DUBAI – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief warned a US military attack on Syria would lead to the “imminent destruction” of Israel and would prove a “second Vietnam” for America, according to an Iranian news agency.

Shi’ite Muslim Iran, an arch-enemy of Israel, supports Syrian President Bashar Assad against mainly Sunni Muslim rebels trying to oust him in a two-and-a-half-year-old revolt.

Iran has blamed the rebels for a suspected chemical weapons on August 21 that killed hundreds of civilians. Opposition activists blame Assad’s forces, Washington has agreed and US President Barack Obama made the case for a limited military strike against Syria in response to the chemical attack.

Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said in an interview late on Wednesday with the Tasnim news agency that a US strike on Syria would not help Israel.

“An attack on Syria will mean the imminent destruction of Israel,” Jafari said, according to Tasnim.

The interview was widely picked up by Iranian media on Thursday. Tasnim, which launched in 2012, says on its website that it is devoted to “defending the Islamic Revolution against negative media propaganda”.

Jafari, as quoted by Tasnim, also warned the United States that it risked embroilment in a costly and protracted struggle if it intervened in Syria.

“Syria will turn into a more dangerous and deadly battlefield than the Vietnam War, and in fact, Syria will become the second Vietnam for the United States,” he said.

I remember the Cuban missile crisis. Pretty scary and I thank God that Nikita Khrushchev blinked first. Hope this won’t happen again with President ‘Blinky’ in office.

I as well remember the Cuban missile crisis. Pretty heavy game going on at the time. Mainly between USSR and USA. This little barn dance, however, has more moving parts which is a concern.

No, sir. The message here is: ” If Israel will touch Iran, Israel will be destroyed.” Eh, those happy days…where are they now? When everything was quiet and we, here, were writing complex analysis when Israel will attack Iran, how that will be done and where…And we could continue to be quiet, cozy and happy if that idiot in that morning didn’t decide to grow the daily doze of toxic gas for those poor unsuspected people in the suburbs of Damascus. And those nasty, nasty Al Qaeda…very good in the media sort of thing they are.
Horror photos of dead people because of war poisoned gas where around the world in a nick of a time. Imagine that: A beautiful morning in Tehran, and the sun just started to smile to Khamenei who has just wake up. He didn’t have time even to speak to anyone in that morning and his tea was already cold when he got those photos straight between the eyes.
He is an old fox, this Khamenei: he understood very fast where all this can lead. ” Come here, Jafari.” ” Yes, excellence ?” ” I want to issue a new threat to those tiny Jews in Israel.” ” But why, my liege ? As nasty as they are, a big quiet is now ruling in their land. Why should we wake them up? They even might just forgot us.”
” Oh, you don’t get it, do you? ” cried Khamenei. ” After those dead people photos, our ass will be again in line. Who is advising in Syria? Who is fighting in Syria? Who is killing their people? Who induced Assad Jr. to sign a devil pact with us? Its us, stupid, we always have been. And now, after Syria will be our turn. So, issue that threat to Israel. We are in business all over again”.

I see a big new concern. The UN inspectors finish their work and say yup poison gas for sure but inconclusive as to who did the deed.

If only proof comes from Israel, how many in Europe say REALLY and slam on the brakes!!!! This leaves Obama naked and out on a very thin limb.

  4. John Prophet's avatar John Prophet Says:

Me thinks the UN might want to stop events even if it knew the truth and said inconclusive anyway.

According to DEBKA, “Obama is stalling in order to buy time for Secretary of State John Kerry to strike a secret deal with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: the US would soften its strike on Syria, reducing it to a token blow, following which the US and Russian presidents would announce the convening of Geneva-2 for ending the civil war.”

Disinformation, saving face, or an end to the war. It’s anyone’s guess. Frankly, I don’t see the Russians caving on this one. Especially if it’s to save Obama’s political ass.

I do, however, agree with Luis. Iran got the threaten Israel with impunity and reaffirm her ties with Syria. Meanwhile the centrifuges are spinning and no one in the international community seems to give a crap anymore.

As for the Russians, I don’t think they will take being bullied politically very lightly. If they go alone with Obama it’s probably because they stand to lose something of monetary value in Syria in the event of an attack. Makes you wonder just what kind of infrastructure and investment the Ruskies have in place in Syria.

If I were an Israeli, I would be very happy about such comments from the Iranians.
And I would also pray that they really mean it and that this is not the standard rhetorical BS from Iran.
Because, if they are serious this would be the perfect justification to take Hizbollah out once and for all.
This would make a later strike on Iran much more easier.
They can play this card only once.
