Boeing has successful tested an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) missile that turns “science fiction into science fact” and could be the doomsday weapon against Iran, but media have largely ignored the development.

The U.S. Air Force and Boeing demonstrated the device more than two months ago over a military site in the Utah desert, reported the VR-Zone technology website.

Boeing did not keep the test a secret, but most mainstream media and technology sites overlooked the report.

The test was codenamed CHAMP — Counter-Electronics High Power Advanced Missile Project and was the first time a real EMP missile has been tested with positive real world results.

One of the most startling developments in the research and test is that the missile system does not use any explosives, thereby limiting damage to its intended goal of directing microwave energy that can cause instant blackouts.

Keith Coleman, who serves as Boeing’s CHAMP program manager in their Phantom Works division, stated that video camera showed “images of numerous desktop computers running, and then suddenly all of them go out quickly followed by the camera going to black,” VR-Zone reported.

“We hit every target we wanted to…  Today we made science fiction, science fact,” said Coleman.

An Arutz Sheva opinion article in August mentioned Israel’s possible use of an EMP bomb against Iran. The report triggered a chain reaction, allegedly influencing U.S. intelligence sources who have since been quoted in several publications with doubtful assumptions that the article reflected Israel government thinking.

The London Times subsequently reported that an EMP bomb could cripple Iran by shutting down its electronics and sending the Islamic Republic “back to the Stone Age.”

EMP causes non-lethal gamma energy to react with the magnetic field and produces a powerful electromagnetic shock wave that can destroy electronic devices, especially those used in Iran’s nuclear plants.

The shock wave would knock out Iran’s power grid and communications systems for transport and financial services, leading to economic collapse.

….sending the Islamic Republic “back to the Stone Age.” Isn’t that what the mullahs want?

  2. They already have the stone age mentality

It appears this EMP system can pinpoint outages while preserving civilian needs for food and transporation, which is a good thing. Otherwise, a complete EMP attack would leave us with a population to feed. Then the leftist media would be all over it like flies on you-know-what.

I would suspect that Israel has a first generation EMP weapon such as the one outlined by Dr. Carlo Kopp at Air-power Australia. Much like a conventional bomb it destroys itself in creating the pulse. While not as accurate as what the video depicts, several well placed pulses could send the ayatollahs back to the drawing boards and render their major weapons systems inoperative. Turn out the lights then send in the commandos.

“Do you really think Israel doesn’t have something equivalent?”

If not, I’m sure they will have a bright new shiny package containing a case or two of the little buggers.

This is only a ”delicate” message from USA to the ”brave” Islamic Republic: come quickly to the negotiations table, they are saying or we have such assets and devices that your military annihilation won’t be a problem for us.

We can quietly assume that Israel has similar tools for special occasions but we wont really know until such an operation will occur .
With every step by which Iran is getting closer to their destination(a nuclear weapon) we are closer to an israeli operation.
The clock is ticking for Iran and they are calling the ticks by themselves.

    LA Steve:

    Check out this: http://www.ausairpower.net/E-Bomb-FAQ.html

I have emailed with Carlo several time on other things and he seems like a “guy in the know” I am sure you and I could find enough Radio Shacks between Biloxi and your neck of the woods to build one. We can test it when Mitch or Mary Landreu are on TV babbling 🙂

Thanks for info Doc. If we build one, let’s send it to JW. Seriously, I know an old Cajun boy who lives in the swamp just south of here. He built his own EMP device from parts he found at the local junkyard. He was a simple guy who hunted gators for a living. Anyway, I heard he could cook the danged things before even pulling ’em into the boat. Now that Biloxi is some place. I used to spend a lot of time in Waveland. Not the same after Katrina blew the Dock of the Bay Club away though. Hey, maybe if we could figure a way to send a ‘Katrina’ to Syria so there would be no need for an EMP. Hell, that would knock their lights out….or worse yet, we could send ’em Mary Landreu.

But what about underground facilities, buried under 10-20 meters of rock? I guess one could crack the rock before releasing the e-bomb.

Also, apparently reasonably decent Faraday’s cage protects from intense emp’s.

True, but we can look at the situation differently.
We recently learned about a hidden site. How many more are we not aware of? This goes against using pinpoint EMPs. A country-wide EMP would terribly weaken Iran’s military and police forces, and would facilitate the work of commandos disseminated to identify hidden sites and target them along with the known sites, after assessing if the EMP has managed to inflict permanent damage.

Sure, switch off their eyes, ears and mouths and let our bunkerbuster boys storm their nuclear lairs.

Not so good if the neighbours get their satellite dishes grilled too though. And it’d have to be a nuclear-triggered EMP.

I think it’d have to be a very localised pulse, with certain targets softened beforehand. And since that would not require GBU-57, Israel could pull that off by itself.

      • Kishonist's avatar Kishonist Says:

Personally, I do not give a damn about their neighbors and I would gladly send them all back to the Middle Ages, where they retarded brains truly belong. The disruption of oil production in the region would help fight Global Warming as an added benefit.
The real concern lies with US military bases close to Iran. Not that I care that much about these either.

What the heck would I do with an EMP?

Guys, it’s fun to speculate. I believe Israel has focused non-nuclear EMP weapons not because I’m privy to special info, but because Israel is the number 2 country in the world in hi tech. In the military field, it’s number one in some areas. (Iron Dome!)

I don’t kid myself though, and neither should you. Bottom line, we are all clueless about Israel’s capabilities and intentions, and that’s just how it should be.

The Syrian issue is the one loose cannon in our calculations. It may end up moving our attack date up.

Indeed, I’m hoping that Israel will provide the free world with the best Christmas present ever.

However, I’ve learned not to pay any attention to my hopes. It will happen when it should. Not before or after.

In the meantime, get back to decorating your tree… 🙂

Than god, we don’t know but our speculations serve useful purpose.
The more crazy ideas we put out, the more we keep the Iranians who are surely regular visitors here detracted from the real thing.

    Regarding this EMP-Article.
I think the US will not do anything against Iran. Neither will they use this to send any kind of signals to the Iranians.
For me this is all wishful thinking.

It’s very reasonable to assume, that Israel itself has EMP-weapons.
I don’t know how deep an EMP can penetrate but it can be used to great effect in the following way:

Detonate one or more nukes at carefully selected altitudes, so that they cover most of Iran without frying the neighbours’ electronics.

With communications, power grids, radars, air defense and electronics taken out and Iran technologically in the stoneage the IAF can operate practically unimpeted over Iran and bomb the fortified and unfortified sites as long as it is necessary.
Even sending airborne troops in should not be that much of a problem.
This would send the Iranian nuclear program more than a decade back.
In fact, the nuclear program would be the least of the mullahs’ problems.
In the ensuing chaos and anarchy they would be busy enough fighting for the survival of their regime.
In such a scenario Israel should go even further and decapitate the Iranian leadership and the top clergy as well as their top military command thus making regime change much easier.

The alternative would be, to just take enough of their infrastructure out by EMP-weapons to ensure the successfull destruction of their nucear sites and the decapitation of their leadership.
This would leave large parts of the country intact and make regime change more likely.

  12. Israel knows because of its small size that it must utilize “force multipliers”.

My gut feeling is that there are Dolphin submarines off the coast of Iran with EMP capable cruise missiles as I write this.

With all that’s going on now, Iran has got to feel the noose tightening around their neck. In effect, there are not many moves left on the ‘chessboard’. The next move could be Iran’s. Anyone seen any reports of unusual movements by Hizballah or Iran lately?
