This all smells of rotten fish! I’d say to one and all, change your emails and abandon this site. It can no longer be trusted or considered safe !!! It is written!

Sorry about the ordeal. I recently had my mail server hacked by spammers and found over 80,000 outgoing messages in the queue before I finally shut down the server. I suspect one of the computers on my LAN got a virus and opened a backdoor for spammers to run mail through a legitimate email box on my server. Of course, the message properties were well cloaked and the exact source still escapes me today.

Defense, I have an idea for an article. Can you send me an email so I can reply with the draft for you to review?

John Prophet has always sounded a bit wacky to me. Can you say paranoid? Anyway, I hate to see that JW- my e-mail was once compromised in a similar fashion.

Sometimes hackers use brute force bot attacks to figure out your e-mail password. No way to keep it from happening. Just like anything else, let people know (like you did) and keep on going.

    PRIVATE MESSAGE FOR JW.

The following conversation I had with Steve may give you a clue on who “hacked” your email account or who spoofed your email address.

    Charles,

Can you forward it to JW? I might screw it up and everyone will see it. I just emailed JW at his ‘hacked’ account with all the info. He says on the site that it’s OK now. Posting a comment as well might be a good idea in case the email bounces. Anyway, I’ll catch up with you guys in the morning. It’s after 10pm and need some beauty sleep.

    Later,
    Steve V.

Nope, peterenfran@hotmail.com is Joop, I believe.
But since your email adress is known publicly he can send you a message.
Just post a comment on JW’s site for Defence to contact you.
Meanwhile JW has confirmed on his site that his email has been hacked.
There is a way to send a private message to JW.
    I simply paste it below.

    Cheers
    Manos

How to send a private message to Joseph.
As some of you have noticed, when you post a comment with more than two links it is automatically put in the moderation queue and is not published.
You see your comment and the notice ‘Your comment is awaiting moderation’. This means that your comment is not visible until it is approved by Joseph.
So, if you want to send a private message just copy the below text in the comments field and edit it accordingly. After you have posted your private message post a regular message without links so that you can be unblocked and comment as usual. Your private comment will be deleted immediately after it is read by Joseph, so that it will never become visible to anyone else.

Copy Text below and paste it ianto the comments field.

    This is a regular message.

  7. It would seem that someone was watching the site and seen that Joe was away for some hours then decided to send the emails hoping we would open them before Joe was able to warn everyone that it wasn’t from him.

    Weird goings on.

The emails were sent around 5am for me, and looks like an Argentinian hacker.

    • Naive’ people allow Linked-In, Facebook and dating sites to harvest their address books. When these sites (or anyone with your email address in their mail client) get hacked, your collection of addresses ends up in the hands of crooks.

  8. I opened the e-mail and got a “phishing” warning from Gmail. Stupidly, I proceeded and clicked on the link to open the referenced Google Docs message. My virus protection (AVG) detected a problem immediately and notified me that the threat had been removed. Despite my stupidity, no damage appears to have been done.

  9. Calm down. Change your password(s) and check your computers for keyboard loggers (Free version of Superantispyware works fine). Avoid using public wi-fi as they tend to be very insecure.

This sort of email hack happens to everyone sooner or later, John Prophet’s hysterical response is ridiculous.

  10. artaxes's avatar artaxes Says:

No need to get hysterical. Calm down everybody.
At worst someone knows the email address of some or many of us.
That doesn’t mean he knows our usernames, passwords etc.
Unless you clicked on the link in the fraudulent message no harm has been done to you yet.
I estimate that at worst someone compromised the security of max 3 persons.

JW, was your email account really hacked or did someone simply spoof your email address?
Any clues about how that happened?
    Any suspects?
Did someone examine the data (email headers of the fraudulent message, logs of logins etc.) ?

Meanwhile I suggest that everyone who got this message and anyone who comments here takes the following steps.

    – Change ALL your passwords for email and the account you use to comment on this site (wordpress etc.).
If you have multiple computers or devices use the one which is most secure for changing your passwords via web.
Use the safest possible configuration for your browser (for example disable all unnecessary browser plugins/addons).

    – To change the passwords in your client programs (your email program etc.) boot your OS in safe mode without network drivers.
Change the passwords in your client applcations and restart your computer in normal fashion.

That should be sufficient in most cases.
Of course you can do many more things if you suspect that your computer is directly compromised by malware etc.
A compromised computer does not necessarily have to do with this incident but it is generally good to make your computer as secure as possible.

    No need to panic.

    • Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

I have no idea what happened. My son tells me that this is a common occurrence and I shouldn’t think that it was specifically aimed at me.

Running the software I recommended cleaned out over 1,400 threats, so clearly it is something that needs to be run regularly. Some web sites apparently can upload this stuff.

It’s dismaying to have this happen. One feels violated.

I believe, however, that no real damage was done to me. I hope the same is true for anyone else affected by this.
