Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, calling it “bold” and “courageous.”
“In over 30 years in my experience with the UN, I never heard a bolder or more courageous speech,” Netanyahu tweeted. “President Trump spoke the truth about the great dangers facing our world and issued a powerful call to confront them in order to ensure the future of humanity.”
During his address, Trump castigated the Iran nuclear deal brokered by the former Obama administration as “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into”
“We cannot abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program,” Trump said. “Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it, believe me.”
Netanyahu and much of the Israeli public strongly opposed the nuclear deal when it was being negotiated and after it was passed. He criticized the direction in which negotiations were headed in an address before the U.S. Congress in 2015, further pushing him and then-President Barack Obama apart.
Trump also rebuked the Iranian government for committing human rights abuses against its own people and for supporting terrorist groups.
“The longest suffering victims of Iran’s leaders are, in fact, its own people,” Trump said. “Rather than use its resources to improve Iranian lives, its oil profits go to fund Hezbollah and other terrorists that kill innocent Muslims and attack their peaceful Arab and Israeli neighbors.”
