Saudis are buying nuclear-capable missiles from China

DEBKAfile  Exclusive Report  July 4, 2012, 9:48 AM (GMT+02:00)

debkafile’s military sources report that Saudi Arabia has set its feet on the path to a nuclear weapon capability and is negotiating in Beijng the purchase of Chinese nuclear-capable Dong-Fen 21 ((NATO-codenamed CSS-5) ballistic missile.

China, which has agreed to the transaction in principle, would also build a base of operations near Riyadh for the new Saudi purchases.
As we reported last year, Saudi Arabia has struck a deal with Pakistan for the availability on demand of a nuclear warhead from Islamabad’s arsenal for fitting onto a ballistic missile.
Riyadh owns a direct interest in the two most active Middle East issues: Iran and Syria.
Iran’s nuclear weapons program has been advancing for two decades regardless of countless attempts at restraint by every diplomatic tool under the sun and a rising scale of sanctions – to no avail.
Tehran marches on regardless of impediments. In Istanbul, Tuesday, July 3, the six powers and Iran failed the fourth attempt to reach an accommodation on Iran’s nuclear program.
The Syrian ruler Bashar Assad remains equally undeterred by international condemnation. Saturday, June 30, the US and Russia again failed to agree on a joint plan of action in Syria.
Saudi forces have been poised for action in Syria on the Jordanian and Iraqi borders since US Secretary of State Leon Panetta visited Riyadh in late June.

On July 1, they redoubled their military preparedness when the European Union clamped down an oil embargo on Iran. The Saudis, the US Fifth Fleet and the entire Gulf region are since braced for Iranian reprisals which could come in the form of closure by Tehran of the vital Straits of Hormuz to shipping or strikes against the Gulf emirates’ oil exporting facilities.
Tension shot up again when Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched a three-day missile drill against simulated enemy bases in the region – expanding its threats to include US forces and bases in the region, Israel and Turkey.

Once up a time, on a distant planet, a wonderful civilization was flourished. They were nice people, loving trees and nature and food was plenty. They weren’t great inventors, though. They even didn’t know the word ” war ”.
One day, some ET decided to make a favor to those people and teach them the atom secrets. The same ET guys were surprised, after a certain period of time, that the lovely planet disappeared from their telescopes. Those who must learn the lesson, will learn it.

Take it easy with the shrooms Luis. The development of the atomic bomb was the logical result of many decades of nuclear physics, starting with Pierre and Marie Curie’s invention of radioactivity, in which scientists from all over the world participated and culminated
in 1934 when the idea of chain reaction via neutrons was proposed by Leó Szilárd, who patented the idea of the atomic bomb

  3. Renbe's avatar Renbe Says:

obviously the Curie’s discovered radioactivity, they did not invent it.

  4. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

Like always, you are missing the point. But we have get used to that, don’t we ?
There are societies that simply are not ” ready ” for the atomic secret, yet. Getting suddenly such a ” prize ” one can do lots of mistakes. Those physicians that you were talking about started to work from the ’30 and ’40 and later in America and USSR, in parallel, till the ’50 and ’60, when a nuclear arsenal was already in place, but their conception also evolved. The Bomb arrived in America because some people didn’t want it in the nazis hands. The americans developed it for self defense and in front of a japan aggressor empire, thus saving millions of american lives that surely would die if a direct assault on Japan would ever occurred. Then it was the mutual deterrence between USA and USSR.
Why always the americans were the good guys ? Why did they free Europe from the nazi boots ? Why nobody are afraid of them, but the fanatics and the criminals of our days ? Why the thief is afraid of the policeman ?
The mullahs have a barbaric mentality and an atomic bomb in their hands is the ultimate nightmare of the humanity. They even will destroy themselves with it.

I am missing the point? In your initial post you wrote

“One day, some ET decided to make a favor to those people and teach them the atom secrets.”

How can anyone understand what you mean with that? There were no ET’s involved in the unraveling of the atomic secrets, Juan

    • Luis's avatar Luis Says:

Oh, my God… It was a metaphoric story Renbe, for people like you to understand – using a story – why certain people must not get nuclear technology when they are not ready to really use that.
And the ET ? They are all those who willingly and shameless give forbidden ” secrets ” to all those criminal fanatics that are slaughtering their people as we speak here. Its like giving a baboon a gun in your home and hoping you can finish one of yours
” lets defense those poor iranians one more time ” articles.

Oh, my God… It was a metaphoric story Renbe, for people like you to understand”.

Please use normal language if ever you want to explain something to “people like me” again, because your metaphoric story makes no sense at all. Your comparison between a nuclear armed Iran and a baboon with a gun is also skewed, because Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon and a baboon doesn’t know how to fire a gun, let alone how to aim it. It is clear that you are not a native English speaker Luis, keep it short and simple, in plain English.

    • Luis's avatar Luis Says:

From your answer i understand that you got hurt from the fact that the metaphoric method is not your cup of tea; ok, no problem, try to read more and i’m sure you will make nice progress.
And Iran is the baboon that doesn’t know how to use a gun and accidentally may kill some people; and that, because Iran wants nuclear bombs to throw at its ” sinners” enemies.
Anyway, before throwing yourself to low, personal, kind of critic, try to accommodate yourself with, lets say, metaphoric language, which is absolutely normal between intellectuals.
I hope i will not have to explain to you the meaning of the word ” intellectual ” . However, defending baboons with guns and telling us they want , in fact, bananas, may affect, lets say your…intellectuality.

