Sanctions on Russia not constructive: Iranian ambassador, Tehran Times, March 18, 2014

Iran does not support outsiders’ intervention in regional disputes and believes that regional players should take measures to help resolve regional issues, he said. 

TEHRAN – Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei has said that the imposition of sanctions by the United States and the European Union on Russia over its involvement in the Ukraine crisis is not constructive.

“The Islamic Republic does not see the imposition of sanctions (on Russia) as a proper and constructive solution, and it is also opposed to outsiders’ intervention in regional disputes,” Ambassador Sanaei told reporters on Monday.

He also said that Tehran is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine, adding that Iranian officials believe that international sanctions on countries are not a constructive solution to issues.

The United States and the European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on a number of Russian and Ukrainian officials in retaliation over the Crimea referendum.

According to the Guardian, European foreign ministers imposed EU-wide sanctions on against 21 Russian and Ukrainian officials linked to unrest in Crimea. Washington followed up later with a list of its own, targeting seven top Russian government officials and politicians and four Crimea-based separatist leaders accused of undermining the “democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine.”

Speaking to journalists at the White House, U.S. President Barack Obama said the new sanctions increase the costs on the Russian government for its actions

“If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions,” Obama said.

He added, “We will continue to make clear to Russia that further provocations will achieve nothing except to further isolate Russia and diminish its place in the world.” The White House said the sanctions were “by far and away the most comprehensive sanctions since the end of the cold war.”
