Fears over Israel influenced MPs in Syria vote

Fears over Israel influenced MPs in Syria vote | The Jewish Chronicle.

( Our British “friends” are actually worried that if attacked by Iran, Israel might use it “as an excuse” to take out Iran’s nukes.  Says it all… – JW }

Parliament’s rejection last night of possible British military action in Syria followed hours of debate on the use of chemical weapons.

MPs defeated a government motion and led Prime Minister David Cameron to rule out British involvement in potential US-led strikes.

Among the contributors to the earlier debate was Labour’s Manchester Gorton MP Gerald Kaufman, who said Israel’s past actions should be taken into account.

Sir Gerald, whose comments were echoed by fellow Labour member Paul Flynn, said: “Israel used white phosphorous in its attack in Gaza in Operation Cast Lead – I saw the consequences for myself when I went there – but Israel gets away with it because it is on the right side of what is regarded as civilised opinion. There is selectivity right the way through.”

Many MPs considered the possibility of Israel being drawn into the Syrian conflict if military strikes were taken against President Assad’s regime.

Labour’s Preston MP Mark Hendrick said: “The Israelis will be looking, at some point short of Iran’s having developed nuclear weapons, to possibly take matters into their own hands.

“Indeed, if the situation kicks off with the western intervention in Syria, and Iran responds, and if Syria responds with an attack on Israel, that could be the perfect excuse for the Israelis to try and deal, not only with the WMD question and Syria, but also the nuclear question and Iran. We need to take these things into consideration before we decide.”

There was a “unique duty” for Britain to protect Israel, Ben Gummer, Conservative MP for Ipswich, told the House of Commons.

Bob Blackman, the Tory Harrow East MP, warned of the potential damage to the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks if the conflict escalated.

Hendon MP Matthew Offord intervened as Respect MP George Galloway spoke. Mr Offord asked about comments made by Mr Galloway on Press TV.

“One constituent claims that he said that Israel supplied the chemical for the attacks in Syria,” said the Conservative MP. “I find it very hard to believe that [he] said that.

“Would he like to take this opportunity to refute that claim or to provide the evidence to satisfy my constituent?”

Mr Galloway had said last week, on the programme he hosts on Press TV, that his theory was that Israel could have supplied the gas used in the attack in Damascus last week that left hundreds dead.

In response to Mr Offord he told Parliament: “That just shows the unreliability of green-ink letters, whether they come in the post or by e-mail. I said no such thing.”

The Bradford West MP later took to Twitter and wrote: “I see that malignant tub of lard [Adam Boulton, Sky News political editor] has joined the Hendon-Israel brigade.”

A number of Twitter users claimed Mr Galloway had lied to the Commons and called for action to be taken by Parliamentary authorities.

I’m ashamed to be British! Syria is the “Iraq” of the non-interventionist.

  2. Why is the House debating Syria and not Iran?

Is the House of Commons abdicating its duty regarding the Iranian nuclear threat?

Such a lack of professionalism I have never heard or seen in the international politics and military issues. And, be careful, its not only Obama who are we talking here about. The British PM, he didn’t think it to its deeps? What the hell these two sorry clowns thought to themselves? We’ll arrive into the area with our mighty air sea power, we’ll bomb the shit out of Assad, what can possible go wrong?
If the Syrians will bomb Israel we’ll ask Bibi to stay quiet – like in 1991, The Gulf War – and let us to finish the job in Syria. But they are idiots if they thought like that, because Bibi answered: ” Hm…to hold my beautiful, black, energetic horses? May be, but I have a little condition.” ” Everything you’ll ask its yours” answered the two clowns in one voice. ” I want you to take care of the Iranians, too and if not, let us doing that job, if missiles will start to fall here, in Israel”. The two clowns looked terrified one at each other and, without a word, they leave Bibi wandering what he could ask so heavy for the two friends to run like hell from him. Next day after that little discussion, Britain was kicked off from the Syrian Masquerade and Obama is already talking about a ” discrete military strike”.

