The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Iran is accelerating its efforts towards developing a nuclear bomb. According to the report, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have established a special task force, which includes approximately 60 nuclear scientists, named the “New Defense Research Organization.” The newspaper received the information from Iranian opposition organizations, which were responsible for exposing the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities in the past.

According to the report, the task force is comprised of seven units, each of them responsible for development of a field related to the assembly of the lethal weapon, such as turning enriched uranium into fissile material. The newspaper is also claiming that the task force is responsible for preparing the nuclear facility in Pordu.

Centrifuges have already been installed at the facility itself, but it has yet to become operational. The facility is located underground and is heavily protected against potential aerial strikes.

The Daily Telegraph report comes against the backdrop of the visit of US Foreign Secretary Hillary Clinton to Israel this week and the visit of US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to Israel. It was reported yesterday that the US will position a radar in a secret site in Qatar, in order to strengthen early-warning systems in the Persian Gulf region, in case of a potential conflict with Iran.

There have been multiple reports over the past few weeks that the US is doubling its naval force in the Persian Gulf, especially in the area of the Strait of Hormuz, in order to prevent Iran from closing the strait as a bargaining chip for alleviating the sanctions imposed against it.
