Twenty-two Al-Jazeera staff members working out of the satellite news channel’s Egypt offices resigned on Monday over allegedly being told to slant their coverage of the recent riots sweeping through the country to favor the Muslim Brotherhood. The staffers said the station’s reporting did not sync with realities on the ground.
According to Gulf News, anchor Karem Mahmoud announced that the staff had resigned in protest of the “biased coverage” of the events in Egypt by the Qatari-owned news network.
Mahmoud told Gulf News that the resignations were submitted because “the management in Doha provokes sedition among the Egyptian people and has an agenda against Egypt and other Arab countries.”
He added that the news channel’s management had instructed staff members to favor the Muslim Brotherhood in their coverage of events in Egypt.
“There are instructions to us to telecast only certain news,” said Mahmoud.
Haggag Salama, an Al-Jazeera correspondent in Luxor, resigned on Sunday accusing the company of “airing lies and misleading viewers.”
Meanwhile, according to Gulf News, four Egyptian members of the editorial staff at Al-Jazeera’s Doha headquarters resigned in protest of what they called a “biased editorial policy” pertaining to events in Egypt.