What happened was that both USA and Britain got finally the idea that Israel can solve its problems if others will cause it problems.
And not USA, neither Britain want even have that in their dreams.
What, they are saying to themselves, we cannot just punish Syria without taking into account an Iranian intervention and an Israeli response? Hm…we must go back to mother, the kids here are too tough for us.

I don’t think the situation is as clear-cut as you say Luis. A little hesitancy in this sudden rush to war might actually be a good thing. The situation on the ground is changing rapidly. We have so many countries to deal with in this matter, including Israel’s defense. Heck, the logistics covering such a large area must be staggering.

Obviously, we haven’t convinced everyone Assad is the CW culprit. The best intelligence we have is from Israel. While we value Israel’s input highly, others may believe it to be a lie to push the US into war with Israel’s enemies. A little independent verification would go a long way.

No, I don’t think Israel is being cut off. I feel the Pentagon convinced the president that more assets need to be in place and multiple defense systems need linking and activation. Obama is obviously speaking out of his ‘political head’ and the Pentagon is having to give him a lesson or two on the reality of the situation as well as the type of attack and the objective in this deadly matter.

Even Israel needs more ‘gas masks’ as we speak and this will take a little more time too. Preparing millions of people is not a small task and takes time. More international approval would go a long way as well, but that takes time too.

Honestly, Assad is a goner. He’s lost all validity as a leader. Pretty soon he will become a political ‘hot potato’ to the rest of the world, Russia included. A little PR strategy on the part of the West could work wonders against Russia, China, Iran, and whoever else calls themselves an Assad supporter. Look, if Obama can wage a campaign to discredit the GOP, he can surely do the same for Mr. Assad. Of course, he should have been doing this for a long time now.

Frankly, I was a bit surprised about the 3am – 6am deadline which not surprisingly passed without even a whimper. Obama is still ranting he will go it alone if necessary, but hopefully clearer minds are holding him back for now.

Meanwhile, everyone can remain on high alert and if Assad strikes out against anyone else, then all hell will break loose post haste….and rightfully so.

Steve, no matter how you’ll name it and no matter how you’ll look at it, the western ”powers” just made foul of themselves, they lost
a l l of their remaining credibility and honor and that means they are terminated in front of the Iranians and their allies. ”Heck, the logistics covering such a large area must be staggering”, you said.
That is true, especially when you have started a war with for vessels.
Its about time to face it, Steve: the bluffs don’t work anymore. Even not for some 17th century fanatic mullahs; or despite of that.
Now, let us just sit back on our comfortable chairs and give Obama a chance to show to an entire world his new military approach:

” the discrete military strike ”.

        • Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

Ain’t gonna happen Luis. The US military will not stand for it. If they’re ordered to engage, they will be driven by the action on the ‘battlefield’. They already planned for this contingency. You can bet on it. You’ve got to know that no matter how discrete and politically acceptable Obama wants this action to be, Syria and the rest of the gang will escalate with a response and the US military will respond in an appropriate and non-discrete manner.

The forces arraid against israel have been growing in strength yearly. This trend will only continue. Two things are clear to me.

      1. Israel is a slice of a country and though it military might is considerable, it is finite. It can only manage so much.

      2. There’s not a lot of support out there for Israel. Witness the Brit vote. Israel should have taken things into its own hands years ago. I fear now it may be too late.

More than 100,000 Iranian soldiers and civilians are estimated to have been victims of the poisonous gas used by Saddam Hussein during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War. Many are still suffering the long-term effects of chemical agents.”

