Liberals, drugged on power, suffer withdrawal symptoms

Liberals, drugged on power, suffer withdrawal symptoms, Washington Examiner, December 21, 2016

(Will we ever stop calling them “liberals?” They are leftists or Democrats, not liberals. The term “liberal” has been perverted into what it is not. — DM)

“Democrats had a knife, and the GOP had a gun,” writes New York Times columnist David Leonhardt, remarking in particular on what he views as disgraceful Republican abuses of power in North Carolina. Having lost the governorship, the GOP used the lame-duck period to pass laws taking power and patronage away from the victorious Democratic governor-elect.

Leonhardt’s broad point about general Republican excess is being made by many a liberal writer. It is a revisionist history put succinctly by Greg Sargent, a liberal blogger at the Washington Post, that the “GOP shreds our norms in [the] quest for power and Dems don’t.”

This is a deeply ignorant or mendacious view of political history.

We do not defend the Republicans’ North Carolina caper; we already criticized it in this space. But it is stomach-turning to see liberal horror that Republicans should resort to the same tactics Democrats used with gusto. If anything is more irritating than hearing partisans justify their behavior with “tu quoque” arguments, it is seeing a crop of liberal writers aghast that Republicans behave just as Democrats did for decades.

The last two times North Carolina’s legislature moved to strip powers from its governor, it was Democrats doing the partisan stripping and Republicans being stripped. It was also an abuse then, and North Carolina Republicans cried foul, not that anyone seems to remember their protests now. Gov. Pat McCrory and legislative Republicans were thoroughly and mercilessly schooled in the art of political warfare by their Democratic adversaries, and finally brought a gun to the gunfight.

Republicans win a few elections and suddenly it is shocking — shocking, we tell you! — that they deploy gerrymandering just as Democrats did for decades. Trump wins an election, and suddenly liberals worry that presidents might govern with pens and phones, and change national immigration policy by fiat.

Suddenly, “obstructionism” is no longer considered a legitimate excuse for a president to announce that his agenda is too important to wait for democratic constitutional processes. Suddenly, liberal writers fear rather than cheer the possibility that a president might start a ruinous and illegal war on his own personal say-so.

When you’re told everything in the political landscape is unprecedented and horrible, you are not hearing a good faith argument. You are hearing the symptoms of defeat. Beginning next month, Democrats will have less power at national and state levels than they’ve had since the Great Depression. They’re losing influence over policy across the map, and it’ll take a lot of political rehab for them to get over it.

If we live in “a new normal in which the America we knew and loved is gone,” perhaps it’s because these people were enjoying liberal abuse of power too much to apply the constitutional brakes when they had the levers in their hands.

No Dan, we will have to fight to take back ‘Liberal’ in it’s true meaning. Socialism requires the death of meaning, and if anything the word ‘Liberal’ is a sad example of their success in killing it.

    • Back in 2013, I confected the word “Librul” as an alternative. Sadly, it hasn’t caught on. How do you suggest we fight to take back the misclaimed word “Liberal?”

      • Mike Says:

Where do we start!? We have Useful Idiots running a Campaign on MTV saying things like “Can’t we all agree that ‘Black Lives Matter’ is not the opposite of ‘All Lives Matter'”? Of course we can… because it’s not! “Black Lives Matter” is a component, of “All Lives Matter”. But this is what passes for “thinking” when you desperately want to remain a Leftist and convince yourself you’ve won an argument.
I think we do what we’ve been doing and call them what they are.
Socialists. Patient Communists… and sometimes not-so-patient Communists. Fascists. Democrat Socialists. Remind them and anyone listening that their Socialist idols like Che, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro anon were Mass Murderers.

They require empty minds to house their ignorance. Our job is to provide them no quarter.

You are doing a fine job!

I had a strong discussion about this with some US citizens and Canuks where i live .

The knowledge about basic political terms and politics is amazing low .
, they are just parroting the MSM .

For me a liberal is somebody who believe or follows the teachings of liberalism .

I’ve been thinking a lot about this since Dan challenged me as to what we do. I’ve decided the only way to deal with this theft of meaning is to start labeling ourselves as Liberals. We should also employ, given the United States is still the most progressive forward thinking system of government the world has yet to know, label ourselves as progressive… enlightened… forward thinking… smart… educated… etc. etc. In other words take back the very descriptive words hi-jacked by the oldest and most dangerous Ideology in the world. By doing so, it would attract the useful know nothings because they don;t truly know anything… yet. It would also force the un-administrated (non-dialectic) discussions to “What’s the difference? What do these terms really mean?” which the Left has worked, and continues to work, very hard to avoid at all costs… as they know full well once engaged in them they look foolish.
So, from now on… I’m a proud Liberal!

I,am a proud conservative liberal, just waiting for the readiness of human kind for real liberalism .

          I know sometimes i,am a dreamer .

            misery loves company…
I think our numbers are greater than we’re allowed to know.

Human development as specie is a roller coaster ride with up,s and down,s , we are now in a down period .
That is not funny but necessary for progress, it seems we as specie need heavy contradictions to make progress .
Progress based on only an intellectual process seems still to be an impossibility, we as human kind still need the pragmatic experience of the senses and that is a costly process of resources .

We must arm our self ( intellectually and in other ways ) for the rapid growing world population , a world population who want to be take by the hand and guided trough life because they are told it is their birth right .

Individual freedom and collective responsibility is NOT sustainable, we must turn this around or we have to go to a full collective world population , ( it seems to me that it is the direction we are heading now )
For me a collective world population with on top a layer of decision makers is a abomination for human kind .
It will kill individual initiatives and learning two basic factors for a real development and understanding , the two basic factors what makes humans so different and their potential so big .

We need to explain that to our children that we as human kind are on a cross road .
Their choice,s will form our future .

Thinking about what i have written above the century of enlightenment in Europe came above .
And as you know that intellectual process was the start of the American revolution ( the big experiment ) and later the France revolution .

It can be done again .

My 10 cents worth of thinking from a Dutch deplorable .

Individual Freedom and Collective Responsibility are Mutually Exclusive Concepts. If everybody owns it, nobody owns it… if nobody owns it, somebody should. The idea, as you point out, that these two polar opposite concepts are presented as possible and intentionally confused by the ruling class is Socialism in a nutshell. It is the poisonous message the must nurture and protect in order to remain in control.
Sadly the French squandered their revolution by chasing equality instead of liberty. This proved a fatal mistake literally and figuratively.
That’s the only reason America stands alone… I wish it were otherwise.
In the end, the very abomination you identify has been the most resilient governing theory history has provided us.

Is it in the USA different ?
common core 2+2 =5 and you get an A for trying !
Perhaps change is coming , but it will take long and hard work to correct this matters .

          • Mike Says:

The USA has wandered very far from the founders intent… without question.
