Putin ‘privately threatened to invade Poland, Romania and the Baltic states’

Putin ‘privately threatened to invade Poland, Romania and the Baltic states’
By Justin Huggler 18 Sep 2014 Via The Telegraph

(Joe Biden to Putin: ‘Mr. Prime Minister, I’m looking into your eyes, and I don’t think you have a soul.’.-LS)

President Vladimir Putin privately threatened to invade Poland, Romania and the Baltic states, according to a record of a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart.

“If I wanted, in two days I could have Russian troops not only in Kiev, but also in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest,” Mr Putin allegedly told President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine, reported Süddeustche Zeitung, a German newspaper.

If true, this would be the first time that Mr Putin has threatened to invade Nato or EU members. Any threat to send Russian troops into the capitals of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Romania would cause grave alarm among Western leaders.

If Mr Putin were to act on this, Britain could find itself at war with Russia. All five countries mentioned in this alleged conversation are members of both the EU and Nato. They are covered by the security guarantee in Article V of Nato’s founding treaty, which states that “an attack on one is an attack on all”. In a speech in Tallinn earlier this month, President Barack Obama confirmed Nato’s commitment to this doctrine.

Mr Putin’s alleged threat bears similarities to remarks he made to Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, in which he warned: “If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks”.

Süddeustche Zeitung claims to have seen a European Union memorandum of a meeting between Mr Barroso and Mr Poroshenko in Kiev last week, during which the latter is said to have described Mr Putin’s threat.

The Russian president made these remarks in series of telephone conversations with Mr Poroshenko over the current ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.

Mr Putin also warned Mr Poroshenko not to put too much faith in the EU, saying that Russia could exert its influence and bring about a “blocking minority” among member states.

On Tuesday, Ukraine ratified a historic Association Agreement with the EU, placing the country on the path towards eventual EU membership. It was the refusal of the former president, Viktor Yanukovych, to sign this agreement last year that triggered the Ukraine crisis.

The EU recently announced further sanctions against Russia, focusing on the energy, financial and arms sectors. But there have been divisions among member states over sanctions, with many worried about the impact on their own economies.

The Baltic states are particularly nervous about Russian intentions, and Mr Obama sought to reassure them with his speech in Tallinn earlier this month.

“If you ever ask again ‘Who will come to help?’ you’ll know the answer: the Nato alliance, including the armed forces of the United States of America,” he said. “We’ll be here for Estonia. We will be here for Latvia. We will be here for Lithuania.”

Mr Poroshenko is the only alleged source for Mr Putin’s latest threat, and there will be concerns he might be motivated to exaggerate in order to strengthen EU and Nato support for Ukraine.

The European Commission refused to confirm or deny whether Mr Barroso had held such a conversation with Mr Poroshenko. “We will not conduct diplomacy in the press or discuss extracts of confidential conversations,” said Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, the Commission spokesperson. “What matters to the EU and the Commission is to contribute to lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Ukraine.”

I just don’t think anything Obama says means anything…lets face it…he has lied about issues involving security for his own military, who is crazy enough to believe he has any commitment to NATO..words devoid of action are meaningless…Putin can take anything he wants..the US will do nothing except condemn “in the strongest terms” The good thing is he might not want the rest of Europe.

Hey Europe, start spending your own taxpayers money and spill a little European blood on your own defence. Stop expecting US taxpayers and American blood to bail you out time and time again.

John see it in this way : as long Europe is using the dollar as trading currency and buying USA bonds we want something back !

And we just using USA best export product, we want just the best for our assistance to keep the balloon full of hot air !

        • John Prophet's avatar John Prophet Says:

Joop, it’s time for Europe to srap on a set and deal with what’s in its own backyard. If America was having troubles in Central America would EUROPE coming running to help? FAT CHANCE!

        • Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

Granted, the EU buys US bonds and US products. But with all the expense involved in ‘leading the charge’ to war, the US dollar is under attack by other less stable currencies and is creating a ripe environment for rising inflation. Leading the charge in yet another war will blow the deficit through the roof and further damage all who base their trade on the US dollar….something our ‘friends’ in China and Russia would love to see. A little help would go a long way. Otherwise, we need to stay home, build up our missile defense like Israel, and heal our fiscal wounds.

Central Europe is strategical important for the US , Europe knows that, we are not dumb asses you know, we are playing this games a way longer than the USA.

In a deal both sides need some profit, Europe is keeping the dollar upright and the US trow protection into the deal, but we are getting some nasty feelings about that protecting thing .
It seems now that it is a bit more than protecting, more an offense thing, like poking the bear , we are not so charmed of that.

We do not like to be used as the battlefield between the USA and Russia !

I see your point Joop, but no one in the EU and NATO have been attacked…yet. But I’m sure if and when this happens (heaven forbid), the US will honor its commitment to NATO, whether Obama likes it or not. I agree with JP that the EU needs to shift from social spending to more military spending, something the US may need to do in the near future.

