U.S. military action against Syria would carry the risk of inadvertently hitting a chemical weapons site, President Barack Obama told to PBS television in an interview on Monday.
“Have we mapped all of the chemical weapons facilities inside of Syria to make sure that we don’t drop a bomb on a chemical weapons facility that ends up then dispersing chemical weapons and killing civilians, which is exactly what we’re trying to prevent?” AFP news agency quoted Obama as saying during the interview.
Obama further expressed skepticism over whether setting a no-fly zone or waging a major military offensive against Damascus would save lives or change balance of power on the battlefield.
Supporters of a bold intervention in Syria failed to understand the complexity of the situation as there is no one simple solution, Obama said. “If you set up a no-fly zone, that you may not be actually solving the problem,” he added.
Obama’s show of skepticism over military action in Syria comes after his deputies announced plans to arm vetted Syrian rebels last week.
When asked to respond on calls to shut down Syria’s combat aircraft with American air power, Obama said “the fact of the matter is for example, 90 percent of the deaths that have taken place haven’t been because of air strikes by the Syrian air force.”
“The Syrian Air Force isn’t particularly good. They can’t aim very well,” he said, adding that most of the action was taking place “on the ground.”
He also said the possibility of creating “humanitarian corridor” to safeguard civilians in areas controlled by the opposition, would require bombing raids that could kill more civilians.
“Or if you set up a humanitarian corridor, are you in fact committed not only to stopping aircraft from going that corridor, but also missiles?
“And if so, does that mean that you then have to take out the armaments in Damascus and are you prepared then to bomb Damascus? And what happens if there’s civilian casualties?”
Syria chaos can’t continue
While explaining the complexity of military intervention in Syria, Obama said that “ongoing chaos” cannot continue in Syria.
“We can’t have the situation of ongoing chaos in a major country that borders a country like Jordan which in turn borders Israel,” he said, adding Washington has “serious interests there and not only humanitarian interests.”
Obama against sectarianism
The U.S. president in the interview said he opposed siding with the Sunnis in the Syrian conflict as some voices in the region have demanded, saying that would not serve American interests.
The two-year Syrian conflict that has killed at least 95,000 people is increasingly polarizing the region between its two major sects, Sunnis versus Shiites.
The Lebanese Shiite group, Hezbollah, played a key role in supporting Assad regime, which is mainly controlled by minority Allawites, a sect that is an offshoot from Shiite Islam. Meanwhile, Sunni clerics legitimized jihad against Assad regime last week especially after Hezbollah made it public that is in Syria and backing the Syrian troops against rebels.
Obama said the U.S. administration wanted to see a tolerant government in Syria that was “not sectarian.”

Do you remember Max Headroom? I always think of him when Berry makes a speech.

You must warn people before you are joking in such a manner. Max Headroom? A killer one.

Consider this: Striking Syria will involve the risk of striking by ”mistake” WMD sites and spreading those substances might be lethal for the people there and those are the Obama’s words, more or less. But now, a big question arise: If Obama is planning, together with Israel, to hit those sites in one ”rainy day” how exactly did he plan to do it? Or, in this case, the substances simply wont do any harm? Or is he BSing us now, trying to ”explain” us why is not worth to strike Syria? Let me be very clear: I don’t want to see americans messing right now in this ”holy war” but seeing this president argumenting in such a manner is an insult to the human intelligence.
June 18, 2013 at 6:06 PM
That’s puzzling to me too Luis. Why are we worried about accidently striking Syrian WMD sites all of a sudden? All this caution can only mean something else is afoot. I mean, afterall, Fedzilla hasn’t been too truthful lately as evidenced by all the scandals surrounding Obama’s administration, the IRS, NSA, EPA, Dept of State, etc etc etc ….ad nauseum.

In my opinion, Obama turned into a joke. And you know what? I believe that he doesn’t know too much from what is happening around him. He has some buffon teams in the White House that are doing all the hard work – and the mistakes – while he is busy enjoying some golf or simply enjoying doing nothing. We know who are the strong men – or, the strong women – in the House. It suits Obama: all of his life, the mother figure was very dominant .Now, he got two of them.

That’s right. What we have here is a total lack of leadership.
June 18, 2013 at 7:17 PM
Its far beyond the leadership that we are talking about here. Its simply the fact that the ”king has no clothes”.
June 18, 2013 at 6:54 PM
…and really sorry for this, but what is a meaning of : ”“We can’t have the situation of ongoing chaos in a major country that borders a country like Jordan which in turn borders Israel,” . Do you get this?
I think that the most important issue here is that Syria borders Israel a n d Jordan, and not the fact that Syria is bordering Jordan, which ”in turn” is bordering Israel. From this quote from the president words, one might draw the conclusion that Obama doesn’t have a clear image about the map of the Middle East. Or is all about that geography class that the President simply missed back in the days?
June 18, 2013 at 7:21 PM
Some people figured that out when Obama opined that those folks who live in Austria speak Austrian. We knew then that he was historically and geographically stupid.
June 18, 2013 at 7:15 PM
We can say, with big confidence, that almost every sentence Obama said in this interview was a catastrophe for the president. We are not sure that the article reproduced exactly what Obama has said; in case it is correct, then we have a much bigger problem than we thought in the first place. Look, for example, at this pearl: “The Syrian Air Force isn’t particularly good. They can’t aim very well,”. Any commentary here will be unnecessary.
June 18, 2013 at 7:57 PM
Never mind that such an air force is producing a lot of collateral damage but we know that ‘they didn’t kill many’.
Someone should tell this moron of the strategic value of air superiority. He got his lessons about air power by observations of flying golf balls.
He can get way with it because of one fact only.
In the future historians will discover that obavez broke a new era of political strategy.
This strategy is called: Gaining excrement superiority.
Excrement superiority is gained by controlling the media in such away that you can drop any bullshit without being questioned hard questions by them. They simply repeat the BS unquestioned and unchallenged. Others will correctly remark that.it was not too hard for him to achieve excrement superiority because a lot of the media (and also the media consumers) were already so dumbed down anyway that they could not put up an effective defense.
But all will agree that his brilliant strategic use of excrement superiority allowed him to drop BS with imppunity and that he broke a new era in political warfare.
June 18, 2013 at 7:50 PM
This kind of BS reminds me why Iran would never bomb Israel: because the radioactive cloud would affect palestinians as well… so they would never, ever do it, right… right?
(the antidote for this BS is remember what good old Golda said to us: they hate Israel more than they love their children)
June 18, 2013 at 11:48 PM
Actually, this is very simple to explain; this is (another) case of Obama’s mouth writing checks his @ss can’t cash, so now, he’s walking it back. It would’ve been wiser if he’d never said anything about “red lines” in the first place. Amature hour at the White House.