    Just one simple question.
Do you honestly believe that nuclear bomb in the missile in Saudi hands in any less dangerous that one in Iran’s?

    • Luis's avatar Luis Says:

The Saudis need deterrence facing a nuclear, radical and apocalyptic Iran; from the other hand, some terrorist groups were affiliated in the past with Saudi Arabia.
One thing is crystal clear and I’ll speak that loud : nuclear weapons in the muslims hands is the worse nightmare of the humanity. Those who still don’t get it, let them read some old history books.
Because Iran’s mentality, its antecedent behavior , the apocalyptic leadership, for all those reasons and more, those ayatollahs will never be aloud to get nuclear weapons.
We cannot keep our heads deep in sand for ever.

      • Joseph Wouk's avatar josephwouk Says:

        Luis…

It’s not “muslims” which is a religion, rather radical Islam, which is a political movement based on the religion which represents the threat.

The Saudis originated it, but have curtailed it after the blowback from Al Qeda. Iran is now financing radical Islam violence all around the world.

  9. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

Mea culpa. One must remain politically correct. Blaming all the muslims is not the way.

  10. Renbe's avatar Renbe Says:

Pakistan is a Muslim country, and has quite a nuclear arsenal, including the means to deliver them, even as far as Israel.

Saudi Arabia is on the longer term a much bigger threat (to Israel) than Iran will ever be. Lots of things are wrong in Iran, but in Saudi Arabia everything is much worse: total lack of democracy, total lack of human rights, oppression of women, and it is led by a senile inbred clan of power hungry zealots supported by some 7000 “princes”.

All the focus is on Iran, and Saudi Arabia thrives quietly in the shadow. Saudi Arabia is building mosques all over the world to promote their perverted strain of Islam.

Jews nor Israeli’s are allowed to enter SA, non Muslims are not allowed in Mecca and Medina.

I hate to say it but, islam is the perversion.

A religion is nothing but a cult that has endured and thrived. Islam just happens to have been spread by the the sword where its ‘word’ alone did not suffice.

I invite you to read http://www.jihadwatch.com and http://www.thereligionofpeace.com

Islam and the civilized western world will never be able to coexist.

  12. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

Saudi Arabia is not a part of the radical islam; Iran is a part of it and even promotes it while using radical ”diplomatic” language like ”wiping zionists”, ” Israel is a cancer in the region ”…
The truth is the shia mullahs brought all kind of troubles upon their heads and upon their people. They weren’t smart enough : they started to bark b e f o r e they got those bombs. Like Hitler: first he started the war and only after he looked after a ” wonder weapon ” – a wunderwaffe. And, like then, the same today : Iran will be affected on a grand scale by the coming events and its landscape will change forever. Even the 12th Mahdi won’t recognize Iran upon its coming.

    • CTEBA's avatar CTEBA Says:

Not today, they were yesterday, what they will be tomorrow who knows.
Thinking that they will use it to strike Iran only is naive.
Look want happened with weapons in Libya.

    • Renbe's avatar Renbe Says:

You have a weird penchant for Godwins, as you mention Hitler all too often, even though Nazi-Germany 1933-1945 and Iran 1979-2012 have absolutely nothing in common.

Germany, by the way, is one of the most prosperous and advanced countries in the world, and nowadays a favorite destination for emigrating Israelis.

Iran has no intention whatsoever to attack Israel, it doesn’t need ‘lebensraum’ and it knows all too well that any attack on Israel will mean the end of Iran as we know it.

I wrote “on the longer term”, which means 20-30-40 years from now. Iran is the barking dog that doesn’t bite, Saudi Arabia is the seemingly dormant dog that suddenly bites your head off. Who organized 9/11? Where did most of the hijackers come from?

The US/The West has been fomenting problems in and for Iran ever since the US/UK overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran in 1953, to protect their oil companies who were looting Iran’s oil. I can fully understand Iran’s distrust towards the US/The West.

In spite of decades of US sanctions, Iran seems to be doing fine, its young population is well educated. Your hatred of Iran blinds you, and it seems that you can not wait to see “its landscape change forever”, no matter the consequences for the ME and the world.

  13. Louisiana Steve's avatar Louisiana Steve Says:

The fact remains, my friends, that Obama and other world powers have allowed the Iranian threat to advance to such a degree that the nightmare of nuclear poliferation is becoming a reality. The line in the sand, so to speak, must be drawn now if we are to have any lasting peace in this world.

While so many nations consider nuclear weapons a ‘right’, can all be trusted to safeguard their arsenals? I say absolutely not. Can all be trusted to only use them as a last resort for self-defense? No! Are all governments worth defending in this manner? No! So how do we decide who has the ‘right’ to nuclears arms? No one can. That’s why the ‘line’ must be drawn.

Nations who already have nukes have proven they can be dealt with in a peaceful manner. However, the line in the sand has already been crossed by Pakistan. Now we have to live with that uncertainty. We cannot afford anymore.

Remember, all it takes is one detonation in the atmoshere to shower the entire globe with nuclear material for years. Up to now, there have been over 2000 tests throughout the world. What are the long terms effects of exposure to all this nuclear material? More cancer? Shortened life spans in spite of better medical care today? Who knows for sure? I, for one, don’t want to find out.
