Your opinion ?

I’m tired of reading the opinions of know-it-all pundits…

The truth is NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING !

It’s all just opinion; some educated some ignorant.

I know that the readers of this site are as educated as anyone can be who is not privy to classified information.  As such, I am curious to know what conclusions you all may have come to.

I’ll leave the poll up as the headline story on the site for the week it will be active.  Thank you all in advance for your participation.

The comments on this post so far are interesting enough for me to add them to the post itself.  I encourage all to voice their thoughts.  – JW

    • Renbe Says:

April 30, 2012 at 10:05 PM eIf you believe in fairy tales and propaganda, sure. But recently even an Israeli minister finally admitted that Iran (Ahmadinedjad) never actually said “Iran” would wipe Israel off the map. Nazi Germany wanted to expand its territory, Iran doesn’t, so there is no comparison with Iran. In any case, there is not going to be an attack on Iran, Not by the US, and surely not by Israel, sorry. Iran will make some minor concessions and the US will acknowledge Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear research, including enrichment.

  6. Norm Says:

April 30, 2012 at 5:52 PM eI think that President Obama, desperately seeking to avoid a war with Iran prior to the election in November has made a secret under the table understanding with Iran. That Iran could quietly continue its nuclear work up to actually putting together a bomb; that Iran would put out nice peaceful press releases; and the United States will not attack. If Obama is reelected, then Iran will show off its weapons and Obama’s policy will be that Israel must live with a nuclearized Iran….under a policy of mutually assured destruction.

    • Renbe Says:

April 30, 2012 at 10:11 PM eYou are right up and until Iran producing a nuclear device. Firstly it is virtually impossible to produce one secretly, and secondly, if there is no threat (from Israel/US) there is no reason to build one. The whole world, minus Israel, (with the exception of some former heads of Mossad and Generals) is at the moment in agreement that any attack on Iran will not solve anything, and would in fact, only make matters worse. So, please rest assured, there is not going to be any attack, and Iran will not build a nuclear device.

    • Norm's avatar Norm Says:

Renbe, at this very moment Iran is building the capacity to quickly put together a nuclear weapon and the delivery systems. One of there most important reasons to test missiles is to develop the re-entry nosecones that would cover nuclear weapons. Your presumptions are amazing. For one, I think there are a bunch of Sunni Arab countries that would love to have the Iranian nuclear capacities destroyed…so Israel is not alone. Lastly, Iranian officials have stated so many times their wish to eradicate what they call the “Zionist Entity” or promise that the “Zionist Entity” will soon “disappear”, that arguing the point is ridiculous.

Renbe, Iran is a l r e a d y under attack, in case you didn’t noticed that. I hope you won’t be sad if the follow up operations of IDF will be beyond your understanding.

  8. AshkenIQ's avatar AshkenIQ Says:

I think Israel and its allies will make the mistake of not sending Iran back to the Middle-Ages, by not daring to use a nuclear bomb as an EMP.
Too bad, because it would have sent a frightening message to any country trying to secretly build a nuclear bomb.
India should do that to Pakistan, by the way.
Military technology is becoming more powerful each year…and more accessible. But men are not becoming saner as fast as technology progresses. We are living the most dangerous times ever. We should not hesitate sending countries back to pre-industrial times, especially since it would help lower greenhouse gases emissions.

  9. Luis's avatar Luis Says:

There are serious dificulties involved with the EMP solution, which – except with the project Starfish – was never tried in a war. Triggering an EMP above Iran will be considered as a nuclear attack by China and Russia and Israel doesnt want to be the first state which attacked with nuclear weapons another state, since 6 on august, 1945. But Israel has many other options to blind the iranians and to launch a devastating attack, including shutting off their electricity network, if that will be needed. In fact, the first wave of the action is hapening as we talk here : Iran is under cyber-attack and this is not news.

Its obvious that a strike on Iran will happen if this round of negotiations late May fail. And than US and Israel will both strike Iran with some help from Gulf countries and some europeans.

Russia cant do nothing to stop it, they played their card in Syria

  11. Ben's avatar Ben Says:

I do not know if Israel, or Israel and the US, will attack Iran to stop it developing nuclear weapons. It is rather difficult to assess the thinking of leaders, although I do tend to believe that Netanyahu is sincere.

That said, the argument that attacking Iran would not solve anything is jejeune at best. It is also a position that requires one to have absolute confidence in an ability to prophesize. Analogies from the 1930s are not always valid, but let’s just ask ourselves if it would have been better to take on Germany in 1936, after it denounced the disarmament clauses of the 1918 peace settlement, or wait until it attacked |Poland in 1939? There were many people — high-minded & thoughtful — who argued that the use of military force against Berlin would be counter-productive, and that the outcome would be worse for all. History has, I think, shown that perspective to have been tragically wrong. Sometimes, it is necessary to use armed force and go to war because the certain consequences of inaction are decidely worse than the possibilities that arise from doing something. Had the Western Powers mustered the courage to confront the Nazi regime in 1936, we would likely have been spared another world war three years later.

Interestingly, I think it is far easier to defend the position of those in the 1930s who wanted to avoid war, if only because the true horrors of the Nazi regime were not yet as eveident, than it is those who decry the use of force against Iran. Tehran is already waging a war against Western interests, it actively supports terrorist groups, its rhetoric is undeniably hostile and aggressive, its regime is heavily influenced by millenarianism (regardless of what the Israeli Chief of Staff thinks), and it is engaging vast resources in its nuclear weapons programme.

All this is to say that “in my guts” I think a war with Iran is inevitable. The only question is whether it is waged according to the timetable of the good guys (that is us!) or the Iranians.
