The roots of this abnormal situation can be found in the so called ”Harpaz affaire” which was, to put it simple, a try from the military establishment in Israel to execute a ” putch ” and terminate the defence minister, Ehud Barak. Behind the putch were Ashkenazi – which was the chief of staff of the army at that time- Harpaz, a intelligence officer and close friend to Ashkenazi and the military secretary at that time. The putch succeeded only to hurt the nomination of the next chief of staff , Galant, who is an excellent strategist and a bitter enemy of Ashkenazi. This case is still under the investigation and has hurt The IDF pretty badly at that time.
