The Brussels metro has tweeted to say the entire system is shut down following reports of a blast at Maelbeek station, close to the city’s EU institutions.
Unconfirmed reports are emerging of an explosion at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels, close to the city’s EU institutions.
Images posted to social media appear to show smoke emerging from the front of the station.
Belgian PM Charles Michel tweets: “The federal government is following the situation closely. Absolute priority goes to the victims and to the aid effort at the airport”
Belgium has raised its terror threat to the highest level, AFP reports.
That takes the level for the entire country up from level three to four, the maximum.
The country was already on high alert after a shootout in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek last week in which Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam was captured.
Sky News journalist Alex Rossi was at the airport when the blasts occurred. He said he heard two “very, very loud explosions”.
“I could feel the building move. There was also dust and smoke as well… I went towards where the explosion came from and there were people coming out looking very dazed and shocked.
“The thinking here is that it is some kind of terrorist attack – that hasn’t been verified by any of the authorities here at the airport.”
Belgian news agency Belga is reporting that shots were fired and Arabic was shouted before the two explosions at Brussels airport.
Multiple reports say the explosions happened at the American Airline check in desk.
Twitter user Giorgi Tabagari has been posting images of the scenes at Brussels airport.
Brussels airport has been closed until further notice, says Eurocontrol, a European organisation for the safety of air navigation, following Brussels airport explosions.
Belgian media reports say one person has died in the explosion and several have been injured.
Other, unconfirmed media reports, citing firefighters at the scene, say at least 11 people have been killed in the blasts and 25 injured.
