Iranian, Russian leaders communicating by telephone, Kremlin says; in midst of American ‘rush’ to reach settlement with Iran, Israel carries eyes to Russia in final attempt to stop any agreement

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Monday there was a “real chance” to resolve the international standoff over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Meanwhile, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gears up for a visit with the Russian president on Wednesday, senior Israeli officials claim that with America deadset on reaching a deal with Iran, Russia is Israel’s last hope.
The Kremlin said Putin and Rohani had spoken by telephone at the Russian leader’s request, two days before negotiators from Iran and six global powers hold their next talks.
“…In the context of the Iranian nuclear program, Putin underlined that at the moment a real chance has appeared to find a solution to this long-running problem,” the statement said.

It did not say how Rohani had responded, other than quoting him as saying he approved of Russia’s contribution to the talks on Iran’s nuclear program. But the Kremlin added that Rohani gave a “high grade” to Russia’s role at the so-called P5+1 negotiations that besides Iran include the five permanent UN Security Council members, and Germany.
“We know that the Iranians are only a few months away from giving up hope on their nuclear program, if the sanctions were to continue; but the Americans are keen on reaching an agreement,” said a senior Israeli official close to the Iranian issue Monday.
Israel is frustrated by the Obama administration; even those in close contact with the White House find it hard to explain what Jerusalem calls “the (American) rush to reach an agreement.”
But Jerusalem has turned its eyes to the Kremlin, and now hopes that Netanyahu’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday will yield success.
The hope among the Israeli administration is that Netanyahu will convince Putin to postpone any agreement with Iran.
“The Russians have already surprised us in the past, and they don’t like the idea that America is the hero of this story. They also don’t like the idea of a nuclear bomb in their own backyard.”
Putin’s upbeat comments followed remarks in which a senior US official said it was possible a deal could be reached when negotiators meet in Geneva from Nov. 20, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also voiced optimism.
The last round of talks between Iran and world powers earlier this month came tantalizingly close to finding a framework agreement that would have suspended some elements of Tehran’s disputed program in exchange for partial sanctions relief.
The terms of the potential deal have been vehemently opposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some powerful members of the US Congress.
Netanyahu – who views a partial suspension of sanctions as detrimental to the negotiations – outlined his opposition to the agreement during talks with French President Francois Hollande on Sunday.
The Israeli head of state will continue his diplomatic offensive when he meets Putin in Moscow on Wednesday and receives US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday.

France? Saudi Arabia? now Russia? Hmmm…just skeptical I guess.
Iran’s Deal of the Century (catchy graphic):
November 18, 2013 at 9:58 PM
Very good graphic.
But in the end for Mr. Hope and Change only this will matter:
Obavez won’t have to use the military option.
Obavez gets a lousy deal that the main stream media will spin into a huge diplomatic success story.
What Iran does or doesn’t get doesn’t matter to him.
If Russia is Israel’s last hope then Israel is really desperate.
All this was pretty predictable.

‘…the national that built Iran’s nuclear facilities…’
I saw an article the other day about Russia’s plans to build yet another reactor in Iran. No doubt everyone saw this. It just blows my mind how twisted everything seems.

(Oops,,,that reply was for Mark.)
Good point AR. I read that Hollande is also facing domestic blow-back from the French people on his radical programs. Could be he needs a ‘win’ too.

Actually, he’s less popular that Barack Hussein Barry Sotero Obama, our very own Christian-Muslim Organizer In Chief and part time golf pro.

Don’t forget that Barack-whatever-the-f***k-his-name-is is also an expert skeet shooter.
Hollande is a socialist. And in the time-honored tradtion of all socialists he screwed the French economy even further with a 75% tax for the rich and other tried and failed recipes from the socialists’ cookbook.
Famous football players (soccer) and stars like Gerard Depardieu are fleeing France.
He FUCKED UP the French economy badly, which may be a good thing from the Saudi/Israeli perspective because he is desperate for foreign cash and foreign orders for the French companies.
Just recently I’ve heard a radio report from a leftist German station which praised the fact that in France some people can retire as early as age 55. Can you believe that? And then these stupid morons are wondering why the economy is screwed. Just recently the French credit rating was downgraded.
Doesn’t surprise me at all that his popularity is in the cellar.

