Happy Chanukah! The correct procedure is to recite the blessings entirely before lighting the lights. As with saying a blessing over food. We bless the food before we eat it, so as to thank G-d before we eat. Only the shamas candle, which is merely a messenger, a carrier of the flame to the lights, can be lit before the blessings for convenience.

(The Shehechayanu blessing is said on the first night after the blessings and then the lights are lit. On succeeding nights we omit the shehechayanu blessing.)

Also note that the menorah must be lit before Shabbos candles and before sundown on Friday afternoon. Other days of Chanukah we light after sunset with lights that will burn at least half an hour after the first 3 medium stars appear. A lot of people light with olive oil menorahs since they can be filled with enough oil to last a long time, depending on the design of the menorah. Candles often don’t, though Shabbos candles could be used as they burn a long time.

By the way, a menorah can be made out of anything if you don’t have one, tin foil, even holes in potatoes, as long as the flames form a straight level line. (Except for the shammas, which should not be on the same line and level as the lights, as it then confuses with the number of lights.)

Here’s the haunting Chabad melody for the Haneiros Halalu prayer, which is recited after the blessings and kindling:

I have a different opinion, the universal forces are not interested in procedures and or rituals but in a enlightened mind so we can see the light .

    JW, Happy Chanukah !

    I have a different opinion

And the tone in your reaction shows clearly a high level of self-righteousness.

let me tell you, you haven,t see the light and never will.

For me you are dogmatic as a moslim.

In respect to JW and the other people here i withhold me from further comments in this matter.

JW, Is there any likelihood that Netanyahu would strike Iran with the Israeli National Security team coming to the US, also with Chanukah and the holiday season? Are there upcoming weather concerns for the IDF/IAF? Does Israel believe that Iran can have a nuke ready in 30-60 days? Lots of questions I know, but really would welcome your perspective

      Candi…

I wish I had answers for you, but I’ve learned over 4 years of covering this topic NEVER to trust my own opinion.

I’ve been wrong so many times that I now understand why. I simply don’t have all the (secret !) information needed to make a reliable judgement.

The pundits who crow with certainty on the subject know too little to realize just how little they know.

The few knowledgeable people who make their way into the media invariably withhold judgment as I am doing now.

My recommendation is that you read the material posted here and form your own judgment.

After doing that seriously for a few months I have no doubt that you’ll end up exactly where I am. i.e. “Who knows? Not me…”

Of course it may be over before you get the chance to build up your knowledge of the variables…

      Who knows?

You may think your thumbing your nose at Jewish tradition is enlightened. In thumbing your nose at Jewish tradition you are thumbing your nose at JEWS which is ANTI-SEMITIC.

            David….

I checked this comment. You are of course entitled to your traditionalist opinion even though Ben Gurion wouldn’t have shared it.

How DARE you accuse someone of being Antisemitic because they agree with Ben Gurion!

Never mind that you are accusing one of the most pro-Israel and prolific commentators on this site, doing that to a newbie would be equally unacceptable.

This site has a strict “no hate speech” policy as well as a strict “no personal attacks” policy. You post definitely crossed the second line and is bordering on crossing the first.

I want you to stick around because I know how important the subject is to you, but you should apologize to joop and the board as your first post.

Because I needed to remove that vicious post of yours, I will need to approve your first comment before it will be shown. So if you make your apology and it doesn’t appear for a while it’s because I’m not at the computer to approve it.

    When We Make A Home

    Sadao Watanabe
[From Album : Good Time For Love]
    Lyrics by Richard Wittenmyer
    Vocal by Will Lee

    (A lovely home…..ooh….)
    When we make a home
    When our love has grown
    When all our apprehensions fade
    And we can say “forever”
    When we share our dreams
    Everything we own
    We’ll build a life together
    When we make a home

    * Safe and warm (Safe and warm)
    We’re sheltered from the strom
    (So we’ll happy together)
When we make a home together
    Love will last forever
    Now our love is young
    Facing the unknown (Forever more…)
    But we’ll find joy together
    When we make a home

    (A lovely home…..ooh….)
    When our hearts are one
    Though our minds are two
    When we can cherish everyday
And fill our lives with laughter
    We will dance and sing
    In the setting sun
    We’ve made a home together
When our hearts are one (* twice)
