The Iron Dome rocket defense system intercepted a projectile over Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening. No injuries or damage were reported.
Israeli television showed a double-burst of smoke in skies above Tel Aviv after air raid sirens sounded, sending residents running for shelter.
The Code Red siren sounded in all of Gush Dan, including the central Israeli cities of Petah Tikva, Lod and Givatayim.
It was the first Gaza rocket that reached Tel Aviv since Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Tel Aviv Municipality was instructed to inspect and open public bomb shelters in the city in order to “provide an optimal response for residents if necessary” in the event that escalations in the South reach the Center.
The Home Front Command also instructed Tel Aviv residents to prepare for utilizing protected rooms and shelters in their private homes.
Under the same instruction, the division responsible for civil security ordered for bomb shelters in Tel Aviv schools to be opened.
The IDF launched Operation Protective Edge in the early hours of Tuesday morning in order to quell the ongoing barrage of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.
Since midnight Tuesday, more than 30 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip have exploded in Israel.
Terrorists in Gaza have launched more than 250 projectiles at Israel in recent weeks.

“Askar warned, Hamas was ready for a protracted war with Israel which could last months or even years.”
In other words, Hamas hasn’t the means to destroy Israel, only the ability to be a big pain in the ass. Of course that all depends on how far Israel will go to end this once and for all.
It will be interesting to see who, if any, come to the aid of Hamas on the battlefield.

Me thinks something else might be afoot. Do you think Hamas got this going just to be destroyed?

It’s something bigger and Iran is at the core of the matter. ISIS is a big pain to Iran whether they admit it or not. Drawing Israel into the struggle could unite this ‘alphabet soup’ of radical muslim groups and transform ISIS into yet another proxy.
As for Hamas, they’re probably just pawns and could be sacrificed.

LS, could be option one, but my Money is on option two.

If my hunch is correct, we’ll probably see gradual escalation to slowly draw Israel into the fight. If Israel balks, a few more missiles over Tel Aviv will be in order. Then when Israel is fully engaged, another proxy will jump in. After that, all bets are off.
But then again, we may see Hamas take a beating and appeal to ‘international opinion’ to prevent total defeat, only to be repeated several years later. Especially if they can spin it as a victory like the last time.

It’s possible that Iran knowing the talks on limiting its atomic program is ending badly and fearing an Israeli attack, has decided to pin Israel down with one or more proxies.

Also today, the Israeli cabinet approved a request that the IDF be permitted to call up as many as 40,000 reserves,. Activation has begun.
