Short-term risks to Israel are on the rise, and the seeds for new threats are being planted in some arenas, OC Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi warned on Tuesday.

He spoke during a ceremony marking the completion of an intelligence course for officers.

While acknowledging that in the long run, the winds of regional events “might bring opportunity and change,” Kochavi said that for the time being, Syria furnished the “most disturbing example” of risk.

It is attracting “thousands of radical jihadi activists from the area and the world, who are basing themselves in the country, not only to topple Assad, but also to promote the vision of an Islamic religious state,” he said.

“Before our eyes, a global jihadi center is developing on our doorstep, on a large scale, which might influence not only Syria, and not only the State of Israel, but also Lebanon, Jordan and the Sinai Peninsula, and could impact the whole region,” Kochavi said

I warmly recommend this wiki article to all those who want to get the big picture on Syria: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Syria
From the deeps of the ancient history, Syria was an embattled region, with uncountable wars, ups and downs and revolts and sectarian conflicts. Today, Syria is in one of those storm stages and this must be understand as a part of an historical process and not something unusual. However, the jihad black hole which has opened in Syria in the last two years can make a serious impact in our region and might demand an Israeli intervention in case of an aggressive behavior of those jihadists toward Israel.

Exactly as I said not too long ago; If Assad were to fall, what would replace him would most likely be a radical Islamist regime dedicated to jihad against Israel and the west, which, in the long run, would be a greater threat to Israel than Assad ever was. Fortunately, at the moment, it looks as though Assad will indeed win the war, which is probably the best outcome for this mess; Assad’s control over the country will continue to be very wobbly for a long time, and he’ll have more than enough work do do restoring order and rebuilding the country; he won’t be in any position to cause trouble to anyone outside of Syria for a very long time.

What was almost deadly for Israel it was the axis Iran-Assad-Nasrallah; this axis is broken today, thanks to those jihadists who are dealing serious damage to Assad’ forces and are also decimating the Hezbollah fighters. We, here in Israel, are considering sending to those jihadists some champagne in de lux package, because of the marvelous job they are doing in Syria right now.
