Army Radio report says first presidential visit aims to ensure the prime minister won’t initiate attack on Tehran’s nuclear program

Barack Obama will be making his first presidential visit to Israel next month primarily in order to tell Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in person to hold off on any military intervention in Iran, it was reported Sunday.

Quoting unnamed Israeli sources, Israel’s Army Radio said the president would indeed seek to host some kind of summit meeting between Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and possibly Jordan’s King Abdullah, to try to re-energize the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

But the key reason for the visit and its timing, the report said, is that Netanyahu cited spring 2013 in his speech to the UN General Assembly last fall as a notable deadline relating to thwarting Iran’s nuclear drive, and the president wants to tell the prime minister face-to-face that the time is not yet ripe for military action. “Obama fears that the prime minister will decide to strike in Iran now, at a time when he is backed by a new government and can set up a new security cabinet in which two reported [ministerial] opponents of military intervention — Dan Meridor and Benny Begin — will no longer be present,” the Army Radio report said. Meridor and Begin both lost their Knesset seats in the January 22 elections.

Obama will reiterate US determination to ensure that Iran does not attain nuclear weapons, and will remind Netanyahu that the US has military “capacities” that Israel does not possess, the report added. New Secretary of State John Kerry said last week that the diplomatic option remained open, but that all other options were also on the table.

“Obama decided to come himself and deliver to Netanyahu the direct message, ‘Don’t strike at Iran. Let me oversee the contacts with Iran as I see fit. If necessary I’ll take action against them. We have capacities that you do not have’,” the radio report said.

Netanyahu told Sunday’s cabinet meeting that the upcoming visit was an important reassertion of the strong US-Israel alliance. He said he and the president, when discussing the trip in a phone call two weeks ago, agreed that it would focus on “Iran’s attempt to attain nuclear weapons, the instability in Syria and its implications for regional security, and efforts to advance the diplomatic process between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Uzi Arad, Netanyahu’s former national security adviser, told Army Radio that the notion that the Obama visit would be focused primarily on Iran made sense since that was the most urgent regional challenge — “a race against time” — followed by the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, with the Palestinian issue “the least urgent.” Arad said he did not know whether Obama was coming to say precisely what the unnamed sources were asserting, however.

The radio report said Obama could have discussed Iran and all other issues with Netanyahu in Washington, DC, in early March, when the prime minister is likely to attend the annual policy conference of the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC. But the president preferred not to be dealing with Netanyahu amid the AIPAC gathering, the report indicated, where the White House fears that Netanyahu will deliver “an aggressive speech on Iran.”

In interviews last week, US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro said the Obama visit was a sign of unshakable US-Israel relations and an opportunity for “consultations” on key regional issues, notably including Iran’s nuclear drive, the collapse of the Assad regime, and Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.

Bah. I wouldn’t put it past Obama to actually do this for real. Look at his appointments for state and defense. Two clueless idiots that would hand over everything to the enemy. Kerry and Hagel. One that betrayed his fellow soldiers and the other a clueless pacifist (AT DEFENSE no less) that wants to unilaterally disarm America.

Can you say abject failure in the face of determined foes?

Just thought of an outrageous but very cool theory.

Could it be that Hagel is part of the disinfo?

Obama’s so much smarter than Hagel it always made me wonder, “Why do you want “HIM?”

Remember how happy the Iranians were to hear he’d been picked?

Are we that good? Are we out manipulating the professionals on the other side.

Probably not, but I enjoy contemplating the possibility…

I believe that President Obama primarily understands that a large majority of Americans are demanding that America gets its budgetary problems under control. He has every intention of cutting our huge budget deficit as part of his presidential legacy. However, his intention is not to cut one cent from domestic entitlements (in fact, he wants these programs expanded), but by slicing and dicing the military budget. President Obama has no desire to enter into any foreign war that will by necessity add many billions of tax or borrowed funds to the military budget.

Secondarily, he would love to be crowned as the man who brought peace to the Middle East. But he knows that is not going to happen, and he is coming to Israel to demand that Israel ignore its enemies, their threats and Iran’s nuclear weapons. Israel can live peacefully under the American defense umbrella just like the free world was defended by American forces during the cold war. This is baloney because there is no comparison between the cold war, the concept of mutually assured destruction, and today’s Middle East. Additionally, and this cannot be understated, old fashion isolationism is growing by leaps and bounds in America.

My friends, I work on elections campaigns and provide political consultation on my local governmental level. I have no special insight into foreign, intelligence or military affairs. But I strongly feel that President Obama is coming to Israel to smile, make you feel like you are loved, and as we Americans say, blow smoke up your ass (go look that one up).

Oh I believe it, JW. Our nation’s leader is doing everything he can to destroy America, make it a socialist and communist nation, and bite Israel in the butt. He has made it perfectly clear that he does not stand with Israel. Including having a pic taken of himself a while back on the phone with Netanyahu with his feet up on the desk..showing from the angle of the bottom of his feet, with a small, separate picture of Netanyahu on the other side of his feet. Living over there, I am sure you are perfectly aware of how big of an insult it is to display the bottom of your feet publicly, or in the presence of someone. He hates Israel and stands with the Muslims. Thanks for posting this article.

    • Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

      Lyn…

Israelis don’t give a damn about shoes. That’s an Arab fetish.

Obama has so far presided over a failed presidency given loud and empty accolades by the MSM.

I disagree with your belief that he is trying to take the country socialist. A quick look at how he gave Wall Street a “Get out of jail free” card is an opener. Appointing GEITNER!!!! QED.

