The Iranian foreign minister has proposed a “trade-off” in the country’s stand-off with the West over its disputed nuclear program, in an interview with a German news magazine.European Union ministers are due to meet on October 15 when Britain, France and Germany will press for tougher sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and financial institutions.

In Monday’s edition of Der Spiegel, Ali Akbar Salehi reiterates that Iran has a right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and insists there is no proof it is conducting nuclear research for military ends.

However he said: “If our right to enrichment is recognized, we are ready for a trade-off. We would, on a voluntary basis, limit the amount of our enrichment.”

But he said in the interview published in German that Iran would need “the guaranteed supply” of appropriate fuels from abroad.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last week that Iran would not back down on its nuclear drive despite the problems caused by Western sanctions, including a dramatic slide in the value of its currency.

Iran has, in the past, made better offers than this. They were rejected because the US, at the behest of its “wag the dog” ally, won’t accept anything except the total dismantling of the Iranian nuclear program.

What would you do if you were wearing their shoes? Suppose somebody was holding your head under water attempting to drown you. Suppose you had the option of overturning their boat and evening the odds somewhat with both of you in the water.

What would you do? If you’ve glanced at Google News, Israel is wanting the US to increase the sanctions. If that happens you may be able to point to your username and say “I told you so!”

Still, since it’s not too long until the US election, I’d expect Iran to sit on its hands until then – no matter what the provocation. They can always “tip over the boat”, and there’s a decent chance they won’t have to do so. After all, the big brass in the little “wag the dog” state have really PO’ed Obama, and possibly Hillary too. If their handlers don’t happen to want a nasty conflict with Iran after the first week in November, those big fish in the tiny pond are going to be seriously SOL. Of course, if those same handlers DO want a war, Barry O and Hillary will swallow their pride and do as they’re told. THEN I’d expect the sack of crap to hit the fan.

And you can start calling me Zachary the Prophet.

Oh, the poor dears in Iran.
        Give me a break.
For more than 30 years hundreds of thousands of people shouting in state-organized demonstrations.”Death to America” and “Death to Israel” every year while their leaders have made ther intentions perfectly clear.
Iran does not need nuclear reactors for energy production.
They are one of the worlds greatest exporter of oil.
Neither does Iran need highly enriched uranium for chemotherapy or medical use.
One has to be stupid or deceitful to claim otherwise.
        What I would do?
        Simple answer:
Stop enriching uranium. Stop exporting and supporting terrorism. Stop threatening other nations and peoples. Stop dreaming of genocide.
Stop oppressing my one people. Giving my people freedom and democracy while working for peace with all thus ensuring the prosperity of my people.
Of course, they will do neither of these.
        Concerning this “trade-off”:
I guess, they are playing for time, indirectly supporting obama until the elections are over.
After the elections it will be business as usual. That means: no results.
Iran is playing the rest of the world like a fiddle for quite some time.
They are masters in this game.

Since artaxes didn’t even attempt to look at the current situation through Iranian eyes, he’s either incapable of doing so or just wants to change the subject.

**** Iran does not need nuclear reactors for energy production. ****

Maybe that’s true and maybe it’s not. Here’s a raft of links which says they do.

    http://www.iranaffairs.com/iran_affairs/2007/11/irans-nuclear-e.html

And obviously they need a nuclear capability for other reasons. Ugly predators prowl in that region – look what happened to Iraq. Being defenceless isn’t a very good idea.

**** Stop enriching uranium. Stop exporting and supporting terrorism. Stop threatening other nations and peoples. Stop dreaming of genocide. ****

Very noble stuff. Would you apply the first one to Israel? Or the third? Or that last one regarding the subhuman Palestinians? By the way, where DO you stand on stealing other people’s lands? Snuffing out their lives on a whim? Constantly threatening to evict those same subhumans to neighboring countries?

One more question – do you approve of how Israel gave nuclear technology to South Africa? That one got to the point of building and testing real atomic bombs, by the way.

