Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reportedly suggested giving Israel “a tacit green light” to attack Iran, according to a former Obama administration official, as quoted in Time Magazine.
While not endorsing an attack, Clinton’s suggestion would imply not dissuading Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from authorizing an attack, or actively advocating further diplomacy. According to the former official, Clinton only raised the idea “as one option to consider.”
In his new memoir “Duty,” former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates reveals that at a January 2010 Oval Office meeting, he told U.S. President Barack Obama “he needed to consider the ramifications of a no-warning Israeli attack,” including the possibility of U.S. assistance in the attack.
Meanwhile, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that the oil-goods swap between Russia and Iran was still on the table, despite U.S. opposition.
