Organisers at RAF Lakenheath – home to the USAF 48th Fighter Wing – and nearby RAF Mildenhall were forced to pull out of the July 4 celebrations due to “the most current local threat assessments”.

Tomorrow’s event, marking US Independence Day, would have attracted more than 25,000 visitors to the nearby village of Feltwell in Suffolk, which is also attended by thousands of service members and their families every year.

They were expecting to enjoy displays by the Red Arrows, the RAF Falcons’ parachute team, and a show of vintage aircraft flying in the skies as well as live bands and fireworks.

However, due to the fears of the threat posed by Islamic State (ISIS) sympathisers – following last week’s Tunisa terror attack and the upcoming anniversary of the London 7/7 attacks – security chiefs cancelled the planned the two-day festival last night.

Colonel David Eaglin, 48th Fighter Wing vice commander said: “While we were certainly looking forward to this year’s celebration and hosting the US and UK communities, we have to put public safety first and foremost.
