The Syrian government continues to crack-down on pro-reform protesters, with Monday’s death toll reaching between 11 and 25 people during a demonstration in Daraa, according to varying reports.

Thousands of soldiers backed by tanks poured Monday into the city where the five-week-old uprising began, opening fire indiscriminately on civilians before dawn and killing at least 11 people, witnesses said.

The offensive was planned in detail with electricity, water and mobile phone services cut off and knife-wielding security agents conducting house-to-house sweeps.

Witnesses said busloads of troops poured in before dawn and snipers took up positions on the roofs of houses and high buildings while other security agents searched houses for suspected protesters.

“We need international intervention. We need countries to help us,” a witness in Daraa told the Associated Press on the phone, adding that he saw five corpses after security forces opened fire on a car.

“Let Obama come and take Syria. Let Israel come and take Syria. Let the Jews come – anything is better than Bashar Assad,” he said, playing on Syria’s hatred for Israel to highlight how much town residents despise their leader.

Meanwhile, the White House stepped up its condemnation of President Bashar Assad’s regime, but stopped well short of demanding the ouster of a leader some US Democrats had considered a potential reformer and peace broker.

The US State Department on Monday told American citizens to leave Syria as soon as they can and ordered some personnel at the US Embassy in Damascus to depart the country.

It is not the first time that Israel bombs Syria…

Why Did Israeli Planes Enter Syria?
September 10, 2007 – A mysterious incident involving Israeli jets over northern Syria last week has revived fears of war between Israel and Syria, just as months of tension between the bitter foes had appeared to be subsiding. The Israeli government is maintaining a rigid — and uncharacteristic —silence over the affair, which has drawn threats of retaliation from Damascus and a vow to take the matter to the U.N. Security Council. Speculation is rife, but facts elusive, over why Israeli warplanes were over above the arid plains of northern Syria early Thursday. Syria’s official news agency last week quoted a Syrian military official saying that Israeli jets had entered Syrian airspace from the Mediterranean, and broke the sound barrier before coming under fire from air defenses. The Israelis, according to this account, had “dropped munitions” over deserted areas before departing. The report did not specify whether the Israelis had bombed any targets. The following day, fuel tanks were discovered inside Turkey near the Syrian border. Other jettisoned tanks were reportedly found inside Syria.
“They dropped bombs over Syria and they dropped fuel tanks on Syrian soil,” Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said in Ankara Monday, while briefing Turkish officials on the incident. Turkey, which has strong military and diplomatic ties to Israel, described the overflights as “unacceptable,” and has demanded an explanation from the Israeli government.

U.S. OFFICIAL WARNS SYRIA ISRAEL WILL BOMB

January 18, 2010 – I just love unsourced stories like this in the Israeli press: they can mean everything or nothing or something in between. Usually they’re garbage as likely in this case. But what’s interesting is the sheer effrontery of whoever the U.S. official is:
An American source says that Syria allowed Hezbollah operatives to train within its territory in the use of advanced SA2 anti-aircraft missile batteries, the Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported Sunday. In an interview, the senior U.S. official warned that if Syria supplies Hezbollah with this type of missile, Israel will bomb Damascus and a war will likely ensue.
According to the official, Israel has warned Syria not to allow the transfer of the SA2 missiles into the hands of Hezbollah, and views the transfer of such missiles as the crossing of a red line. He added that he did not believe that a war would break out soon, unless one of the sides violated the undeclared agreement not to cross the red lines defined by both sides.
The phrase “senior U.S. official” has Dennis Ross written all over it. But I suppose there are other pro-Israel lackeys in the White House it could be. Imagine a U.S. official having the temerity of doing Israel’s bidding in its battles with its neighbors. Which government does he think he serves? Washington or Tel Aviv?
The idea that a defensive weapon like anti-aircraft batteries would be viewed by Israel as grounds for war against Syria is typical of the Israeli strategic mindset. In their view, anything that threatens their military dominance, even military weapons designed to defend a neighbor’s sovereign territory, is grounds for attack. All I can say is that the Middle East is changing and the Iron Fist no longer works in terms of Israeli deterrence. Israel can no longer bomb its way to victory. I suppose it may take another wasted Lebanon war or two before this lesson sinks in. But eventually it will. At least I hope so. If it doesn’t, then Israel is doomed.
