The Danish psychologist Nicolai Sennels has – on the basis of its extensive experience with dealing with Muslim youth – four significant patterns identified to understand the behavior of Muslims and how they deal with Western influences:

Anger

Westerners have been brought up to see anger as a sign of weakness, impotence and lack of self-control.
However, anger in the Islamic culture is seen as a sign of strength. Aggression is a way for Muslims to get respect.
When we see pictures of bearded men who savagely jump back and forth and shooting in the air, we must realize that these role models are of acceptable behavior.

Self Confidence

Western culture shows that self confidence can deal with criticism and it can react rationally.We are raised with the idea that people who quickly get angry by criticism are probably insecure and immature.
In the Islamic culture is the opposite. It is honorable to be aggressive to respond, to fight, to scare critics so that they withdraw and to fight, even if this can lead to imprisonment or even death.
They see non-aggressive responses to threats as a sign of a vulnerability that should be used.
They have not learned to interpret a quiet response as an invitation to enter into a dialogue, diplomacy, debate, compromise or peaceful co-existence. Just the opposite.

Sense of control

In Western culture, we are brought up to an inner sense of control. This means that we own our own inner emotions, reactions, decisions and viewpoints as the most important decision-making factor in our lives. There may be circumstances that affected our situation, but in the end, it’s our own judgement of a situation and the way how we handle it. This leads to a large private responsibility and motivates people to their own problems.

Muslims are raised with a remote sense of control. It appears from the continued use of the term inshallah (“If Allah wants,”) when talking about the future. Many aspects of life are determined by ancient traditions, the clan culture and the leaders of the clan. That leaves little room for individual freedom.
Individual initiative is sometimes even severely punished. If things go wrong that leads to , it’s always the fault of others, or of the situation.

Identity

Finally, identity plays an important role. Westerners are taught to open and tolerant towards other cultures and religions and to learn. Thereby we are less critical on negative aspects.

However, Muslims are taught that they are superior, and that all others are so bad that Allah will send them to hell after they die.

Wrong move by Obama

In June 2009, when just elected president, Obama went to Egypt where he ruled that a wrong expectation created in the Arab world: “I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of islam wherever they may arise.”

Obama suggested it wrongly for the Islamic world that he had the media in America under control – such as the dictators in the Arab-Islamic countries.

It typifies the Western tendency to be overly forgiving his response to Islamic slachtofferdenken. It is the psychological crowbar to evoke more Muslim violence.

Conclusion

One can not reconcile Islamists with a secular system of laws. They can see the Western presence in the Persian Gulf or not tolerate Israel’s right to exist.
They can see the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, or not accept freedom for women. In short, their requirements are incompatible with the modern world.

What we should ask ourselves is why we actually condone all kinds of extremism in the world? Why should we approve those who just seeks to dismiss any criticism of radical islam as blasphemy?