Retire at 55? I’m 62 and still working. Retirement at 55 would have been nice. But for now, I like to tell people that I’m not ‘retired’, just ‘tired’.
November 19, 2013 at 12:50 AM
I want you to remeber: No bastard won ever early retirement by paying for his pension.
He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard paying paying for his pension.

Not entirely true AR. I know several folks who were very successful and retired in their 50’s without anyone’s help.

Putin may well treat Netanyahu with more respect that the Muslim in the WH but that’s about it.
I wouldn’t hold my breath expecting the nation that built Iran’s nuclear facilities to play any sort of role in stopping them.
I feel like we are in some sort of strange waiting period that has proven years longer than expected. But it won’t be much longer until the s*** hits the fan.

Putin is not trustworthy and he is not about to alienate Iran, a client state and partner in crime for Israel who has been since its inception a U.S. extension in the Middle East..Of course he will exploit the schism between Israel and the US.And yes he will accord more respect to Netanyahu than Obama ever will.Israel is alone in this one. And it cannot forget that.Well,it has God with it like it always has.

Here’s a headline from the Russian media today:
“France makes historical mistake blocking Iranian nuclear deal”
http://rt.com/op-edge/france-blocking-iran-nuclear-talks-892/
So Netanyahu clearly can’t expect any help from Russia.
November 18, 2013 at 11:11 PM
I could be off base here, but I suspect the vast majority of time that Netanyahu spends talking to Hollande and Putin behind closed doors this week will not be spent discussing the talks that are doomed to fail, but will instead be spent discussing the war to come.

The Deal Matrix
November 18, 2013
By Artaxes
As the nuclear negations with Iran are going on, let us consider the possible outcomes.
The table shows which outcome the major parties would agree upon and whether they have the capability to enforce the outcome of the negotiations.
A ‘+’ means that the other negotiating parties cannot override the ‘vote’ which means there must be an unanimous vote.
A ‘-’ means that a particular party can in no way force the others to respect their ‘vote’.
A ‘?’ means that is not clear whether a particular party can force the others to respect their ‘vote’.

No Deal, continued talks

No?
Since Israel is not involved in the negotiations it has no voting power whatsoever.
Israel would accept a good deal or no deal, with the negotiations declared a failure and with no more talks.
An end to the negotiations with not deal would give legitimacy to an Israeli strike while an endless continuation of the talks without results would complicate things further and would give Iran additional time to advance their nuclear program.
The US under Obavez will avoid a fruitless end of the negotiations like the plague because then it would have to use the military option or add another broken promise to Obavez’ record and destroy US credibility and prestige.
That is why the US will keep the negotiations alive at all costs if necessary.
For the Iranians only a bad deal (from our point of view) or endless talks are acceptable.
Endless talks would hurt their economy because of the sanctions but it would make it more difficult for Israel to attack them while they negotiate.
They could live with an end of the negotiations but the sanctions would keep hurting their economy, that’s why they’ll try to avoid ´such an outcome.
In contrast to the Iranians the P5+1 has to agree unanimous to a deal.
Even if we assume that France would completely represent Israel’s position it is not clear whether they can force the others to end the talks or if the US can force the others to continue the talks
From my point of view it is most likely that if no deal can be reached the talks will continue indefinitely.
What is Netanyahu waiting for? I can’t understand.
There is no way that the talks will result in a deal that is acceptable for Israel.
And it is very unlikely that the talks will end in failure if no deal can be reached because Iran and the US will keep the talks going.
It is rather more likely that the US will decouple the nuclear issue from the rapprochement (read appeasement) that it wants.
They could start separate independent negotiations while keeping the P5+1 track alive as long as necessary.
The nuclear issue could be declared an issue that has to be resolved independent of rapprochement.
Why is Bibi waiting?
Either he has a BIG ace up the sleeve or he has totally screwed up.
And by big ace I don’t mean some military wonders but a diplomatic ace because by now we can be pretty confident that the IDF can do the job.
It’s the polticial and diplomatic environment that causes all the problems. That’s where I see Bibi’s failure.
Something like the French surprise is the kind of thing we need now.
I believe that Israel will act militarily if there is no other choice but absent this big diplomatic/political ace the costs of doing so will be tremendously high.