**** Stop oppressing my one people. Giving my people freedom and democracy while working for peace with all thus ensuring the prosperity of my people. ****

I can’t make any sense whatever out of this one.

Your statements show, that your logic is seriously flawed.

“Since artaxes didn’t even attempt to look at the current situation through Iranian eyes, he’s either incapable of doing so or just wants to change the subject.”

You are wrongly assuming, that anyone who looks through iranian eyes, must arrive at the same conclusion at which you arrived.
Therefore, you accuse anyone who comes to a different conclusion than you, that he did not see it through iranian eyes.
It should be obvious, how utterly ridiculous your assumption is.

You expect me, to accept a heavliy biased blog as a proof for your point? Are you kidding?

Besides, energy production was never the reason for Iran’s nuclear program, They were given offers, that would enable them to produce nuclear energy, without having to enrich uranium themselves. They refused those offers.
Their aim is and was always the enrichment itself because that would enable them to produce nuclear weapons as you admit yourself:

“And obviously they need a nuclear capability for other reasons. Ugly predators prowl in that region – look what happened to Iraq. Being defenceless isn’t a very good idea”

Since you conviniently ignored my argument, I repeat it:
For more than 30 years hundreds of thousands of people shouting in state-organized demonstrations.”Death to America” and “Death to Israel” every year while their leaders have made ther intentions perfectly clear.

So they are saying for more than 30 years now, that they want to destroy us. Also they threaten, to wipe out Israel (which would be genocide).
These statements are a declaration of war.
How stupid is it, to declare war and then whine about beeing threatened.
There are many countries that don’t have nukes and that don’t feel threatened.
Nobody feels threatened by british nukes, french nukes or israeli nukes.
You can whine all you want, but if someone takes Iran’s nuclear programme out, they have only themselves to blame.

This is your next logical flaw:

“Very noble stuff.

That one got to the point of building and testing real atomic bombs, by the way.”

Even if the assumptions implied in your questions were true, they are not relevant to the problem.

      You said:

**** Stop oppressing my one people. Giving my people freedom and democracy while working for peace with all thus ensuring the prosperity of my people. ****

I can’t make any sense whatever out of this one.

Ok, I hope, I can make my point clear.
You asked: “What would you do if you were wearing their shoes?”
If I were the leader of Iran, I would stop oppressing my own people and give my people freedom and democracy while working for peace with all thus ensuring the prosperity of my people.

I hope, this makes it clear.

      • Zachary Smith's avatar Zachary Smith Says:

**** Even if the assumptions implied in your questions were true, they are not relevant to the problem. ****

Not relevant! Iran has watched Iraq get crushed, and turned from a prosperous state into a helpless and dependent one. The Iranians have seen Libya invaded with essentially the same result. It is now watching Syria in the process of being destroyed. On this blog is some current speculation of special plans the Israeli Army is planning for Round 2 in Lebanon – they got their butt kicked in Round 1. That’s the latest stuff. Israel had attempted an earlier land grab in Lebanon, and many thousands there died before the occupation failed. I’m also seeing plans for Operation Cast Lead 2 – another attack by tanks and aircraft against Gaza.

But one glowing success has been the West Bank. To use the term beloved by the late German Dictator, the Jewish Nation has sought and found Lebensraum – at the expense of the former inhabitants of that place. Those people are now the wretched of the earth, precisely the fate planned by that same German Dictator for the Russians. They were “Untermensch” – just like the Palestinians under the illegal Israeli occupation. The fate of the subhuman Slavs was to be immediate extermination for most, and enslavement until such time as they were no longer needed by the German Supermen. From all accounts I can locate, a Second Nakba is the absolute best the Palestinians can hope for.

Putting on my Iranian Hat, I don’t like the prospect of any of that happening to me and mine, and am doing things to help insure my people’s safety.

So why don’t you try to take a stab and answering those questions? They really are relevant to the discussion.