A true prophet should know that prayer is ALWAYS an option.
Usually the best option, and a true eternal endeavor, the time and effort invested in which is never lost.
Aside from that, one should not be so hasty at lamenting (or rejoicing depends who!) the demise of the Israeli nation.
Divided in opinion on many matters as we may be, when push comes to shove every sane Israeli knows that we are a nation with it’s back against the wall, absolutely nowhere to run, and a very real live existential threat banging on it’s borders on every side.
And we are poised and ready to engage and destroy that threat at any given moment. As ready as we can possibly be.
Today, however, more than ever in light of the events of the last few days, we see many great nations who seem to be in very dangerous denial and confusion regarding the very real and existential threat which faces them. And that situation, in my opinion, is far more hazardous than that of the Israeli’s.
Because the enemy is like water. He will find the easiest direction of movement, and move he will. He will find his way out, he will find his way in, and he will overcome. Unless, of course, he is stopped.

If the western powers wont act, seriously – even that the UN inspectors report wont be conclusive – then Bibi will have a hell of a case in front of the same impotent west: Syria possessed WMD and made use of them against its own people, women and children, with no mercy and no human values. And you, decadent civilization of the west were idle, inactive and ridicule. So, when the hour of truth will be near and they will have The Bomb, who will be here to stop them? But we already know the answer to this one. Anyhow, this last circus did achieve something, after all: if one damn sunny morning we’ll be waking up and never hear about Iran again, nobody will complain in front of us what we did, how bad we are for the international community ”interests”, because they just demonstrated what class are they a part of: the losers class.

So, John Prophet, you may be happy hearing that Netanyahu is already preparing his new speech / statement in which he will point out the fact that only us can be the masters of our destiny and nobody can preach to us what to do or not and why and when, because our own existence is at stake here and we already have seen how the western powers are ”dealing” with an aggressive Islam and its WMD. And his case against Iran only got more strength. The action against Iran should get a go now.

    • John Prophet's avatar John Prophet Says:

Perhaps, but how much Israeli blood and treasure will be spilt because of delay. This war will be fought on top of Israel with the Israeli population In toto in harms way on the front lines. How many will die that did not need to if only matters were dealt with years ago when
things were.. let’s say, less complicated.

    • Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

“Impotent west” “decadent civilization of the west” “losers class”

Ouch Luis! Please lighten up. As an impotent decadent member of the west loser class, I say chill out my friend. I know you’re frustrated as hell, but no one in our neighborhood (Israel included) has been attacked yet.

Preemption is a hard sell and is available to anyone who can justify it. Ask George Bush. He preempted Iraq. Not only that we took down Afghanistan, took down Libya, gave the Taliban holy hell while driving them out of power, gave Kuwait back to its royal family, maintain an ongoing war on Al Qaeda, provide military support and defense for damn near all the Mideast, keep the oil flowing to the rest of the world, developed the technology to drill for the damned stuff in the first place, and work to snuff out radical Islam in damned near every other shit hole in the world.

      • Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

        Steve….

Why take offense? Luis wasn’t talking about you or the rest of the American public. He’s talking about the bought-out benighted leadership that afflicts the US as well as the rest of the “free” world.

When the “bottom line” is paramount, you can forget ethics or even long tern self interest. All that matters is the next quarter.

The approach that destroyed American industry is now finishing off the American political system.

Israel would have to be literally BLIND DEAF AND DUMB to rely on the US for anything involving their security.

It makes me sick to my stomach to write this. I’ve worked hard to defend America with my creative optimism, but this episode has squeezed the last drop out of that.

        FUCK IT!!!!

        • Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

No offense taken JW. Only objection. Just for record, nothing personal either. I happen to like Luis. I just feel I’m a part of America for better or worse. I also share your frustration, but still damned proud of the good ole USA. Just too many damned stupid voters who lack the motivation to educate themselves on the issues and rely on the leftest media to tell them what to believe. As a democratic republic, we are all responsible for the crappy leadership in this country. Therefore we are all responsible to educate other voters to effect change for the better.

Ethics is a victim in this country, I agree. God is systematically eliminated from our public life and, as a result, immorality along with self serving behavior is on the rise as is evil throughout the rest of the world. Hmmm…maybe we could start something like “Prayer Without Borders”..ha.

The US political system is under attack in America. As predicted, folks in our 237 year democracy have figured out they can vote to raid the treasury. American industry, however, is not dead by a long shot.