No one said you Guys are dumb, it fact you were smart to focus your monetary policy towards social spending as you counted on Uncle Sam to cover your backs militarily. All I’m saying those days are done. It was fun while it lasted but the game is up. Europe now needs to pony more up for their own defence.

During the Cold War Capitalism/democracy was able to spend on military and grow its economy for its citizens. Communism was able to build its military but not build a viable economy for it citizens, thus it finally imploded.

American capitalism nearly imploded itself in 2008 as even capitalism/democracy reached the breaking point of funding a world wide military and a strong economy for it citizens.
Many on this blog have said America is in decline. Well if it is (I personally do not believe it) it’s because it’s been try to hold the entire free world on its shoulders. No more, America will need to cut/streamline its military spending and the rest of the free world must pick up the slack. Europe you can no longer eat your cake and have it too.

          • Peter Hofman's avatar joopklepzeiker Says:

John, central Europe is now more important to the US than ever before , financial and strategical , if it was important from an all powerful position in the world it is even more important from a declining powerful position in the world, but there is a danger that Europe will be chosen as the battle field and we know that.

But i agree with you that the it is better for Europe that the next WW will fought out at USA soil, and that will happen if the USA pulls out of Europe .

At the moment i,am more afraid for the USA/Nato politics than from Russia .

The U.S. will “rebalance” its own shrinking defense dollars to allies and partners that share the security burden more equitably. Too many European leaders refuse to realize that this long-festering problem is having a dangerously corrosive effect on the Alliance.

          • Peter Hofman's avatar joopklepzeiker Says:

What is Obama’s real end game?

Now, for the first time, noted political strategist Dick Morris reveals Obama’s secret strategy in his powerful new book “Power Grab: Obama’s Dangerous Plan for a One-Party Nation.”

In “Power Grab,” Morris warns that America is at a crossroads — we can choose the path of the Founding Fathers and keep a strong constitutional government that thrives on our bipartisan spirit, or opt for President Barack Obama’s dream: a nation ruled by one political party with a far-left agenda.

Morris writes that almost all of Obama’s key initiatives and agenda items have one common theme: They seek to turn America into a banana republic ruled by one party, by putting the Republican Party out of business — effectively ending America’s long bipartisan system of government.

That’s the dire warning from best-selling author and political insider Dick Morris and his co-author, Eileen McGann, in their compelling new book that is gaining national attention.

The authors make a convincing case that Obama has an overarching strategy in pushing his liberal agenda — one that grabs power from our traditional and bipartisan institutions in favor of a single party: his Democratic Party.

Get your copy of Power Grab at a great price – Go Here Now

According to Morris and McGann, Obama has promulgated his plan by:

Implementing the biggest power grab of all, ObamaCare — one that creates a new, permanent dependency class
Pushing for “immigration reform” that will quickly tip the delicate balance of power in favor of Democrats, giving them a permanent lock on the White House
Pushing “red” states aside by gaining federal control over state-run education systems using the Common Core curriculum
Asserting more control over private business by granting the EPA global governance in the name of climate change, affecting every aspect of our lives
Blocking energy independence, thereby slowing economic growth and breeding more dependency
Gutting welfare reform and keeping millions on the dole
Turning over regulation of the Internet to the United Nations

The authors write: “Obama is a left-wing president who is desperately determined to impose his radical agenda to transform our democratic government and free market economy into his socialist-style ideal before leaving office in 2016. He’s a president who is obsessively fixated on keeping the left in permanent power by turning our two-party system into a one-party monopoly.”
He is close to achieving his goal, Morris and McGann warn. Only you can stop him.

The EU is destroying Europe by flooding it with Muslims (Eurabia).

Who can blame Putin if he doesn’t want the same thing to happen to Russia, or to fellow Slavic states, or to former fellow Soviet buffer states? And who would wish an EU style government on Russia? Besides Putin’s Russia of today is more like the Tsarist Russia of old, not the murderous Communist monster of 1917.

Putin has some legitimate security concerns in naval access to the Black Sea (Crimea). Maybe the EU and NATO should recognize that, live and let live, and don’t push Putin until there’s a nasty backlash.

Perhaps the EU might be partly at fault. There might really be expansionist forces at work in the EU that intend to chop Russia up into little pieces so they can steal it’s natural resources. Since the fall of Communism, Russia doesn’t look like it intends to conquer the world, just maybe secure it’s own existence and maybe ensure access to the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.

Not that Putin’s Russia is pure as the driven snow, it’s more like a big Mafia organized crime family, but the EU is part of the “one world government” program and the EU idea should be junked so the nation states of Europe can go back to being the national ethno-states they used to be, dedicated to the best interests of their own citizens, being free and independent, but just without the aggressive attitudes that led to two world wars.

The people of the world might be better off if they could demand that the power mad “one world government” forces agree to a truce for a while instead of the little Napoleans of the EU trying become a super power by conquering Russia or the little Tsar of Russian trying to conquer parts of Europe.
