“Fatwa-Compliant Iranian EMP” is a horrifying contribution to the understanding of what an existential threat we face in EMP weapons, but a few things seem glaringly absent from this analysis.

First, any North Korean EMP preemptive attack on the South or Japan that would disable their military capabilities would also collapse their civilian economy. Although there might not be any instantaneous civilian or military casualties, there would be casualties within minutes, hours, days and months. With a fully collapsed civilian economy probably ninety percent of the population would eventually be dead within months or a year. This would mean the remaining Japanese or South Korean or Western military forces would have nothing to lose and so a counter-strike would assure that North Korea would cease to exist.

Second, also, although a small battlefield EMP might allow Iran to conquer the Saudi’s without many American casualties the consequences for America and the West would be so catastrophic there would be a huge incentive to respond by obliterating Iran immediately in one fell swoop with a country destroying EMP attack of our own that would eliminate all of Iran, both military and civilian, so that the US could reclaim and begin rebuilding the oil fields of the Middle East unhindered by any further Iranian interference.

Third, the next step in this type of escalation is for Iran to forget about tactical EMPs and go straight for the headshot, a single EMP lofted over the central United States by an Iranian scud missile from a garbage scow loitering off the Gulf coast of Texas. Although again, Iran would be obliterated, American subs would still be able to retaliate and probably not just against Iran but against anyone who threatened to interfere with the long term rebuilding of America.

‘Best if the Iranians never get the bomb.

It was a huge mistake to negotiate with the North Koreans all the way to the bomb, development of which still continues. It would be an even bigger mistake to allow the Iranians to continue development of their nuclear weapons.