At this point, it’s unclear to me whether he’s come over to Israel’s side, though I suspect he has. He DOESN’T want to go down i history as the President who let Iran get the bomb.

He’s green lighted us on Syria and had his Ambassador announce that his trip to Israel concerns Syria and Iran rather than the “peace process.”

I know I’m susceptible to misplaced optimism.

In this case, I’m just reading the tea leaves…

      • Lyn Leahz's avatar Lyn Leahz Says:

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. But from what I’m seeing here and what is happening to us, I can honestly say that is what we are experiencing.

About his shoes, I read a lengthy article from a Jewish publication about it several months ago. I do not remember which one it was. I’ll look for it. Anyways, in the article, it was a message to the Muslims that he has no respect for Netanyahu… and though Jewish people do not care about the bottoms of shoes (I already knew this), Netanyahu know that Muslims do. It was just another one of his small digs to show his disrespect.

He is taking our guns, like Hitler. Destroying our economy. Socialized our healthcare. And more. I work in the health care industry ,and believe me, I see it first hand, and many of my clients, who are elderly and disabled, do not like. They are not getting the care they need.

I am glad you like him, however, many of us who are true Americans do not because he is taking away our freedoms. I enjoy your website, and don’t mean to irritate you..as every time I comment, you seem irritated at me in your reply. I’m just stating my thoughts, my opinions and my experiences as living from the American standpoint over here at this time and what many of us who are living it are feeling, and how it is affecting us.

Obama can put on whatever act he wants..but he is not your friend, or ours. He will turn on your quickly and stab you in the back. Just wait. You will see.

      • Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

        Lyn…

        Irritated? Hardly…

Your support means so much to me and all Israelis who are looking down the barrel of radical Islam potentially backed by a nuclear Iran.

I loath Obama… But from the “Occupy Wall Street” side of the opposition rather than the “Tea Party.”

For me he is what the Commies used to call a “running dog” for the real power. The 1%.

I don’t think there’s a conspiracy. It’s not necessary. It’s now the SOP in our suborned system of democracy.

In any event, I hope I can have my own opinion here without making people feel I am attacking them.

All rational opinions, not based on hate or full of antagonistic and useless invective are welcome.

Thanks for your comments, Lyn. Please keep them coming…

Certainly. I can’t find a Christian way to say it any better..and I don’t curse, so I apologize. But you sound pissed sometimes. It’s probably just one of those email/online things because you don’t me, and I don’t know you..and i can’t hear your voice or see your face. I have no problem agreeing to disagree…to be honest. All I can tell you for sure is you don’t do everything you can to show hate for a nation, including sticking your nose in where it does not belong, such as his trying to tell Israel to give up some of their borders, and so forth, and then wake up one day and say, “Oh, I think today I will be their friend. Yes! That is what I will do. I will be friends with Israel today!” I know that he does not have good intention toward Israel. He is full of himself, which I think you conveyed in not the same words, and he is behind the Muslims because he is one. Peace X

The US military is moving into the 21st century, witness the extensive use of drones and the secret military shuttle that has already had two flights into space. This trend will rapidly expand over time. The US can focus inward and still carry a big stick internationally without commitiny huge ground forces. The way things were done in the past is quickly fading into history. The technological edge the US has on the world is colossal and that will only expand into the future. Time to start thinking forward, and out of the box!

  7. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

Good evening everybody. Very interesting stuff for me to read tonight and I have a hunch that this is only the beginning. However, as someone who knows a thing or two about the israeli ”politics”, living here, in Israel, for more than twenty years -24, to be more exact – I wish to make some observations, if I may.

    1. Regarding the Army Radio reports, the things are more complex than many know. The Army Radio which in hebrew is named Galei Tzahal is considered here , in Israel, as a leftist radio station, by the majority of the political observers. In 1991-1992, Ehud Barak attempted to close this radio station because its anti establishment political comments; lets not forget, in Israel, The Army is considered the holly of hollies and its universally accepted that IDF should be the heart of the israeli consensus and not be involved into the political mud.
So, when Galei Tzahal is coming out with this statement / report, we should be able to read before the lines, between the lines and after those lines. What they really are saying is: ”Look, Bibi, don’t even think to fart in Iran’s direction because O’mama is arriving here and, hehe, we cannot wait to see how you’ll be doing”. They are sure and even want Obama to make a hell for Bibi. All the left wants that happen, by the way. From their point of view, Obama is their messiah and Obama knows that.

    2. Regarding Obama and his nominations, the things are very serious here because a leader can be judged by the people he choose in important, key positions. Lets face the truth: Obama was and he still is, an inexperienced american president and we can see this in all the fields he ever touched. An intelligent and good man in such a position and laking the necessary experience, if such a man should be the president, he should take care to make strong nominations and having strong strategists as advisors to compensate his own less experience and leading America and its brave nation on the right path.
But not Obama, of course. Naming weak people in strong positions for being able to blame them lately, this is the Obama’s ”strategy”. This is the strategy of a weak man and he is the president of America, for God sake!

  8. Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

    Luis…

Are you saying that Galei Zahal would report a story like that without getting clearance from the censor?

I have difficulty believing that. Who are the “sources” they quote anyway, and why are they putting out this line?

    It literally REEKS

  9. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

There are situations, in Israel, when ”they” are using ”intended disclosure” or ”adlafa mehuvenet”, in hebrew. In this case and in according with our understanding, Galei Tzahal could use any political left source- which they did- to create a certain atmosphere and making a statement. The censor won’t play any role here, because its not an official statement by the Army. This is a political phrase, formulated by a very political radio station, the goal is clear, is from the left and this is what this story is all about.