The gross domestic product (GDP) of the US constitutes over 21% of the entire world’s GDP. That’s twice as much a China’s, yet everyone says China will outpace the US soon….bullshit. And when Obama is out, the economy will come back so strong it will make everyone’s head spin. A lot of business investment is sitting on the sidelines and waiting for that very day.

I know of no one who has changed in their opinion about Israel. As far as I know and have read, nothing’s changed regarding the US support for Israel. Monetarily, things might be down a bit, but that’s because folks are still raiding the treasury. There’s still a lot of US troops and military hardware in your backyard too. Haven’t seen any orders to draw down anything as of yet. Let’s see…..

I remain bullish on America. We are working hard to take it back to what it was and can be once again. All is not lost, not by a long shot. Call it a retreat if you may, but please don’t call it over.

  7. Galloway is an idiot. He’s like those white kids trying to be black, only he wishes he was Iranian. Ignore that clown. But we’ve all been talking about the Commons vote here at work (I’m in the UK), and everyone seemed glad it got voted down. No one here wants another war; Labour knew it and won the vote. But the US doesn’t need the UK for what they plan to do. And those Typhoons will likely remain in Cyprus – if things kick off Britain will then have to get involved.

    To Louisiana Steve:

In the last years, while we wrote and debate here, we also learned something about each other and I know well how you are against sacrificing American young lives for fighting others wars, far from home. I think – if my opinion worth something – that you are completely right on that, so lets drop expressions like ”you’re frustrated as hell” because frustration is not the correct expression in this case. I’ll tell you what is the expression that might characterize my mood right now and try not to take it personally – because I’m not speaking about you, not personally and not in general.

The expression is ” disgust ” . Disgust in front of the West hypocrisy, disgust in front of the west cowardice, disgust in front of the western powers lack of resolve, facing problems which need responsibility, which they don’t have.

And where stands Israel in relation with all those failures of the west? They put insurmountable barriers in front of us every time that the Iranian issue came up; in the last years, it was a well known fact
that Israel is ready to deal alone with the Iranian problem, but the same ”powers” who are going to ”operate militarily discrete” regarding Assad, the same powers are vetoing us, are leaking critical info regarding our preparations, are bulling us, are treating our PM in an unacceptable manner and yes, is Obama The Precious I’m talking here about.

We don’t want, under any circumstances, that foreign blood should pay for our covenant with God, for living here, in this land of ours, making good of a great Promise. Our blood and our sons and daughters are paying with their blood our Covenant with God from the dawn of the civilization. We have paid a very high price already for being His chosen people, but hope never abandoned us. We prayed and paid when the Temple was destroyed a couple of thousand of years ago, we cried : ” Hear Israel, our God is The Only God!” in the front of the crematories, we survived Hitler, we came back Here and build our Home again and we are fighting our righteous fight and we’ll prevail, because God will never forget Israel, His beloved son.

  9. Norm's avatar Norm Says:

Not to lessen the disgust that will all feel but in our hearts we all knew that sooner or later we Jews will stand abandoned by allies and alone. I am sure that the IDF prepared for this moment.

    • Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

I’m disgusted too Luis by Obama’s behavior, but show we where the US has dropped Israel’s security and defense from the agenda. I mean, just because we don’t fly off to an all out war and bomb everyone who is a threat to Israel’s security does not mean we are not committed to Israeli defense.

Also, please don’t refer our President as ‘Obama the Precious’. I prefer ‘Barack the Bastard’….ha.

      • Luis's avatar Luis Says:

…it was more like in ”The Lord Of The Rings” spirit when I named Obama as Precious. The creature Golomb named The Ring that name for the first time. I just cannot have enough of that movie, that’s all. But, isn’t Obama a Precious?(hehe…)

  10. Nothing is going to be done about the Iran nuclear issue. The west and Israel will not act militarily. Bibi has been going on about it since 1991. And with west inaction over Syria Iran will forge ahead.
