Syrian activists said at least 213 people, including women and children, were killed on Wednesday in a nerve gas attack by President Bashar Assad’s forces on rebel-held districts of the Ghouta region east of Damascus.

The death toll was collated from medical centers in the region, Bayan Baker, a nurse at Douma Emergency Collection facility said. Activists said rockets with chemical agents hit the suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar and that those killed were in the hundreds.

The reported use of the chemical agents could not be immediately verified. It coincides with a visit to Damascus by a United Nations team of chemical weapons experts.

Activists posted a video on YouTube purporting to show the victims of the chemical attack laid out at a local field hospital.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of people were killed, including children, in a fierce bombardment. It said Mouadamiya, southwest of the capital, came under the heaviest attack since the start of the two-year conflict.

It called on the UN chemical experts and international organizations to visit the affected areas to ensure aid could be delivered and to “launch an investigation to determine who was responsible for the bombardment and hold them to account”.

Syrian authorities and rebels have accused each other of using chemical agents in the course of the civil war, in which 100,000 people have been killed.

This just doesn’t pass the smell test. Assad has no need to use chemical weapons when he just about has this war won, and even if he were going to use them, he certainly isn’t going to do so when a team of UN chemical weapons experts is going visit Damascus! If an attack actually happened, I doubt Assad was behind it; this smells like a fumble fingered attempt to illicit a knee jerk reaction from idiot bleeding heart westerners, to suck the US into another quagmire in another Middle Eastern cesspool. I don’t think it’ll work; Americans don’t want anything to do with this mess.

Whether Assad was responsible or the rebels were, doesn’t matter at this point. Either way this will be viewed as a tipping point. Also, regarding your statement:

“Americans don’t want anything to do with this mess”

When was was the last time the desires of ordinary citizens from any country, for that matter, had any effect on what the powers that be desired?
