ( by Vietnam).
It was a second class jet then – today its a joke..

Air force chief and air defense chief were removed two days ago and two months ago respectively, following rumours of two drones hovering over the leader’s office and also flight of several Israeli F35 over Iran. This show case happening just two days after the appointment of a new air force chief proves those rumours were correct.

Hope the ejection seats work well. This crate’s primary mission is internal propaganda and morale boost. Or, maybe it is intended to get a chuckle out of defense analysts.
