Despite Obama’s insistence that Russia’s act of “weakness” in Syria is only supported by Iran and the Syrian government, more and more nations are expressing their gratitude for Moscow’s help in the fight against terrorism in the Middle East. Earlier today, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that his country supports Russia’s military involvement in the region:
“Russia’s entrance, given its potential and capabilities, is something we see is going to have an effect on limiting terrorism in Syria and eradicating it,” Shoukry said in a televised interview on Saturday.
This is surprising news because of Egypt’s close ties to Saudi Arabia, a nation that has been at the forefront of pushing for Assad’s removal.
Shoukry’s comments reflect the growing relationship between Moscow and Cairo. During a visit to Russia in August, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi endorsed Putin’s plan to create an anti-terrorism coalition.
The real war against terror continues to gain international support. Sorry, Obama?
