Iran will unveil in the coming days a new homemade cruise missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1240 miles), Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Mehdi Farahi announced on Sunday.
According to Iranian media outlets, the missile’s long distance capability puts all of Israel within its range, with Farahi calling it “the Islamic Republic of Iran’s upper hand.”
Farahi stated that the missile could be fired from submarines, ground installations and aircraft.
The Iranian deputy minister stated that Iran has already developed five different types of cruise missiles and is weighing whether to develop nine additional types of cruise missiles.
The U.S. missile defense system will be unable to thwart the Iranian missiles according to Farahi. “If a confrontation was to break out, they [the U.S.] would see how baseless their assertions are [about their missile defense system].”
The Iranian deputy minister also commented on Israel’s short-range rocket interception system, Iron Dome. Farahi doubted its effectiveness, questioning how so many rockets have hit Israel, despite the system’s existence.
